  1. if XP is running fine and all your hardware works, why have 98 on the pc at all? wipe it all off and start afresh! be faster... less hassle, easyier to reformat in future too. lazy? well... its probably the only time you should have to do it for ages and ages, be worth it in the end
  2. id be amazed if i could, i wiped it off LOL
  3. he means, [i:5aa39d3aaf]"why havent i been allowed into the FTP section"[/i:5aa39d3aaf] Rick... lol ill go sort that out for you hermit
  4. did that help or not? is it workin yet?
  5. are you doing a clean install? DONT UPGRADE!!! it asks you for a passowrd and username just before ( or after i think ) it tells you the computer name ( and gives you the option to change it to something like BETTY instead of MSajsdFDVD-67 or whatever ) the default user is set to Administrator, change it to your username if you like and make sure you add a password let us know how you get on
  6. well it works anyway netstat is probably my most used comman, and all its variables. ive got into a bit of a habbit, checking for trojans and spyware, whenever i thinks somethings a bit sus' i have a look, **** usefull too
  7. in edonkey make sure the option !allways stay connected" is ticked, if your on 56k set max upload to 2, download to 6, set max connections to 200. once you manage to connect you will find it easier to get on in future as your servers list will be more uptodate
  8. cool... as far as i know tracert didnt work on win98 did it? this because XP has full raw sockets i expect... or maybe im wrong about tracert not working on 98....
  9. Hi haribo, welcome to the boards first off, by the sounds of it you upgraded with the XP install, NEVER do this as you end up with problems and a lot of mess left on your hard disc. probably the most common complaint we hear about when people install XP is "it doesent like my modem" when you bought the laptop it came bundled with a cheap modem ( they usually do ) and so its not very well supported by the manufacturers in terms of new drivers etc, im not sure about Laptop modems ive never bought one, but it should only cost you about £20 to £30 for a newer, faster modem that wont hog so much of your systems rescources! not a bad upgrade for the cash you should see a big improvement in your connection if you do. make sure you get a hardware modem and you should be fine, if its Win2k compatible its probably also XP compatible, try the 2k drivers and if they dont work there should be an update for it. or.. if you have an external modem why not try that? if the only flag thats popped up is your modem, id say thats pretty lucky as your new, please read the [b:416c74f488]forum rules[/b:416c74f488][/color:416c74f488] Haribo, no duplicate posts, your new ill let you off, normally we send the boys round :nerves
  10. theres no need for the * anymore guys, just dont tick "automatically parse URLs"
  11. ill go thru this tutorial as though you are using Restorator, but you can use Winhack, Colledit etc if you like. you can get Restorator from: http://www.bome.com/Restorator/ 1) Start restorator up, an open the loginui.exe file found in your C:WINDOWSsystem32 folder. 2)Now, expand the bitmap tree and extract the images to a directory on your desktop, now you can edit all of these in a pait program, Fireworks, Paintshop etc. when you have edited each one, go to the file you want to replace in Restorator, eg, the main background image 001.bmp, click on it in the tree and it will appear on the right hand side, go back to the file on your desktop and highlight it, now press CTRL+C to copy it, back in Restorator click on the image in the right window and press CTRL+V to paste your new image in, do this with all the images until you are happy with them all. 3)Now for the background colors, fonts etc. these are found in the UIFILE/1000. click on the 1000 file and scroll down till you get to the text. when you get to this bit stop. <style resid=framess> element { background: argb(0,1,57,202); } element [id=atom(contentcontainer)] { background: rgb(1,57,202); } button { background: rcbmp(112,6,#FF00FF,0,0,1,0); borderthickness: rect(8,8,0,8); The bit in red is the bit we are interested in, its the main background color, you can find out the RGB value for colors with your paint program in "define custom colors" it shows you the Red, Green, and Blue values on the right hand side when you select a color you want to use, simply type these numbers into the 1000 file, dont worry if the color value in the 1000 file is more than three values, just leave the FIRST one as 0. Right click on the 1000 file window in Restorator, and select "tool window", now click on the ABC| tab and edit it, then press F8 to apply your changes, other parts of the 1000 file you might want to edit are: </style> <style resid=toppanelss> element { background: argb(0,0,0,0); } element [id=atom(toppanel)] { background: rgb(25,34,63); } element [id=atom(divider)] { background: rcbmp(125,6,#FF00FF,0,0,1,0); This is the color of the top panel, you can also set this as a gradient like the bottom one is by using the code highlighted in red below inplace of the red code for the top panel, the gradient is just two RGB values. <style resid=bottompanelss> element { background: argb(0,0,0,0); } element [id=atom(bottompanel)] { background: gradient(argb(0,0,10,141), argb(0,248,202,80), 0); fontface: rcstr(2); } element [id=atom(divider)] { background: rcbmp(126,6,#FF00FF,0,0,1,0); Ill finish this later... to be continued.
  12. this will be usefull also, it tells you if windows is activated etc.. http://fthrjack.homestead.com/files/wininfo.zip

  14. ive got a packard bell, and i agree with you Lou, ill never buy one again, ill always build from now on, after all, i can make myself a system thats faster and beter than anything in the shops, and it would only cost about half the price of most of the "top of the range" models in the local Staples or Currys store etc. i cant install an AGP card in my AGP mobo :wail: its AGP, but theres no slot, so, until i finish building the new comp (which will be ages as xmas is soon here) im stuck using a crap on board card. One of the main problems folks have with installing XP is that their obscure modems dont work, thats because companies like Compaq and packard bell almost always install some crappy AMR slot pile of s***e, first thing i pulled out of my machine was the AMR modem, and then turned the other half of it of in the BIOS. Take a look at Aaron.. he bought his new Pc ready built and a few weeks later the NIC card fried itself... ill always build my own then i know for sure that whats in it is what i asked for and not cheap s*** or even ( as in my AGP slot case ) not even there when you asked for it...
  15. erm.. corporate is a real product, as well as the cracked thing too, the "crack" is merely a way of turning xp pro into "corporate"
  16. "the cleaner" try norton anti virus first though

  19. microsoft have removed the WTC from the final version of flightsim 2002 to stop sick pricks crashing into them, but, one question, what they gonna do when the WTC is rebuilt?
  20. you never mentioned the drivers.... go install them..... then come back and the place i found the option for APM was different to power options, it had less in it, just two tabs if i remember rightly and one was labeled for APM
  21. nope, theres a mix up here, on my pc i cant find it either, but i dnt need to, when i fixed the problem on the pc that was being awkward it was in a place called power [b:121f6bf185]MANAGEMENT[/b:121f6bf185] like drew called it, its what made me fix the problem, id looked before and not found it, but when i saw that option i remembered what drew said to me and fixed it in a flash, it was the same, (or similar) icon to power [b:121f6bf185]OPTIONS[/b:121f6bf185]. now, to find that **** box, because it doesent appear on my pc, probably as i dont have that shutdown problem... errrr ill get back to you, oh, an chill out... jeez its not as though your pc kicks you in the nuts everytime you shutdown, no need to bite drews head off or mine :nerves hmm.. a pc that kicks people in the nuts, im waiting ... we have had everything else i suppose LOL
  22. ive not tried bootvis yet... ill let you guys screw things up first and see if its any good lol the intended results sound good though, after installing zonealarm and antivirus and that soundblaster card my comp now boots as fast as 98 did.. not good is it :wail:
  23. yup.. i posted that up also, you missed it lol
  24. Microsoft's Chief Technology Officer Craig Mundie found himself in an embarrassing position on Tuesday, facing a security forum just days after Microsoft's Passport, which is key to their whole .Net strategy, was found to be insecure. Mundie admitted that Microsoft engineers had overlooked many things which hackers exploited. "In a way you could say it was a bit naive." However, he maintained that Microsoft would still be able to make secure systems. Even Microsoft rivals like AOL approved of Mundie's speech. "There is a lot to be said about Microsoft's progress in cooperating with the industry on privacy," AOL said. However, they feel that Microsoft doesn't approach the problem the right way.
