  1. Came across this Netgear Wi-Fi card for sale at Amazon. I thought I would post this information in case someone else might need a Wi-Fi card that will still work with Windows 98SE. I had two from some years back and they weren't cheap but it was a Netgear and installed OK for Windows 98SE. I am aware that many newer notebook computers no longer have slots for PCMCIA cards which made me think that these type of cards may start to disappear or get hard to find one day. So I thought I had better hunt around for a spare or two of the Wi-Fi cards and ones that still work with Windows 98SE. I found a good deal at Amazon from an Amazon seller ... I bought one from this merchant for $14.95 with free shipping included. A few days later I saw that they had dropped the price to $13.95 (been that way for two weeks) but to get free shipping you have to order 2 to total over $25 for Amazon free shipping. I paid over $30 apiece back in 2006 so these cards have dropped in price quite a bit. It is brand new (not refurbished) and works with Windows 98SE. Yesterday, I decided to get two more just to have on hand. Maybe these cards will still be around in 5 years if I were to need one, I don't know ... so many things for Windows 98SE have disappeared over the last several years. "The WG511 is a PC Card and requires a Pentium class PC with an available 32-bit CardBus slot for installation. It supports Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows XP, 2000, 98SE, and Me. Setup is as simple as inserting the card into the slot and installing the included software. A built-in stub antenna helps you receive a strong signal for the fastest possible speeds." When I got the package there was a note that it should also work with Vista. I went to the Netgear website and downloaded the drivers from there. http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-WG511NA-Wireless-Pc-Card/dp/B00008I9K8/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1288192384&sr=8-5 Amazon has started selling these cards but their price is a little higher than the seller's price ... yesterday the Amazon card was over $14 but today it is $13.99, but that can change daily. Look on the right side for State Street Deals ... should be the first one listed for $13.95. Netgear Driver download: (It comes with a CD, so the driver is also probably on it. I just went to the Netgear site for the latest driver and it did work for me with Windows 98SE. WG511v2 Software Version 3.2 http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2569 ...
  2. Just a mention if there are some here using Windows 98SE with Proxomitron and the Sidki Configuration filter set ... he has released a new set of filters but with sad news. He will, I guess, be leaving the Proxomitron project. I had missed the announcement ... I knew a new config set was due at any time. I hope he will linger around but the project has taken a lot of his time. ---------------------------------- http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r24979425-Proxomitron-Sidki Proxomitron Sidki You may have seen the post from siljaline in the Security Product Vendors forum: »[Free] Sidki's Proxomitron filter set Oct 23 2010 There is some other news from Sidki at The Un-Official Proxomitron Forum: »prxbx.com/forums/showthread.php?···0&page=3 Yesterday: I am discontinuing work on Proxomitron now. However, this isn't necessarily the end of this project. There is an extensive documentation for developers, containing matching examples for every piece of code (well, almost), explanations of filter expressions, etc.. Thus, no information is lost, and someone else (should be plural) could continue right where i left. Some of this information and links aren't suitable for public entertainment, but JJoe has a copy. So, if sometime someone seriously wishes to continue with config development, just get in contact with him. Have fun! Sidki, Thanks for all your hard work !!! -------------------------------------- He will be sorely missed by many as his Proxomitron filter set was the best for Scott Lemmon's program, IMHO: http://www.proxomitron.info/ sidki configuration set: http://prxbx.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=1687 *** Just will ad ... Proxomitron was originally made for Windows 98 (SE) but I have read that people also using XP are using Proxomitron ... not 100% sure about that or Vista. ... found this info: System Requirements The Proxomitron was originally developed on a Pentium 120, and will work fine on such a system depending on your connection speed and the number and types of filters you use. Faster connections (like DSL and Cable) may require more CPU horsepower to filter. It should also work fine on Win 95,98,ME,NT,2000, and XP. About The Author: Scott R. Lemmon originally developed the Proxomitron for his own use. He then decided to release it to the public and made himself available to users via email and in several Proxomitron user-discussion groups. His support, like his program, was always free. With the release of Naoko 4.5, Scott discontinued all further development and support of his program and pulled the official home of Proxomitron off the Web. We respected his decision to move on and wished him all the best -- which is, after all, what he consistently gave to us. Sadly, one year later, Scott died -- but his brilliance of mind and spirit lives on. Simply put, Proxomitron is a reflection of its creator: To know Scott's program . . . is to know Scott Lemmon.
  3. hottext ... yes, should of thought of that but didn't at the time. Some days I'm at the top of my game and the other days I squeak by!
  4. Control/Alt + Delete Problem Solved ... I may have been given a solution to my problem and a simple fix ... to install the newer version of KernelEx I needed to reinstall the kernel32.dll ... for the other computers I extracted the kernel32.dll from my Windows 98SE cd ... but for the Dell when I was doing the install of the newer version of KernelEx, I did not have the Windows 98SE cd at hand and went on the internet to find a copy of the kernel32.dll. I thought I found one that looked OK but it must have been a Swedish version. They all say "kernel32.dll" I guess ... anyway, that now makes sense to me. A very knowledgeable person at the K-Meleon forum came up with the idea and a picture of what I am seeing. He had run into a similar problem with an dll needed for XP and it changed some things into Spanish on his computer. I am almost 100% sure this is what happened to that one computer. From K-Meleon forum: I just copied what he said about his download problem. "you downloaded the file, and replaced it in dos maybe.. but that kernel32 you got from there is swedish not english because that site have libraries in many languages and the sites never tell you the locale. It happened to me before when i downloaded an ie xp dll which i've maimed and later found out many of ie security prompts turning into spanish" So I learned about something I was not aware of.

  6. Problem solved with some help from another forum. I was going to delete all this but in case someone may be having the same problem, I have posted in message #3 the reason I probably had this happen. ------------------------------------------- Just a few days ago I discovered a problem on my one notebook computers ... I posted a message at the KernelEx message board yesterday, thinking there "might" be a connection with the fact that I had recently installed the newer version of KernelEx 4.5 RC 4 ... have had no replies and I can't be sure there is any connection with this problem and KernelEx. I am posting here also to see if anyone else might report the same problem on their computer or maybe someone could shed some light on what might be causing this to happen and a solution. I will just post what I posted at the KernelEx message board ... it goes into detail about something changing my Control/Alt + Delete window from English to another language ... perhaps German or I almost think it looks Swedish. The Dell computer was OK in early September since I did a Ghost backup at that time and the Control/Alt + Delete box is in English, after I reinstalled the backup ... I had the older KernelEx Final installed at that time. I still have to check my other computers to see what they look like. Anybody else have a Control/Alt + Delete box in a different language that should be English? ... thanks ---------------------------------- I have come across something that may have nothing to do with the new KernelEx 4.5 RC 4 version but I am posting here to see if this has happened to anyone else or if someone can shed some light on this. I have been using the new KEx 4.5 RC 4 for about 3 weeks now ... yesterday I noticed something very strange on one of my notebook computers ... I have 4 notebooks pretty much all set up the same with Windows 98SE. Last night on my Dell Latitude I went to press Control/Alt + Delete and all the wording was no longer in English ... it could be German or maybe Swedish. Everything in the box has changed but the programs to shut down are still in English and everything else on my computer is still English, I have found nothing else on my Dell computer that has changed from English. I have a Ghost backup made in early Sept of all 4 notebooks so I reinstalled the Dell backup and when I checked the Control/Alt + Delete box, everything was in English. I did a few updates from the Sept backup and everything was still English ... Then I took off the KEx Final 2 version that I now had on the Dell from the backup and installed the new KEx 4.5 RC 4. Unfortunately, I didn't check the Control/Alt + Delete right after that ... maybe 10 minutes later after maybe another update or two ... anyway, when I did check the Con/Alt + Delete area again the language had changed from English to the other language. As I said earlier, all my computers are pretty much set up the same so this morning I am on my NEC as I type this message. All my computers have the new KEx 4.5 RC 4 installed ... so when I went to check the Con/Alt + Delete on this computer ... it is OK, everything is in English as it should be. I didn't have time to check the other two computers. So now I am puzzled why English in just that one area got changed to another language and why only on the Dell computer and not the NEC. The Dell Ghost backup from Sept is OK but something changed it after I did the updates ... but I have the same updates on the NEC and nothing has changed. As I said earlier, this may not be related to KernelEx at all since it has only happened to the one computer. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ...

  8. Well I would say to try XMPlay 3.5.1 ... and put earphones on. I think it delivers the best sound out there. I haven't tried every player but the sound from XMPlay is really good ... with the custom equalizer and the plugins ... very simple to set up. I also recommend K-Meleon 1.5.4 for Win 98SE ... very fast but with KernelEx (latest version) I was able to get the new K-Meleon 1.6 to run on Win 98SE. It's not supposed to run on 98SE. I had help from siria and others at the K-Meleon forum and I also posted a message here relating my experience and links to the K-Meleon site. HTH ... 9. North of Watford ... I didn't have much luck with the FreeCommander 2009 version ... went back to the 2008 version. It seem to freeze up on my computer and I had to reboot. I didn't try anything with KernelEx, just decided to go back to FreeCommander 2008, it worked OK on my 98SE notebooks. I didn't do anything yet with the FTP drive. I will check out Q-Dir, never heard of it. thanks. ... maybe someone else will be of more help.
  10. MDGx ... as usual, thanks for the info and links. I thought I had the last FreeCommander version for Win 98SE (2008) but I see you have a version 2009.o2a ... also found a few other Windows Explorer replacements to try. Don't know how you do it and still have a life ... you are the best. May you live forever in good health.
  11. I posted a little about using the K-Meleon browser yesterday under another thread "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE". I decided to mention this browser here since some people, including myself, are having luck using Windows 98SE with the newer K-Meleon v1.6 preBeta browser. I will just repost what I wrote yesterday. All the links are there and maybe some will want to try this browser out, might meet all your needs since it is so easy to make it the way you want. They have an Extensions Manager for both NT and Windows 9x that makes it so easy to add Spell Checker and other plugins. The current version 1.5.4 is a very good browser and the newer one will probably be better and faster when completed ... as I mentioned yesterday, the newer version wasn't supposed to work with Win 98SE but with the newer KernelEx versions, that doesn't seem to be the case. It is still in development but it is looking good so far. --------------------------------------------- Posted Yesterday, 11:16 AM Why don't you give K-Meleon a shot. I went to this browser last Oct and haven't been sorry. It is said by many to be the fastest browser on the internet, not sure about that, but it's up there (Google: K-Meleon fastest browser). Good active friendly forum for help and you can customize K-Meleon to what you like ... the Klassic skin will make it look a little like IE6 ... or not ... there are several skins in the download and more that others have made. The current version is 1.54 ... they are working on a newer version 1.6 (BETA Stage) ... it works with the new Gekco engine v1.9 I think ... not suppose to work with Windows 98SE but with the new KernelEx (and help from the forum) I was able to get the new browser working with Win 98SE just over a week ago ... this is all good for us Win 98SE holdouts. Go into the General forum and you will see a question posted about getting Win 98SE to work with the new K-Meleon browser currently in development. Nothing wrong with the current version 1.5.4 ... super fast and look at all the plugins you can add ... it will take some time to read and get things figured out ... settings and all, but not too much time ... I got my v1.5.4 running perfect now and almost 100% with the new 1.6 Beta. I am very satisfied with this browser and the ability to make it exactly like I want it. http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/ Forums .... http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/ ----------------------------------------------

  13. I have run into a small problem with this new version that was not occurring before. I use XMPlay v3.5.1 on my Win 98SE notebooks. This has happen on three notebooks when I have installed KEx v4.5 RC 4. I use the WAModern skin (does not happen with the "default" skin) and after installing the new version of KernelEx, when I open XMPlay a Font warning box pops up first saying: Font warning: This skin uses font(s) that you do not have installed, so it will probably not look correct. ZADO (replaced with TAHOMA) TRANSISTOR (replaced with TAHOMA) PIX4 (replaced with SMALL FONTS) PROFONTWINDOWS (replaced with MS Cerf) ----------------------------------------------------- After I hit "OK" ... XMPlay will open and play OK. I found 3 of those "missing fonts" online for free downloads but cannot find the "PIX4" font anywhere. Now the Font warning box only pops up for that PIX4 font when I open XMPlay. ... I have had other versions of KernelEx installed with XMPlay with this WAModern skin and the Font warning box has never popped up till now. This may not be any fault with KernelEx, I don't know ... I have sent an e-mail to the WAModern skin developer ... Keltic Danor ... at XMPlay support but have had no reply to date. If someone here by chance knows him maybe you could give him a heads up on all this. ... Well, the font problem has been solved ... XMPlay support said the Fonts are in the WAModern source files at the XMPlay web site. I never thought about checking for source files ... so nothing wrong with KernelEx, just that this change happened with the newer version of KernelEx.
  14. OK Xeno86 ... all worked and I was finally able to install KernelEx 4.5 RC 1. Thanks so much for the assist ... I see the kernel32.bak file, in the KernelEx folder, that was missing before. I made an extra copy and will save it on a CD for the future in case. I know now what happened ... I have a hard drive cleaning tool that cleans out junk files, including "bak" files. I have put that Kernel32.bak file on the Protect List. Thanks again for your help.
  15. Thanks Xeno86 for the reply. Going to do everything right now.
  16. ... I don't why this didn't stay in the KernelEx 4.5 RC 1 message thread. I was there reading and wrote this message there. Can someone please move it to the KernelEx thread. I have had KernelEx 4.0 Final 2 installed on my notebook with Win 98SE with no problems. Yesterday I decided to try KernelEx 4.5 RC 1 ... wasn't sure if I had to uninstall the older version first (4.0 Final 2) but I did uninstall it and when I went to install 4.5 RC 1 I got this error message. ------------------------------------- Error: Failed to open backup file C:\windows\kernelex\kernel32.bak Possible causes: Previous version not uninstalled correctly or file has been deleted. Restore C:\windows\system\kernelex32.dll manually from install media ------------------------------------- I did a check in "Find Files or Folders" and kernelex.dll was in the system folder. I reinstalled ver 4.0 Final 2 with no problem. I then tried to install ver 4.5 RC 1 again over ver 4.0 Final 2 and got the same above error message. Can someone explain what it means and how to install ver 4.5 RC 1. thanks ...
  17. supem ... thanks for the v2.82 info and download. There was no info on the other post about what version of KillCopy they were talking about so I downloaded what the link took me to (v2.85) ... found out it didn't work. It said I needed ver 2.82 for Win 98SE. I wasn't able to find v2.82 anywhere when I hunted for it on Google. Thanks again. ... just finished installing KillCopy and trying it out. Very nice program ... it'll work for me. Pretty darn fast but I didn't have any really large files to play around with. I also like the fact that it doesn't seem to use any resources when it is idle ... when I check Memload, nothing shows so it must only use resources when it is actually running and nothing when it is just waiting around for something to do ... thanks again.
  18. ... just curious what version you are using or talking about. 19. After reading your post I decided I had better get a few extra spare mice for my Win 98SE notebooks. I found this very cheap USB Optical 3 Button wired mouse at Amazon. It is only $4.99 with free shipping included. It has a long cord to reach from the right side of your computer to the left side, as is the case for where my USB port is. Some of the reviews are negative, mostly people dropping the little critter ... but there are positive reviews also. I just got mine today and am using it now. Very satisfied for a spare and may use it everyday. I can see it breaking if dropped on a hard floor from some height. It is listed on the box to work with Win 98/2000/Me/NT/XP/Vista/Win7 ... I may get a couple extra at this price but so far it works very good. Had to slow it down a little in the Control Panel/Mouse folder. Of course, maybe it will only work for a week or two but I will use it heavy everyday next week. Decided to get that one also. However, when I ordered from just a few days ago the price was $3.99 + $3.99 shipping ... today the price is $9.35 + shipping (unless you get 3 for free shipping) ... pretty big price jump from Sept 8th. I am thinking it is very popular with more people ordering the thing with the good reviews. However, anyone that does buy from Amazon knows that the prices change constantly. It could drop back to the old price next week or tomorrow. They are the cheapest compared with the others. Recent Feedback: 5 out of 5: "this mouse is great! not only is it lightweight, but it's colorful! i get lots of compliments all the time!" Just wanted to add one last post about that $4.99 USB Optical mouse. I see Amazon has switched companies around on the link I posted earlier. The new company is still selling the mouse for $4.99 but also with a shipping charge now. If you look a little further down the page you will see a few other companies listed ... WOWparts is the company that was listed here last week. Their price is now $5.99 but still with free shipping and I see the one seller is still selling a $3.99 mouse with free shipping. That's the thing with Amazon, prices are always changing and the sellers also. Maybe no one is really interested but I thought I should clear a few things up. ... This is my last post (09-14) on this $4.99 USB Mouse ... I see Amazon has WOWparts as the main dealer again at the $4.99 price with free shipping. It's unreal how the prices and sellers change at Amazon every day or two.
  20. Thanks for the info on older versions of TeraCopy never working with Windows 98SE. I was going to hunt around for some older versions, won't bother to do so now. Haven't tried FirstCopy yet, downloaded it to test. I am already using 2xExplorer which I just found out from reading an older thread of MSFN from 2007 might actually do what TeraCopy and the others do. "Speed up file copying with TeraCopy" On page 2 (Post 21) deXter wrote: I use xplorer² as my system default file manager, and its file copying functions are *much* faster than windows's. It may not be as full featured as some of the dedicated file copying programs here, but you do have pause/resume, error recovery, queuing, priority, replacement, archiving and logging options. On PCs that don't have xplorer², I use XCOPY. Even on my own PC, whenever I'm working in the console, I just use XCOPY to transfer files/folders. It supports pause/resume, error recovery, archiving, some unique tree management (can replicate an entire folder structure without copying the files!) and advanced NTFS-related options. Definitely better than windows' copy, and hence worth a mention in this thread. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- If I remember, 2xExplorer is the earlier version of xplorer2. I didn't care for the newer version, xplorer2 but I did like 2xExplorer and it works with Windows 98SE. I haven't used it as much as I should, I tried a small transfer between the two panes yesterday and it did seem to be super fast. I may just get in the habit of using this more. But I will check some others out. TmEE ... if you find something that you like, please post the information. I'm interested in what you decide on and any info from anybody else also. There are also some other software names mentioned in that 2007 thread. *** I posted last January (2010) about 2xExplorer and xplorer2. 21. Never heard of TeraCopy so I went looking to see if it will work with Win 98SE. Just discovered that a new version came out today at Major Geeks, TeraCopy 2.2 Beta: Date: 2010-09-10 Size: 1.65 MB License: Freeware Requires: Win XP/2003/Vista/Windows7 http://majorgeeks.com/TeraCopy_d5674.html It no longer list Win 9x in the requirements. However, TeraCopy v2.12 is still available at CNET: Operating system: Windows 98/XP/Vista Date added: January 18, 2010 http://download.cnet.com/TeraCopy/3000-2248_4-10671835.html Just never know how long version 2.12 links will be available with a newer version just out. *** Just want to add, they list Win 98 working with v2.12. I have not tried the download yet, so I can't be 100% sure that is correct. *** I tried v2.12 with Win 98SE and it doesn't work for me, there are errors. Looks like the OS information is incorrect ... must be XP and Vista only.
  22. Latest version of Stinger v10.0.1.926 (McAfee Labs) (June 25,2010) still works with Windows 98SE ... it's listed as able to check for 3451 viruses, trojans and variants. Good little program to keep handy for a quick check. "Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files and scan performance optimizations." http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
  23. wsxedcrfv .... just came across all the discussion on CD/DVD burners ... thanks for the info on several models and the tigerdirect.com link. Never heard of them, they have quite a few models of burners at very good prices. However, I am more interested in getting an External USB CD/DVD burner for my Win 98SE notebooks. I have been looking for sometime at Amazon and Buy.com but these new slim DVD burners don't seem to get many good reviews since they get power from a the USB hookup. I want to get an "older" larger type that also has a power adapter. I'm reading that some people have sent those slim USB burners back since they didn't burn all that good. Can the same be said for an External burner that it should work with Win 98SE, even if nothing is listed in the description or on the box. Here's a burner I found at TigerBay .... http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5391204&CatId=483 What are your thoughts about these models with external power? You seem to be in the know on burners ... or thoughts or ideas from anyone else on External burners for Win 98SE. thanks ...
  24. Sp0iLedBrAt ... thanks for the info. I will check those links out. I did figure out my Windows Update problem ... I had to update IE 5 to IE 6 and I am downloading the updates now.
  25. I have decided to try Windows 2000 Pro on one of my computers. I have Windows 2000 Pro SP4 installed. I was just wondering if there was ever an "Unofficial" Windows 2000 update package made with all the updates after SP4 like there is for Windows 98SE? I have tried going to the Windows Update page but I keep getting an error. I have not been able to find an update package after the SP4 update. I'd like to download all the updates for Windows 2000 and burn them to a CD for the future. I know there are more updates since the Belarc Advisor is saying that I am missing quite a few updates. Thanks ...
