  1. How bout not upgrading??? I really see no need to upgrade at all as your current PC is as powerful as most new i7 920 builds, except for maybe the graphics card which could be upgraded depending upon what you use it for. Any more upgrades would probably be for bragging rights only ATM.
  2. Correct - I didn't think I needed to quantify again, as I'm assuming our OP isn't an id*** and can figure that out for himself since it's already been mentioned once . However you said I was correct in saying an 8800GTS is better than a 9600GT and I only wanted to clarify you meant a G92 cored 8800GTS, which you didn't say so that would kinda confuse bonestonne as he did think an older G80 cored card was faster than a 9600GT
  3. No, no, no, I said a ***G92*** version of an 8800GTS is definitely better than a 9600GT, not just any 8800GTS (G80) Yes but like I said, an older 8800GTS 640 would be hardly any difference at all to a 9600GT (actually a 9600GT would be a slight tad faster), and so I would probably rather a 9600GT and unless you are talking in terms of a G92 512MB 8800GTS (not the older 640MB 8800GTS) then you should rather your 9600GT too!!! So hopefully you guys understand me now Basically: The 8800GTS with the G80 chip isn't as good as the 9600GT (by a little) The 8800GTS with the G92 chip is better than the 9600GT (by a decent little bit...not sure how much better exactly) Oh yeah and the 9600GT uses less power and creates less heat than a G80 8800GTS...
  4. Actually I think you would find no difference between an 8800GTS 640 and a 9600GT 512. You would however see a difference if you meant an 8800GTS 512 G92 as this is definitely faster than a 9600GT as it is more of a 9800GTX. Just a little correction
  5. That is not too bad at all!!! The water block does look pretty ghetto and so does the reservoir but you have effectivly got six 120mm fans cooling the CPU so it would run good as Only thing is, it would be very hard to take that PC around with you so I hope you don't go to LAN parties with it
  6. I don't know if anyone else got banned but a bunch of people were kicked from the server
  7. Well got banned from some servers on CSS, not sure why yet. May have something to do with the crybaby admins at the time Oops edited wrong post
  8. Yeah those are good temps. Mine is around 33C at idle and can get well over 40C and even up to 50C at load. Still good temps.
  9. Any non-i7/i5 CPU will work with that RAM. The high end quad core CPUs from Intel have a 1600MHz FSB but it is quad pumped so is really just 400MHz which is the same as your 800MHz (really 400MHz, cause its double data rate) RAM is. I have a 1066MHz FSB (really 266MHz) with 800MHz RAM (really 400MHz) but the RAM still runs at its normal speed and does not drop down or anything. Hope you can understand this LOL.
  10. Just as an FYI, the Q9650, Q9550, Q9450, QX9775, QX9770, QX9650 all have 12MB of cache. But have 4 cores so only really have 3MB per core like the E8xxx series when all core are being used.
  11. Just thought I might also add...that is expensive! I built an entire new PC for someone for just $50 and it took me about 1-2 hours (including unpacking parts, flashing/tweaking BIOS, small overclocking and cable routing). I know thats a very cheap amount to pay and I will be charging closer to $100 next time I build an entire system from scratch (also including recommending/ordering parts and installing the OS). Just shows how much some people out there are getting ripped off. Sorry for being a little off-topic there
  12. I would like to eventually get into the IT industry when I 'grow up' and of course, like with any job I want to do, it has much negative criticism from my Dad (who knows nothing at all about computers-I taught him how to use word, browse the net etc). For some reason, unless I am a doctor or something like that, I will be stuck on $20 per hour for the rest of my life. I am now wondering how much money I would really be earning (especially later on) and the advantages and pros of working in the IT field. I am thinking along the lines of website design, hardware engineer, system/network admin, general PC technician etc. Also, what sorts of qualifications would I need (just to confirm what I already think, and to tell Dad you don't need to get outstanding results for every subject to get a job in the IT field-you need more of a desire to learn about ICT and gain experience in the field)?
  13. For all those people that are going to hang onto Vista, I would ask "what does Vista have that 7 doesn't have?". And 7 has loads of new feature as well as faster speed (especially boot-up and install time) and that is using the RC version! The full retail version (or SP1 when that comes out) will be even better
  14. Hey, has anyone tested many games on Win 7??? It would be good to see if it maintained exact compatibility with games that ran on Vista and hopefully even better than that. I have seen some pretty old games run good on Win 7, but wanted to hear some other people's experiences.
  15. In IDE mode, the transfer rate is limited to IDE-speed If you want your thing to go faster, you should check your BIOS for the AHCI option and enable it. There is a sticky here that will help you jump to AHCI from IDE mode without reinstalling your whole OS. Good luck! Yeah I thought that could help a bit. And increase general HDD performance on my internal drive too. OK I will do that then see what happens. Where exactly is the sticky? I can only find a sticky on how to integrate SATA drivers using nLite... EDIT: I found it. EDIT 2:Its only for ICH9 southbridges! The instructions do not go with the ICH10 drivers. Any help??? EDIT 3: Found a guide on the net and enabled AHCI mode. Worked OK. Now I will test out the external HDD and see if its faster!
  16. I have the latest chipset drivers (no SATA driver though-IDE mode!) and am using Windows XP Pro SP3. I might try to install the SATA drivers very soon then. And if that doesn't help, then I will swap the cables over.
  17. Hello everyone, I am having difficulty understanding the speed of my external hard drive. I have a 3.5" Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB (with SD1A firmware!) in a Vantec NexStar CX (eSATA/USB) external enclosure. Now when I copied over a folder with around 60 or so 800MB video files from my PC (in sig) over eSATA it took around 100mins! Over USB it only took me around 30mins! I do not know why the eSATA is being so slow I am using the supplied eSATA bracket and cable which came with the enclosure. My internal drive is going fine, and USB transfers are nice and fast. Any help on why eSATA is going so slow for me would be greatly appreciated!
  18. Exactly. nLite does the SP3 slipstream, then it is a good to go install and SP3 should cause no troubles at all.
  19. SP3 does nothing for performance like Vista SP1 did, but when slip streamed into a SP2 disk, means you don't need a huge amount of updates if you reinstall windows! Also, my slip streamed install of XP has so far cause absolutely no problems with anything! Office 2007 Pro works fine, as do the collection of over 100 games I own and numerous standard programs. And I know it is more secure so thats the main reason SP3 came out.
  20. Either you only use you PC for email...or you only use your PC for email
  21. The OPs list was used for a guide, so I probably missed some stuff. Here goes: 1. Firstly I have Windows XP Pro SP3 which has been moderately nLited. 2. I have all of the latest MS updates, and ALL of my programs, games, etc are up to date as well as hardware drivers. 3. Many services have been either removed with nLite, disabled, or set to manual. 4. Lots of MS stuff disabled/removed. Remote desktop, remote assistance, remote registry, IE, telnet, net meeting, messenger, windows update (I use AutoPatcher), other stuff disabled using Autoruns, other stuff I can't think of. 5. Lots of network features I don't need removed with nLite (TCP/IP, NetBIOS and others I can't remember). 6. Not that important, but I basically empty the recycle bin as soon as I delete something. 7. Windows firewall+semi-effective firewall in modem, AVG 8.5 (which has been stripped down a little bit), Spybot S&D (which has immunized my system every update). 8. Registry tweaks which were done by nLite and AutoPatcher. Not sure of all the security ones but there were a few. 9. Using the latest version of Firefox at all times as my browser (as IE was removed with nLite). There's my list. Like I said, there is probably more, but that was what I could think of using the OPs first list and a few other things. I do not know everything that was removed with nLite as I do not have the preset anymore or the install disk that was originally used. Anyway, I reckon I am pretty secure (well a hell of a lot more secure than the average user anyway ).
  22. Sorry, I do not think anyone can understand this! Maybe use a language translator such as Google Translate.
  23. You have seen nothing yet! How about warranty stickers on top of the CPU and the cooler applied on top of them? *caug* - VIVA Mexico - *caug* LOL again! I have seen one with a sticker on the outside plastic bit of the 478 socket, and part of the sticker was in between the cooler and CPU. Only about 0.5CM of sticker was in between though.
  24. LOL. Yeah I remember that. I have seen many Pentium 4's with absolute crap thermal grease, which is too think and/or too dry.
  25. Good job If anything goes wrong later on, do tell us as I have just installed a 500GB 7200.11 drive with SD1A firmware into an external enclosure so I am hoping it will live for longer than a few days like it did with the SD15 firmware. If I know of others that have SD1A drives dying then I will know to be careful with what I put on it.
