  1. I hate to drag this further into the dirt, but I found this interesting tidbit on the license for MESS (Multi Emulator Super System): "MESS is distributed under the same license as MAME. While MESS is available at no cost, including its source code, it is not open-source software or free software because commercial use and redistribution are prohibited. That is, its license does not meet the conditions of the Open Source Definition, nor is it "free software" as defined by the Free Software Foundation." Just my two cents.
  2. Just ignore it. It isn't a critical or even useful update.
  3. Good timing of this release. I've discovered my friend has an original Windows 2000 (no service pack whatsoever) cd that I can source from. About help files, though, I have found that xCHM for Windows does a good job viewing them, and it can easily be set as the default help viewer. I know you removed the help directory with this fileset, but still.
  4. That's what I thought. Is there any easy way to extract it from the hotfix INF?
  5. I would like to repeat once again that this update is not required for Windows Update/Microsoft Update to function. Wikipedia has summary of what this update is and it's purpose. How do I know this update isn't required? Because I can still use Windows Update just fine. Furthermore, once you install this update, it cannot be uninstalled. So I urge once again to ignore this update. If you don't want it to show up on Windows Update, do the following: 1. Open Windows Update and deselect Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications. 2. Select the option to not show this update. That's it! If you use Automatic Updates, do the exact same thing when Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is shown.
  6. Grape Crush, because that's the only one I know By the way, what prompted this?
  7. Today, I decided I would make a FDV'd Windows 2000 install, but barely into the tutorial I have hit a snag: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Full (or "Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Network Install for IT Professionals") has completely disapeared. And no, I'm not refering to the MS quirk that FDV mentioned that the download site is changed every week. I mean, the download has completely disapeared. It still appears on Google and Microsoft.com's own search, but the link provided goes no where, and the direct link to the executive also doesn't work. Anywhere else "official" where to get it?
  8. First off, if you don't want Windows Update to nag you about, then just tell Windows Update to ignore it. It is that simple. Secondly, it does launch even your copy is valid. Namely, it notoriously phones home to Microsoft, sending them certain data about your computer. The newest version does this every two weeks. And let's not forget: Period.
  9. Wrong thread perhaps?
  10. Following up, I have discovered that opening folder from the start menu or from the "Run" dialog successfully open a new Explorer process, but opening folders on the desktop does not. My original question stands though.
  11. I cannot get Explorer.exe to "Launch folder windows in seperate processes". The option is enabled in Folder Options and the registry value is set to "1", but even with a folder window open, there is still only 1 explorer.exe process running. The only I can get Explorer.exe to run more than once is to open Explorer.exe itself, via a shortcut, etc. How can I fix this?

    new fileset

I was refering to the earlier screenshots you took in this thread of an install you did: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=at...st&id=23919 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=at...st&id=23918 ,where you can see the Favourites menu is still present. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a 98/Me/2000 machine right now, but I can tell you that in addition to removing the Favourites menu it also turns off the Quick Launch bar, JPEG/BMP/HTML wall paper, active desktop (along with the tab in "Display Properties"), removes the option to turn on Web menu, and blanks out the option to turn on web view in Folder Options. XP has a similar option in the Group Policy Editor, though, as I think I told you before, this causes the Desktop tab in Display Properties to vanish for no reason. It may be possible to fix this by copying the Display Properties control panel applet from 2000 to XP (or maybe even ReactOS) and using that instead, but I never tried that.

Interesting, but didn't you already make an XP IE removal pack for some "HFSLIP folder on steroids"? BTW, I really like the redesign of you site and your hotfix lists. There is an option in TweakUI 1.33 under the Internet Explorer Tab called "Turn off Shell Enhancements", that turns off the web-fluff included with 98/Me/2000, including the Favorites menu. And how did you remove the Favourites menu from the screenshot?:

Yeah, that's what I meant. I know you can remove the Favorites menu with TweakUI, but it would be nice if it was removed out of the box. Ah yes. Nathan Lineback offers something similar on his website, called "ThrobOff". I wonder if Lineback and "OS2Fan2" are the same person?

Now I'm confused again, but because of something else. How the Favorites menu, the Quick Launch bar, and the Windows throbber still present? I thought your fileset removed all IE intergration FDV. In this shot from FDV's website, the Favorites menu is removed.

Oh, ok. Thanks for clearing that up.

    new fileset

I'm confused by some of the above posts. FDV clearly states why Task Scheduler is removed, yet it seems that some people want to add it back by modifying the INF files that are used. How is this a bug, and if I'm totally off-base, please tell me then disregard this post.
  18. Well, apparently my idea is obsolete: Still, if I read this correctly, all this does is restore Automatic Updates (bleeeeeeeh). I'd rather to my updates manually. Is my assumption correct?
  19. Why are people downloading this? You don't need it!! There are two WGA updates. One allows you to access Windows Update (KB892130). WGAN on the other hand does not give you ANY BENEFIT OR BUG FIX WHATSOEVER. All it does is launch yet another system process which gives MS info on your computer at startup. I highly recommend to avoid this update.
  20. Of course I know that. Ah, I see. Thanks you for explaining. So I suppose combining my suggestion with TommyP's already existing solution is the logical course of action.
  21. Ok, makes sense. Can you just clear up a few things about HFSLIP for me? I originally though that HFSLIP made a slipstreamed Windows CD like nLite, and didn't actually the setup process and such. However, the HFSLIP website mentioned a HFSLIP command window that pops up during Windows setup. So does HFSLIP make it so when you actually install Windows, HFSLIP-related folders are made as part of the setup process. You mentioned keeping "your HF folder up to snuff"; is that automatically created with a slipstreamed Windows install for example?
  22. But the post you gave me mentioned WGET: And this "CAB file" you mention, is it some sort of summary of all MS updates? And does this utility take into account that some of the updates are imcompatible with FDV'd 2000? That's why I wanted to make a custom update specifically from FDV'd installs, so it only chooses the updates that work with these types of installs. But does this become a part of the slipstreamed image or is it just placed in the HFSLP folder?
  23. I've been thinking about FDV'd Windows 2000, and how many unimaginative people complain about the lack of Windows Update and how they think they can't install another update. So to shut these people up, I've been thinking of a simple, batch-based alternative to WU, which uses the Windows port of WGET to download the updates. I could use M$'s RSS security bullentin feeds to get the latest update information. A question though: Does HFSLP leave any sort of log that say what hotfixes, etc, it slipstreamed?
  24. You may also want to try Fred Vorck's tutorial tomake a faster 2000 install.
  25. There is a problem in my Display Properties control applet, specifically under the "Advanced Appearance" Option under the "Appearance" tab: As you can see, the "Selected" menu item does not reflect the settings that I actually set. It's supposed to show you what your setting are supposed to look like. Any ideas? Thanks.
