Thanks for the info on older versions of TeraCopy never working with Windows 98SE. I was going to hunt around for some older versions, won't bother to do so now. Haven't tried FirstCopy yet, downloaded it to test. I am already using 2xExplorer which I just found out from reading an older thread of MSFN from 2007 might actually do what TeraCopy and the others do. "Speed up file copying with TeraCopy" On page 2 (Post 21) deXter wrote: I use xplorer² as my system default file manager, and its file copying functions are *much* faster than windows's. It may not be as full featured as some of the dedicated file copying programs here, but you do have pause/resume, error recovery, queuing, priority, replacement, archiving and logging options. On PCs that don't have xplorer², I use XCOPY. Even on my own PC, whenever I'm working in the console, I just use XCOPY to transfer files/folders. It supports pause/resume, error recovery, archiving, some unique tree management (can replicate an entire folder structure without copying the files!) and advanced NTFS-related options. Definitely better than windows' copy, and hence worth a mention in this thread. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- If I remember, 2xExplorer is the earlier version of xplorer2. I didn't care for the newer version, xplorer2 but I did like 2xExplorer and it works with Windows 98SE. I haven't used it as much as I should, I tried a small transfer between the two panes yesterday and it did seem to be super fast. I may just get in the habit of using this more. But I will check some others out. TmEE ... if you find something that you like, please post the information. I'm interested in what you decide on and any info from anybody else also. There are also some other software names mentioned in that 2007 thread. *** I posted last January (2010) about 2xExplorer and xplorer2. "Win 98SE: 2xExplorer (Older Version) - xplorer2 (Newer Version)" The link to 2xExplorer still works and xplorer2 should be in the "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" ...

Never heard of TeraCopy so I went looking to see if it will work with Win 98SE. Just discovered that a new version came out today at Major Geeks, TeraCopy 2.2 Beta: Date: 2010-09-10 Size: 1.65 MB License: Freeware Requires: Win XP/2003/Vista/Windows7 http://majorgeeks.com/TeraCopy_d5674.html It no longer list Win 9x in the requirements. However, TeraCopy v2.12 is still available at CNET: Operating system: Windows 98/XP/Vista Date added: January 18, 2010 http://download.cnet.com/TeraCopy/3000-2248_4-10671835.html Just never know how long version 2.12 links will be available with a newer version just out. *** Just want to add, they list Win 98 working with v2.12. I have not tried the download yet, so I can't be 100% sure that is correct. *** I tried v2.12 with Win 98SE and it doesn't work for me, there are errors. Looks like the OS information is incorrect ... must be XP and Vista only.

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
Monroe replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Latest version of Stinger v10.0.1.926 (McAfee Labs) (June 25,2010) still works with Windows 98SE ... it's listed as able to check for 3451 viruses, trojans and variants. Good little program to keep handy for a quick check. "Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files and scan performance optimizations." http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ -
Compatible Hardware with Windows 9x
Monroe replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
wsxedcrfv .... just came across all the discussion on CD/DVD burners ... thanks for the info on several models and the tigerdirect.com link. Never heard of them, they have quite a few models of burners at very good prices. However, I am more interested in getting an External USB CD/DVD burner for my Win 98SE notebooks. I have been looking for sometime at Amazon and Buy.com but these new slim DVD burners don't seem to get many good reviews since they get power from a the USB hookup. I want to get an "older" larger type that also has a power adapter. I'm reading that some people have sent those slim USB burners back since they didn't burn all that good. Can the same be said for an External burner that it should work with Win 98SE, even if nothing is listed in the description or on the box. Here's a burner I found at TigerBay .... http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5391204&CatId=483 What are your thoughts about these models with external power? You seem to be in the know on burners ... or thoughts or ideas from anyone else on External burners for Win 98SE. thanks ... -
Sp0iLedBrAt ... thanks for the info. I will check those links out. I did figure out my Windows Update problem ... I had to update IE 5 to IE 6 and I am downloading the updates now.

I have decided to try Windows 2000 Pro on one of my computers. I have Windows 2000 Pro SP4 installed. I was just wondering if there was ever an "Unofficial" Windows 2000 update package made with all the updates after SP4 like there is for Windows 98SE? I have tried going to the Windows Update page but I keep getting an error. I have not been able to find an update package after the SP4 update. I'd like to download all the updates for Windows 2000 and burn them to a CD for the future. I know there are more updates since the Belarc Advisor is saying that I am missing quite a few updates. Thanks ...

Win 98SE - New DST Update At MDGx Web Site Won't Install.
Monroe replied to Monroe's topic in Windows 9x/ME
MDGx ... yes, the new DST Update installed with no problem. I guess this update is then "newer" and "better" than the Feb 2010 DST update ... so I will install it on my computers. Thanks again for ALL you do for everyone! *** Thanks for the conversion tool download. -
Win 98SE - New DST Update At MDGx Web Site Won't Install.
Monroe replied to Monroe's topic in Windows 9x/ME
MDGx ... Yes, the Feb 2010 DST update works for me. I think I had already put that update on in March but I put it on again to test it. Going back to the other update that didn't seem to work ... maybe it was OK, no one else reported any problem with it. I noticed when I went to shut down my computer there was a pop up window (for only a second!) with the word "Error" on it. I couldn't read anything else ... makes me "mad" when those windows only stay open for a second and a person doesn't have a chance to read everything. I thought I also saw "NT" but I can't be sure. I do have the last stable version of KernelEX installed on my computer, if there would be any connection there. thanks ... -

Reformatting A New NTFS 500 GB USB Ext Hard Drive to Fat32 ...
Monroe replied to Monroe's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Yes jaclaz, I had found some info about using SwissKnife before I bought the new USB External hard drive. Already had SwissKnife downloaded. I also found info on using FDISK and DOS ... but I am weak on DOS knowledge and after I bought the drive, I got lucky and found the little Verbatim FAT32 utility ... couldn't have been any easier ... at least for me ... maybe for some others also. Thank for the reply. -
Went to Office Max yesterday and bought a new Seagate 500 GB External USB Hard Drive to use with Windows 98SE. When I connected it, the USB icon in the tray appeared but no drive letter was showing in My Computer. Was hoping I could make this work ... Read a review on this particular hard drive and that it would not work with Windows 98SE since it comes pre-formatted for NTFS. However, after searching around on Google last night, I found this little utility that is supposed to reformat a NTFS USB hard drive to FAT32. http://www.verbatim.com/downloads/format.cfm How to Reformat a Verbatim Hard Drive for Windows Verbatim provides a FAT32 format utility (see further below for download instructions) that eliminates the 32GB partition limitation. There is a link in this part: Formatting to FAT32 Click here to download the Verbatim FAT32 format utility. Save the file to your computer at a location that can easily be remembered. After the file has finished downloading, close all internet browser windows and browse to the location of the file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I didn't think it would have to be a Verbatim hard drive. I don't have an XP computer though ... you will need that since the USB hard drive has to be "seen". I went to a friend's XP computer today and hooked the USB drive up and ran the FAT32 utility. It took about 20 seconds and it was now a USB FAT32 500 GB external hard drive. Tried it on my Win 98SE machine ... showing up as a 500 GB drive as Drive "E" ... it is also backward compatible to USB 1.1 ... I hooked it into a computer that is USB 2.0 (Windows 98SE) and then I hooked it into an older USB 1.1 hub that I still use. Don't know if this will be of any help to anyone. Maybe someone that also wanted to get a larger external hard drive. Getting hard to find older FAT32 external hard drives these days. That Fat32 utility made everything very easy and painless. ...

Win 98SE: 2xExplorer (Older Version) - xplorer2 (Newer Version)
Monroe replied to Monroe's topic in Windows 9x/ME
PROBLEMCHYLD ... I was interested to see if anyone would reply to your last post about "making" 2xExplorer the default over Windows Explorer. However, I found this question asked in the FAQs section for 2xExplorer and the reply from the 2xExplorer developer, I guess. He doesn't recommend doing that but does make a suggestion. http://netez.com/2xExplorer/faq.html Q15. How can I make 2xExplorer the default application for all my folders? A. I wouldn't recommend replacing the standard explorer altogether, but it's very easy to add a "verb" that will give you the chance to open folders with 2xExplorer. From explorer edit the "File Type" associations (View | Folder Options | File Types tab). It's not very intuitive, but if you scroll down you'll find a Folder "file type", which you can Edit as usual. Create a new verb e.g. "2xOpen" and edit its action. This should have "c:\YourPath\2xExplorer.exe" "%1" as the new command line (including the quotation marks, too). Now whenever you right click on a folder, there's going to be a "2xOpen" item in the context menu. There was another forum site (Google search) that someone asked the same question and the answer looked interesting but the forum isn't up at present. FREE Explorer Replacement... - HFT Online Forums 4 posts - 3 authors - Last post: Sep 24, 2007 Yes, an excellent, free replacement for MS's Explorer. ... Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
Monroe replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
MDGx .... thanks for mentioning FreeCommander 2008.06c. Finally had a little time to work with it today. I like it very much ... never heard of it before, thanks again. -
Ok, thanks for the additional help. Yes, I saw that in that article but I have no idea how to get that onto a floppy disc or how to load anything into the config.sys. Do I copy all those instuctions to notepad in the form of a text and then put that onto a floppy? Look I will read the links that you have supplied. This really isn't that important for me to know all this anyway. I have the Ghost program working in my older computers, which works for me. I have no real reason to have USB working in DOS anyway. I'll stick with Win 98SE and work on the DOS thing in bits and pieces. If I truly never understand DOS, it will not be a big loss for me. .... Thanks again

Well, then I don't understand why the DOS USB drivers are out there as downloads. I know that when I put some DOS USB drivers (Panasonic package) on my old Toshiba several years ago I was able to see the USB flash drive so I could use the Ghost program. I didn't install Ghost with USB drivers, just used the "normal" Ghost program on the CD. As I said earlier, I have very limited knowledge of anything DOS related. So you are saying these DOS USB drivers are of no use to me in the way I placed them manually into the System folder. I can very easily remove them if they are completely worthless on my system, that's no problem. What DOS USB driver package should be used and how should they be installed and where will these drivers be sitting after the install? Just for my knowledge.
-
sp193 I have extracted from several different DOS USB downloads the following USB drivers. Just finished this yesterday and then I manually placed them into my System folder, I didn't add the Cypress drivers. I was able to get the Kingston flash drive to finally show up in the IBM Thinkpad yesterday. Ghost 2003 does have a version that loads USB drivers, but I never could see the flash drive when I worked with it in the past ... I spent some time with it yesterday and finally saw the USB flash drive and did a Ghost backup. This wasn't a real critical thing for me on the IBM since it has a CD/DVD burner and I just use that ... but I still wanted to see if I could get the flash drive to "show up". I was not doing a few things right when Ghost was installing ... I don't have Ghost installed on my machine, everything on a CD that starts when I boot the computer. I made up the list so I could tell in the future if a "newer" version of one of those DOS USB drivers shows up, I have enough info at a glance to see if I indeed do have a "newer" version of a driver. --------------------------------------------------------------- USB DOS Drivers Panasonic: Usbaspi_sys ... 11/27/2002 37.0 KB Usbaspi0_sys ... 05/25/2001 42.5 KB Usbaspi1_sys ... 11/26/2002 37.0 KB Usbaspi2_sys ... 10/26/2003 38.1 KB Usbaspi3_sys ... 11/07/2004 38.2 KB Usbaspia_sys ... 11/26/2002 20.3 KB Usbaspib_sys ... 05/21/2001 42.5 KB Usbaspie_sys ... 11/07/2004 38.2 KB Usbcd_sys ... 11/11/2002 5.37 KB Iomega: Aspi1394_sys ... 08/14/2002 46.7 KB Aspiehci_sys ... 09/27/2002 48.6 KB Aspiohci_sys ... 08/14/2002 48.0 KB Aspiuhci_sys ... 08/14/2002 49.4 KB Motto-Hairu: Di1000dd_sys ... 08/16/2001 15.9 KB Ramfd_sys ... 11/11/2002 21.5 KB OHCIUHCI: Ohci ... 04/12/2004 126.0 KB Uhci ... 04/12/2004 127.0 KB Cypress USB: Duse42 ... 04/26/2002 95.4 KB Duse44 ... 09/20/2002 104.0 KB Duse49 ... 03/17/2002 106.0 KB Duseldr ... 09/20/2002 1.94 KB Ninja-USB: Njusbcda.sys ... 05/17/2000 17.6 KB

sp193 ... thanks for explaining in more detail about the different USB drivers. I will Google what you wrote for more information. I forgot to mention ... the IBM Thinkpad came with Win XP installed and I took it off and put Win 98SE on. I think I remember reading somewhere that XP didn't really use DOS like 98SE or maybe there was a different version of DOS on an XP computer. I would like to get my flash drive to work in DOS on the IBM. It might come in handy one day. ... thanks again
-
Ok, I did forget to mention that I also downloaded the USB drivers mentioned in your earlier post. I installed both, so maybe it was those drivers that worked. I can't say with my limited knowledge on all this. I do still have a problem though ... it was my older Toshiba notebook that has no CD burner and I needed the flash drive to be reconized in DOS for the Ghost program. The USB slot in that computer is 1.1 ... and of course the flash drive does work. Now in my newer IBM Thinkpad I still do not see the Kingston flash. The USB slot in the IBM is 2.0 speed. I am thinking that these drivers are only for USB 1.1 and not 2.0 ... then that might explain why I still can't see the Kingston flash drive in the IBM. Is the case or can someone give me some ideas or an explanation on the flash drive not being detected (DOS)on the newer IBM? ...thanks ** thanks for the new version download ... will work with that.

Just a quick update on the USB Drivers for DOS so that Ghost would also work with a flash drive. I came across this article about Panasonic Japan USB drivers for DOS. This particular package seems to be the one to have. It's called the "miracle driver" from Japan. I never could get my Kingston Data Traveler 4GB flash drive to show up in DOS but now it does. I was able to make a Ghost backup on a computer with no CD/DVD burner. I made the backup to the flash drive and then went to another computer with a burner to put the backup on a CD. Article about the Panasonic Japan driver: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1046069/yes-usb-drivers-dos This is just the "beginning" of the article and it does mention using Ghost: Yes, there are USB drivers for DOS... Miracle-driver from Panasonic Japan does the unthinkable By Fernando Cassia Friday, 27 June 2003 HAVING AN EXTERNAL USB cd-writer or hard disk works wonders as long as your operating system is in good shape. But if someday the system stops booting, you are lost. Booting from good old MS-DOS or Windows boot diskettes - even fitted with the needed third party NTFSDOS or EXTFS drivers - gives you access to your fixed hard disk only, but none of the USB peripherals can be accessed from the DOS command line. Before you start scratching your head, let me repeat that this is not related to your favorite linux distro's or Windows XP/W2K/98/ME's USB support, this has to do with people like me, booting some flavor of DOS to copy files around or using DOS-based partition back-up software. Imagine that you want to use Paragon Drive Backup, Powerquest's Drive Image, or Norton Ghost, to backup your hard disk partitions to that nice 120gb external USB 2.0 hard disk you just bought. You can't do it. Or if your wife/husband has managed to mess up her/his system so badly that it can't boot anymore, yet she/he wants you to have a copy of those nice digital pictures stored on a compactflash card plugged into the compactflash reader?. No way, Jose. Not from DOS, used to be the phrase. ---------------------------------------------------------------- This is the backup (in Japanese - but the download tab is easy to spot.) http://panasonic.co.jp/pcc/products/drive/cdrrw/kxlrw40an/download.html Thought I should post this, if anyone else had the same problem or needed a fix.

Thanks jaclaz and herbalist ... as I mentioned before, my knowledge of DOS is very limited. I worked for the government in the early 90s when I actually got my first computer placed on my desk ... it was DOS (I think, it was hard to get things figured out!) and then in like 3 months, everybody was getting another new computer with Win 95 on it. That was for me, I at least understood a computer better. It didn't seem to be too very long that new computers with Win 98 were being installed. All that stuff was happening fast back in the 90's. So you might say, DOS came and went fast for me, I just really never had the opportunity to fool around with it. I still have that interest to play around with DOS on one of my computers and try to understand it better and how it worked.
-
Ok ... I missed that line, "Read the included USBINTRO.DOC file for documentation and information on how to use the programs." at the web page. After unzipping the package, I read the "readme" in the package but there is no mention made in there to go the USBINTRO.DOC. I saw it but didn't open it. Had no reason to go back to the web site where I might have read that line. Honest mistake on my part ... with 186 pages I may have to put that off for a few days also. I will figure it all out. ... thanks
-
OK, thanks, I will work with those USB drivers later in a few days. Concerning the other package ... what exactly are those DOS drivers? Since I already have Win 98SE with DOS installed, are those drivers already on my hard drive. I'd still like to know how to install something like that package, as I asked in my first post. Just for general knowledge for the future. That person that has that web site seems to be updating that DOS USB package regularly.
-
No, all my computers accept a flash drive ... no problem there. I just added this to my last post ... "I need to get the Ghost backup onto a flash drive then go to a computer with a burner and I then have my CD/DVD Ghost backup." From my research I need to get DOS USB flash drivers so that I can work with a flash drive in DOS. I just thought that DOS USB Driver package (USBDOS - http://bretjohnson.us/ ) would have what I need. I was just going to install the whole package to test other things also. I also have some old DOS games that I bought years ago but have never installed, although I probably don't need that package for that, not sure. Right now, if I have my USB flash drive inserted and I go into DOS with Ghost, I see no USB drives listed ... need the DOS drivers.
