.... I pretty much trust anything posted by Maximus Decim, MDGx, Gape, Sporific and Xeno86 .... there are others also and lots of 9x people, like myself, ocassionally post a link. I have never questioned the members mentioned above, if they do release something and it's faulty, they work to get it right. Sorry if I left a few other good names out of this post, those are the names that came to me as I typed this. Others can add to the list. duffy98

Hey Dude .... thanks for the link .... great page, never heard of that one .... lots to check out. Will be there later this week end. duffy98

Now to answer the question in your earlier post.... Duff, just to be 100% clear: 1. You install the factory Win 98SE CD 2. Load the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a 3. Load the Maximus Decim Cumulative Update v3.05 For Windows 98SE 4. Tweak with updated drivers, load proggies, etc... 5. Clean 'er up 6. Ghost the C ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's been awhile since I have done a fresh install since I have the Ghost backups ... I usually just run his (Maximus Decim) updates as they come out. So I went back to check his "order of install " list ... this is his list that comes in the current package .... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Maximus Decim aka Maxud The detailed description of the order of installation Windows 98SE, necessary updates and components. 08/20/2008 1. And still!!! Basically, Windows 98SE supports work with operative memory in the size up to 2Gb, but not all so is simple. Therefore, if Windows 98SE that is installed on a computer with operative memory greater than 512 Mb: 1.In BIOS sets the size of aperture AGP in minimal Value (64 mbytes are usual) for economy of addresses. 2. Sets the maximal cache size from 512Mb up to 64Mb - to whom as it is pleasant - too for economy of addresses. For this purpose it is used MaxFileCache=xxx (where xxx - the cache size in KILOBYTES) in section [vcache] a file System.ini If all works and is left, if glitches proceed: 3.If memory has more 1Gb, we add MaxPhysPage=40000 if from 1Gb up to 768Mb - MaxPhysPage=30000 in section [386enh] a file System.ini ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now I am thinking that you should do his #1 and #2 first and then if you want that Win 98SE Boot and Shutdown logo do it as #3 and then go back to his list and install his update package and the rest of what he has listed as he instructs. He has more knowledge than I do about Windows 98SE and I go with what he has on his list. I only run the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a as something extra ... I run the whole package and then it will be updated with Maximus Decim's update package. If you want that Windows 98SE Animated Boot and Shutdown Logo .... your machine will say "Windows 98 Seccond Edition" instead of just Windows 98 when you boot up and log off .... and it's colorful also! ... other than that, the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a could be skipped .... Now there is one thing I change ... I only put .NET Framework 1.1 and the updates on ... I don't install .NET Framework 2.0 .... I have it ready to install ... right now, I just use version 1 ... I am still wondering if I need version 2 for Win 98SE .... that would be a good thread for someone to start ... is version 2 needed for Win 98SE ... what benefits would there be? .... I do run into a program once in awhile that requires version 2 ... still researching all that .... would like to hear opinions. I also don't install #13 - SAPI 4.0, SAPI 5.1 ... I have them also stored away but do I really need those 2 downloads ... not sure what they do ... My computer seems to run fine without them ... I have been thinking, I may install both .NET Framework 2.0 and SAPI 4.0, SAPI 5.1 ... I can always take them off by running the Ghost backup ... I'm just not sure I need them ... maybe someone can post some info on them ... not sure what SAPI 4.0, SAPI 5.1 do. Also, for #10 ... I use Media Player 6.4 and the update 320920 ... I add Media Player Classic with the "last" K-Lite codec package for Win 98SE and also XMPlay ... I like that little player, when you add the plug-ins and such ... small player but a good sound ... just my preference. ... http://www.un4seen.com/xmplay.html ..... After everything is installed, before I make a Ghost copy ... I run the system to check everything is OK, maybe a day or at least a day ... then I clean the registry, delete junk with some cleaners, CCleaner and such ... do a scandisk and defrag last and then make the Ghost copy ... want the new install to be as clean as possible to have for future use ... so that now becomes my "fresh install" if something goes wrong or my hard drive goes bad .... but all my settings and programs, updates are done ... just add newer updates as they come out or if I have to use the Ghost backup. You could do a Ghost right after you install Win 98SE and the above updates and then another one later on when you finally get your machine just the way you want it .... then if you would mess something up ... you wouldn't have to start all over again installing Win 98SE ... just start with the updates already installed. Hope this is of some help ... this is what I pretty much do ... others may have things to add or ideas of their own ... duffy98

Hi, The only way I know how to "lock down" the Hosts file is to use WinPatrol with Scotty the little barking dog .... I really don't lock down my hosts file because Scotty will "bark" if anyone tries to change your hosts file. The later versions of WinPatrol work with Win 98SE but I like this version .... WinPatrol v7.0.1.0 ... it is free and does a lot of other things also ... guards your computer as you surf .... Scotty will bark if someone tries to change things .... you may try the later versions and this version ... just like this version myself ... does what I need. I am also sure others will have others ways of locking the host file ... you will hear from them. When you update that Host file (which I also use) that you mentioned earlier, Scotty will bark usually within 3 minutes to let you know that your host file has changed. You go to the last tab ... Options, click on it and you will see a box there to "lock" your Hosts file. This is the latest version from FileHippo .... ... http://www.filehippo.com/download_winpatrol/ .... that other version will be on Google somewhere .... Will answer your other questions later on ... short of time. duffy98

.... quite welcome ! Yes, I just use his (Maximus Decim) updates as they come out. After I get everything just the way I want it ... Use CCleaner for junk and some good registry cleaners, a Scandisk and Defrag and after I have all my settings and things the way I want everything then I use Ghost 8.3 to have a nice backup that only takes minutes to reinstall, if something happens or the hard drive goes bad ... but you don't have hours or days of work getting everything set up again ... maybe just a few updates. I was posting some similar stuff under "Newbie is Desperate" . I have that Zone Alarm version link there, if you care to try that version and some others have posted some good stuff for that message. There is another Windows 98SE update pack ... it is old now and the fellow (Gape) has a "work in progress" on a newer version. However, I still run this older version first, right after a fresh install of Windows 98SE and then I start with the Maximus Decim updates. He has a neat Windows 98SE Animated Boot and Shutdown Logo (Optional) and I like that on my notebook .... ...... http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html ........... You can check it out if you care to. duffy

herbalist .... I mentioned Zone Alarm in an earlier post. It seems to always work for me and I test it every so often with the Shield UP test at Gibson Research .... .... http://www.grc.com/default.htm but I also have an interest in the Kerio 2.1.5 firewall that you mention .... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some firewalls are extremely light and won't slow your system at all. Kerio 2.1.5 is such a firewall, but it's not for inexperienced users. The pros and cons of a software firewall on 98 and details of its usage should really be its own thread. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .... I have tried to work with it off and on and have never completely understood how to set everything up. Are you familiar with any web site that might have setup instructions or a "step by step" guide ... I use "The Proxomitron" with my Windows 98SE setup and I never was sure about getting that to work with Kerio 2.1.5 ... I have the download and I have searched Google for some sort of help guide .... it looks like a great firewall if I could just set it up. I would compare my Zone Alarm version and Kerio with Memload to see which one uses less resources but they might be close. duffy98

..... yes, I thought the same thing about the "hard drive" ... I guess that is really "Step 1" and then go for it ! In an earlier post I mentioned that I use Zone Alarm v4.5.594. I've tried later versions but they don't seem all that great with Win 98SE and I just wanted a good firewall. I use my cell phone and/or WiFi to connect to the internet mostly (notebook) so this works for me. If you like some other firewall or some other arrangement, that's fine. However, for anyone interested in that Zone Alarm version OR other versions of Zone Alarm for Windows 98SE ... I am posting a download page that can be very hard to locate at times. There are other good firewalls and I have tried several but I personally like v4.5.594. I just wanted a good firewall and not all the "extras" that have been added in later versions .... but others have good opinions also ... I only post this for anyone interested in trying that version of Zone Alarm in general. ... http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/info...aseHistory.html ...... HTH

Hi all, .... I have been using this little program for years, along with Memload, to watch my memory go up and down as I open and close programs. I know there are other programs like this one but it frees up memory after you close a program and it uses very little resources. ... RAMpage ... .... http://www.jfitz.com/RAMpage/ .... It works with 98SE and I recently put it on a computer running XP, so this person could watch what programs use the most memory through the day (it's an office computer). It seems to be working just fine with XP .... it's been over 2 weeks and I have had no phone calls .... but it's really great for 98SE. *** .... I should add, I use version 1.6 ... which is what you get on the "Download" tab at the bottom. Most people might not need version 1.6.1 ... but you can read and decide if that version is really needed but you must install v1.6 first and then v1.6.1, so the instructions say. ... but v1.6 works for me and also on that XP computer. "Version 1.6.1 displays 4 (tiny!) digits when memory exceeds 1000M. To upgrade, download this file, unzip it, and replace RAMpage.exe in the original installation folder, (C:\Program Files\RAMpage\RAMpage.exe by default). Note that you need to install Version 1.6 first. The source code for Version 1.6.1 is available here." duffy98

Hi ... Perhaps most of you know about this little registry backup program that extends the automatic 5 days that Windows 98SE (98 also) saves as a backup for a problem ... this program can extend the backups to 14 ( ... or any number if you wish, 20, 50 etc.). I post it here for Win 98SE people who never heard of it .... I copied this description of what it is and how it works ... very easy to set up and use and you have 14 days of emergency registry backups to fall back on. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To improve on the 5 days MS have on registry backups, use the Cabrest system below and get 14 days. ... http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/regback1.html For those that find the above site confusing, here is what to do. Alter MaxBackupCopies from 5 to 14 in scanreg.ini ( as per instructions at above site ) Download the zipped copy of the Batch file from, ... http://www.pcnineoneone.com/downloads/cabrest.zip Unzip, copy and paste cabrest onto the top of C or drop into "C" : in Windows Explorer . Delete zip file, or save it on floppy, if you want it for others or the future . Print the instructions below and stick on your computer in front of you or keep them handy, so when you have to go back to a good copy of the registry, you don't need to search for them . ------------------------------------ Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMA pool message comes on ) or Press Ctrl during bootup, depends on your computer . Select , Command Prompt only . Type in cabrest and press Enter , keep answering "y" and you will see a table, which will allow you to select which CAB file to restore from. So, for example, to restore from rb009 cab, you look at the table and see 09 corresponds to the letter "j". You type "j" and NOT the number. Follow instructions . Type win and press Enter to exit . If after following the instructions to Restore, things aren't working, go to an earlier date and try again . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .... http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/regback1.html Hope this might be helpful to someone .... duffy98

Hi .... I have a question in Post #3 ... I did understand Post #1 and deleted those entries out of the registry but I don't understand how to delete the HWINFO entries. You say this in your post : -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "You can safely run the above registry deleter (the first one!), and it will definitely remove many of them, but some will likely remain." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What "registry deleter" is this ? ... are you talking about a delete program ? .... you mention the "first one!" ... I just don't see or understand that part of your post. ... just not sure what the "first one!" is. thanks, duffy98

Hey whatever420 .... thanks for posting about the NEUTRON time program. What a small, neat program. I am using that one now for time adjustment. ... good program. duffy98

herbalist - CharlotteTheHarlot, I was able to get Process Explorer version 10.21 at FileHippo ... I have been using version 11.11 so I guess the last "10" version (v10.21) will be fine.... I will just live with the version 7.04 for FileMon and RegMon ... they seem to work OK with Windows 98SE. I use a program called Memload to see how much resources a program or a particular version uses. Neat little program for Win 98, in case somebody never heard of it. You can test different versions with it to see if there is much of a difference in resources being used. Keep the information flowing ... duffy98

herbalist - Rick, I'd be interested in having copies of the 3 programs that you mentioned ... what versions are you talking about ... the smaller size versions ... I do not have version 10.04 of Process Explorer and I do not have version 7.03 of Regmon and Filemon. I have version 7.04 ... since I read your post I have been looking on Google for an active download link to these versions and every link seems to be dead or goes to Microsoft for versions 7.04. I'd like to get a copy of that smaller version (10.04) of Process Explorer to try out ... I can probably live with versions 7.04 of Filemon and Regmon unless it would be possible for someone to post an active link or if you have them available for download. thanks ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Examples: Process Explorer Version 10.04 is 1.37MB (would like this one) Version 10.21 is 3.45MB Regmon Version 7.03 is 417KB (would like this one) Version 7.04 is 600KB Filemon Version 7.03 is 436KB (would like this one) Version 7.04 is 730KB I see no real changes in any of these from the last Sysinternals versions to the MS versions, except that the "save as" option of the MS versions of Filemon and Regmon doesn't work on 98. The previous versions do. I really have to wonder just what they changed that nearly doubled their size or even more. Regarding the EULA, if we work with versions that were released before MS bought them, the old EULA applies, not the new one. I have copies of all the Sysinternals utilities from before the purchase if anyone needs them. Rick --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- as far as having trouble with reading the top post ... I also have to scroll way to the right to read it. ... using IE 6 and Win 98SE. thanks, duffy98

Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.3.05 (New!)
Monroe replied to maximus-decim's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Maximus Decim / others... I downloaded and installed the latest version 3.05 and never saw anything about the two Optional components that are now part of this download. .... the Zip-folders and Spider Solitaire. There was nothing that gave me the option to install or pass on these two items. Just curious if anyone else had noticed this when they installed the latest version. I have installed this update on two Win 98SE laptop computers and it installed OK but those two options never appeared either time for me to make a decision to install or not install. I already have Spider but was interested more in checking out the Zip-folders program. thanks, duffy98 -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE

Thanks herbalist for checking with the developer of SSM concerning the MPC problem. Since Media Player Classic seems to be the only program that might conflict with SSM, it would have been nice if the developer had the time and the interest to know why this one program has a problem with their product. ... Maybe someone (at the company) will research it out someday, just to understand the problem. Now I am curious, with newer versions of SSM and XP installed if MPC works OK on that system. I don't have XP so I can't test it, but that's something that would be interesting to know. I will just switch to XM Player, which is very good, but MPC played DVDs really good with the K-Lite codec package .... maybe there are other simple good DVD players out there ... but I don't play that many DVD movies on my pc anyway. ... there is one thing that I want to check out about MPC ... when I install the "full" K-Lite codec package I install MPC with it ... it's all in one package, but it's an option .... maybe it's not MPC ... maybe it's something in the K-Lite package ... so I need to try some different installs to see if MPC really is the problem. thanks - duffy -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
Monroe replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
herbalist ... thanks for replying about SSM and being able to duplicate the Media Player Classic problem. I really like the SSM program but I have used Media Player Classic with the K-lite codec package for several years. I guess I could switch to another player ... you said you have never run into any problems with the SSM 2.0.8.583 version so this one program might be the only hangup ... MPC is such a small good DVD player but I could look for another ... I never heard of Dependency Walker ... I will google that ... maybe that one program (MPC) I could run through DW. I will wait to hear if you find any solutions or ideas about what is going on with SSM and MPC. duffy -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
Monroe replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
to herbalist or anybody ... if they have run into this problem with System Safety Monitor v2.0.8.583 ... After posting a few days ago about System Safety Monitor v2.0.8.583 I have run into a problem and have taken SSM off my computer. It seemed to work with everything until I tried to open Media Player Classic ... it will not open, there are 3 "error" windows that pop up and then the computer completely freezes up. I uninstalled SSM and Media Player Classic opens and works just fine ... I re-installed SSM tonight and the errors and computer freeze up are there when I try to open Media Player Classic. Would like to know if anyone else has SSM and Media Player Classic installed on their Win 98SE machine and if there is any type of problem. -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
Monroe replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
This in response to Herbalist - post 159 ... thanks for mentioning System Safety Monitor v2.0.8.583 . I have never heard of this program but it's a really nice program to have running on a computer ... at least I think so ... I have Win Patrol always on watching for some changes but this goes deeper, keeping an eye on anything that starts up anywhere to give a person a "heads up" that something is going on. ... I did try the newer version 585. ... terrible ... got the BSOD and my computer completely froze up ... the 583 version works just great for Windows 98SE. I guess this will be the "last version" for Win 98SE. -------------------------------------------------- ... from post 159: I'm using version 2.0.8.583 of System Safety Monitor. Very stable on 98 thru XP. Haven't had the time to test their latest one, 585. The last time I tried 584, it had major problems (BSODs). Don't know if it's been fixed. With Proxomitron, version 45J is the last and the one most people use. The filter sets that come with it aren't bad. There's several other filter sets available, some still actively maintained. More on them here. Rick --------------------------------------------------- thanks, duffy98 -

Hi ... in case this might be of some help. The last version of K-Lite Codec Pack 3.45 (Full) for Windows 98SE will play pretty much everything. It has Media Player Classic also included in the download. It can be found at FileHippo and seems to play everything so far. ... http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/3194/ ... duffy98 -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
Monroe replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Hi All ... I will let the moderator (s) decide if the last version of Foxit Reader 2.2.2129 for Windows is the last version for Win 98SE. It was listed to work with this OS but the new version (v2.3) no longer lists Win 98 or 98SE. This little paragraph is from the Foxit Reader website under Info/Overview : Overview Foxit Reader is a free PDF document viewer and printer, with incredible small size (only 2.55 M download size), breezing-fast launch speed and rich feature set. Foxit Reader supports Windows Me/2000/XP/2003/Vista. Its core function is compatible with PDF Standard 1.7. -------------------------------------------- ... as I said earlier, Win 98 was listed with the last version ... I wrote to FileHippo about this same question, since they are still saying (Windows - all versions). I never heard back from them. ... but at the FoxitReader website, Win 98SE is no longer included in the list. duffy98 -
... I posted this in the "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" forum ... posted it here by mistake. duffy98

Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.3.05 (New!)
Monroe replied to maximus-decim's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Hi ... I have used this update ( Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.2.50 (New!)) three times in the past 2 weeks and have noticed that once I run it on my Win 98SE machine the USA - Eastern Time Zone and other times have dissappeared from my machine. I helped update a friend's computer and my computer twice before I realized that it was possibility related to this newer update. I only have the Alaska time zone available and mostly the far East locations. The 3rd time it happened I ran your MDGx Daylight Saving Time update and my Eastern and all other time zones were back. I am posting this so this can be checked out and confirmed by others and if it has happened to others, the fix or repair seems to be the MDGx DST update. I have done a fresh install of Win 98SE and the Eastern USA time zone was there and then when I run the Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.2.50 (New!) the Eastern and other USA time zones are gone. I noticed this Sunday when my computer didn't change the time as it should of. Still a great update to have but I need to know if others have had this problem. thanks ...
