  1. O, I checked the free version of the software you gave me, and it's missing a lot of features like drag and drop. So there goes that option I still want to try replacing it with the 98 search. My brother did it before, I remeber. What files control the search utility in XP and 98SE? If the two are incompatible, is it possible to use the search from NT 4 perhaps?
  2. I believe that this icon doesn't exist. When you assign a file type to open with a certain program manually (aka you say "open with" and then choose the "always open with this program" option), it automatically generates an icon by taking the paper part and putting the program icon in the middle.
  3. Is there some way to remove the favourites menu in explorer windows?
  4. Or use Wax. It's free and does pretty much what WMM2 does but more.
  5. For the meantime, you could use an alternative shell, like Liteshell or LiteStep, and at least the computer will be usuable. Heck, you could even use Program Manager, though I wouldn't recommend it because it sucks as a user interface. One possible way to temp-fix this is to install 98lite and use the shell switcher to switch to the 95 shell. You will need a 95 CD or the 95 shell files however. Formatting is probably the best way to fix it.
  6. So what kind of software is there available? Better yet, could I replace the XP search with the one from 98? (I have a 98SE CD)
  7. You could try the shareware "LCARS-Terminal": http://www.lcars-terminal.net/
  8. You really don't have to go through all this trouble. To get WMM from WUPG98, run the installer so that it extracts the nessesary files to a folder on the computer, but cancel setup before it actually begins to install (the part when it swtichs to DOS command prompts). Then, go to the folder where the files were extracted, find the WMM folder, and copy it to your computer. Of course, you can always you free Video Editing software, like ZS4, Avid Free DV, VirtualDub, and plenty others. I actually have a list of urls of windows movie maker replacements, so I could post that if you wanted.
  9. Well, I want to rid of IE search altogether, and if I have to use other software, so be it. The reason I ask is because I remeber my brother was once able to replace the search with the 98-style one, and I never found out how he did it.
  10. I am running Windows XP SP2 on my "family" computer, and I wondered if there was a way to replace the standard Internet Explorer-based search utility with a Windows 98SE style one?
  11. But Windows 98 has no trouble shutting off by itself!
  12. Here is the problem: on Windows 98 SE on the same computer, when I shut down properly, the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message doesn't show up; it automatically shuts down on it's own. Yet with Windows 2000 on the same computer, the computer doesn't automatically shut down, and instead the message appears. How can I fix this?
  13. As a curiousity. Can you answer my question, please?
  14. But I have a MS-DOS 7.1 standalone CD. Do I still need the update?
  15. So basically, I want to install MS-DOS 7.1 with Windows 3.11 so I can access fat32. I've heard that there is some things you have to do in order to make MS-DOS 7.1 and Windows 3.11 work properly together. What exactly do I have to do?
  16. thank you, you have been very informative. One last question, does the NT4 NTFS support 9 gb HDs?
  17. Yes, I do have a licence because the friend who I got the NT files from did not have NT4 installed on any computer. Secondly, the FAT32 thing does makes sense, but it also doesn't. I remember a while back (a year or so) that we did the same thing on an old laptop with 98, and it worked fine. But if it is the FAT32, isn't there an old FDISK that would allow me to create a FAT16 partition?
  18. Sorry, I'll try to be more specific. I have been using WINNT.exe, cause I don't have that actual CD, I just copied the I386 folder from a friend's NT CD and put it on my hard drive. It copies files to the hard drive under a temporary folder. The Hard Drive is identified by BIOS as a "ST310212A", and from within Windows 98 as a "Generic IDE Disk Type47". SCSI controller is a D347PRT SCSI Controller, and is identified by Windows NT Setup as a generic SCSI controller, so I don't think that is the problem. The hard drive has a capacity of 9.52 GB. To install Windows NT, I ran the WINNT.EXE file from within Windows 98. The program was successful in copying the files to the 3 floppy disks, as well as copying the nessessary files to the Hard Drive. I then restarted and booted off the Boot Disk WINNT.EXE has made, and then followed the steps. After a few steps, it told me it couldn't locate the MS-DOS portion of setup.
  19. Ok, I finally understand the problem I've been having with installing WinNT. The problem isn't the SCSI Driver; it detects it no problem (I was just misreading). The problem is that setup gives me an error message that says that it "cannot detect the MS-DOS portion of setup on your hard drive". This is wrong though, because it clearly installed needed files on the HD. So what is the prob?
  20. I read somewhere that this actually exists. If so, where can I get it?
  21. Ok, we found this installer maker and we're going to make an installer to install the files.
  22. well I'm home right now, I'll tell you how it went tommorow *fingers crossed
