Wireless router & desktop PC issues
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to Macstorm's topic in Networks and the Internet
yeah if your link light on the router doesnt come on that almost ALWAYS means either a cable , the nic, or the port on the switch is bad. the link light will light regardless of whether the machine has issues at the software level. -
win 2000 IS in the spotlight! XP is built off of it and Vista is built off of that and no one would argue that XP/Vista arent a target for virus/malware authors. More oten than not, when a major security hole is found in a Windows OS it has been there for ages. rarely is a major hole discovered that was introduced because of a security update! I don't know how I can explain this clearer! You know, nevermind. I cant believe im actually having to make a case for something that is accepted practice for 99.99% of the IT world. If you want to strip down and run naked right through a patch of rose bushes and expect to not get harmed, why the heck should i try to stop you?

You probably 'dont use' oobe BECAUSE your installation is being preactivated by the oembios.bin file. if you remove it, you will likely have to activate using oobe.

I think your approaching this problem from the wrong angle, you could probably try every explorer.exe that has ever existed and get 1 of 2 things. a) an explorer.exe crash b) the exact same behavior. almost every behavior in explorer.exe is governed by a registry setting. id look into some of the sorting flags here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=22555 id also check: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoSaveSettings" I still cant explain the behavior though, i remoted to my XP SP3 machine and tried to reproduce the effect your describing but my icons resize perfectly everytime.

Replacing broken "shift" key on Dell Inspiron 6000
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to buckdog05's topic in Hardware Hangout
probably have to replace the entire keyboard. I doubt youll find a single key for sale. http://www.isoretail.com/store/proddetail.php?prod=H5639 http://stores.channeladvisor.com/laptop-re...?itemid=5982408 i have never dealt with those merchants before. I just found them in a search. http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q...d&scoring=r but hinestly, ebay would be your best bet: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksi...-All-Categories -
the best practice is just to disable the accounts. my guest account is disabled during install and my admin account is disabled by a .bat file that is placed on the desktop during install. that way i can use the admin account, create an alternate local admin, join the domain, disable the admin account and reboot. leaving the admin account in place but disabled is helpful should i ever need to crack its password using a bootCD or use recovery console (which will accept the administrator password even if the account is disabled.)

not unless you want to go through WGA activation everytime you install.

this logic is flawed. the internet has changed a LOT since 9x was a hacker target. 9x stayed relatively secure for 3 reasons: 1. lack of always-on internet connections available at the time prevented machines from being infected remotely 2. number of PC with an always-on internet connection made running botnets much harder and far less effective 3. 9x's complete lack of remote access technologies (this is the only thing that keeps 9x looking secure these days) older does not equal safer. a 2000 machine with no SPs is even less secure than XP with no SPs (hell even an unpatched 9x box is prolly safer just because of its lack of network services enabled by default.) also, if an application is written properly, the type of the hardware should mean anything. only the spec of the hardware (CPU speed, Amount of RAM etc)

ive used XP since launch and if never seen icons tile themselves outside the window unless there was a resolution change or icon size was ridiculously large with icon spacing set low. not if you mean the columns in detail and list views are not sized the way you want, open a folder, size it the way you want, then Tools->Folder Options->View tab->Apply to folders (verbiage may be slightly different -in front of Vista at the moment) alternatly you could use something like Directory Opus if you just want to replace explorer.exe

they are used for activating OEM installations more details here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=71016

in your configuration, if you replaced either the wired router or the hub (or both) with a wireless router, you would get the same functionality as you currently have. a wireless router is just a router that also has wireless. it shouldnt change your setup.

its almost 6 year old paranoia about Microsoft world domination plans. tons of tinfoil hat wearing nobodys claimed MS would be able to "control" your computer. BTW the article never mentioned Vista at all. OP just made that part up.

this video is inaccurate for several reasons: The enterprise wouldnt be running 98. a 365 year old OS? even our die hard 98ers on this forum wouldn't try that even if Starfleet's IT policies would allow it. When a PC BSODs, the system is halted. I highly doubt the screen would accept input and i know it wouldn't be able to play audio. Data would have smashed that console to bits if he was truly that frustrated. Data could recode a superior OS from scratch in his head faster than Picard could say "Make it so" Oh wait. Im just supposed to chuckle and move on? /chuckle BTW, this video is superior in every way:

Trojan/backdoor tool targetting OS X
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to Dude111's topic in Other Operating Systems
they never were. they just werent a large enough target for the hacker community to care. -

ok this is just my opinion but... Shes 10. She gets her privacy in 8 years. Until then a good parent is mindful of their child's activities. as I stated its my opinion thats a filtering program but thats not very discreet but id use this: http://www1.k9webprotection.com/ ive also used a piece of software in the past called desktop detective (not free) that will allow you to see a live screenshot, time delay screnshots via email, traffic logging, and a bunch more i cant remember. but it might be a little overkill for this situation.

that should NEVER happen. not the "beep beep beep" part, the "when theres no heat sink" part. you should NEVER boot a PC without a heatsink attached. depending on CPU make/model, you can fry a good CPU in a matter of seconds.
-
congrats. since you will probably never see any newer drivers for Xp for your machine, you might want to pickup something like http://www.drivermax.com/ to update your drivers or try different versions if you have any problems

redistributing icons from office would be against the EULA. but luckly, there are some good 3rd party icons out there: http://trazo.deviantart.com/art/Outlook-2007-icons-40255275 http://trazo.deviantart.com/art/Excel-2007-icons-36476368 http://trazo.deviantart.com/art/Word-2007-icons-36415172 http://trazo.deviantart.com/art/OneNote-2007-icons-39868833 http://trazo.deviantart.com/art/PowerPoint...-icons-36639503

be nice people. not everyone has a PC budget. some people have to squeeze the last drop of life from their electronics before upgrading. as for the comment about whether a beta can be trusted, id vote yes. worst case scenario it dies during a BIOS flash or fails to boot. but even then: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Mother...?ProductID=1507 if yours has the "optional" dual bios, the mobo isnt a complete loss and can be recovered from a failed update.

OK first thing, Im calling BS on whoever told you that. unless your running some VERY ancient software on your XP systems, itll run fine on Vista. secondly, show of hands, how many people have talked to a Frys employee that you thought was competent? <crickets> short version is he lied to you. I'm not saying it wont run XP, I'm just saying he didnt have a clue so he lied and told you what you wanted to hear. With that out of the way, you need to figure out what type of video card the machine has. HPs website says the onboard video is an Intel G33 http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Des...al〈=eng if that doesnt work this is a tutorial that will let everyone here see what hardware you actually have so we can find the drivers easier. http://www.msfn.org/board/compiled-FAQ-and...974#entry785974

that is a "pretty pattern" on your desktop Idontwantspam. I know this isnt a Poll, but if it was, i would definitely vote for that wallpaper. http://i33.tinypic.com/258vwaw.png http://i35.tinypic.com/30089pl.png P.S. i moved you post into this thread x-Shadow-x (its not October anymore )
