Yes, chipset is KT133 but in Athlon, you have a "Double Data Rate" which means that it supports 266FSB. See quote below.

I need to talk with somebody that truly is experienced in putting together a computer. If you want to help me out...please PM me and I will let you know what I have and what I want to have. Rick

Yes, that is part of M$'s .net strategy to get more info. from the web. It can be a helper (there's a lot of info on their server instead of clogging our little PC's) I am not for them probing computers but seriously, I think that we can get a little too paranoid sometimes. Put on a good firewall and give M$ access to what you trust them with and you will be fine. Rick

Well...the volcano one worked but nothing on "not evil".

Very cool...works on WinMe...if I were a developer, I would have to do something like this just to keep it fun. Rick

VoptMe is what I used under FAT32 in WinMe and it was by far the fastest that I could find. Haven't tried it under XP. Diskeeper was okay but I had to run it several times in order to get my HD completely defraged. Are you saying that you tried VoptMe under XP with NTFS? Rick

Oh, this totally sucks!!!! This is a MicronPC board and I bought the CPU from Thompson's Computer Warehouse. I called them and a very knowledgeable guy recognized my board right away. He said that Micron tried to dump this off on them about nine months ago because the reality is that even though it is supposed to support 266FSB, it will not support anything beyond a Duron. It will not POST at anything above like 900gHz. I am stuck having to buy a newer board and power supply but the guy was very nice and gave me an RMA with no questions asked. Just on a side note...I highly recommend Thompson's Computer Warehouse because their prices are almost too good to be true and their stuff is quality. tcwo.com Rick

I bought a 1.4gHz AMD Athlon OEM chip with 200FSB and I am very confused about what will actually work with my computer. Supposedly after reading support info from the site I bought it from, if my chipset is a KT133, then there is a double rate or something with Athlon where I can buy a 266FSB. Okay is that true for a KT133 chipset? If it is true, I screwed up and bought a 200FSB when I shoud have bought a 266FSB. How do I change the settings in my mobo in order to support the 200FSB? Rick

I encountered an error where a screen popped up and the file could not be found and I had to go into the system files of my old installation of XP to get it. Rick

Yeah, don't you get the sense that there was a real big push to get the RTM out before DOJ stopped them? Normally, M$ is never on time and to see them push out early? Yeah, I believe that there will be some major updates to be made when it hits the shelf. Now that DOJ is off their backs, they can actually take the time to get it right. Rick

Here's the problem...I want to do the right thing and go buy the software but look at the rediculous prices. Most people in this world have a budget to live on and they simply can't pay those kinds of prices for every upgrade. This XP is a major upgrade, mind you, and think about the alternatives to M$'s OS? Not much there even though some will argue that Linux is great, it is not nearly as easy to use as windows and compatibility is an even bigger issue. I would feel for M$ if their top two guys didn't make over $60 billion per year! I believe in free enterprise and I see no problem if M$ kicks butt but they should respect what they have and come way down on their prices. You can't tell me that they need to charge that much because of research that has gone into developing the software or some bullcrap like that! Just my take! Rick

Learn something new every day...Why is it that video cards seem to always cause so many probs? Got a cdrom not working? Check the video card! LOL Rick

Try using a program like TweakXP...it may help to redistribute some of your memory and cache usage. There is a feature in there that helps to handle memory with more than 512K. May do absolutely nothing for you but if you haven't tried, may be worth it. Rick

I'll give that one a try Chris...I could never get the delay to work right. I'm not totally giving up on ZA because it has been really great and caused me no probs till recently but I am too frustrated to try to fix it now. Rick
-
I have used ZA on earlier versions of XP betas with no probs but this RTM has just been one problem after another. I read Aaron's post about it starting too early and I tried to delay it with his program and nothing. Basically, my computer would start up and no Zone Alarm in sys. tray. Erratically too..not every time. It was not there but my internet would be completely locked down...even if I shut down ZA. I would have to restart and usually it would come up right the second time. I even tried starting ZA manually and still it would decide to work on one startup and not on the other??? Too crazy for me so I dumped the darn program and I'm going to try Norton FW. Soooo frustrating! Rick:mad:

Here are my motherboard stats...chipset says KT133...does that mean my FSB is 133? So Bill Gates is the antichrist! I thought for sure that Bill Clinton would be it but he proved to be too much a fool for the job, then others said George W. will definetely have to be it now but I'm thinking definetely not. Has to be Gates! (Disclaimer: The above is only a joke. Do not go to the other boards and tell everybody that you found out Bill Gates is the antichrist because they will think you are crazy and will not believe you until he takes over the world.) LOL Rick

Where do I look to find out if I have 200FSB or 266? I looked up my specs on Mirconpc's site and it gives everything except that. Rick

I want to upgrade my processor from Duron 700 to Athlon 1.4. I found prices for the chip ranging from $250 all the way down to $120. I always look on computershopper and I have come across some very good deals that way. The highest price was from gateway.com and the lowest is from a site called Thompson Computer Warehouse or something similar. How can they sell a chip so much cheaper than the others and are there different grades that are made? The link to Thompson is: h*tp://www.tcwo.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_prod.html?p_prodid=1299 What do you think? Rick

I'm sure that M$ can set up your computer to be probed in several ways but I doubt that they do it to attack you personally if they do it at all. I am thinking of Windows Update or sending error reports. Technically, M$ could grab all kinds of info but if they do, there is nothing that they can legally do with it because their disclaimer says that none of your computers info is being sent to M$. It is an illegal practice so if you're worried about getting yout computer taken away by the M$ police, forget about it. They may just use the info to try to make better anti-piracy software. Rick

You can reinstall 100 times if you want the same as you did in Win98. I am one of those stubborn and lazy people who is too lazy to back up all 17 gigs of my stuff to do a clean install instead of an upgrade. Rick

LOL...he's right. We will all be looking crazy with our candles because everybody's planning to do it. Of course, if you are in the UK you missed 7PM by about 5 hours!! BTW--I think it is sooo awesome the way the people in UK and other countries have reacted. The changing of the guard with American National Anthem playing really made me all teary eyed. Rick

Take a look at this article...it should help you out a little. h*tp://www.microsoft.com/net/whatis.asp Rick

Okay...in case somebody stumbles across this problem. I was able to resolve the issue of not being able to Hotsync by downloading the latest version of Palm Desktop 4.0 and after uninstalling the old and putting on the updated, it works fine. Don't know if the old was incompatible because it had worked on earlier builds of XP but then again some of my other things, such as scanner worked fine in earlier versions and now will not work at all.
