  1. Indeed. But they don't keep old tech as long as everyone else anyway so a broken drive wouldn't matter so much
  2. Nothing wrong with Pentium 4's, as you can see I still have one in the second PC in my sig. Great you found a 6xx series, they are faster clock for clock compared to the 5xx series and also use less power. I tried Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and it worked fine. Should still get some good use out of it yet, after all no use upgrading to a new system if it ain't gonna be doing much anyway.
  3. Looks like a "me too" for me...too. FF 3.6, XP SP3. Have to logon every visit.
  4. Before I post my network can I ask, what is the best way to go around creating one of the nice looking diagrams people have here? Is there a simple program for this kind of thing or is it all done in paint I saw a post from Mr Snrub say he used Visio. That looks to be a little expensive for me So any good free programs? There are programs at school I could probably use too so just recommend me something and the school might have it.
  5. Nice I have Bioshock 1 and should finish that first but was thinking of waiting for it to come down on Steam or have a special some time. Might be waiting a few months for that but I got plenty of games ATM.
  6. Buying 2x1GB sticks of Kingston RAM for my Shuttle only cost $88 for both of them! Yes you can get cheap parts in Aus only in this one shop which is run by Asians, has no customer service (except warranty repairs) and gets big lines outside the stores all the time. In all the shops near where I live its a full $100 for some generic no brander of only 1GB with no installation or anything. Complete waste. I bought 2x512MB sticks a while ago off eBay but one didn't work and neither did the second one they sent me so they just refunded me half the cost of the RAM and I just got to keep the one that worked. Was a bit of mucking around though with me having to send the faulty sticks back twice.
  7. Just whatever you do with it, make sure its an easy task. Web browsing with nothing else open in the background, typing in Word (with preferably nothing else open) and basic stuff like that. You could use it for a kids PC, or do something funny to it like try a hardware mod. Before I whipped out the Dremel on my little baby Shuttle, I tried it on an old Pentium 1 computers fan grille. That computer also has a spray painted black silhouette of a desert eagle on it so yeah
  8. Wait till the next FF update and hopefully this is fixed. Didn't happen on a few other forums but they must not be using the rich text editor. It is also a little faster in benchmarks and seems to start up faster. I like the new tab opening system it has too where it will display the new tabs next to the website they were opened from instead of next to the last tab.
  9. Yep thats what happens. Does this happen to you too?
  10. I just installed Firefox 3.6 recently but now I cannot see the little blinking | symbol which shows me where the typing is coming out. It doesn't do this on any other forums, and if I post a reply then go quick edit, I can see the | thingy. Any ideas? Worked in FF 3.5 fine. Happens on another PC I just upgraded to 3.6 with too.
  11. Yeah IE8 is just newer, but remember people-what does IE7 have that IE8 doesn't? In the case of Windows XP vs 98 people could say 98 is faster and they don't have the money to upgrade. Well IE8 is free anyway and IS faster than IE7 so your only slowing yourself down using IE7 or IE6. For an example I was at an online access center recently and used IE7 for the first time in a while. It was slow and needed much more waiting time to get anywhere for some reason. Switched to Google Chrome...wow LOL!
  12. To add to game compatibility: MW2 works (bit slow loading times compared to XP) COD4 works Serious Sam HD TFE works Torchlight works Warcraft 3 works CSS works Thats all I've tested for now but won't be testing more until I put Win 7 on the main computer as I'm putting XP back on the LAN-BOX.
  13. Yeah I know it expensive hey. But the Coolermaster would be an excellent pick, I'm thinking of getting one to put in the top PC in my sig (I think they work for socket 775 too) and then sell the Freezer because I'm afraid of the plastic push pins breaking next time I remove it or even just move the PC around too much! Then in a year or so when I build a new PC (probably around the Core i5 CPU) I can just reuse the Coolermaster cooler and put the stock cooler back on the socket 775 PC.
  14. Both the Coolermaster and Noctua coolers mentioned are good, if on the cheap just get the Coolermaster. The Noctua is pretty darn big though and looks sweet when you see it for real.
  15. Why would I? IE7 and Office 97 can do all I need them to. I upgrade only when unavoidable. In the case of IE7 vs IE8, IE8 is a faster, more secure and better browser. It would be like me saying nah I don't need that free copy of Windows 7 when there is a free copy of Vista I use that does everything I need it too (assuming Vista and 7 came out free )
  16. More like dead for 2 minutes and 59 seconds. I did that once with an old Athlon XP 1700+ and I'd say it lasted about a second
  17. Haha I should have put the axe leaning up against it to showcase how tough these little things are. It gets bits cut out of it, carried around outside to take that photo, a way better graphics card and HDD than it should have, I reckon it would withstand an axe no probs Yeah its pretty old but I got the mobo, case, PSU, optical drive and CPU second hand so all those things cost me under $200. Then just got the RAM, HDD and graphics card as well as the main fan, one PSU fan and fan controller all new. Its pretty quiet too but I still have to replace the other PSU fan with a slightly quieter one and maybe put a Noctua fan in for a push/pull CPU heatsink configuration. Thanks for the tip on image hosting, I will check it out.
  18. Pics are finally up! Take a look! This is a standard front on shot of the shuttle. I put a DVD drive in and don't have the silver fan controller but ah well, looks OK. Side view. Was thinking of cutting out a window but can't be bothered now and I like the "Shuttle" written on the side. Rear view. You can see that I have cut the fan grille out and also mounted the fan to the outside of the case. It is powered on but you can't see the blue LEDs because of the light. Look at my other pics to see the LEDs! Not a massive amount of ports but its got firewire and I can put an ESATA bracket in the PCI slot next to the video card so I'm pretty set. Here's the video card, the HD 4670 with a passive Zalman cooler. You can't really see but I have cut part of the drive cage out to allow the third heatpipe to fit. The card has not exceeded 50C at idle all day which is slightly better than my old X1950pro did with a fan running at 35%. The PSU side. Nothing much to say, looks all neat and tidy enough. This is where the HDD, optical drive, fans, and fan controller all connect so it's pretty messy. Under the cables is where the fan would normally mount in front of the heatsink. You can also see part of the passive GPU cooler which takes up the PCI slot behind it. Let there be light! Sorry for blurry photo, it's hard with a disco ball! Better photo of the fan. Note the Champion System sticker. Got that at a mountain bike race but it goes well with PC's too Going cross-country. So yeah, other pics I did have somehow were lost off ImageShack or something, but anyway
  19. Just discovered a nice little game called Torchlight. Its a simple RPG (without huge amounts of quests and towns or anything) that is addicting and plays like Diablo. It has got a fair few items, and you get a pet that helps you fight/hold items etc. Anyway, it's fun!
  20. That's a good idea, have alt-tab or windows keys permanently disabled.
  21. Thanks for the info, will look into using this guide then.
  22. Hi there hardware people! I wanted to post the specs (and soon pictures) of my Shuttle SS59G LAN-BOX! It was built for, you guessed it, LAN parties and gaming/general use in the bedroom. Specs: CPU: Intel Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz (2MB L2 Cache model, runs OK but wanna upgrade to a 3.2 or 3.4GHz model for a small boost) Cooling: Shuttle I.C.E. 92mm with a Zalman ZM-F2BL 92mm blue LED fan. I'm going to get another one of these Zalman fans soon to screw onto the back of the case for a push/pull configuration so that none of the hot air goes back into the system once it has gone through the I.C.E. heatsink. I will also get a front 3.5inch fan controller than can take more than two fans and is silver to replace the black one that can only take two fans. Motherboard: Propriety Shuttle board with a socket 775/AGP/DDR SIS 661FX chipset RAM: Kingston Value RAM 2x512MB DDR 400Mhz Dual Channel (gonna upgrade to 2x1GB RAM in the next two weeks so don't worry bout my low amount of RAM at present!) Hard Drive: Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB (wanted lots of storage cause the shuttle case only holds two 3.5inch drives and one of them is taken up with my fan controller) Graphics Card: HIS ATI Radeon x1950PRO 256MB (did the job at first with the 1024x768 res it currently is on but its going with a bigger 19 or 20inch soon so I'm getting a Powercolor Radeon HD 4670 1GB with a Zalman VNF100 cooler...pretty much the fastest AGP card you can buy!) Sound Card: Integrated AC97 (would think about a cheap new sound card but really I wouldn't tell the difference much and the only PCI slot is going to be taken up by the Zalman GPU cooler soon) Optical Drive: Some cheapo DVD drive which is only used for OS and games installing then I take it out to save weight (yes, weight) and make the front panel look nicer Case: Shuttle "G" chassis Power Supply: Shuttle PC40 250W with two Sythe Mini-Kaze Ultra 40mm fans (these little 1U power supplies are very tough little things and a 250W model can run a modern system like the other, more powerful, PC in my sig fine!) Monitor: LOL...17inch CRT monitor made by IBM about 10 years ago... Gonna upgrade to an LCD like my main system soon! Keyboard/Mouse: Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600/Basic Logitech mouse (being replaced with a Logitech G5 along with the other upgrades) Speakers: Hey, I don't need speakers. I have some headphones I got for free! Operating System: Windows XP Pro SP3 heavily nLited. Might consider Windows 7 some time in 2010, wouldn't be too bad at all with the DX10 GPU and the 2GB RAM when I get them. Pictures will be up in about two weeks when I get the new RAM/GPU/GPU cooler/extra CPU fan/mouse! Sorry if this has speeeeling mistakes in it, it is 11.45PM right now on the 31st of December. Happy New Year! EDIT: I cut the rear fan grille out today with my trusty dremel and temps dropped by a few degrees. It doesn't look clean, but when I get the other fan screwed to the back you won't be able to see the sharp edges of the cut. EDIT2: I have got the new RAM in, but the GPU cooler is still on the way. Have mounted a fan on the outside of the case and also got the G5. I did try using the GPU just without the case on so it fit but for some reason the latest drivers did not install at all and the drivers on the disk caused a loop of reboots. So I'm going to stick with the x1950 until I get the GPU cooler to make it go in the shuttle permanently, then I will reformat and start over.
  23. Just wondering, what did you update in it?
  24. Man this is just great! Definitely using this guide to create my next XP install. But is there a 32-bit version of this guide anywhere at all? That would be more popular...
  25. LOL either is president of the USA but you can become one. You can become a hacker too. Even just starting out you are a hacker, but there are different levels of hacking knowledge you can gain. Like someone who only just started racing mountain bikes a few weeks ago could say they race and are a racer instead of a casual rider. You have to do certain things to become some titles, but I wouldn't say becoming a hacker needs you to do any minimal level of something. What cluberti said was pretty good.
