  1. hi guys, januh has the solution. the process was meant to lead folks and the files have english in them because they started as english files. if you look at shell.inf for example, you'll see why the program groups are in english. you have to tailor your language files to be the same. or, you should change the english in my inf files to reflect the language you wish. if i detailed the changes in each file, the lists would be rather huge, so creating a fileset was the easiest thing for me to do. feel free to change my files and host them, or you can send your language files (inf, etc etc) to me and i can include them on my site for downloading.

  3. well, uhh, no need for that... convert your REG files to INF. put these lines in your *HIV* files (HIVESFT.INF, HIVESYS.INF, those). save the file. install, etc. I put HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters","EnableBigLba",0x10001,01,00,00,00 in HIVESFT. feel free to put the REG files in HFSVPK when running HFSLIP, which makes this easier.

the small one, a png, should have a transparent alpha channel. i'll fix the larger one's blue box in a few days.

Tomcat76 well, rocket, on the right, could use a boyfriend... she's loud and has a list of requirements in men a mile long though, hahaha... as for wendy on my left she is pointing off into space, typical blonde Kramy well, thats why i made http://vorck.com/images/hfslip-exroidal.png a court ruled in photoshop's favor, actually.Justice Napoleon wrote for the court that "Photoshop is flippin' SWEET." Exroydal almost sent Sinistar to eat your ELK CHILI and angelina jolie to drink all of your beer and pass out on your couch!!!!

Done thanks all p.s. transparent background of my sig instead of blue: http://vorck.com/images/hfslip-exroidal.png tomcat76 version with "kramy processing" featuring New Improved White Remover: http://vorck.com/images/hfslip-no-exroydal.png (Although Exroydal will become testy if he is not displayed and he will be tempted to make all of your Elk chili disappear). Speaking of which, TAiN i think i left my barbecue sauce in your 'fridge? Need to go to bed... here for no apparent reason is a picture of me in a kilt. the HFSLIP Comparison Matrix.

    New logo to use

before the week is out (i hope) i'll re-p'shop the originals to have the light blue background otherwise ie users will see the wrong color, since ie has had an alpha channel display bug since August 27th, 2001. hey wait, that's a 1,659 day old bug!
  8. workstation implies no active directory. that's what's winning anyway -- might as well give folks what they want, and it seems to be 'workstation' without IIS and without IE. if workstation, then it wouldn't run several things that the server product would. i'll kill those keys as well, unless folks think otherwise. (the product would still register within AD when a server looks at it, no worry there.) p.s. i do not want to start a browser flamewar, but i happen to know ScubaSteve is a fan of Opera. thought i would add that before someone jumps on him for thinking he was advocating IE
  9. Wait a few minutes, MS will issue a new one Or maybe it's a huge bug security feature... There have been, to my memory, 8 versions of this control now... done, I am guessing, to keep the binary patchers so busy that the control can't ever be hacked and also be the current version at the same time.
  10. TommyP has been busy doing work on file reduction for 2003. I have the reduction data but have only got back from visiting relatives so I have not tried it all out, but will. For my part, I set to cleaning out the registry. The way it's going now, it looks like the stuff I will be removing in the registry will probably destroy web server capability as IIS anyway, and will damage some wizards (but that will not be sad news to any of you -- 2003 has more "manage this and that" wizards than any other Microsoft OS I have ever seen). And here, for no apparent reason, is a recipe for Elk chili.
  11. Log in as Admin search for Desktop.ini and Folder.htt Delete them (heck, delete all of them if ya like) Disclaimer: this will do what you want, but might also do something bad, I have no idea, I stopped using the HTML subsystem in Windows several years ago.
  12. We'll do While I am at it, are any other links messed? Might as well ask now. The instructions are, I think, up-to-date, but I am not sure if links are. (Not asking anyone to go click crazy, but if you're aware of something, lemme know)
  13. TAiN, no need to add that patch. your system pre-dates that odd 16 bit subsystem error, so that probably isn't the culprit. not sure about this.

    Bug in my fileset

    yes, errors are fixed...
  15. frankly i think any winner will be a function of the OS the person uses. i do not use windows xp, i think it's a piece of garbage, and i think i'm being kind. i use windows 2000 and 2003... i can understand the appeal of the ryanvm for an xp user who just got xp yesterday and they don't want to download lots of ms patches. the interface peculiarities are so weird in that os, just figuring out how to do something simple (such as making the window controls bigger or showing the recycle bin) makes me have to stop and really concentrate on something that should be more straightforward, but i'm off on a tangent. as for 2003, there is no unofficial pack to download... as for 2000, there is an unofficial pack for it, and no disrespect at all to the other MSFN win 2000 enthusiast who compiles it, but even though i have a high bandwidth connection, i don't want to have to re-download a 227 meg service pack a few weeks after every patch day festival. (even if i did want to, though, HFSLIP is compatable with that).
  16. hi luke, in general as nateklomp notes this is best posted in the nlite forum. what would be best is if you re-run nlite. import your last session. put msyuv.dll in the KEEP box. proceed normally.

    Bug in my fileset

@RJARRRPCGP - yeah, that was why, heh... it should be fine now. the link and the files, that is. @Squeeto - yep that's the error, one big line means these values dont get merged correctly of course. as for H323TSP, i'll check into that.

    Bug in my fileset

Somehow an error snuck into HIVESFT.INF This mainly effects the 16 bit subsystem. Ironically, you'd have trouble using HFSLIP! Here's the thing. You don't have to go nuts reinstalling. I am making a patch also as well as fixing the fileset. Sorry... I'm an idi0+ for letting that slip by... Patch attached. It's the only error I found in the fileset. I run hfslip in a virtual machine anyway... Ever since TP told me to switch from Microsoft Virtual PC to VMWare... WOW. Huge difference. I can work while the VM works without having to give it foreground focus like the Microsoft product which is WAY slower. Anyway, the patch is here if ya need it. If this doesn't fix things, then I'm still not sure... Maybe these registry edits hafta happen before the 16 bit subsystem is started... oct_2k5_patch.inf

    Updates - Feb 14

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms06-feb.mspx As usual thanks to this trio for keeping lists for the rest of us to have a fast look at...
  20. hi folks! i am wondering if 2003 and xp support the same devices/have the same driver set on cd. let me clarify by explaining what i am doing. i am building a server that will have 2003 on it. i am going to put an LSI DC-390U3 scsi controller in it with 2 scsi drives. i know that windows xp has drivers for this card and recognizes it automatically upon install. i want to transplant the controller card into this new machine i am building and want 2003 to recognize it, because there aren't any 2003 drivers on the manufacturer's website.* i could make a bartpe of 2003 to test but it's a waste if one of you folks know the answer, and i have no doubt that someone here does, msfn has a lot of 2003 experts. thanks for any help... fdv Additional details for the 2003 wizards who might need this info, I don't know if its relevant *okay, for those of you who want to reply on this point, i didnt want to get into this in the body of the question, but here it is. the manufacturers, LSI and Tekram, have a driver for "2000 and xp." i tested the driver in a 2003 virtual machine and it gave me an error saying that the INF was bad because it had a "line missing" (which one? didn't say) and was due to the driver being for "windows 95 or later" even though the INF had the $Windows NT$ signature string, not $chicago$. however, i have a BartPE made from winXP laying around. i stuck this cd in the machine the scsi controller is in right now, and it booted right up and recognized the controller and drives. so, i know for sure that the microsoft driver on the install cd for xp works fine. i have not tested the manufacturer-provided xp driver in xp, however. it should be noted that the MS and manufacturer drivers are, in fact, different.
  21. The HFSLIP forum hereby sends strippers and two kegs of Guiness and Newcastle to Gurglemeyer in this forum. The strippers have been instructed to make chicken soup between resuscitative efforts Get well, dude - Your fellow Windows hackers, right down the hall and to the left here at MSFN
  22. hey just to clarify, the link ya quoted goes to the SP 4 instructions. the link you want goes to an SP 5 page. (i think its time to take down the sp 4 stuff anyway... who the heck uses this old material, and it only causes confusion.)
  23. @Oleg_II - 2003 winnt.sif components list... it would be the same pretty much as XP's. but keep in mind if any of that stuff actually worked, we wouldn't need tools like my fileset or nlite i dont trust that file for component removal so am proceeding with the INF route. btw folks who are reading this and wondering what i'm talking about, TommyP, Oleg_II and I are slowly making progress on de-crapifying 2003 server. one of the things we have to decide is what role we want it to play. in other words, do we rip out server components to make it more like a workstation OS? do we rip out junk like IIS so it can still be a 'server' but a document server, not a web server? i am figuring i will work toward making it a desktop OS for now. i anticipate putting a new page on my site in a few days on 'workstation-ifying' 2003*, which will include how exactly to hack (with pictures) SETUPAPI.DLL so that we can have more people joining in to hack around with the OS. *yes, we are aware of the 'turn 2003 server into workstation' thread elsewhere on msfn. it's just really not as thorough as we would like. more later.

    Article on slashdot

You know, this is one of the reasons I hate Slashdot, if I can b*tch a little. The bury TAiN's advice because moderators don't read correctly (moderation is rotating, if you are a member and log in regularly, one day, you will have mod powers randomly). They don't read flat, they read nested, for example, and read at 2 or 3 instead of -1... but that's Slashdot-specific stuff. On slashdot, some id*** suggests SYSPREP which has nothing to do with slipstreaming hotfixes, and the comment gets the highest marks from clueless mods who give marks to loudmouthed authoritarians rather than people who simply state correct answers. Include a statement about Liberals versus Conservatives, for example, and people give those comments top points. Meanwhile TAiN's answer wallows in obscurity. I submit this to Digg, it goes nowhere. Though arguably people reading Digg will give high marks to sensational crap like a new version of the iPod being announced or something. Usenet? It never catches on. People go to freakin' Microsoft and search the KB for their answers?!?!? WTF!?!? What else bothers me is that people Fight. So. F??kin. HARD. against this knowledge. And why? Some people are addicted to unattended installs and would rather tweak for a month straight instead of using HFSLIP and being done in 10 minutes. Some other imb*cile out there who will remain unnamed has an entire site crediting himself for removing Windows components, claims _he_ taught Nuhi rather than vice-versa, and discourages people from visiting these forums. Because he wants fame, glory, and wants Windows hacking to be 'all his'. Nice. I guess it boils down to marketing (Windows' success in the marketplace proves this I guess). We don't market HFSLIP. Granted, word of mouth has made it rather huge very quickly, but by now, more Sysadmins should know about it. It should be something every admin "just knows" about, like you flash the BIOS on a new motherboard you just bought, you run backups, and you make Windows with HFSLIP. Okay, done with my rant. Sorry. But I really had to get that off my chest.
