  1. The title says it really. (I'm talking XPSP2) Does anyone know a way to stop an application displaying in the notification area(aka system tray) whilst still allowing the application to do its stuff? The app I want to do this with is this one; Visual Tool Tip It's a very nice little app that gives Vista style tool tips in XP.
  2. Hav'nt played Q3 in a while, but I used to get this issue regular where settings didn't "stick". If the above suggestion doesn't work then; 1. Open "q3config.cfg" in your text editor (Notepad or such NOT Word) 2. Scroll down till you see bind MWHEELDOWN "weapnext" bind MWHEELUP "weapprev" make sure it's as you want. 3. Save the file and close editor. 4. set the attributes on the file to "Read only"
  3. Uncle Bill is on record as saying that the widespread piracy of Windows 3.1 was responsible for the huge customer base that MS have had since the early '90s.
  4. Thanks jondercik. For anyone interested - The DOS command that my old grey cells were refusing to recall was: JOIN d: [d:path] JOIN d: [/D] Purpose: Allows access to the directory structure and files of a drive through a directory on a different drive. (In DOS Version 6, this program is stored on the DOS supplemental disk.) After joining a drive to a directory, the files stored on the joined drives can be accessed as if they were on the specified directory. Anybody know of a 3rd party way to do this? ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ I guess I should have searched more B4 asking - The answer is to convert the disks to dynamic disks and create a spanned volume. MS links for this; Convert to dynamic Spanned volumes
  5. In the days of DOS and FAT32/16 it was possible to make one drive appear as a diectory of another - effectively making multiple drives appear as one (bigger) drive. The command escapes me now (a senior moment) and I was wondering if such a thing is possible under XP.
  6. What you need is here Seven Years Later Ed Oh boy it was soo far away - 2 pages back geez.
  7. I don't know if what you want to do is possible via a RegTweak but it is certainly possible to display UserName (and a lot more besides) using this little gem from systernals- BgInfo
  8. Thanks - my bad. All these UA's over several years and I never realised that the desktop theme set the cursor theme as well - LOL
  9. I am trying to get my cursor pack (Gant 3 Ocean) to be installed and set as default as part of the UA install. I am verymuch against using "extras" such as "CursorXP" or "StyleDooDaa" so trying to do it the hard way. So far I have managed; A set of *.cur and *.ani files to meet my needs, Installation via an *.inf file so that my pack places the cursors in the correct folder and shows the scheme in the Cusor dialog for selection. However, once installed I still have to go to "Pointer setings" and select my scheme. Anyone know how to do this silently?
  10. I have just found (on a different forum) links to the Feb release direct from MS. It appears that they left the back door open. My question is - would it be out of order to give either a link to the forum post or the DL's? Feel free to delete this post if it is out of order.
  11. If you think that's bad - the last course I had to sit was on "Relativistic Quantum Mechanics" and there were no set texts because (to quote the Prof) "No-ones written one yet, I'm just doing it now!".
  12. I have had similar errors on install - every time they have turned out to be dodgy memory.
  13. I disagree. I often install (modified) XP Pro/Home on low spec machines. The secret is to be realistic about what you expect them to achieve and choose you software carefully. Granted, a 433 will never run the latest games or apps under XP - but then, it was never going to anyway. An example: A Crapard Bell 466 system was recently brought back into service to be used as a "do-it-yourself" jukebox/media centre. The OS (XP Pro) was heavily N-Lited to remove just about everything that was not needed for the few apps required. It has 6x40 Gb drives (utilising a controller card from an old 486) for storage and 256Mb RAM. It lives in a kitchen cupboard with only the monitor/mouse on view - looking like a TV. I may in fact add a TV card at a later date. It now happily boots XP in around 20 secs, runs with a custom (Vista style) theme and runs - Musicmatch Jukebox - v5 as the later versions are resource hogs ( + around 2000 albums of MP3s) Power DVD for Films/Music Vids etc Mame32 arcade emulator (+ 300 ROMS) Windows Games (Freecell, Solitaire etc) 3 or 4 Real Arcade games (Zuma, Chuzzle etc) This PC will even run Musicmatch in the background whilst playing games in Mame. I have often used this same approach to prepare machines as game servers or similar for friends.
  14. In the past I have used a "Printer Migration" tool (from MS) to backup and restore printer settings. I cannot find my copy ATM but here is a link to the download (I'm almost certain that I used this version) Print Migrator
  15. By PDF I guess you mean the OfficeShrink "How to" (Prolly Astalavista's version?). If my guess is correct then I can state (for sure) that the prblem is your end. You MUST use shrink on EXACTLY the same system that the final install will be used on AND it MUST be done BEFORE ANY Office components are installed on that system. IE the machine must be a "clean" system. Uninstalls don't count - files and settings get left behind and will screw your install. If you are ABSOLUTELY sure that you have followed the build procedure correctly with no shortcuts then the other possibility is the timing of your install. By this I mean @T12, RunOnce etc - & before/after .Net install. This matters but is too complex for this post. There was a lot of discussion in the OfficeShrink Thread. Hope you get it sorted. Keep trying it does work.
  16. That's exactly what Office Shrink does. It examines your system and packages ONLY the components that are needed to complete an install that YOU have defined (using an MST file). It works perfectly (if you folow the instructions carefully) and is VERY efficient (I have an OfficeXP package here that includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Frontpage and Outlook at only 72Mb on my Unattended CD - 7-Zip installer).
  17. Excellent, recieving much faster service. Thanks.
  18. Hey Mods, Does this mean that we can have the Xplode Forum back? (Pretty Please)
  19. I'm sorry if a thank-you thread already exists but I couldn't see one - but it deserves a second one anyway. A big thank You to all involved in the new look UA site - especially (I believe) Alanoll. I've been off-line for a few days (seasonal hangover) and only just saw Xper's announcement.
  20. Here's hoping that someone can stop me going insane! I'm just starting to learn this app' using on-line tutes. But I'm finding this "feature" very frustrating. Every so often a stray mouse click will cause all of my project/sequence/monitor windows to disappear. This leaves only the Toolbar/Info/History windows visible. My project still seems to be open but I can't find any way to get back to it without closing the app' and restarting (sometimes, even then, when I re-open my project it opens without the windows!). Please, where am I going wrong and how do I fix it? I feel like a complete loser NooB!
  21. Your file looks ok at a quick glance - other than; It references your Adobe file on the "%systemdrive%" which is the drive where Windows is installed (usually C:) but you say it is the first app installed "from the CD" - where is it installing FROM? If C: then it needs to be copied over from the $OEM dir to C:\install, if you are not using this method (ie installing direct from CD) then your file needs someway to "find" the CD drive. Incidently, if you go HERE RyanVM has prepared (among many other great things) totally switchless MSI packages of Adobe Reader 6 & 7.
  22. Don't worry too much (at all) about your cleanup.cmd for the time being. It is only a simple batch file that you use as the very last thing to tidy up redundant files, shortcuts etc. Don't even use it until you have built and double tested EVERYTHING else and are sure that everything is working. BTW - Far the best tutorial/Guide to folow is MSFN Guide; MSFN Unattended Guide
  23. I never got it to work the way you are trying - the files seem to be copied over at a time when the user profiles do not exist, so you get the type of errors you describe. However, the way I eventually settled on turned out much slicker; 1. For actual files and documents that you want to add to user folders. RAR them all up into a self extracting *.exe with either %USERPROFILE% or %AllUsersProfile% in the extraction path. Then extract them AFTER your user has been created and logged on. (I use this method for IE Favourites and items to go into "My Documents". 2. For links in the Start Menu, you can either creat them and pack up as above or use a *.cmd/bat file in combination with shortcut.exe (attached). shortcut /F:filename /A:C|E|Q [/T:target] [/P:parameters] [/W:working [/R:runstyle] [/I:icon,index] [/H:hotkey] [/D:description] Basically, make sure that shortcut.exe is in your path (Use $OEM$ folders) then in your batch file; /f:"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\My App.lnk" /a:q Shortcut.exe
  24. Try this guide; Bootable Ghost CD to deploy images - GUIDE
  25. I used to get something similar to this on one of my old machines. It turned out to be a conflict due to IRQ assignments. Use the SystemInfo tool to check for "Shared resources" and "Hardware Conflicts". If your soundcard is on the same resources as something quite demanding (Your graphics card for example) it could be the cause. If so use the Device Manager to try to force one of them to adopt different settings.
