1. saugatak, open up my IE.IN_ and search for "OS2 Subsystem" uncomment these values, save the file. as strongbad says, "DELETED!!" note: i'll add the POSIX stuff. in fact, if you guys give me registry info (INF format please, but if it has to be REG format, that's okay) then i will add it to this file.
2. saugatak - pretty good work there. i wrote elsewhere about os/2 subsystem... maybe i should remove its files and add an INF to install it if people want it. there are folks who use old programming tools that make use of it. Oleg_II, yeah, COMPDATA is junk. about languages generally - my fileset has more global fans than users in my own country, so i am hesitant to comment them out. to illustrate -- let's see if i can get this story right ... a computer security consultant in poland flew to england. he met with a ceo of a company he was going to do some consulting work for there, and over dinner, he was mentioning removing internet explorer using a fileset downloaded from the internet. the information technology guy was there at dinner as well, and this guy just laughed. the consultant asked "what?" thinking the techie was thinking it couldn't be done. the techie walked over to a nearby laptop and brought up my website... this company had already started using my fileset.
3. Oleg_II, don't worry, your changes will be incorporated into the next version (removing help, that is).i have thought about deleting help files from source and i will probably be addressing that as well. (or, i might recommend searching for *.ch_ and deleting the results from i386 saugatak - well, the thing is, my fileset is intended to be as universal as possible. for example, there are folks who use the OS/2 subsystem, so i left it in. it's easy to ditch, though. i dont have time this month but perhaps it's a good idea to consider removing calc, paint, notepad, os2 subsys, etc. and put in a seperate INF to install them if someone wants them? i'd welcome input on that i guess. i'm not in love with the idea because i don't really want to keep up two filesets. not sure. of course, there is always nlite, but IMHO it does not clear a system of IE quite like my files do (nlite's not really meant to though; nuhi and i have discussed this in emails and are both comfortable with what our seperate projects do).
4. saugatak, did you comment out from SYSOC the following line: AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7 or did you in any way alter accessor.inf? have a look inside this INF; you can adjust what gets installed. i used my FDV files (of course) and paint and calc installed fine for me. about AU... that's left on purpose. right now its a blank INF but in the future i might put automatic update in it (this is not the same as windows update). that's a big maybe. it has to get tested first and i haven't done that yet. you will find my experimental new version of au.inf viewable here.
5. just FYI, i changed the thread title to make it clearer. i'll defer to tommyp on the 'why' though because i am not sure. mine actually works fine. are you using the latest (october) version of HFSLIP?
6. help files the question is, should i remove help files, like i used to in my SP4 fileset? my thought is this: if you are ripping IE out, then you probably know how to use windows and don't need the built in help files. does nlite even offer this option? i have not used it since two versions ago. i think we should go ahead on this. Oleg_II you have a PM from me. i will put the help files into an INF so that users have a choice of installing them later if they want them. services this is going to be kind of a rant, so feel free to ignore. this is NOT aimed at anyone here, it's mostly me taking a poke at people in other forums who would throw out their printers so that they don't have to run the Print Spooler... but they run garbage like Internet Explorer. here is the bottom line: what sucks up memory? DLLs!! i recommend The Elder Geek -- this site actually lists people's experience with various settings. i read in other forums about these so-called tweakers that, for example, shut off Fax Services and think they're allright -- guess what? if the Fax DLLs are on your hard drive, the shell will make calls to them... those DLLs are loaded in memory. "which services can i shut off on my machine that is bogged down with gigs of useless dlls anyway" has become a whole industry on its own with probably hundreds of web pages dedicated to the subject. and as for removing dlls? there are only three guys out there listed (paragraph four). not much is running anyway if you use my fileset. (remember, manual without a "started" and disabled both mean the service isn't running). i use: Computer Browser COM+ DHCP Client Distributed Link Tracking DNS Event Log IPSec Logical Disk Manager Network Connections Plug and Play Print Spooler Protected Storage RPC Removable Storage Remote Access Conn. Manager RunAs Security Accounts Server System Event Notification Telephony TCP/IP Helper Workstation WMI Messenger, Alerter, BITS, Remote Registry, Alerter, Indexing Service, Clipbook, NetDDE, RPC, QoS, Wireless, Smartcard, etc etc etc etc etc etc all of those are off (or not even there). you can even comment out COM and WMI in the SYSOC file before install and skip these, because Windows will run without COM and WMI. (there is software that needs them, but if you're a gamer or you don't use much software you go run without them. even the administrative stuff in windows will run fine without them. services? meh, who cares, with my fileset the major resource hogs are all already off. i have a network, which right off the bat means i need a bunch of these like Computer Browser and Server and Workstation. RunAs - get rid of it? what am i going to do, logoff and back on as admin every time i want to install software?! i read with some interest some suggested services to kill like Distributed Link Tracking Client. on a home machine, yeah, it would seem useless. i'm going to need to reboot a few times to see if it actually does save 4mb of memory. i can't see sparing any others, maybe Security Manager, but I have DHCP running, and there is a dependency there. TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service? mmkay try filesharing without it. i guess if you have a standalone machine running only games, dumping all of your services could make sense. is that really the scenario for all these guys whose posts i read? they put a few shiny 512Mb sticks of Corsair in their Pentium 4 overclocked PC, but they act scared to actually put any of it to use. sure, they get a more responsive system, which is good for all of that number crunching they do simulating nuclear reactions and studying protein aggregation for curing diseases, but then they get a glitchy system that can't browse a network... and then they're on the 'net asking people why. [/services rant off now]

What belongs where?

hey saugatak, good question. the dot sif file can be in either one place or the other. don't put it in both (it won't hurt anything if you do, though). you can leave WINNT.SIF in either place. FDVFILES gets copied over to I386 before FIX. if you want to use your own, just delete mine. mine is really from way back in the day when people would literally just download my files and plop them right into I386 and not read anything... giving them a WINNT.SIF was an easy way to get people to look into the files (hmmm, he put in a WINNT.SIF, i wonder what settings he used? maybe i'll just have a look in all of his files.)

Windows Components

actually, DUN does install you have to run a search and find rasphone.exe and make a shortcut to it on your desktop, but it's there. but i know what you mean. you'd have to uncomment all lines in SYSOC and then use the site that bilou mentioned in his post above. keep in mind, too, that we're only talking about adding back: - the built-in Fax viewer, nor compatable with any other third party software anyway - iis, ims, iisdbg: all internet information services junk - IndexSrv_System - i personally guarantee you will never want to use this - FrontPage Extensions - the laughable windows built-in kodak "imagevue" etc. (pinball, wordpad).
9. saugatak - thanks for giving the info. i left welcome in because it's a sneaky way to get any binary you want to run, right off the bat! just make your EXE file with IEXPRESS, compress it, and replace the welcome.exe file that's already there. the thing is, i've never bothered with it, but for folks who want an easy automatic install, it's all arranged for you (you could have an EXE that installs a bunch of INF files or somesuch). glad you got nero "fixed" TAiN - this is completely possible. many of these don't get installed anyway. i comment files out because some folks who use my files insist on running without WINNT.SIF, the unattended file, in order to install special drivers at setup by hitting F6.
10. worth having a look. HFSLIP Forum What is HFSLIP? HFSLIP will actually slipstream, not just integrate, your files.

Windows Components

hey gents, TazzDevil, after removing IE the add/remove components applet disappears (it is IE dependant). TAiN - to date i have not found any way of doing this. i'll check my notes but i don't think i ever dealt with this... what i did was make adjustments to SYSOC (this is the file that does Add/Remove Windows Components). you can run the INFs in SYSOC individually using rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 install.inf IIRC... i'll have to find my notes on this, sorry i don't have a better answer... i just can't remember right now... i am wondering though which optional components you're looking at installing, because remember, my version of SYSOC is darn near empty, with everything commented out...
12. DW, you've seen the HFSLIP thread before I'm pretty sure... This is the IE-free method. This is a really short summary that applies to SP4. Here is what you will regain in memory and hard drive space.
13. Daemonforce, doing this manually is entirely possible, but you're going to end up creating your own INFs in I386 anyway to install the extra DX9c files, the AddReg entires from all of the hotfixes, etc. There is of course the Unofficial SP5, but all of this is for slipstreaming. If you want to integrate, then manual editing is the only route for you. IMO only, integration -- tacking the files on to install after Windows 2000 installs -- seems like a major headache compared to slipstreaming (replacing the files in the source). The Unattended Forum might yield better results for you.
14. Hey Gurgelmeyer, long time no see. A bunch of us are comin' over with chicken soup, beer, and hookers. I'm wondering, since you dig up info on nonpublic fixes, does Microsoft even _know_ about the HALT bug? As in, do they even pay attention to what's going on outside their walls, that you have seen? Wondering if there is any hope on this.

What belongs where?

Well, the documentation has been updated. BTW, random note, if you use HFSLIP, please do NOT remove sound drivers. If you remove sound drivers, WM codecs don't work. I use Windows 2000, without IE, using IE 5.01 shell files. TommyP uses IE 6 SP1. Our file lists are here: http://www.vorck.com/2ksp5.html#hf There is a sample list of files for an XP configuration. That list is here: http://www.vorck.com/hfslip.html#11
16. Supporting HFSLIP (if you want to -- no offense taken if you don't put this in your sig!) Put this in your signature of your profile to add an "HFSLIP" icon to the bottom of your posts. It's small and unobtrusive. Let's get word out about this new forum for October. In November I'll probably take the graphic down. You'd be surprised how much a simple logo eats up in bandwidth, being reloaded constantly Again, it's strictly for those who want to -- nothing personal if you don't... But if you don't, HFSLIP will just turn off your refridgerator via TCP/IP and let your girlfriend's Hagen-Daazs go all melty...
17. been busy with HFSLIP, and haven't really done anything with slimming down the XP registry... it is huge... anyone wanna export their whole thing and send me the keys that need deleting, I'll still write the INF to delete it all (not that this is terribly difficult anyway)
18. Sometimes I get folks asking for this. Here is a .torrent It's free from MS anyway, but this is updated with patched files current as of this post. I will probably decide that I don't want to sacrifice the bandwidth later, that's why I am seeding this .torrent right now. I'd like it to propagate a little bit, then I'm going to take it down. Ideally, someone can find a home for it and seed it themselves. As for right now, though, grab it even if you don't need it but think you might later. BTW if it doesn't work for you, I don't wanna know about it -- I'm not going to offer support on this. it works for me and Oleg_II, if it doesn't work for you, I'm going to say "Use Thunderbird instead!"
19. or use something that actually slipstreams the fixes you want as well as ie6 sp1, dx9c and type 2 fixes, mp10, and makes unattended installs pretty easy. (has links to find everything you need, too--forget MSFT). HFSLIP Direct IE6 download (this is NOT simply a set of instructions).

outstanding issues

this is mainly just a quick note from your pal fdv to encourage folks who posted in the original thread to re-post any unresolved issues that we didn't get around to or inadvertently skipped. please start a NEW topic with these issues, don't reply to this. thanks
21. Yzöwl, didn't know you gots the xp. you're right , MSI instructions are not in there. sorry about that. i'll clarify this with TP. in 2k, they go into the HF folder, and you use the MSICabExtract.exe file; this is the first time this MSI issue has come up in connection with 2k3/xp and this needs to be answered so i'll document that when TP tells me what's up. as for svcpack.in_, that's right too, i was misremembering, i'll edit my post to prevent confusion. ok i'll admit it's been a long time since i've looked at the code a few folks have PMs from me, check your inboxes.
22. TAiN, those are TommyP's and I believe he had them there just as part of a test build he was making. I have corrected this list to what he told me he actually uses. Yzöwl - see the first post. documentation http://www.vorck.com/2ksp5.html http://www.vorck.com/hfslip.html Kapo - kb892130 is gone from microsoft's site because they replaced it with 898588.
23. that's okay, no offense taken. yes, you need to run hfslip on windows 2k+, at work. no you aint got no choice in this. do the USB key thing, everything can be done from there. ha, lying! i'm such a kidder. you'd need like a 3 gig USB memstick. transport it and run it on your employer's hard drive. then copy SOURCESS back onto the stick. reminder to all, this is where to look to find my and TommyP's configurations for windows 2000. http://www.vorck.com/2ksp5.html#hf @saugatak - pm me your email addy, i have a hard time sometimes connecting MSFN usernames with email addresses. i have a tip that will help you with ISO creation.
24. ratba_tardly, you need to run at least 2k in order to slipstream a SP into an OS. or so i read everywhere i see. i had a method of doing it on nt4 but it's in my notes and i don't recall it off hand. also... um, not sure about how well the modern MAKECAB will run on 98, you gotta have that. AFAIK this has never been tried. BTW, why a server OS? BTW part 2, as for us running windows or linux, we'll leave that whole debate for slashdot as for why we don't run MacOS, well... dunno, actually. i coulda switched in 2002 or so when i was contemplating a platform switch. i started on a mac and used to make fun of PC users with their command line. then one day i saw someone drag a spreadhseet into a word document (this was 1993, on windows 3.1, with word 2.0 using object linking and embedding). the mac had nothing like it, so i switched to windows. i am now going to ramble pointlessly, so get ready. okay then in 1995 i switched (or added, i should say) os/2. i really liked its stability but at the time, warp (borg) had an odd interface. to create a new folder, for example, you had to go to the launch pad and make it there and then move it where you wanted it. i then dual booted windows 95 and redhat linux (caldera, the horrors) and i lived with that until i decided nt4 was best for me in 1997. i loved nt 4. i knew some mac users and that platform still had a looooong way to go. i used nt4 right up until something ridiculous, like 2001 IIRC, when i got win2k.
25. i think we are all agreed -- out of necessity, it's time for a new forum. this is getting insanely hard to follow am emailing xper now... told him the details, he is considering i think (or, he's gone to bed, which i need to do muself) @TAiN - adding / removing, this was hooked to MSHTML, so you need to use a program listed at step 9. UnClean 2 - Because once IE is gone, you won't be able to uninstall programs. MyUninstaller - Pretty much does the same thing as above, but GPL. guglemeyer's unoffical sp5 has directx 7.1 in it right now. that you would get problems with dx9 is very odd. if you don't want dx9, just leave out that step. in other words, remove BDANT.cab and dxnt.cab from HFCABS. winnt.sif - to let everyone know, what is in question here is getting back the windows partitioning and formatting menu for the drive. IIRC, deleting winnt.sif will get this menu back, as well as the "Press F6" message. free cd burning packages - dunno, never supported them. nero does the sector count perfectly... it's like outatouch says, it's really a defacto requirement. i just dont have the time to work out the requirements for MKISOFS.EXE right now. filecopy errors are common with HFSLIP. it does not mean something is wrong, it usually means junk is being discarded. this driver integration guide you're using -- that "= 100" after the filename means it comes from windows xp, sp(1|2), so leave it as a "= 1". those instructions will work for win2k fine, or should, but it's little things like that that tell the user they wrote it with xp in mind. i see "codecreg.reg" in the expert directory, and an inf file. reg and inf files should go elsewhere... guess! lastly it does not matter what drive you use. the instructions just "Have about 3 gigs of working space (a large D: drive in my examples)."
