  1. Hey Mimo. You have Windows Genuine "Annoyance" Notifications listed under "Required to access Windows Update". It isn't needed (and concerning the controversal nature of this update, the less people accidentally install the update, the better).
  2. Also noticed a minor typo in that step. You mention versions 1.6 and 1.3, when they are actually supposed to be versions 1.16 and 1.13 (though looking at the xCHM download page, it isn't that much of a problem, since there are no versions 1.3/1.6 for Windows, so I would hope people would put two and two together).
  3. I've discovered a possible better alternative to HFNETCHK called WuInstall that doesn't seem to require Windows Update-related services. Has anybody tried it already?
  4. Good thing you changed your mind. We've got the best lawyers on our side.
  5. I had a feeling it may be that. Crap, those context additions were useful. Oh well.
  6. Depends on how you want to run the NT4 Explorer in Windows. At the time of that topic, I was trying to run the NT4 Explorer as a program within the XP Explorer shell, so I could use it as a file manager rather then a complete shell replacement. To do that, I just renamed and hex-edited the NT4 explorer.exe and shell32.dll files than ran that Explorer while running XP's Explorer. However, it sounds like you want to completely replace the shell with another. In that case, check this thread out as well. This can be done (though with a lot of difficulty). I have a screenshot I got a long time ago that clearly showed the NT4 shell running in XP.
  7. Well then, it isn't the mouse. Tried a PS/2 mouse and the same thing happened. I'm still thinking some sort of registry error.
  8. I've finally discovered the source of the glitch, and it isn't the graphics card, considering that every Windows computer I have used seems to have the same problem. This glitch occurs when you turn off "Show Windows Contents While Dragging": With it on, there is no icon distortion when dragging: With it off, there is icon distortion when dragging: I tried this switch on a newer, faster, and more graphics-capable machine, and the same thing happened. So this appears to be a bug in Windows. I don't know how you would fix it; anybody else have any ideas?
  9. Doesn't seem to be the case here. My typing doesn't come out as all capitals, and pressing F4 (which would theoretically cause a CTRL-F4 if the button was stuck) did nothing. More likely to be the case. How can I check the drivers for corruption?
  10. Is there anyway to remove the Address title in the Address bar? When dealing with other Windows toolbars, such as the QuickLaunch bar, the titles are identical in size and font, and you can turn them off:
  11. Good choice. KB905474 doesn't do anything except phone home to Microsoft with your hardware information. It is not needed for Windows Update or any Windows function whatsoever. It should be avoided. YOU DO NOT NEED IT.
  12. Are you still working on this? I got this cherry from the free section of my local public library () and I wanted to give this shell swap a try:
  13. I hope to as soon as next week. My schedule has been increasingly busy of late. Perhaps, but I think the GUI would still be unusable, since it looks and acts suspiciously like a webpage... I'll post the requirements of MBSA 2.0.1 as soon as I have them (of course MS includes them with the program AFTER you install them, not on the web-page). Unfortunately, it seems that the XML files used are completely different from the mssecure.cab. I actually found the CAB files (with appropriate .XML files in them) for MBSA 2.0.1. As for whether or not the engine files would work with MBSA 2.0.1, well, its possible. Are you referring to the command line version of MBSA or are you refering to HFNETCHK? If it is MBSA, do you have WU3 installed? If it is HFNETCHK, then that makes sense. But I am afraid that the XML file may be becoming increasing crippled: ---------------------------- * WINDOWS XP SP3 Information All necessary hotfixes have been applied. * INTERNET EXPLORER 6 SP3 Information There are no entries for Internet Explorer 6 SP3 in the XML file. If HFNETCHK isn't viable, then my other idea would be to use your Windows 2000 hotfix list as some sort of source file (like mssecure.xml) for a new WU-alternatve, since it is frequently updated and maintained (even moreso than mssecure.xml it seems ), and it has non-essential updates listed as well.
  14. I was referring more in relation to FDV's fileset. Unfortunately no. The posts I've seen pretty much give you the "you should upgrade" routine. I would if it didn't have a billion dependencies, including IE. It actually does come with a command line version... with the same requirements as the GUI. :angrym: The reason I ask about HFNETCHK is that I'm trying to figure out an WU alternative for FDV to maybe include in his fileset since he decided not to add WU Agent 3 compatibility (which is fine IMAO; my experiences with it have never been positive). If I could make a easy frontend for HFNETCHK for picky users, that would be great, but that depends on whether or not HFNETCHK is viable for the future, in which case a completely new implementation would have to created.
  15. I noticed that the MSSECURE.XML file used by HFNETCHK (in combination with Tomcat's HFNETCHK.CMD and WGET) are dated August 11 2009, so they are fairly recent. Considering that the support of those XML files was apparently ending in 2007, is HFNETCHK still a viable way to check for new updates, other than the the slow MS RSS feeds or the excellent lists on FDV's website?
  16. I noticed that you removed the suggestion of using Windows Update Agent 3 on many pages of your site. Is it no longer a WU solution? Which is fine anyway. I usually just use the MS Security RSS feeds.
  17. Sumatra PDF supports CHM now?
  18. Then don't have your CHM files in a path or with a name with those characters. Or, if you don't mind using up 10 mb (!) of space, you could KchmViewer instead. If you have Firefox, you can use this addon as well.
  19. BUMP Any suggestions? I'm pretty sure I've seen a fix for "Explorer not opening things properly", but I can't remember where. I did find a fix for "Explorer open search instead of folder", but the fix was useless on my system, since the registry key already matched the fix.
  20. I tested the mouse and keyboard and they seem fine. I think it may be a registry or COM issue.
  21. When performing certain actions in Windows Explorer, such as opening Start Menu folders from the Start Menu (not the Start Menu folder), a "Move Items" window pops up. Cancelling that brings up a Copy Items windows, and cancelling that finally opens the folder. This happens with other files/folders with different Explorer actions, such as hitting the edit button in Windows Picture and Fax viewer. How do I correct this? I am running Windows XP SP3.
  22. Yeah. I misunderstand what you wrote. Sorry. I thought you were saying that the WBEM dlls were standard dlls.
  23. WBEM or "Web Based Enterprise Management" is removed by Vorck's fileset. That's probably why it isn't working.
  24. I would stay away from version 1.16 for now, however. When I tried it, it was very unstable and crashed frequently. Version 1.13 works just fine.
  25. Which are slow, cumbersome, and not worth the effort. Is this as obvious as it sounds? I have computers with more than one CD Drive. Otherwise, I also agree with its removal. Every kilobyte counts.
