Welcome to the board. How did you slipstream SP2?
-
Dumb question, but are you sure that you don't have spaces in in any of the foldernames?
-
Perhaps I should have clarified. "Windows Explorer" (the file manager of sorts) is explorer.exe. The shell is explorer.exe. By shell, I mean this is what you see on your monitor after you log into the machine. It's the same file being used for two different things on a default windows machine. BBLEAN or any other shell replacement will still use the "Windows Explorer" part of explorer.exe, unless you change it. Without a shell, you can't click, do or view anything, unless you have some sort of dos window to issue commands.

If you saw strange characters in control panel, then it is because hfcleanup (current fileset only from Mar 11th or so) isn't being parsed correctly. The old hfcleanup fileset left little to be desired. Delete any reduction files that Oleg2 made and use the ones posted on FDV's site.
-
If you're using the full blown hfcleanup, there is no task scheduler at all. My txtsetup doesn't have strange characters. It will work, but it won't be able to do the full cleaning that hfcleanup can do.

Thumbs down on HFSLIP_60318a-expert.CMD with HFCLEANUP. TC, I sent you some details on what parts you can mod and what parts you cant. The part that I explicitly said not to mod was modded.... this made the hfcleanup break.

With bblean, you still use explorer.exe to view files, but explorer.exe is not the shell. With the proper BBLEAN plugin and proper configuration, the systray will be there. It's manual tweaking to get it right, but it IS possible to have the systray (tested with two different systems). For some reason or another, the bblean plugin file required to have the systray isn't part of the main bblean package.

Tomcat76 is adding far more to this effort. He really deserves a round of applause.
-
Attach your drvindex.inf file too.
-
Once you DL bblean, there is a simple batch file installer and batch file for a remover. It's really easy to do.

This is what happens when people post & host untested Application Add On CAB files. According to the INI settings of the CDImage AAO, the files should be all in the system32 folder. No biggie there. Reading deeper, the file naming scheme is this CDImagex.cpi ->renamed to CDImageGUI.cpi CDImage.exe ->not renamed CDImage.cpl ->not renamed This doesn't work. Instead, the files should be this: CDImagex.cpi ->not renamed CDImage.exe ->renamed to CDImageGUI.exe CDImage.cpl ->not renamed

Can we take a look at your sourcess\i386\hfslipwu.inf file? Just attach it as a file and not like you did above. Thanks!

Icons on the desktop are an explorer.exe function. With bblean you need to configure your desktop icons yourself. Litestep was buggy for me. Squeeto - nope, no screenshots. I did that stuff a few months back. I'll see if I have my bblean config files so I can install it and attempt to post a pic here.

Yes, the ones in fdv's fileset.

TC, I understand that it is only the hfexpert\win folder. I guess it's a matter of how the user interprets hfcleanup and hfexpert, and which came first the chicken or the egg. I suppose you have a point though. However, it *may* break the special functionality of hfcleanup that I frequently use (maybe others too). Perhaps you should set up a poll and ask the community which they prefer. Ask if they want to add then remove -or- remove then add. Or in other words, which takes priority, hfexpert or hfcleanup. Right now, hfcleanup has precedence. Perhaps I assumed incorrectly when I first coded in hfcleanup and hfexpert (and built reduction files that work with it).

Tain, did you ever try fdv's files and doing hfexpert\win\firefox? Remove the few readme files with spaces in the filenames of the firefox folder. You'd be missing a shortcut though. I tried it once and I believe it worked.... and they said you could never slipstream firefox. They said you could never remove IE too. That would be cool by topping it off by slipstreaming an alternate shell. Nice sweet solution. [squeeto, sorry for hijacking]

No prob dude. The right-mouse click and search on the HFCLEANUP is your friend. Do you have the 3 modded dlls that I have in my fix folder? Perhaps those 3 are needed for hfcleanup to work properly? If they are, I'll mod the instructions.

TC, please undo. The way it worked before is far better. Let's say for instance you run a reducer for some file. The reducer also reduces some extra files too, in addition to installation infs (if there is one). There are too many cross-references and only asking for trouble. The only way around this would be to hardcode all the inter-relations like nlite. It's way too much work to implement and not worth the extra effort. Nlite is easier to use for reducing, and there is lots of support for it already. Bottom line, it's a catch 22 situation. Delete first and then add -or- add first and then delete. I chose the latter, because of all the installation infs and the interdependancies. For example with Tain's case. He ran the wordpad reducer, meaning he didn't want it. He also had it in the hfexpert. So either he wants it or he doesn't want it. See what I mean? Catch 22.

This will keep your system running nice and light by replacing the explorer shell. It uses far less resources, doesn't crash and can be configured tons of various ways. Personally, I like the multiple desktop feature.

Dumb questions. Q1. What year did NT come out? Q2. Is the purpose of this thread to bash an OS that was released 16 years ago by comparing it with today's OS's? On a sidenote, my old car worked great when I had it. Heck, it had tons more features than my bicycle. But my newer ride is better, more reliable and has more features than my old one. Should I bash my old car that I don't have anymore? Point is, technology is getting better. Change is good, well, most of the time anyway.

Search the HFSLIP forums for application replacement and slisptream codecs. Detailed instructions are there to do what you want to do (e.g. replace mplayer2 with mplayerc as well as slipstream 95% of the codecs that you'll need). Tain - Are you sure that you want to do the ffdshow codec? Isn't it a bit resource hungry. I tried it and wasn't too impressed.

Broken record mode on... hehe. Please post your error_report file so we can take a look.
-
I don't mean to sound like an a$$hole here, but the name HFEXPERT was coined meaning that you need to know more than the average person about the windows installation process. If you don't know about it, then blindly using it will cause failed installs. This is why the instructional webpage is hidden in FDV's site. Tomcat, do NOT take the liberty to change the hfcleanup/hfexpert routines. Period.

Tain - It seems that only a few of us use HFCLEANUP. Here's some tips for you. Don't jump the gun and use them all at once. And if you do use them all and it doesn't work out, figure out why they don't work and report which reducer is the offending one. Remember, I'm not really supporting this as it will take up time. Here's some tips for your problem at hand.... Explore to the HFCLEANUP folder, and set up the dual pane look. Do a right mouse click on the HFCLEANUP folder and search the reduction files for "NT5.CA" no quotes obviously. The ZZZ_CAT.rem file will be found. You now have two options: either delete the offending reduction file or put an underscore before NT5.CA line of the reducer. All of the reduction files can be opened with notepad. Remember to save it with the same extension and not a txt extension. For me I do not get any errors. Perhaps it is because I am using a modded setupapi.dl_, sfc.dl_ and sfcfiles.dl_. All of these are from FDVs fileset. I run with IE6 (no FDVFILES). The HFCLEANUP.ZIP reduction set provided really slims down IE6 to the bare bones and ***really*** speeds things up. My OS footprint is about 280 meg and all my software installs fine. Honestly, it outperforms my best nlite'd 2k by a longshot. Also, I do NOT use the "extra" HFCLEANUP zip files posted on FDVs site. They were only compiled for those who want them. In other words, they are remnants of Oleg2's reducers, slightly modded by me. Last note, remember, the more Z's the more aggressive it will remove files. This file has 3 Z's which makes it reduce some oddball files. Hope this helps.

Tain, It looks like you are building your own OS using HFEXPERT. hehe. I really can't answer your Q, but I think you have to be careful that you don't overwrite an existing file using the hfexpert. What I am thinking is that after the text mode copy, the sub-installation infs are moving files from the temp location to their final spot. My advice would be to use appreplacement if the file already exists in the source. I'll have to update the hfexpert page to identify this issue.
