Goober2 - Squeeto on the forum also has some issues with dialup stuff. I have noticed that you and him are both using FDVs fileset. Perhaps there is something with those files? I'm running 2k+ie6+dx9+massive hfcleanup. My dialup works fine. I would not be able to really troubleshoot, but if you need a regedit or two, I can help you out. But I'm not sure what is needed registrywise.

fraquar - I'd like to make a linux ground up too. PM me if you want to exchange some ideas on what you want to "slipsteam" or whatever it's called in the linux world. Maybe we can help each other out and learn together.

2K is great. Very lightweight and no "favors" are done for you that compromise your system. I get a kick out of the NLITE die-hards who strip enough out their XP so it looks like 2K. Why not just start with a lightweight OS to begin with? Honestly, the only thing I like about XP is the "cleartext" for the LCD monitors. Other than that, it's not my cup of tea. A little prob I have with XP is that when doing serious multitasking, and if you want to delete a folder, the OS won't let you. So you close each application one at a time until nothing is running at all. Even after doing that, you still can't delete that folder. Only after rebooting can you delete it. This isn't a one time occurance. It happens quite frequently for me. Well, another issue I have is the crashing shell. It starts up again, but all my systray stuff is gone. I don't know about the rest of the computing community, but I kind of like having a shell that doesn't crash. The only time I had 2k BSOD me was when my hard drive bit the dust. I had more BSODs with XP, even with functional hard drives.

I have read that there were some issues with xpize with media player compatibility. They may be fixed, but I just wanted to caution the users. If there are any issues with xpize, please report them to the proper forum. TC - Please state this when updating the main page when the beta gets out of beta phase. On a sidenote, I tested xpize on 2k. It seems to work. Not sure if there are any issues yet. It's funny seeing an XP boot up screen on a 2k box.

That's strange. It's on my 2k w/sp4.

Sure. I know of two options: HFSLIP and NLITE.
-
Please remember that HFSLIP is for HOME & PERSONAL use only, not for your company's benefit. We didn't write HFSLIP to save your company money.
-
That means that you removed the findstr.exe the winnt\system32 folder. In other words, it should be there.
-
It depends on the service. Some are in the hives, some are inside INFs and some are a combo of hives and infs.

dziubek - can you see what happens when you run without the application add-ons? Also, it's a bit hard to see some of those screenshots. They are too small. Or better yet, on your item number 2, what does it say (translated to english please). Thanks

Can we backtrack for a second? You install a non-hfslip'd 2k, and then install ie6 and then the two updates. After doing that, your OE doesn't work? This doesn't sound like it's an hfslip related issue then. Are you sure you are applying the correct OE hotfixes?

I tried to make the current reduction set home-network friendly. Some applications depend on certain built in windows functions, the folks over at Nlite have nice description on what to keep for various applications. For me, I use the current set posted and all my applications run fine. Your mileage may vary.

Vectorlinux seems to be my favorite distro so far. It comes pre-tweaked for speed and has with 97% of the applicatins that I use. For alternate versions of office & openoffice that run on Linux, there is also KOffice.

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2006/04/04/mi...nuke-your-drive Is it time to convert over to linux yet? I think it's right around the corner for me.

If you NLITEd out your 16bit subsystem, then you *will* be SOL with hfslip.
-
Look more carefully. One is KB887472 and the other is KB887742.
-
One step at a time. Get your hfslip structure working properly first.
-
Saug, you'll need to type in A, B or C for the compression type to use HFCLEANUP. I run with all those hfcleanup.zip reducers for my 2k. They work great.
-
Have you tried the latest hfslip with option A? Also, are you sure that your source folder is OK? In other words, make an ISO out of the files in your source folder? There is many occurances where you could get a bad copy. If you have a bad source folder, then the sourcess folder won't be good either. It's up to you to test that. As far as I know, you are the only person reporting this issue. Are you sure you didn't kill your 16bit subsystem? Is the machine you are working with installed via an NLITEd source?
-
Actually non-hfslip related. What is the difference between the msft expand and this other expand? Why not just use the msft one? What does the other expand do that the msft version can't?
-
Stupid Q, but what is the purpose/benefit of the "other" expand file?
-
Stupid comment about the makecab of the error_report posting/cabbing. Without a hfnetchk run, which you must run on the sourcess, the authors really have no idea on what's wrong. Besides, 9x out of 10, noobs don't post the error report anyway (or read any of the online literature for that matter). Sorry to sound harsh. Another stupid comment on the makecab'd error_report. The first lines of the txt file tells the user what to do with the file. If it's cabbed up, the user may think that the cab file is just an artifact of running the script and they won't do what it says. Then they'll still come onto the board and not attach anything. SuperM, Tain sees the purpose of the error_report. It can be named to other things. Is this a good compromise? One a sidenote, please remember that HFSLIP is for home use only. You see this everytime you run HFSLIP.
-
The purpose of the error_report in the sourcess is so you could refer to the file after the cd is burned. Does this file take up too much space? hehe Perhaps we could make hfslip look at an answer file to see whether or not to include the error_report. If you have special cmds or batches that you think would be beneficial to add to hfslip, why not just share your idea and ask us to add it? We appreciate inputs.

saug - If you are running 2k with FDV's fileset, you will be prompted if you want to filter out FDV's INF files. If you select YES, then the reducers filter them. If you select no, then FDVs INF files will be copied over at the end. If you are slipstreaming IE6 and running hfcleanup, IE.INF (aka IN.IN_) is filtered along with a host of other INF files. I think the reducers may have filtered a bit too much. I can't copy/paste files that are located on the network. I can modify files on a network, but I cannot cut them out of one folder and place in another. Strange.
