  1. Hi all (mainly @ GM) Just a note to say that the hotfixes: WindowsXP-KB885523-x86-enu.exe [1,199,848 bytes] WindowsXP-KB885626-v2-x86-enu.exe [469,736 bytes] placed in the SVC-HF1 folder are installed slipstreamed as expected and worked fine for me on Windows XP Professional. Looks like I just missed out testing a hotfix that appeared after I'd already checked Windows Update earlier... Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB834707) [2.9MB] Sorry I would have done this one too given the chance... Regards, Nathan H.
  2. Hi all Just tryed a build with SP2...although I've install the Sun Java Env 2 (latest) I still get the following in WU: 816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM) If the Virtual Machine is the Java Virtual Machine (too many terms - I get confused hehe) then how is it possible not to install this without it complaining about it. The only other thing i have listed in the list is the GDI+ Detection Tool thingy. Has the process of the XPC (funny the abv as I'm using it on a XPC - Shuttle hehe) not slipstreamed something in the SP2 update? Could the SP2 update have been corrupt etc if the above hotfix (816093) is listed? I'll try rebuilding it again with a fresh copy of the SP2 update/service pack. [EDIT 12-10-04] Yep...something must have gone wrong in a previous build...WU is all happy with nothing regarding Virtual Machine / Java Machine / etc. Havent even installed Sun Java Env 2 yet hehe Was gonna delete this post but thought I'd leave it here instead incase anyone else gets: 816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM) , listed after they install XP SP2 from a XPCREATE build Regards, N.

    messenger 5

Have just downloaded and installed it. It seems to be msi style install wrapped in IExpress... Unpacking the file reveals three files... InstMsiW.exe - msiexec Messenger.msi - needs to explaination setup.exe - the IExpress wrapper (I think) Would that help the decision of where to put it? [EDIT 12-10-04:] Right well I've tried it in the X2M folder...not listed or installed after windows had finished installing etc. The Messenger folder in Program Files did contain the 4.7 folder so I wonder whether it was installed and windows decided to replace it with the 4.7 version... Just tried it manually using the /Q:U /R:N switches and they work Gonna try placing it in the POS folder as GM suggested and see what happens. [EDIT 12-10-04:] No luck at all here. Putting the file into the POS directory gives the result of a Messenger folder in Program Files but only a file called lvback.gif inside it. Although in Add/Remove Windows Components, it appears Windows Messenger is installed - it isnt Bit of a weird one....when I get a moment, I'll try putting it back in the X2M folder - maybe it was my bad build (see other post somewhere) that caused it problems. Regards, N.
  4. GM Cant blame you in the slightest It would hell if you had to test all the evaluation version's there were/are out there. People will just have to stick to the "real deal" and get the proper version of the OS they want. Its sad but true (as a lovely band once said hehe) Regards, Nathan PS Really looking forward to the next version...cant wait to try it
  5. Think you should work as a game bug-tester hehe
  6. Yep...the only thing that asked me was Norton Internet Security (easy enough to choose 'Allow' and 'always' really hehe)... Windows or my hardware firewall (in my router) didnt prevent it so should be much better and its a lovely proggy to use N.
  7. I've never seen a eval version of XP but if its anything like the Server 2003, it *must* have some differences in it to cause the "end of evaluation process". Wouldn't xpcreate in slipstreaming the hotfixes/service pack be replacing some of the very files in question and make it get very confused and not work? Only a little idea of thought of. Regards (my two cents) N.
  8. Anyone know the other options you can have in the silent install of QuickTime 6.5.x? My quicktimeinstaller.ini looks like this: Anyone know if there are anymore options and if there is a document or URL to these as I have to manually "get-rid" of the System Tray icon that appears? Many thanks (and I'm sure my QTPrefs section is wrong too) hehe N.
  9. Hi all @GM: Just wanted to mention that using wget over the opus downloader was a great choice - tried the wget tool a little while ago for my own scripting uses and its great. Thought I should mention that Norton Internet Security (firewall) did ask whether it should let it access the internet but when I allowed it, no problem at all. So many options in it - its crazy. I'm using the 1.9.1 version btw - worked great for me. Also, on the site, it mentioned about firewall issues, or was that in the html help file I downloaded - ahhh...its 4am - forgive me for not remembering. G'nite all N.
  10. Hi all Here is a weird one, and one I hope is very simple to fix... Built a new system - XP SP2 - and usual drivers to go along with it i.e. VIA 4-in-1 driver (think its the latest - not at home so cant check), ATI Catalyst 4.8 (I know, there's 4.9 out now lol) and so on. Just to repeat, a clean install was made (HD completely blank) The DVD/CD-RW combo drive I took out of the old machine and played DVD's fine so it came as quite a surprise to find that when I played a DVD back on this lovely fast new machine, the DVD playback was all garbage. Hard to describe but basically, its like watching the film in 8 colours with the screen cracked or run through a kaliderscope hehe This was in PowerDVD so tried the DVD in Media Player & RealPlayer and exactly the same thing happened!! The graphics card is a new Sapphire 9600 Atlantis 128MB AGP x8 card picked up for 50 pounds which was good enough for this machine (compared to the old machine running a ATI Radeon VE/7000 32MB dual display card). For reference: Motherboard is a MSI KT6 Delta FISR (with BIOS updated with the latest rev) HD is a Hitachi 7K250 80GB SATA (nice 'n' fast - pretty quiet too) Case is a Antec Performance II SX630 - Black - with the Antec 350W PSU included. RAM is the Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 333Mhz DDR x 1 (KVR333X64C25/512) CPU is a AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton 333FSB processor (boxed version w/HSF) Any ideas? I'm thinking about trying to uninstall the driver (again) and install the new latest one -- I say 'again' as I installed the 4.8 package with ATI's Control Center in it, stupidly without having the DotNet Framework installed as required *doh* Of course, a few errors appeared so I promptly uninstalled the driver package (in fact, all ATI software). Then installed the 4.8 package without the control center. No problems now (except for this DVD problem). I'm thinking that if I uninstall the current driver - install the dotnetframework package and service pack and then install the new 4.9 driver with control center, that might work.......right? -- Can anyone suggest anything before I try this (in a few hours hehe)?
  11. yep....after all - so long as its legit - there's always the phone activation that I've had to use before (with custommer's new OEM's) and never had a problem on the phone with them Regards, N.
  12. And on a rare occasion, you may find that after replacing the 'MB', you might not even need to repair the installation. My example would be with an old Soltek motherboard ad replacing it with a new KT6 Delta - both VIA chipset-based which is probably one of the reasons why. Of course, you might have further possibilities if you can 'System Prep' it and then replace your motherboard. Of course you'll have to (in most cases) go through the welcome & activation process but it might be a solution for those who want to replace the MB and not have to start from fresh or attempt a repair (they dont 'always' work ) Regards, N.
  13. Is there a newer version of Net Limiter? If its a old program or not kept up-to-date, then its bound to be buggy with new software (i.e. SP2) If they have support forums for it, try looking at them or contacting customer support for it (if at all poss). Regards, N.
  14. Yep...its always recommended that you do a clean install with something like this. Here's a funny tale on this: I disabled NIS2004 and installed the FULL SP2 on my machine.... For some reason, it stuck at the end (cant remember if it was the cleaning up bit or not but it was near the end) and I had no choice but to reset the machine... ...a thumbs up for MS in that it detected that the SP hadnt fully installed and told me that I'd have to uninstall it and try again. I did (this took quite a while) and before installing it again, I uninstalled a few other programs for good measure.... This time it worked no trouble. So I'd recommend if you do want to do it and dont want to start from fresh, uninstall all the programs that you really dont need i.e. RealPlayer, QuickTime, Adobe, Anti-Spyware, etc... - making sure that they dont leave anything (plugged-in to windows - i.e. some anti-spyware might) and run a reg cleaner (i.e. Norton Systemworks 2003/4 from CD) to help clear up any invalid settings and stuff that might be in the registry. You could also run scandisk & defrag for good measure - imagine it trying to upgrade a install of XP which is installed on bad sectors or has filesystem errors .....eeek. All the best with your SP2 fun Regards, N.
  15. Well I think for starters, you should take a look at these two pages. They might be of some help to you Microsoft Group Policy ADM Files and Group Policy Settings Reference for .adm files included with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 There may be some option to control it in these new updated files. If you update the server policies with these, then you should be on the right track Regards, N.
  16. Just a little question regarding this but what is the actual benefit of using the newer Sun's version as opposed to Microsoft's older version? Is there any "real" benefits? (dont shout at me, just an avenue I havent explored properly yet) Regards, Nath
  17. Try and you shall see - again....it was a long time ago I did it but all I remember is having to put this file on the floppy disk and have it in the drive as the setup process starts... Mind you, that could have been with the OPK CD & network install but all I remember is that before I tried creating a custom XP CD (with the winnt.sif file) I had used a unattend.txt answer file and then read that I had to change it if it was going to be on the CD. Its all in the OPK .....er....somewhere Regards, N.
  18. Not 100% here but if there is an option for this somewhere, is it possible that you have disabled the Compatibility Wizard (and associated stuff)? :S Regards, N
  19. yep...I'll have to see if there's a new bios revision on the site, it might be worth a look. Regarding the HSF (CPU fan), I doubt its that - altho it sounds like a obvious thing - because I have a whole range of them at work and they all dont run very well - all running very hot. Tried reinstalling win98se on one of them and it was a really sluggish process....until it started crash and messing up. Regards, N.
  20. Wow!... quick response gamehead Nope...not had a chance yet (it was 12:40am by the time I'd finished so far ) ...not sure if I've got any better RAM lying around but hope so HD...no problems that I've aware of - seems quite nippy and working as it should. Regards, N.
  21. Hi all (be warned, you'll need a coffee for this) This may be completely obvious and its probably the fact that I've been working all day and working on this problem for the past few hours that I'm really missing something here but please help me out regardless please Right... I decided to wipe a system for a friend and went through a nice long process of backing up most of the stuff on his data partition - altho not gonna wipe this, it was a precautionary measure Anyhow...this took a fair while as there was 5 users in all... I had a built a XP CD with SP2 slipstreamed and mostly unattended (except for the partitoning part - naturally - and the product key) with the sysprep tools at the end being optional (with it being a reinstall, not sure whether he needed to agree to the EULA again but this aint the issue here) Anyhow...booted the CD fine and it was going thru the inital stages of loading things into the memory i.e. volume manager, drivers, windows setup, etc. and then I got to: "Setup is starting Windows" (the one where it would say if you weren't using a answer file Welcome to Windows XP setup - or something similar - its been so long since I haven't used a answer file, that I cant remember the norm hehe) Well at this point it just hung and the keyboard appears to be locked out. I'm used to a slight pause but I was sitting there ages & I thought that it was definately not going any further. I thought it might be the cd build I had made so I tried another one that I'd done (and tested previously with no probs) and no luck there - same thing. Then tried his original XP Home CD (I forget the SP level) and exactly the same. As it was running pretty hot, even for a AMD, at 75C I thought I'd let it cool down first and turned it off for a while. Tried again and the same thing happened - temp was about 59C - but even so, i thought that cant be right. I know it isnt the CD drive (DVD/CD-RW combo - Liteon) as its a fairly new one and it was working perfectly in windows and in initially booting, so I can only think its something else. Any suggestions on this as we've always had trouble with this PC. Its a Q-TEC (old old case & PSU) which is bad for starters and the Gigabyte board in it - fairly new revision - I forget the model so I dont know if its the latest... I'm not convinced it is particually great either. The memory is some nasty cheap stuff too (256MB PC133) and I would have said that this, the PSU & the overheating issues are a combined affect here but I dont know. Please please please could anyone help shed some light on this one (those that havent fallen asleep that is hehe)? Many Regards & a pint or 10 for the one who can help me sort it. Nath
  22. just a small note to say that an answer file on the floppy disk would be called: unattend.txt NOT like on the CD where it is called: winnt.sif (at least, the last time I did a floppy-based answer file it was hehe but then again, maybe I've forgotten ) All the details regarding a answer file are in the reference/deployment guides you can get i.e. OPK Tools/CD, various website, indeed, even this lovely forum is likely to have such info in one of the unattended sections. Regards, Nathan
  23. Hi Phil I would say "seperately" but I'm sure someone else knows for sure. As the hotfix list is now for SP2 (I think), the last list for SP1 is somewhere on the forum (except that I have no idea where) which should have the details of where to put them. Regards, Nath
  24. *smugly grins* Told ya On the 31st Aug, I couldnt find it *anywhere* (and couldnt find a link for 2.1 either) - Windows Update, download center, nowhere (except 3rd party sites) Whats the link for 2.1? I take it that you've got it!? Its included in SP2 tho right? Regards, Nath
  25. Agreed! It doesnt have anything to do with XPCREATE - the process will take the files as needed - so as GM & 'moi' have mentioned, you need to go to the Unattended section: Try http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=70 for example or maybe looking at microsoft's website for using winnt.sif/unattend.txt/answer files. Good luck! Regards, Nath
