i installed the new Lindows 3.0 and tada!! sound now works any good mp3 share tools on Linux? lets compare and see whats different with lsmod when i use the Cdplayer that comes with Lindows tho i get no sound, the cable is plugged into the sound card too so it should work.. oh hum ill try another player. but sound is working other than that. **update, i tell lies, the cable was plugged into the DVD drive, but it worked no matter which drive i played music in under windows. oh hum no biggie.

mandrake will be harder to learn if you have never used linux before.. but it IS one of the more friendly distros, another is Lycoris. both install easy enough etc. the pain with it is the RPMs, thats what made me stop using it. i keep smackin myself up the side of the head for not trying debian, but its more of a chore to install, but once you have it installed, getting software is a dodle as i described. on monday lindowsOS 3.0 is released, try that for a bit and when you feel ready try a "proper" distro. Lindows should be renamed Linux Junior imo some screenies in the thread in software, on bypassing "click-n-run" with lindows, dunno why i posted them there, DOh! they are the default look.. not done anything to it really yet.

dont consumers in america have ANY rights? you should be able to return it even if it does have some dumb note saying you cant, check your rights! Also.. you bought it on a credit card... over here that counts as a credit agreement (kinda) and you have a period of days (i think 7) that you can return it anyway. failing that, how did you order it? if by post or something wait till your CC bill comes then ring the credit card company and scream theft. you will have to get a new card issued etc.. lot of hassle but if you want your cash back... if you went in the store and bought it and your on camera too forget it, you will land in court! lol if you bought it on the web.. well your ip might get looked up = same result. i would expect the card company wouldnt bother investigating a small claim like that tho and just issue you a new card and reverse the transaction.

Drews correct, its just a linux distro with some things renamed, such as My computer, My ducoments etc.. to make a windows user more familiar with it from the start. Funny tho.. i hardly ever use "my computer" or "my documents" on linux.... Some Linux users rename stuff like that anyway, and ive seen plenty of screenshots where people are using WindowsXP style icons, FOOOD has good icons sets, as he does them in PNG flavour too its good for linux (cant use ico) its a common mistake to think its half and half, just because the name is. it DID used to look pretty similar to win98 tho.. remember back then? it even had a START button.
-
cheers zivian, i figured it out before you posted.. about 2 hours ago i put the .o extension on, but it still works. and dchp is sorted out automatically as it should be too, no need to do release / refresh now. ill check that link out, thanks bud

no thats to download and install it. you only have to do the apt-get update, and get synaptic because they arent on the system to start off, and you need to update it. its like installing windows then getting latest drivers... infact thats exactly what it is -- a COMPLETE system update, new drivers and files and program updates. can that be done in windows with a single command line? we wish you could hehe synaptic is just a GUI for apt, makes finding files and using apt easier. to put doom on windows you would have to download it, unzip it, install it. in debian you would have to put in console: apt-get install doom then run it, you wouldnt even have to open a web browser.

gamma, thats some kick a** tips regards the network, thanks man that helped me a LOT! no more doing modprobe natsemi, and then release / renew each boot up!! i knew it could be placed in some file someplace but hadnt found which. **update- no modules.autorun file in lindows, but think ive found how anyway, i opened modules.conf and it told me where to look, dont edit modules.conf though! i edited etc/modules and just added natsemi.o on the bottom, its doing the trick, thanks for the tip GaMMa, saved me a lot of headache just curious... can you get msn messenger working under wine? (properly) im using everybuddy right now, but it would be cool to have msn working on linux once sound is working ill be a happy man, the ac97 module is loaded, the onboard sound is ac97, but no sound should be ok once i get the soundblaster back in the machine tho. @Cripsy, just make a 2gb partition on your disc and install something like debian or lindows, they are both easy for installing programs on using synaptic, i hated hunting down libs and rpms on red hat and mandrake, it put me off a lot. dual boot if you just want to try it out. @ ChrisPS, for games.. well theres a few im "getting" just now. quake 3, simcity 3000, might and magic 3. also in console (under debian or lindows) try: apt-get update once thats finished do apt-get install synaptic once thats done youhave synaptic, a GUI for apt. Now do exec syanaptic synaptic should open, you can search for doom, highlight it, click install then click on the button with the gears on, "proceed" and it will download doom and any thing else you added for download. it only took about 2 minutes if that. then just alter dooms setup so it is fullscreen and the res is ok, i think you can find more in console.txt in one of the doom directories. @Rick, the $99 subscription fee i think your thinking of is for "click n' run warehouse" on lindows, but why pay for that, its basically just apt-get with lindows own GUI and coming from Lindows servers. use apt get, and download synaptic like i said above... no need to pay. Lindows wants you to sign up to be able to download things like pacman and doom, they know people want those files, but i downloaded them so fast and easy, just by doing apt-get install pacman you get packman, who needs to pay $99 its daft. there loads of games on linux, but ill be keeping my windows for my main games playing, i cant live without battlefield 1942 etc
