  1. There is another forum here at MSFN connected to a project that - has a SATA "add your driver" tutorial (but bartorob gives you the gist of what you need) - slipstreams windows hotfixes in a simpler way Out of respect for the fact that this forum is devoted to a competing product I won't name this other project in the text of this post. Use Nero to burn your ISO to a CD. Nero has a time trial if ya don't want to buy. BTW everyone here has access to hot babes. You just have to sign up for the MSFN Platinum Membership.
  2. LAYOUT is indeed protected. Better trick Windows if using Bilou's tip.

    hanging up

hi dirtwarrior, go ahead. there's no restrictions on editing those files.
  4. Even Microsoft says it's probably what's been suggested. dotnet does not need IE, BTW. I use dotnet fine. Are you using an OEM CD? you said "retail" but I want to make sure. Also, be sure to use a Virtual Machine to test in. You can download VM free for 45 days. Also it sounds like you tested with a slipstreamed 2000 with SP4 but this was from what... your SOURCE folder, right? Finally try a version using my files but delete SETUPP.INI from the FDVFILES folder. That's the product specification file.

    fdv: IE engine doubts

A full IE6 would slow your system down. The IE6 of MSHTML.DLL alone would not, however. It's just one DLL. Shouldn't be a huge problem. I can't really see the purpose of doing this, however, if you're only using it for HTML Help.

Just a 'by the way' on this. An interesting footnote to this story. All sorts of sites on the net with this 'trick' of disabling SFC tell you to switch the 8B C6 values in SFC.DLL to 90 90 and then they require a registry setting. This is the 'Collake Hack' as discovered by Jeremy Collake. After Windows installs, however, it would set the registry back and SFC would be back on again. A friend of mine across the world from me discovered that if you change 83 F8 9D 75 07 8B C6 to B8 9D FF FF FF 90 90, it disables SFC completely, and no registry setting is necessary. After this was published, several popular software packages suddenly were able to disable SFC completely, without the registry setting. It was interesting but my friend who helped me immeasurably with these DLLs still didn't want any credit and didn't want to be named (not because he fears authorities but because it's a point of pride with him).

    fdv: IE engine doubts

@Oleg_II - thanks for the INF. I will change mine. In your INF, you have: [HelpFiles] hh.exe hhctrl.ocx itss.dll lib.dll Two questions: what about these files below? I put them in directory 11 (winnt/system32). Is that workable or should they be added to 16422,"help" ? hhctrlui.dll hhsetup.dll itircl.dll also, what is "LIB.DLL" ? I don't have it on my system... Anyway, I'll update my fileset with this info soon.. thanks for the edits and especially the registry entries. Note that I don't use the Help system. Which does, I admit, prevent me from using certain software sometimes. On a related note, I think I've said this before, I substituted the MSHTML.DLL from the WINE project. It didn't work at all, unfortunately. I looked at the ReactOS and there was no direct equivalent to this DLL at all. I hate being stuck without HTML help and not having a good substitute. There are some substitutes here and there but none work seamlessly. Anyway... Windows 2003 seems to make extensive use of it, and right now Oleg_II, TommyP and I are working on removing the crap from 2003. One of the things I am doing first, like I did for 2000, is gutting the registry. I guess I'm really going to have to talk to any big 2003 users to figure out if ripping mshtml stuff out of the registry is really a good idea...

    Fdv's files: Dial-up?

Oleg_II has the solution. This Network Wizard would give way to the Internet Connection Wizard which is removed, but it's only a wizard. No real functionality is lost.

    WFP technical

Trodas, nothing's "fake" in the method you've cited. You've been given accurate advice here. SFC checking is disabled via the 90 90 hack. SFC still needs SFCFILES. After all, with the 90 90, we just disabled file checking, SFC still needs SFCFILES. We're not rewriting the whole DLL, after all!! So, just to be sure, we also give Windows an empty SFCFILES.DLL with no filenames in it. So, SFC doesn't check any files at all, but still needs SFCFILES, which is now empty. So no matter what, file protection is OFF. Also, if I read you right, you are thinking that a rootkit revealer would show you that system file protection is on. No rootkit revealer would do this, WFP is considered a valid Windows component whether on or off. A rootkit revealer is going to reveal non-Windows binaries that specifically report themselves as 'hidden' to the OS. Finally as for stopping a process Windows says you can't, it's an inherent limitation (for the most part). An Administrator might have "administrative" rights, but not system rights. Like TommyP says... use HFSLIP, then run nLite. Then, if you want, replace the SFC and SFCFILES dll's with the ones in my fileset, or use the 'disable SFC' checkbox in nLite, which will execute the 90 90 hack (but will not provide an empty SFCFILES.DLL). Personally, I use SFC. The performance hit is not big when you think about the fact that there is software that will attempt to replace system files on you without asking. If SFC is off, some of your system files could be replaced by older versions shipped with the software.

    WMF vulnerability

WMF patch, official, from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms06-001.mspx (The HTML button in my MSFN posting box isn't working, for whatever reason) PS... "Memaw's Scratch Biscuit" ?? What do his doggie friends think?

    WMF vulnerability

Just a general, last note... Sober will begin to hit on the 5th of January (tomorrow). If you use my fileset, you don't have to worry about SHIMGVW.DLL, but an infected WMF file could still attempt to make use of the Escape() function in GDI32.DLL (so at this point it is unclear if I can brag that my fileset protects against this completely). If you're an admin, apply the unofficial patch or go to work early and tell your users that of all the days to open spam "just to see what it says," the 5th is a really bad day to do it.

    WMF vulnerability

That is pretty funny, the SANS thing. cluberti, you are to be commended publicly on your courage, coming out with this info. We don't hold you personally responsible of course, but you must realize that most of what we do on this board is kinda doing what MS should have done, as saug notes... The thing is, Microsoft is only gonna throw you under the wheels of the bus. I don't think they care... at all. Oh sure, they'll issue a fix... but in their timeframe. For example, there is a published fix for the Win2k HALT bug, and I'm willing to bet my Tylyn John autographed photo that we won't see a fix for it until you actually say something to the powers that be. When we vent on MS, it's out of frustration at the fact that what we want is simply ignored. MSFN is also filled with testers too, of course. WE could test, and probably every language too... I'll give you an example of how willing we are to test whatever... When they introduced Crystal Pepsi, we all weighed in with our opinions. Remember that, guys? Sure, you do. It was New Year's 1993 and the doorbell rang... Oleg_II was dancing around with a lampshade on his head, I was playing Duelling Banjos with TommyP, and strippers cavorted completely hammered and throwing various meats and cheeses around the suite and we find out that PepsiCo had sent reps to the MGM Mirage in Vegas where we were staying. They came up to the suite -- it took some time to let them in, we didn't hear them at first with the Motley Crue blaring and besides, Saugatak had brought a monkey with him for kicks, and the monkey had gotten ahold of the rented midget's .45 (yeah, TommyP and I rent a midget for every New Year's party, so what?) and although the pistol wasn't loaded, we didn't know that at first... Everything went nuts when Tomcat76 screamed "Chimp with a GUN!!" but he managed to disarm him by distracting him with an inflatable Steve Jobs doll. Yep. Remember it like it was yesterday. I need to go to bed.

HAHAHA I love it. A quick and dirty hotfix that's not even Microsoft's and we've already dealt with slipstreaming it. I read in a discussion on Slashdot that unregistering SHIMGVW.DLL won't fix the problem; the problem is apprently in the GDI32.DLL.

    WMF vulnerability

hi folks, i know this is like a week old, but in case you've been too busy partying, due to a WMF vulnerability, "browsing the web was not safe anymore, regardless of the browser." http://www.hexblog.com/2005/12/wmf_vuln.html An unofficial, non-slipstreamable patch is available. It is NOT an MS patch, please read about it, don't ask how to slipstream it, don't ask why it isn't listed in the hotix list posts, just read and decide if you want to deploy it, since MS isn't doing anything at all to fix it.
  16. OMG, thanks TommyP -- I missed that Flame12121 wasn't using the auto-ISO creation!! Here is the direct link: http://www.vorck.com/hfslip-info.html#mkisofs <smacks forehead>

    New IE Removal Fileset

-I- , there is no regkey. but maybe there is a way to patch a DLL. i don't really know. i can look into it further i guess... it is kind of stupid, the way MS has it now.

    New IE Removal Fileset

xpmaniac4ever, sorry, no windows 2000 only. even worse for xp fans, i am next going to tackle windows 2003. win 2003 will be backward compatable with xp modifications so maybe i'll be able to do both at once. the goal is internet explorer registry entry removal in stage one, then file removal later, then we move on to other components. i will post beta file test sets as i go. i expect to get more of a start in january as i am visiting family for the rest of december. oleg_ii thanks for the SHELL.INF edit.

    New IE Removal Fileset

i like it. i think i want to focus on removing ie from win2003 now though. but additions to win2k's fileset are welcome of course, it's just moving on to a new thing now. oleg_ii, do you have 2003? more importantly, send me your email address. tomcat76, btw, i grabbed that photo and started to do a nasty photoshop of that "eight finger" girl but then i got a bit raunchy and thought "noooo, i better stop now before i decide to finish this and post"
  20. before HFSLIP, i had a hard core group of ie haters from 2001 to 2004 or so. i had 250 hits a day maybe. i got probably 5 e-mails a month from people IE removers who were new to the project, mostly hobbyists with low-end laptops that couldn't run XP. i get about 5 fanmails a week from non-MSFN'ers now, just saying thanks. word is spreading, thanks to search engines, and thanks to all of you who post and advocate for us in other communities outside of MSFN. out of nowhere hfslip gathered momentum and in about one month it became THE solution for slipstreaming windows 2000. the OS's fell into place. xp in february, finalized in april. 2003 in august, finalized in august. language support, new hotfixes, patch oddities, error reporting, iso creation were all added from september to november, and file removal (heavily tested by oleg_ii) was made public. driver integration and file replacement made their debut around the same time. MSFN users fueled the project to an incredible degree with bug swatting, testing, code edits and suggestions, modest requests, and patience with us while we pounded out new fixes and new versions. the thing is, this has all been within these past few months. the windows 2000 process alone got 8,070 hits in november. to put that in perspective, in 2004, it took me 4 months to get that many hits on that page. that's not just removing IE -- the hfslip page got 6,086 hits in november. the site had 18,382 unique visits (so some folks aren't reading past the first page, but that's only about 4,000 people as opposed to the 14,000 that DID. for whatever reason, i get about 1,000 mac users and about 200 or so linux users visiting a month. maybe they're lucky enough to have macs at home?) browser stats ... Firefox and opera are on the rise. hits by MSIE 6.0: 205694 hits by Netscape 5.x: 106630 (the web software reports mozilla, seamonkey, and firefox as "Netscape") hits by Internet Explorer 5.x: 8183 hits by Opera/8.50: 3906 (only this version, there are a scattered hundreds with earlier versions) A Worldwide Audience some of our top referrers: http://www.nliteos.com/links.html http://www.google.co.uk/search http://www.stopie.com/removingie/ http://search.yahoo.com/search http://www.google.com.au/search http://www.google.nl/search http://search.msn.com/results.aspx http://www.google.fr/search by a LONG shot, the top search term in all search engines is "hfslip" followed by "slipstream xp" and "windows 2000 sp5". There were 2,248 downloads of HFSLIP in November 2005, and 809 of my fileset. on behalf of myself and our favorite in-house rocket scientist tommyp our thanks go out to everyone who has helped bring us so far, so fast, and the enthusiasm and evangelism you've all done. happy upcoming new year to all... and if ya wanna raise a glass and meet tom, fred, and saugatak on december 28th, you still can, just PM us
  21. keep the ISO selected. in other words, on reboot second time... go to CD find Capture ISO Image is the ISO file still there? if not, find it. this may be a minor problem of the virtual PC losing track of the file on reboot of the vm. point it in the right direction and you should be able to beat this bit of Microsoft nonsense. and if not, you've come to a forum where nearly ALL of us have a TON of expertise we'll surely get this beat.

    HFSLIP Holiday Party

australia, huh? pretty cool. question: no matter WHAT i do i cannot create an INF that works with BartPE to get Partition Magic 8.xx functional. no matter what it says its unregistered. i have saved registration data in the files and it imports but seems to make zero difference. appreciate any info you can send (searched 911 forums and saw your post). sorry for the aside back to our regularly scheduled thread.

    HALT fix for Win2k?

I gotsta add mine too!! HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\HAL","14140000FFFFFFFF",0x00010001,0a,00,00,00 Can anyone confirm, BTW, if this really harms a non-HT proc? Or if it's just useless in non-HT?

    HALT fix for Win2k?

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=59364&st=0 rChaz tracked the solution down, it seems, but some say that it is only for systems using HyperThreading Technology? anyone? i applied the registry fix suggested, but this system i am testing on is HT. i'll try at home tonight to see if it makes a difference (i have a digital thermometer implanted in the cpu housing on my home machine so it will be easy to see if this works on a non-HT processor). here is an MS KB: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=835730 it says it relates to sound, but keep reading (note "This problem is caused by the incorrect interpretation of the timing values that are returned by the system when hyperthreading is enabled, and the computer power state changes.")
