No. Sorry!

Just a small correction, sorry! Xeno86's VCache actually sets it to 384 MiB. But accepts both bigger and smaller values, if set by adding a MaxFileCache entry into SYSTEM.INI. Not that it actually does make much difference, since all that really matters is being 512 MiB or smaller.

Well, the issue reported on Graphics Bug in Windows 7 after installing August 2017 Security Updates, and also by Woody, rather unsurprisingly, also occurs on XP SP3... It only affects those using more than one monitor, and req monitors to be setup in such a way that certain parts of the screen have negative screen positions. For example a secondary monitor setup to the left of the main monitor, or with a higher top border than the main monitor, or both (which is the case of one of my machines). Then the secondary monitor starts acting up. Solution? None, yet, for XP. Workaround: uninstall KB4035055. By doing that the latest win32k.sys (v. 5.1.2600.7312) will be replaced by v. 5.1.2600.7297 (from KB4025877). This issue only happens in the conditions described, everybody using a single monitor, and people using more than one monitor in unaffected spatial arrangementes may safely ignore it and keep the latest win32k,sys! HTH

Well, while I cannot deny your command of English is flawless when you talk about more mundane things, as for instance: ... when you get to your intended main subject you become much more difficult to undestand, as for instance: Now, this may be due to you having fine-honed your English by studying the I-Ching and Burroughs' works, particularly "The Ticket that Exploded" and "Naked Lunch", or to being involved in Production and Operations Management most of your life, so I really don't fault you for that. But I do have to observe that to cause a person or a thing to "become how it is" is yet another ontologically impossible™ task, because they already actually are what they must become.

Outlook Express 6 and IE6, AFAIK, cannot handle the newer 256-bit encoded (or whatever) certificates. Sorry!

Everybody who still wants to discuss DOS ought to know DOS ain't dead. Their traffic is almost (but not yet) nil. And there's a forum for DOS on reboot.pro, too. So, no. No new place to discuss DOS is actually needed.

Ain't FF 52.3.0 esr working right for you?

Of course, if one sets up 98SE without ACPI in a machine that's got no APM, it won't auto shut down at the end. But if one then sets 98SE to start with win.com (so, not automatically) one can use fdapm.com /acpioff just after win.com returns, in the autoexec.bat, so as to recover the auto shut down effect. This is na advanced procedure that may or may not work, and it should be tested in a case-by-case basis.
-
To have ACPI backwards compatible with APM is operationally indistinguishable from having independent implementations of both.

Well, since you were studying VCOND.VXD, isn't there a way to patch it so that it reacts more gracefully than throwing a BSoD upon the attempted launch of the 65th DOS Box? After all, when there is not enough memory to reach the 64th it just gives that well-behaved "There is not enough memory..." info window, which can then be dismissed by just clicking on the "OK" button.

Because it's an old standard, supposedly made obsolete by ACPI. Run fdapm.com /acpioff from true DOS. If the machine turns off, it has ACPI. fdapm, written and conceived by Eric Auer, is part of Free DOS. Version: 11 Sep 2009. Run fdapm.com /h for more info. fdapm.7z

Install without /p i parameters, get rid off ACPI later, possible or not?
dencorso replied to ruthan's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Both. You can setup windows to ignore both APM and ACPI. But if the motherboard has just ACPI, there's no way to use APM (newer motherboards may not have APM) and if the motherboard has just APM, there's no way to use ACPI. If the board has both, one may use either or none. -

But to true DOS (not a DOS Box) and run the attached program. If APM exists it'll shut down. Else it'll just give you a message but DOS will keep running. APMOFF.7z -

The maximum value VCache may assume is 800 MiB. From the number of DOS Boxes all that we can infer is how much was free when you started allocating them. Hence it means that, on your actual system there was 1 GiB - 32 MiB of the System Arena already in use (or about 97%).

You'll find the latest version at Alter's site's official UniATA page. Look for Version 0.46e3.

Yes. APM does that too. -
Yes. (Or, maybe, no). As you know, a 3TB external USB HDD also works fine on XP, due to that inferred 4k=>fake 512=>fake 4k sector thing. I mean that if the native XP drives aren't up to it, maybe UniATA, etc.
-
And then, there is UniATA, too...
-
No need at all. But since the space each DOS Box uses is only allocated when the DOS Box is created, finding how many one can open works like a canary to indicate how much precious free System Arena space still remains for the OS...
