RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0
johnhc replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
I am currently running XP x64, have installed WAIK (W7) and RT Seven Lite - no problems. When I open RT 7 Lite, I see the loading page and a window asking me to DL WAIK - does not think I have it installed. This stays forever if I let it. If I click close on the WAIK window then answer No to the prompt about really ending RT 7 Lite, the WAIK window goes away and RT 7 Lite comes up and looks OK. I do not currently have a copy of W7, so I cannot determine if I can really use RT 7 Lite. Earlier, I posted and asked if I could XP x64 for running RT 7 Lite. XP x64 is based on Windows 2003 and shares the same version number (5.2.3790). Based on bensam56's post on the RT forum, I did an install on the two wimmount.inf files and do have a wimmount.sys in my System32 driver folder. Will I be able to run RT 7 Lite under my XP x64? Thanks, John. -
Need help with win7 TimeZone and activation
johnhc replied to grabby's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
grabby, I have used WPI on XP and it runs fine in VMware Server VM. I assume you have used the W7 $OEM$ code found here. Enjoy, John. -
Can I downgrade an Laptop with Intel Core I3,I5or I7 to XP?
johnhc replied to sarzaminman's topic in nLite
sarzaminman, sorry, with so little information, we are going to be just guessing. Please attach your Last Session as requested in the bold RED letters above. Also, post a screen shot of the BSOD or at least the Stop code (07B? - probably bad text mode driver). Post a link to where you got the drivers. The real problem with installing XP on a current computer (probably with Vista) is finding drivers, as you have discovered. Enjoy, John. -
Kurt_Aust, thanks again for your work. One thing, I already had a 908-IE8-WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB976662-x64-ENU.exe in my Hotfix folder, so I ended up with two, one without the 908. Thanks, John. EDIT: What is the deal with 5eraph's Internet Explorer 8 AddOn? It is dated 2009-03_4. Is that last number just a version number?

Allubz, I would be really surprised if you really do not have shell32.dll. If you are searching your CD, then you need to search for shell32.dl*, since it will be compressed into SHELL32.DL_. I would strongly advise against DLing any system files. Get it or them from your original CD, and remember they will be compressed. Just expand them (I use 7-Zip) and put them into the System32 folder. You will also have one or both in your SysWoW64 folder. These are 32 bit versions. You may need both. Enjoy, John.
-
Thanks, Nethan. Perhaps it would be an interesting experiment to run under XP x64, as the failing one with hot fixes, but include only the set of hot fixes that are in the old one that worked. I notice that the old one was run under XP (32 bit). Enjoy, John.

unisev, I cannot see anything obvious in your Last Session (thanks for posting). I would not think this would be a video driver problem. Did you run nLite more than once against the same source? If after the reboot (changing the theme), if you set it again to Classic , does it stay or change again after reboot? Enjoy, John.
-
Allubz, I really don't see anything that is obvious to me. You may have to do some trial and error testing. I hope you are using a virtual system for testing. VirtualBox and VMware Server are free. I do see that you are running nLite under Vista (or W7) to create an ISO for XP. Sometimes this leads to a problems, especially if you include a Service Pack. You have a number of services disabled. An easy test is to enable and start them all to see if that helps. Another thought - if you open a folder containing images (your desired wall paper), have Thumbnails or Filmstrip selected and right click an image file, one of the options is 'Set as Desktop Background'. Do you have this option and can you then set your desired wallpaper? What do you mean when you say you cannot change your BG? Do you get an error (please post a screen shot), the option is missing and where? BTW, I did some searching for a good defrag program and found MyDefrag (free). It has done a great job on my machine reducing boot times. I use AutoLogon and do not even see the Logon screen. Like you I have an AMD CPU but a 965 BE. I am running stock and just ran a single copy of SuperPi for 2M digits and got about 50 seconds. Four copies (HyperPi) is about the same, maybe a little longer. Still curious what you see at the really aggressive clock. Please let us know what you learn on the background change. Enjoy, John.

Nethan, I am glad you have got at the problem. I am wondering why I do not see the OOBE. I would like to see the Last Session files for the older nLite run and the latest one that worked. Thanks, John.
-
Nethan, I think I have found the problem. There is a switch in winnt.sif: When "Yes", Instructs Setup to skip Windows Welcome. Windows Welcome is the XP term for OOBE. I am not sure how/when nLite sets this switch, but again I suspect it is under some Unattended Mode. I think if you edit winnt.sif after running nLite and change the "Yes" to a "No" for UnattendSwitch, you will be good to go. Please give it a try and let us know. Enjoy, John.EDIT:I have done some testing on my VM (VMware Server using XP x64 host and guest). So far I have not been able to get OOBE to show. I tried Fully Unattended and no AutoLogon and the UnattendSwitch="No" was set, but I saw no OOBE. I suspect your winnt.sif will show UnattendSwitch="No", so trying to set it to "No" has no meaning. I will do some more thinking, but right now the only option I can fathom is to not create any User Account, which I now do. Please give it try - assuming you do create User Account(s). I am out of time tonight but may get a chance to try it tomorrow. Good luck, John.

Nethan, no, I just screwed up! I realized at supper that I have a cranial-rectal inversion and said just the opposite of what I already knew. Right now, the only thing I can think of to try is a different Unattended Mode. Please read the help text for it and see if you can decide if one mode would more likely work for you. I would like to see the Last Session for the older run that worked. Attach that if you have it and I'll see if I can see anything. Sorry about my screw up. Enjoy, John.
-
Nethan, I don't really think it is an XP x64 problem. Do that test only if you have some spare time. I don't see your integrating SP3. Did you do this at another time? It is OK to run nLite to integrate SP3 (or manually integrate it with the /I switch), then run nLite against it. But, running nLite multiple times against the same source is a bad idea. I do not see any OOBE activity and I use AutoLogon. I suspect the AutoLogon is your problem. Try without it and let us know. Enjoy, John.
-
Allubz, good question. Please attach your Last Session.ini as requested above in bold RED letters and we will take a look. I am curious what kinds of SuperPi time you are seeing. Enjoy, John.
-
ricktendo64, the OP says AutoLogon is off, and the .ini file indicates it is not enabled. I am not familiar with use of OOBE. Does this make a difference? Nethan, I have the same OOBE set up as you do, but I do use AutoLogon. What does "But still, OOBE don't want be launched on the final CD." mean? I don't see anything that I attribute to OOBE. What do I need to do to launch OOBE? I see you are running nLite under XP x64 (or W2003). I don't know if this is a problem, but could you do a quick trial under XP (32 bit)? Enjoy, John.

HelliR, in my txtsetup.sif (XP x64, SP2), I have this: I would suggest you look at the same line in your original file - before running nLite and see what it says. In my case, the two files contain the identical code. Now, in your post you say "some of my Dell E4300" - italics are mine. This makes me inclined to think you are using nLite in a business environment which the license agreement you accepted when you installed nLite prohibits. If you are using nLite in anything but a personal way, then you need to find another way to deploy XP. Enjoy, John.

fx5171, I assume your Windows Key is back. Thanks for reporting how nLite implemented the tweak. Enjoy, John.

Moving user directories and restarting to safe mode
johnhc replied to cokesmoke's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
cokesmoke, for the UserProfile, see this article and the KB pointed to in it. The value for the Download Directory is in the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer. These are for older versions of Windows, so don't know if they apply to W7 - suspect the IE one does. For the reboot into Safe Mode, I think you need to modify the boot.ini file. Open msconfig and look at the BOOT.INI tab and /SAFEBOOT check box. I would suggest you experiment (with a virtual machine, if possible) and see what happens when you check the box - suspect it changes the boot.ini file. Found all of this via Google. Enjoy, John. -
fx5171 , if you don't find the Scancode Map value, then see if you have this one and code: Please let us know how nLite does it. Enjoy, John.

Need help with win7 TimeZone and activation
johnhc replied to grabby's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
grabby, I get lots of hits here on slmgr, including this: So, perhaps you need the cscript part. I also find "SkipAutoActivation" in the unattend.chm. Perhaps that means you don't need to activate, but do need to skip it if you don't want it done automatically. The several threads I found via search of slmgr indicates that some are using it to activate. Therefore, I am confused on this issue. Enjoy, John. -
Need help with win7 TimeZone and activation
johnhc replied to grabby's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
grabby, according to unattend.chm, the Eastern time zone is "Eastern Standard Time", without the quotes and is defined as (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US and Canada). Sorry, can't help with the activation question. Enjoy, John. -
torchlord, several problems here. First you are running nLite under Vista (or W7) to create an ISO for XP. This is not going to work if a Service Pack is integrated. You are also including updates for IE8 and WMP11 and you have included neither. Can you run under XP? Enjoy, John.
-
xper, thanks for the guide. It will be a great help to all. Enjoy, John.
-
If this is really all you did, then you should be OK. I run XP x64 and follow Kurt_Aust's guide. He does all the work and I do DL all the updates - better control as Sp0iLedBrAt says. It seems you are OK also on the IE7/IE8 possible problem. I am also with Sp0iLedBrAt in suggesting that you try running a virtual system using your nLite ISO. VMware Server, VirtualPC and VirtualBox are all free. I would suggest you run your current ISO and make sure it behaves the same and then start with a fresh source and repeat your steps and see if you have problems. You can then build ISOs with various things removed to nail down the problem. Enjoy, John.
