  1. No, no. There are, or at least were, two different version of Firefox for Windows. The traditional version, which still exists, that runs as it always has and is accessed through the Start Menu, or the desktop environment in Windows 8.x, and the touchscreen version which runs as a "Metro" app. Mozilla is just killing the "Metro" version, which just means one less app available in the Windows 8 app store. (I won't get into the discussion about the changes in later versions of Firefox that "improved" its usability. ) I'm not sure, since I don't use any computer with Windows 8.x on it and wouldn't use "Metro" even if I did have a choice, but I'm not aware of how many "Metro" versions of other browsers there are available. Are there "Metro versions" of Chrome, Opera, Pale Moon, SlimBrowser, Maxthon, etc? With MS's current backtracking, it seems they are making a bigger emphasis on desktop apps in future versions of Windows and less on Metro ones. I have not even seen hints that MS is directly trying to make any browser unsupported. If they did, I'm sure there would be at least as big a backlash as they had with Windows 8. Rather, the obsolescence of older browsers seems to be driven by websites only using features available in newer browsers without leaving fallback mechanisms in place so that they can still work with browsers that don't have those capabilities. Cheers and Regards
  2. I think you misinterpreted what jaclaz said. The first part was just playful sarcasm: While the very next line confirms that 'Of course it is possible to shrink the Win7 installation disk by removing some files that are not necessary': Cheers and Regards
  3. Maybe use a different pop up blocker? Which one do you use, and with which browser? Cheers and Regards
  4. WOW! Your post is all over the place. I am really confused and can't follow what you are talking about. Referring to the numbers I added to your post in the quote above: 1) OK, you have XP Home SP3. Is it, was it, running correctly? 2) Why did you buy a recovery disc? Was there a problem? What exact recovery disc did you buy, and from where, and why did you not buy the XP Home SP3 version? 3) and 4) For a XP recovery disc to have two discs, I assume you bought the XP Media Center version? I'm not familiar with the way that HP supplies their recovery discs, so I could be wrong about this. If so, why are you trying to change versions? I'm not sure you can do it the way you seem to be trying to do. 5) I thought we were talking about XP? 6) I have no idea what this means. Why do you think this is true? by "EEPROM", do you mean BIOS? I'm not aware of a situation where the BIOS is either Windows 7 or non Windows 7? 7) Again, I thought we were talking about XP? 8) WHICH XP is "fine", and what "HP OEM" are you talking about? So is the "XP Home SP3" still installed on this machine and running correctly? And we need the info submix8c asked for: So is this your PC? - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?product=4075983&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en What HP software are you talking about? Do you have the drivers on a disc, or do you just mean all the hardware is working so the drivers must be OK on the installed system? We need a LOT of clarification. Your last post actually made things worse and more confusing, at least to me. Cheers and Regards
  5. If the code doesn't work in "aaa.cmd" form, then there is probably something wrong with the code. If it doesn't work in "run.exe" form then there is no way to know if there is a problem with the code, the conversion, or the phase of the moon. First things first. Confirm whether the code works in "aaa.cmd" form. DO NOT even try to convert to "run.exe" form until it is working correctly in "aaa.cmd" form. I know you say you do not need things like the check for x86x64, but try Yzöwl's code UNALTERED and let him help you get it working correctly before you start taking things out of it. As long as we are giving you one set of code and you are testing a different set, then there is no way to know where your problems are occurring. But then, if you don't want any help ... Cheers and Regards
  6. If you leave it in the "aaa.cmd" form, do you get the same error? Any error's thrown should indicate the line number and character position of the error. Cheers and Regards
  7. Please post the COMPLETE code for "run", and that of any routines that "run" calls, if appropriate, if you would like our further help. Cheers and Regards
  8. @MgmTest, once you get a solution that works for you, if you would please post the complete solution here for the benefit of others who might need to do a similar thing we would very much appreciate it. Cheers and Regarads
  9. This could be the best solution. I will look into it, thanks :-) Another benefit to this approach is that if there was something bad wrong with the drive, then this would put one more protection layer between the drive and the computer to make it less likely that it would affect the computer detrimentally. Good luck! Cheers and Regards
  10. You mean like this?: When the WYSIWYG mode is being a pain, try toggling into BBCode mode by clicking the little button in the top left of the edit box directly above the B (Bold) button. That will expose all of the BBCode for the post which then will just be text that is then sometimes easier to manipulate. It's a little bit of a pain but can be very handy. Cheers and Regards
  11. You can't right now. So please wait patiently. Cheers and Regards
  12. It's not just MS and Apple, Ubuntu's Unity is the same thing. I agree, it is a flawed idea. Then again, those of us hanging around here are far more prone to view OSes and Programs as tools that are used to accomplish a task. bpalone And the idea is apparently not limited to computers. Think about things like Dish, (satellite TV), where you can pause a recorded program on one TV and pick it up where you left off on another TV in another room. It all seems to be part of the concept of the "cloud" where all your information, content, settings, preferences, etc is saved at all times and your computer, phone, TV and whatever is merely a "portal" or "window" to that info. It doesn't matter what you use to get there, everything is right where you last put it and is accessed with the exact same controls. In an ideal world I can kind of see the appeal, IF all the hardware you are using to do the access is relatively the same size, AND all have essentially the same hardware controls, AND you are wanting to use the various hardware for the same purposes, AND you are not at all concerned about the security aspects of your content being able to be accessed anywhere by any hardware if you just have the right access codes. BUT if you have security concerns, OR you want to separate your work environment from your "play" environment, (games, TV, music, etc), OR you use vastly different software apps from media players to word processors to CAD/CAM or other detailed graphics software, OR you use vastly different hardware from a smartphone with a 4" screen to a tablet with a 10" screen to a laptop with a 16-18" screen to a desktop PC with a 19-30" screen to a TV with an 32-80" screen, then that absolute uniformity makes less and less sense, and is essentially impossible to achieve in an effective manner for all the tasks for which you could use the various hardware and software. You wouldn't want to write War and Peace or use CAD/CAM software or have the gang over to watch the football game on a smartphone, and you wouldn't want to carry around an 80" TV to make telephone calls. Just because the processors that run the various hardware could all be made to be able to accomplish the same various tasks doesn't mean they should. The hardware should match the task required and the interface should fit that "hardware + task". It just has to make sense. Cheers and Regards

I'm very glad there are "no such issues". While I'm sure that it is very possible to "create your own ...", and that you appreciate people who "contribute to projects", I'm also sure that you would get more people involved in the related projects and they would then be more able and likely to contribute if there were more predefined presets available such as the ones that jaclaz has suggested. They could be used by new users "as is" or as starting points for their own builds. But you might not want new users involved. You might want to only have users involved who already know how everything works and what they want and how to make it. If so, then it seems that your user group will remain relatively small and you will have to come up with new ideas and uses on your own. But that's just the way I see it as a noob non-user who loves the idea, but the initial learning curve looks pretty steep. Cheers and Regards
  14. You can't at all right now. Wait until it is generally available again, then re-ask your question. Cheers and Regards
  15. And hopefully the shutdown will be temporary? And all board content will remain once the board comes back? I hope your troubles are short lived. Cheers and Regards
  16. But be aware that smallest compressed size is not always the best. For example, according to this particular example of a mix of files, decompressing the files using PAQ8px took over SIX HOURS, while it took 7-Zip less than 8 seconds. (I was quite amazed) Cheers and Regards
  17. I'm sure you will get POS 2009 updates, but if the above is any indication, then you will probably not get other XP updates that MS believes do not apply to POS 2009. There might be ways to force them to be installed, but you would want to be sure they really apply. Cheers and Regards
  18. Well, since POS 2009 is not EOS, then it wouldn't get the update since it does not apply to POS 2009, right? Cheers and Regards
  19. Zip it up with the archiver of your choice, such as 7-Zip, then upload it to the online service of your choice, such as MediaFire, then post the link here. Cheers and Regards
  20. Wait a minute , you have to take the oath and learn about the secret hand-shake.... jaclaz Don't forget about the funny hat. Cheers and Regards
  21. Be aware that 7-Zip does not currently support the new WinRAR5 format, yet. So you still might need WinRAR if you receive any archives that were compressed in the WinRAR5 format. Cheers and Regards
  22. If anyone was going to do this, I would suggest starting off something like this: You can "collect" several posts at once using "MultiQuote". I don't know if there is a limit, but I'm sure it should at least handle 10 or more posts at once. Once you have the posts you "collected" in the edit box, then toggle into BBCode mode by clicking the little unnamed button in the top left of the edit box directly above the B ie "bold" button. That will expose all of the BBCode in the post and none of the addresses will be truncated anymore. Then you can copy all of the text in the edit box with CTRL-A - CTRL-C and paste it into the text editor of your choice. Continue this way until you have collected all the links in the thread. If you use an editor that can use regular expressions, then it should be fairly straight forward to parse out the links and sort them if you like. To verify the links, one way that comes to mind would be to turn them into bookmarks and use one of the various free software options that can verify bookmarks such as AM-Deadlink, which should work for Win2K and above. I think it can also verify links just in a text file, but I have only used it to verify bookmarks. At that point you should be left with a list of valid links. Then all you have to do (heh-heh) is determine if they are for the latest version that works with Win98 or not. For software whose links were no longer valid, I suppose you could try to find new links through the wayback machine or other means. Cheers and Regards
