  1. that pic is pretty cool, my first pc back in '95 was a gateway dimension w/ a 5gb hdd, a cd-rom drive, floppy drive, 2mb vram and 64mb of ram. 5 years later i couldnt stand it anymore and built my own at that time my parents were still using that computer up until it died in about 2001 or so
  2. that would be pretty stupid if the dropped the "windows" name. i could care less about windows 7 right now because half of the stuff they talk about most likely wont be in there. remember all the hype about the new filesystem that was supposed to be in vista?
  3. i'm not.. that's how i used to think until i actually installed vista. it is my main OS now and i definatly like it over xp. i liked vista alot when it first came out but couldnt stand that alot of my devices werent supported. after a long fight with myself i went back to XP. also vista created bad sectors on my HDD now since SP1 is out and i have a new 500gb hdd i might install it again just for the heck of it
  4. agreed, i dont like it that much compared to SE/Pro
  5. you took the words right out of my mouth i dont need all the advanced stuff, actually i hate it when vmware installs all of those services and virtual network connections. all i want to see is if my stuff installed correctly and go from there! i keep on forgetting to buy DVD-RWs for the final product, i gotta remember to buy them.
  6. i just got one for $76 total, w/o shipping i believe it was a few bucks less then my original one. looks like im back in business, that is until i screw this one up
  7. i had auction sniper set up with a max bid of $75, so effectively it was $1 he probably had his set at $100 or so. it was at $41 before my bid went in.
  8. thats what im doing now. i almost had an Ultra-D with an amd 64 3000 and a zalman heatsink but i lost the auction by $1!
  9. crap. of course now when i need to buy a new board (i want the same one i had) theyre ~$115-$130, when I bought mine off of ebay for $65 brand new :-/
  10. haha, thats the next thing i was thinking, how the heck would i get this thing back on??
  11. edit: my father and I were just talking about this and maybe i wasnt too clear in my first post, is there any way to remove the top portion of the socket (the sliding portion) to see if anything is damaged under that? i figured thats how it would end what sucks now is when the i bought the board off of ebay it was $65 now everywhere i look theyre atleast $115, although i did see 2 used boards on ebay for around $4 with around 3 days left, guaranteed that will sky rocket.
  12. It all started out with something easy in mind: swap out my x2 4200 for my x2 3800 to see if it was alright before i sold it. I saw that my heatsink was covered in dust so I took it apart and cleaned it, lo and behold i put the tensioner on backwards and when i screwed the heatsink back onto the motherboard it applied too much force and I believe it destroyed the socket. I tried the motherboard with both CPUs and got the same error tone (also the error lights on the board said there was something wrong with the CPU) I remembered that after the initial time I installed the heatsink (with the tensioner on backwards) it didnt work. so I unscrewed the heatsink (while leaving it sit on the CPU) and turned it on it beeped and seemed like everything was alright. I proceeded to swap the direction of the tensioner and screw the heatsink on lightly and go from there. I got the same beeps as I did the first time. I removed the x2 3800 and noticed a click when I lifted the arm for the socket, I tested the fluency of the arm and everything with no CPU in there and it seemed fine. I placed the x2 4200 in there and lowered the arm and didnt hear a click but it felt a little stiff. So in short I've tried everything from clearing the CMOS various different ways to swapping out processors. Is there any way to remove the socket and see if anything is damaged? If not it looks like I'm going to have to shell out more money for another motherboard BTW, The Board is A DFI Lan Party UT NF4 Ultra-D.
  13. After using vista i liked the idea of redirecting a users "My Docs/Pics/Music" folders to another place instead of inside the users folder. I'm the only user on my computer and I like to have all my folders for that stuff on my D drive. Are there any hacks for this?
  14. ive had similar problems with recovery programs. stuff started to randomly disappear on my hdd so i ran a recovery program and after it was finished i was left with those helpful names also, and none of the files worked. pictures taken with a camera turned into clipart pics, exes and rars were useless/corrupted, etc... then later i was searching the directories of the HDDs (three at that time) and noticed that all of my stuff had been fully recovered and in working order but in a completely different location then where i told it to recover to! (ex. damaged drive was d, i told it to recover to c and the files ended up on e) figure that one out
  15. I almost always use Diskeeper, i tried perfectdisk a few years ago and didnt really like how simple it was, so i went back to diskeeper. about a month ago a member at another board said i should try the new perfect disk instead of DK2007 ProPremier, i tried it for about a month and didnt really notice any difference. Im back to using diskeeper
  16. i use my own account and add myself to the admin group, then disable the admin account.

  18. very true, i retract what i previously said about the re-indexing. it seems it is pretty fast compared to the initial backup. even though i bumped my backup set down to 21gb it says its only going to take about 3 days, compared to what would most likely be about 2-3 weeks with the initial backup. if your are really paranoid about someone looking at your backups you can use your own encryption key with mozy, none of my stuff is that important so i just use their key. maybe i should change it just for the hell of it idk... i think blu-ray will be really nice to backup data on, a 50gb disc thats enclosed in a case like a floppy 12 of those and theres your 600gb
  19. im trying an online backup solution and so far so good. ive given up with local backups because half the time they dont work when you really need them too. ive had HDDs crash when ive had stuff backed up on them or i would delete the partition by accident. with cds/dvds they would get scratched over time or it would just be a bad burn/disc and they wouldnt let me copy anything off of them (the most recent example was last night when i tried to transfer a lot of files i had downloaded previously and burnt to dvds, when i went to transfer them to my new 500gb hdd i kept getting CRC errors) the only problem with online backup is it takes awhile if you have alot of stuff to backup, that is unless you have a fast upload speed. i only have a max of 40kB/sec (read 40 kilobytes/sec not bits) so i dropped it down to 30 to allow room for over head. it took me about a month to backup ~50gb, the crappy thing is you pretty much have to reupload everything if you reinstall windows, the company (mozy) says it doesnt really do that it just checks their servers for the files that you previously backed up, but i think thats BS since it takes just as long and for it to work after you reinstall windows you have to login to your account and pretty much delete your computer from there and then re-add it immediately. its a slight PITA but i think its kind of worth it for unlimited storage space for only $5/month per computer
  20. Try burning or doing an on-the-fly CD/DVD copy to two drives on the same IDE cable and then make that statement again. The OP stated he wants to get rid of his IDE cables so I'm sure that was the main reason for the inquiry. exactly, i could really care less if its 133mb/sec or 3gb/sec i dont use the drives that much for that to matter. i just want to get rid of the IDE cables since theyre bulky and are a PITA compared to SATA cables.
  21. the first dvd burner i bought was a plextor, i read all around that it was a great drive blah blah blah, i went to go used it an IMO it sucked. so about 6 months later i bought a NEC and i still use it to this day. the plextor layed unsed in my pc until my dads drive failed and i gave him my plextor.
  22. after looking on newegg i think im probably going to go with this one thanks anyway
  23. I want to get a sata dvd burner and ditch IDE cables once and for all. anyone have any recommendations?
