  1. rodalsa ... I have had this problem "msgsrv32(Not responding)" on and off for years. I can go for weeks and nothing happens then "msgsrv32(Not responding)" shows up for a few times. I've noticed it seems to mostly happen when I'm on the interent or at least I think so. I have searched on Google as to what "msgsrv32(Not responding)" exactly means ... I did notice many others also having the same problem and looking for answers. I'm glad you posted some information on this, I really didn't find much help to the problem. I guess you mean to "delete" when you say ... "I cleaned out all of the Win 98se components except the following." I'd be interested in knowing what the list of components were that you deleted, you say in excess of "14 components". It would also be of interest to me (maybe others also) to know what you discovered when you said ... "I also will not attempt to define exactly which one of or combination of them produced the problem." Unless all this is too lengthy to type it all out. Also, Tripredacus ... I'd be interested in knowing anything about what you did when you said ... "At that time I had actually gone about and debugged Win98 and what determined a clear-cut solution to msgsrv32 errors and problems." ... as you said it was a long time ago but if anything comes back about what you actually did, I'd like to know what triggers this to happen. As I said earlier, at least for me, it doesn't occur very often but when it does, it's a nuisance. ... thanks
  2. PROBLEMCHYLD ... thanks for that link, I searched through Google earlier, tried probably close to 20-25 links and came up empty. I will wait for herbalist to give his opinion conerning this "newer" version, he has the knowledge of SSM and the various versions. Thanks again ...
  3. I was wondering about that myself ... also with machines using a "user agent". I use Proxomitron and the Sidki filters. He has it fixed to tell web sites that the OS is XP SP3 ... I have thought about letting 98SE show up as my OS but then I will be forever running into messages about using an outdated browser. Several years ago I remember reading that Windows 98SE was still in use through out much of the world, outside of the US. I'm sure those stats must have changed by now to showing XP being used in greater numbers these days around the world.
  4. Interesting article ... and a good reply !!! ..... maybe some people who still have a 9x machine (98SE) gathering dust somewhere will be tempted to fire it up once again and relive some of the "good old days".
  5. No offense taken jaclaz ... I just never came across any mention of ReactOS. I spend ... and have spent ... a lot of time (years) searching around for old 9x software while links are still working, fooled around a little with Linux through the years and been trying to like XP (no luck there) ... never once did I see anything mentioning that new OS. That's why I'm at this forum ... thanks for the links, I read through the info.
  6. dencorso ... you locked the other topic (dealing with XP's future) so I couldn't comment on something you posted. I pick up or learn about many things from these discussions. I had never heard of ReactOS ... checked it out and I see it is a whole "new" operating system (OS) under development. Glad you mentioned it ... I may never use it but it looks interesting and I will follow it's development. The web site says it is still under "heavy development" ... "ReactOS 0.3.12 is still in under heavy development (alpha stage) and is not ready for everyday use." .... as I said I will watch it. May try it out later on.
  7. herbalist ... decided to check out the standalone flash player you mentioned but I'm not having much luck with the link ... keep getting "Sorry, this page is not available" ... when I Google the "adobe standalone flash player", I seem to be getting links to the browser flash plugin as a "complete standalone installer" ... trying to locate the standalone version for Win 98SE (v9.0.289.0) ... thought I'd see how it plays a flash video. If you have another link for that version, I'd like to hear from you, maybe others are interested also ... thanks again, good to hear from you.
  8. Thanks Foxbat for posting about Fortop FLV player. I have spent some time searching around for a good stand alone flash player (maybe 2 yrs) but the ones I have found always have "extra" baggage or things I don't want or they want to phone home or they are several MBs in size. Just wanted a simple small size player ... I like that player.
  9. submix8c ... thanks for the reply ... I solved my flv problem but I like the web site you supplied for a flash player. That site has all those portable software programs ... I will probably find some useful downloads there ... thanks.
  10. Ok ... I have been using KMPlayer for several years but for some reason it won't play flv files. I used to use VLC Media Player which played everything including flash files. However, after someone mentioned KMPlayer and I tried it for playing DVDs and other files, I liked it more than VLC ... but KMPlayer doesn't play flash files for me. I think someone else also mentioned that awhile back in a post somewhere that they had the same problem. So I have been hunting for a small free standalone flash player ... I downloaded two earlier today ... they were supposed to work with Windows 98SE, actually all Windows but they didn't work with my 98SE setup. I have downloaded others last year but wasn't satisfied with the video quality and such. I thought I'd post for some suggestions from what others might be using, just for flash videos. ... thanks ..... Well, I finally figured out my problem with KMPlayer not playing flv files ... the file itself was bad. I came up with another flv file and KMPlayer played it with no problem. I also installed an older version of VLC Media Player and it wouldn't play that one file also. I had that flv file on my hard drive since early last year to use to test flash players, no wonder none of them ever worked. ... dumb me and a false alarm ... KMPlayer works just fine for everything and probably most of the standalone players I tried also worked. Never gave a thought that the flv file might be bad.
  11. dencorso ... thanks for posting the info on Seagate hard drives and the hard drive info in general. After all these years with Windows 98SE my knowledge in certain areas is limited and I still am learning "new " things about the OS, which includes DOS and such. I certainly know more than I did 10 yrs ago from reading this forum and stumbling across information here and there. I came across that little Verbatim FAT32 tool that allowed me to have that new 500 GB USB drive work with Windows 98SE. I didn't know about the Harware Hangout Storage Media subforum, so I will be spending some time there from now on. Thanks for the info on the Ridgecrop utility ... also, thanks jaclaz for the Fat32Formatter info .... I have downloaded everything to save on a CD for the future, if needed. I also want to add about FreeAgent, since you mentioned it, a backup program was on the Seagate drive so I got rid of it ... I didn't think I really needed the program and I wanted the extra space for storage. thanks ... a good 2011 for all !
  12. Multibooter ... thanks for posting all your information on hard drives. It will probably be of more help to someone in "todays" world. I had previously bought two smaller USB hard drives about 5 yrs ago, both 80 GBs ... all I could afford at the time, anything larger up to 250 GB was really expensive, at that time ... so I settled on the 80 GB size. Always wanted a larger external hard drive, so earlier in the year I saw that Office Max had a Seagate 500 GB USB on sale and I also had a $10 off coupon so I thought I'd grab one .... it did not list Windows 98SE on the box, only 2000 through Vista, if I remember. I had hopes it would work anyway ... tried it out right away when I got got back home and nothing ... Win 98SE didn't "see it" ... of course I didn't understand any of this until I started searching Google and found other people with the same problem. Someone explained the problem in detail and suggested the Swiss Army Knife tool and someone else said they had used the Verbatim FAT32 software tool and was able to use their new hard drive with Win 98SE. So I tried that and Win 98SE was showing me a brand new 500 GB hard drive (Drive E) in just a few minutes. I am not having any problems so far ... I wasn't aware that dencorso has suggested 250GB FAT32 as the maximum partition size or that a Seagate drive might not be a good thing to buy. I thought Seagate was a good make at the time, could have researched all that on Google at the time I guess. The earlier 80 GB drives that I had bought in 2004 and 2005 were really heavy metal (well made) and both had an "on -off" switch, which I like ... the newer drives are much smaller, not heavy and no "on-off" switch but the the extra GBs are so much cheaper. So I have a 500 GB Ext hard drive for some extra storage unless you are saying I will not be able to use all that space for storage since I didn't partition it to 250 GB. Both you and M()zart mention PartitionMagic ... I had heard of it but had never used it and the mention on Google of the little Verbatim FAT32 tool sounded like a quick, easy solution to my problem in getting the new hard drive to work with Windows 98SE ... but all the information posted by you and M()zart will be helpful to others wanting to buy a newer USB external hard drive. I had been looking for almost a year for a larger ext drive but nothing was listed as working with 98SE anymore so I took a gamble on the Seagate drive and that somehow I could make it work. If I hadn't found that Verbatim FAT32 tool then I would have been on this forum asking for help. thanks ...
  13. .... I first posted this information back last March 2010 , thought I would repost it again for any new people that have recently bought a new USB drive that is NTFS and they would like to change it to FAT32. My last post is now 9 pages back into history. I checked to see if Verbatim still supplied the little free software program ... the link in the original post no longer works but I found the program under a new link. Verbatim FAT32 Tool: How to Reformat a Verbatim Hard Drive for Windows Verbatim provides a FAT32 format utility that eliminates the 32 GB partition limitation. http://www.verbatim.com/index/support.php?lang_id=1&cat=9&action=downloads&pid=5395&aid=197 Handy little FAT32 tool ... You don't have to have a Verbatim hard drive since mine was a 500 GB External Seagate drive. You will need an XP computer or some newer OS since the USB hard drive has to be "seen" to be changed. I went to a friend's XP computer and hooked the USB drive up and ran the FAT32 utility. It took about 20 seconds and it was now a USB FAT32 500 GB external hard drive. Tried it on my Win 98SE machine ... showing up as a 500 GB drive as Drive "E" ... it is also backward compatible to USB 1.1 ... I hooked it into a computer that is USB 2.0 (Windows 98SE) and then I hooked it into an older USB 1.1 hub that I still use. Not sure if this tool will work on every external drive, can only speak for the Seagate USB drive.
  14. Paul ... go to the Yahoo Group ... InternetByCellPhone@yahoogroups.com and look in the Files section ... they have older and newer Verizon files there.
  15. ... don't know if this will be of any help. I switched over to KMPlayer for DVDs, avi files and such. The last version listed to work with all 9x versions was KMPlayer 2.9.3.1428 ... I am using a newer version with KernelEx installed ... still "experimenting" with everything but seems to be OK so far. Anyway, KMPlayer 2.9.3.1428 might be worth looking at. KMPlayer 2.9.3.1428 Filename: kmp.exe File size: 13.47MB (14,122,018 bytes) Requirements: Windows (All Versions) Languages: en-US License: Freeware Date added: May 7, 2008 http://www.filehippo.com/download_kmplayer/tech/4120/ The KMPlayer is a versatile media player which can cover various types of container format such as VCD, DVD, AVI, MKV, Ogg Theora, OGM, 3GP, MPEG-1/2/4, WMV, RealMedia, and QuickTime among others. It handles a wide range of subtitles and allows you to capture audio, video, and screenshots in many ways. The player provides both internal and external filters with a fully controlled environment in terms of connections to other splitters, decoders, audio/video transform filters and renderers without grappling with the DirectShow merit system. Internal filters are not registered to user's system to keep it from being messed up with system filters. In December 2008 KMPlayer was bought by Pandora.tv, and continues to be made available as freeware. ... maybe not exactly what you are inquiring about.
  16. dencorso ... thanks for the information on those updates. I uninstalled KernelEx and put the updates on in the order that you said, reinstalled KernelEx and all is OK. I never would have figured all that out. ... thanks
  17. I have noticed on my Win 98SE setup that I now have two MS Hotfixes that need to be reinstalled. I have KernelEx 4.5 RC 5 installed. When I run Belarc Advisor it shows that UPD272137 and UPD320798 need to be reinstalled. So I did reinstall UPD272137 and had to reboot ... then a box pops up that KernelEx is no longer working and must be reinstalled after the reboot. I checked Belarc Advisor again and UPD272137 is now OK. So I delete KernelEX , reboot and reinstall KernelEx and the UPD272137 is no longer OK and must be reinstalled. I guess those two updates are affected by this newer version of KernelEx. I didn't notice this problem before with earlier versions of KernelEx. I also went back a few pages on the messages to see if anyone has already talked about these two updates, didn't see anything. Any ideas on this ... may just have to live those two updates being messed up. I noticed this also on my other notebook. thanks ...
  18. Message deleted ... was duplicate of #19
  19. erpdude8 ... yes, I've been using the new Beta for several days now. Everything seems to be working OK. The Spell Check plugin does not work as it does in KM v1.5.4 but that has already been reported ... it works for nobody in the new Beta version. Outside of that, I have had no problems so far. I didn't post anything here about the new Beta version since it seemed that only a few people expressed any interest in K-Meleon before and I figured you and the others probably knew about the new release. I'm following all the reports at the KM forum ... in case you didn't notice ... under the "General" thread, at the very top is a sticky message thread for the 1.6 Beta version. Have you tried it yet? ...
  20. ... been doing some searching around for a comparison on Windows Defrag and Norton Speed Disk ... this discussion dates back to 2007 .. some people seem to find the Windows Defrag does a better job than Speed Disk. Norton Speed Disk vs Windows Disk Defragmenter by dualcg - January 3, 2007 9:17 PM PST In Reply to: A Good Habit is Hard To Break: by kingdomofjones I have been battling a problem that Norton Techs don't seem to be able to help with. I run Windows Defrag, and follow up with Speed Disk. Speed disk always increases the amount of fragmentation. In fact, I can go into speed disk, run analyze, read the percentage fragmentation, run optimize, and end up with an increase in the amount of fragmentation. On the other hand, if I run Speed Disk first, Windows defgrag does a more complete job. Any suggestions? --------------------------- by caktus - January 4, 2007 12:27 PM PST In Reply to: Windows defrag vs. Speed Disk by dualcg Given my experiences and what you have mentioned, I would surely (and do) use the Windows tool. As far as Diskeeper And Perfect Disk, other than some unnecessary additional functions where the average home user is concerned, the only difference I have seen is that the Windows tool is much faster. Why spend money when it is best left in your pocket. --------------------------- by ronalds173 - January 9, 2007 5:29 PM PST In Reply to: Windows defrag vs. Speed Disk by dualcg I have noticed the same happening with my computer. I do know that once you defrag with NSW it takes a while before it finally determines how much, if any, is still fragmented. I have also found that I can sometimes get much better results by defraging twice consecutively with either Windows XP or NSW. My hard drive is formatted into two drives and, lately I have noticed that my second hard drive is becoming fragmented in a very short period of time. I have no idea why? I guess it doesn't really clear anything up ... I mentioned before that I use the ME Defrag with Windows 98SE and then I run Crackup to check on how much my HD is fragmented to know when to defrag again. Found this interesting article about different defrag software ... Defragmenting software to choose from http://www.finestdaily.com/how-to/defragmenting-software-to-choose-from.html ...
  21. I am using ver 2.36.1233. That was the last working version that was listed for Win 9x. I don't beleive you have to have KernelEx installed since it listed 9x and all the other Window platforms. The new 3x version no longer list 9x as working ... "Runs on Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, XP and 2000. Including both 32-bit and 64-bit versions." Whether the new 3x version will work with KernelEx installed, I don't know. I have KernelEx (latest) installed but I have decided to stop with the last 2.36.1233 version. Perhaps someone will verify that the new CCleaner 3x version will work with KernelEx installed, although I think I remember someone at the KernelEx thread saying it didn't work, not 100% sure. FileHippo ... CCleaner download ... ver 2.36.1233 on the right side. http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
  22. herbalist ... thanks for the mention of TestRun ... I never heard of it, I've downloaded a copy. Always interested in registry backup programs. thanks.
  23. I'm not sure how to tell what chip set I might have but I did a search on Google and it's probably the Marvel set. I actually have the WG511T from several years back. Just wanted a spare card or two for the future. I have been using the WG511v2 steady for about a month and it's been working great. I would have problems sometimes with the WG511T connecting but the WG511v2 card has been better on that score. It seems to pick up the same number of Wi-Fi spots as the WG511T card but I like the way the WG511v2 connects. It takes a few seconds longer but it seems to be a nearly 100% success for me. It also goes into the PCMCIA slot better than the WG511T. Sometimes the WG511T just didn't seem to sit right in the slot. Well, the extra cards weren't very expensive and I wanted some spares but at a cheap price. Not many WG511T cards for sale at Amazon anymore, if I remember. Thanks for the info on the different cards. I will try to find out what chip set is in the cards I bought. ...
  24. Well, I'm going to throw my 2 cents into all this, and that's all it's worth! I tried VoptXP v7.22 and it seemed OK for Windows 98SE. I use the ME Defrag on my 98SE systems which works very fast as jaclaz mentioned earlier about the ME Defrag being better for 98SE. I also use an old program called EndItAll to shut down most all running programs while Scandisk and Defrag run on my notebook. This is just out of left field ... not having much much info on VoptXP v7.22 since it is so old ... perhaps this is something it does also ... shut some running programs down so it can defrag the hard drive. You did say everything seemed OK after VoptXP has finished. All was well. Like I said ... just my 2 cents. I will continue to work with it some more. I did try something ... VoptXP seemed to be going slow but doing it's job so I stopped it ... went to the Win 98SE (ME) Defrag and it went fast through it's work. Went back to VoptXP and started it, 2 seconds it was done, nothing to defrag ... so it was apparently satisfied that the hard drive was already completely defragged by the Windows ME Defrag. Not much to go on but I have always thought the ME Defrag in Windows 98SE was acceptable, definitely much faster. However, I will try other defrag systems if they are mentioned in this thread. ...
  25. Fredledingue ... understand, I didn't pick up exactly what you were saying.
