    HFEXPERT

@RBCC, this post answers this in a roundabout way: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=59606 It's long, but Oleg_II was very thorough. It demonstrates how to set up drivers using HFEXPERT. If you are an HFSLIP'er and you don't bother using HFEXPERT, I recommend reading Oleg_II's post. At some point, Oleg_II left us, BTW, so that leaves the rest of us here to answer any questions.
  2. My Grandmother's Lemon Cake 1 box Duncan Hines Lemon Cake Mix 1 box instant Lemon pudding 1 tsp. lemon flavor 1 package lemon Jell-o 6 ounces Apricot nectar 1 can lemonade concentrate or 1 jar lemon curd 4 eggs 1 cup sour cream 1/2 cup oil Mix all ingredients. Beat for 10 minutes. Bake in a tube pan at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or a toothpick comes out dry. After the cake cools, take it out of the pan and spread lemon curd over the top, or pour undiluted lemonade over it. (Optional: mix lemonade with confectioner’s sugar first).
  3. (fixed i think.) new post to 'bump' this topic to announce an updated 2003 reg cleaner. this WILL kill internet explorer so only use it in a virtual machine (for those of you interested in following the work). if trying it out, tell me of any anomalies. i do check but the more folks checking, the better. i have something like 400kb of keys to go through but i really am making progress, albeit slowly. by the way. did everyone check out the win2k without ie versus with ie and versus xp comparison i set up? http://www.vorck.com/memorysavings.html i am hoping to get a similar result for 2003, using my registry files and tommyp's reduction sets.
  4. Slipstream dx9c, I'd recommend.
  5. <laughs> you're a rare one, using the MSFN search feature..! It's an uncommon skill here sometimes

Some new measurements by me, FWIW. This is really FDV fileset stuff, meant to supplement TommyP's figures above this post. http://www.vorck.com/memorysavings.html
  7. hey x-pert, thanks for taking a test drive. i don't see what you mean. i am looking at a vm right now with the inf cleaner applied and i dont see anything abnormal. the search pane looks fine to me. email me a screenshot if you could. thanks
  8. safe mode, or boot with something like BartPE or Knoppix to isolate software issues. if it happens again... check the power supply. (FDV, who had faulty power supplies do this to him in two separate pc's several years apart)

    Windows 2000 (all)

so i hear the 908531 fix messes things up when COM-accessing proggies are run. i am on a machine setting it up to update automatically (she's challenged) and need a way to prevent this kb from installing, so i wrote an inf to do that. here it is, for what it's worth, until M$ (which knows about it) can issue a fix. fake_908531.inf
  10. first of all, sorry you had all of that trouble with my fileset. the WINHTTP error never used to happen, but some hotfixes replaced the explorer and shell with new versions that integrated even more internet explorer garbage in them (take a look at the REGINST sections and calls to zones, etc in the core os files). the problem lies squarely on microsoft's shoulders. now, shutdown looks for this dll, winhttp, when it never used to. you've done a lot of troubleshooting and pretty much figured out everything you need to (your ability is certainly not 'limited') without needing the help from anyone here. nevertheless here's my recommendation FWIW. i have read your posts and am just 'thinking out loud' here. no idea which file it might be that's causing problems, but my recommendation is to ditch the winmodem. winmodems are software-driven beasts that may have all sorts of ie-file dependencies. who knows what it's missing. you'd have to do a regmon.exe and sit and watch what the thing tries to look for and even then it's certainly no guarantee you'd find the actual names of files it thinks that it wants. The installation failed problem... look in your start menu. All users have "MRU Killer" INF in there, and it's a Registry cleaner for Most Recently Used entries. Non-admin users can't mod the registry, hence "Installation failed."
  11. From a different thread... SFC_OS.DLL No editing is required. Just drop the file into FIX. not much other than the DLLs are indeed different. the edits to them are pretty much the same. i was never good with assembly. oleg clued me in to where the edits are, passed on from x-pert. he could tell us more of whats going on. <shines the secret x-pert signal into the sky>
  12. See if this works It would be all you need. It would let you modify anything. Don't forget to run a MODIFYPE on it. Forged CAT files won't work.

    Windows 2000 (all)

have not tried them yet in a virtual pc, and maybe i am wayyy off base here, but i wanted to draw people's attention to this post: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=72161 perhaps the IE update will cause users some serious problems?
  14. @Kiki Burgh - Ohhh, I see. We just had a filename mixup. You had "sfc_files.dll ... is not quite well compatible with winXP" but you meant SFC.DLL, not SFCFILES. SFC.DLL without the word "files" in it is, in fact, for Windows 2000 only, as TP directs. SFCFILES is, after all, only just a list. So nothing to see here @Camarade_Tux - Damian advocates just SFCFILES replacement. I have corresponded with him in the past and what he is referring to is only SFCFILES being emptied out. Note he says "So WFP is on" in paragraph 3. So, to have WFP off, use a modified SFC.DLL or SFC_OS.DLL and to avoid the OS loading up a list of protected files use also an empty SFCFILES.DLL. In other words, see my post above called the "overkill" method. @Everybody Anyway, everybody make sure you've added yourself to the HFSLIP world map.
  15. never even thought about that. good idea ... added!
  16. Today's little diversion. Add yourself, for no apparent reason. http://www.frappr.com/hfslip
  17. @tain someone will pounce on me for this, but here goes.i encourage people to really think about doing this... i turn it back on after i install. i am SO tired of installing apps and having them replace my dlls. i also do installs on systems other than my own (yeah, they're licensed, calm down you panicky types). the last thing i need is trying to troubleshoot someone's pc because some stupid game made for windows 95 replaced their ole32.dll when they installed it. wfp is noticeable during the setup phase. each file that gets installed gets checked. switch WFP off and setup can really fly. i keep unmodified copies on the installed CD as "SFC.DLL.OLD" and etc. when i want to turn sfc back on, i do a switch by booting into safe mode or using bartpe. @Kiki Burgh well, i'm the guy who hosts the dll and source. i need to know what not quite means here. i'd love to see a link to that thread so i can see what the problems are.
  18. Standing by for documentation changes. On a different subject... SFCFILES.DLL by the way works on ALL versions of Windows, just to clear that up. SFC.DLL and SFC_OS.DLL are different matters entirely. You can use SFCFILES.DLL and no other modified binaries and SFC will be disabled. To recap, for the confused To shut Windows File Protection off: Use a modified SFC.DLL in Windows 2000 Use a modified SFC_OS.DLL in Windows XP and Windows 2003 No need for a modified SFCFILES.DLL To disable Windows File Protection causing it to check an empty list: Use a modified SFCFILES.DLL in ANY version of Windows No need for a modified SFC*.DLL For complete overkill, so that Windows File Protection is shut off AND has an empty list which it doesn't even check: Use a modified SFC.DLL in Windows 2000 Use a modified SFC_OS.DLL in Windows XP and Windows 2003 AND Use a modified SFCFILES.DLL in ANY version of Windows
  19. See C:\WINNT\security\templates and for win 2000 workstation, open basicwk.inf See also sceregvl.inf I make edits to basicwk.inf in some settings because it makes me nuts that users cannot change the time. that means any time synch program they run also lacks that right, which is really stupid. MS just wants us all to run the time service, but I don't want to run their software for this. Anyway, I (obviously) use the hacked setup DLLs, so I am not sure if you can edit this file and recompress it and have it work without Windows complaining. I suspect that you can.

    W2k vs Xp

So TommyP the other day was telling me about a dead HD he had, and he got it to work for recovering data after disassembling it and manually mucking with the platters, as opposed to trying to troubleshoot the Integrated Drive Electronics (the little circuit board). (!) This stuff listed by Kramy and Tomcat76 makes me think a lot of you guys try stuff with hardware I simply don't have the guts to try (And then of course we have the stories about people who don't know better, like a friend of mine in college who hot-swapped a bunch of PCI cards in his system and then as if that weren't bad enough, plugged them back in in different slots hoping to resolve an IRQ conflict... Me: "Mike, you should do that with the power OFF..." Him: "Whatever, dude...")

    W2k vs Xp

Squeeto, the statement I made is accurate, the Post SP4 hotfix has the problem. You don't need to wonder if you have it, however, because as Tomcat noted, it is fixed when using HFSLIP.
  22. The CPU HALT instruction is no more with the Post SP4 hotfix. That means that when your CPU is idle, it won't throttle down. So if your PC is just sitting there, not doing anything, chances are that the CPU can (in some settings) overheat. More information here.
  23. i dont like this either in 2003. i saw this post and decided to devote 20 mins to putting something out there i deleted ZIPFLDR.DLL from dllcache and system32 answer "keep" when windows file protection prompts (make sure your ISO or install CD isn't within access, or the stupid file will come right back) right click on this INF which is attached it will disassociate zip files with this dll. reboot, the dll might be loaded into memory. either that, or use task manager to stop and restart explorer. now, the task for you is to pick your favorite archival program and create an assoication with zips, rars, etc. note that if you just associate an executable, it might just open the program and not the actual file, so you'll probably need to craft a clever command line within the registry to open the program as well as the file you have selected. i'll leave that for you guys, its late, i gotta go to bed edit: i neglected to state that this works in xp as well as 2003. de_zipfldr.inf
  24. You want to hide processes from the Windows API. (That's what we mean when we use the term "rootkit.") This is nontrivial and demands a level of skill that cannot be imparted casually to you. In other words, you are asking to be taught something that most of us don't teach, certainly not at MSFN. If you simply want to keep a program from showing up (but it still lists in the running processes) then Google the term "boss key software".
  25. It's stuff I have to learn, but I (and tommyp) have been borking around with Kubuntu and it looks like WINE can run several Windows apps right in Linux. Ultimately we might go with different distros but the fact that he and I both gravitated to the same distro within a few days of starting to look at alternatives to Windows tells you that it's probably friendly enough for a lot of folks in this forum. I mean let's face it, folks, MS doesn't support it's operating systems in a meaningful way... Windows NT 4 SP 7? Nope, 200 hotfixes, that'll make 'em upgrade! Windows 2000 SP 5? Nope, 200 hotfixes, that'll make 'em upgrade! The fact that two MSFN members had to create a solution for Windows 2000's growing number of fixes (and not M$ themselves) pretty much tells you how little they care. Even M$'s fixes have errors in them. There is a massive learning curve to Linux, but it's becoming something that I'm fairly certain I should learn, because even though Microsoft is a behemoth now, mark my words, they're on the decline. It's not how good the Linux OS is, Mister Ballmer, it's how badly you've burned your existing user base. This is turning into a rant and I'm gonna stop now BTW, if you like OpenOffice, you might want to skip installing Write and try Abiword. An aside on OOo... I used to worry about MS Office compatability with my own docs. Until the day I upgraded to Office XP. I had a 5 client license and the install went south when the MS server shut my installation key off. I called MS and they told me I had no recourse, sorry about that. Instead of asking what I needed to do (I knew she was going to tell me to "buy it again") I informed her of a 'solution' I had to my problem that 1) was perfectly legal to me under the law but 2) she was REALLY UNHAPPY to hear about... Office XP broke all of my mail merge docs, broke compatability with my Access databases necessitating a complete redesign... What a nightmare... I am looking at OpenOffice for my workplace instead of Office 2007 Extra Money Edition With the Give Us More Cash Plus Pack TM. PS if you click any of the links in here, be SURE you click the "Mister Ballmer" link...
