  1. Most motherboards, even Nehalem ones, still have IDE ports. Check the manual.
  2. You want to access a hidden system partition. Google it. Its been done before.
  3. Yeah, pretty much any decent wiping app will do. Make sure it can do passes with random data. More passes are better. 2 passes are more than enough. How are you doing the wiping? It might be faster to take out the drives and do the wiping an one PC with alot of ports.
  4. Our MS rep said all future OS will be 64bit only. But they are just spokesmen really, MS might change their mind and not even tell those guys until it comes out. That is the case, but Windows 7 isn't really a new OS. Its a really well polished Vista at best, and its supposed to replace it. I'm basing this on the 32bit & 64bit Betas previewed at PDC2008.
  5. Good point. OP, forget about what I said for the moment. Do the following: Go to 'Device Manager'. Then go to the 'Computer' heading. What does it say? ACPI-based PC, Standard PC or MPS-based PC? Let us know, and we'll go from here.
  6. Good question. I go to sound properties and enable headphone as main device instead of speakers.
  7. Go to the Intel site and download the latest drivers. Chipset also.
  8. Sounds like ye old windows 98 days. Check to make sure ACPI is enabled in the BIOS.
  9. Then it should have been easy. Glad it worked.
  10. Yeah, that sounds pretty barebone. They include the IGP, and forget about the useful stuff like SATA ports. Maybe its all the southbridge can support.
  11. Find yourself a computer. Go to Google.com and search for "nlite". Heard of a computer? You sure you can find one? You need to get into the BIOS. Try pressing repeatedly F2, F5, F12, or DEL immediately when you boot up your PC. This should be done during the POST, way before you see the XP loading screen. Quit making up crap. You don't know how to use your computer. Its not Vista at fault.
  12. Its going to perform well relative to Barcelona and clock better. Pricing is anyone's guess. I've also been looking through the roadmaps and they have some crazy stuff planned. 6-core & 12-core CPUs. You're buying a motherboard with onboard video. Its just supposed to get the job done. Its better than anything by Intel & nVidia though. Yeah eSATA is great. I haven't found many drives that support this though. USB3 should be much better. Its too bad firewire wasn't adopted by the market. It had real potential.
  13. AMD is coming out with a new chipset to replace the 7-series. SB800 based. They might change the layout. BTW firewire is good for external drives and professional audio/video equipment.
  14. Nice. I've got to try that one. I just put Vista in Test Mode to run unsigned drivers. It doesn't do anything else except put a watermark on my background.
  15. Well there's your problem. Wanna buy a bridge? Real suggestions: 1. Inflate your tires to reduce rolling resistance. You can go a little over suggested pressures. 2. Clean out your car. Too much crap in the back is adding to the weight. 3. Easy on the accelerator. You waste the most fuel accelerating. Coast when you can, avoid accelerating into a stop, or a red light. In stop&go traffic, 'smooth' out your speed. The more fluid and smooth your speed, the better. Reduce stop&go as much as possible. 4. Air filter, oil, spark plugs... etc. 5. Its also good to drive the engine hard on occasion. This dislodges buildup of carbon deposits on the inside. 6. Drive slower. Aerodynamics kill your mileage. It takes 4x more energy to go 2x faster. A good sweet spot is 50-60mph for most cars. Blockier cars like Jeeps have a lower 'sweet spot'. 7. Get a higher flow muffler. This reduces the overall work the engine does pushing exhaust out. 8. Get your ECU tuned for better mileage, or get the official firmware updates from your car's manufacturer anyway. 9. Improve aerodynamics. All those novelty stick-ons you have on your car is killing your aerodynamics. Avoid things like roof racks, extra lights.. etc. The less stuff you have on your car, the better. Drive with the windows up at higher speeds too. 10. Avoid A/C. It takes energy to run the compressor. If you can do without, then do so. Run the cabin fan only if its a cool day. I can believe 60mpg on a car made of tinfoil with a tiny engine that doesn't follow any emission standards. I think this is the SUV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZWy_fASSiQ Notice how the steering wheel, gently wraps around the drivers face in the crash? Yeah, its the big bad US manufacturers that are blocking this car from being sold anywhere.
  16. Same here. I'm waiting for Deneb. Nehalem isn't an option for awhile because of the pricing. Its going to perform better and run cooler but the real issue is the price. AMD can only do well in the bang/buck department now. There's some good AM2+ boards. Looked at the SB750 based ones? Supposed to allow for better OCing.
  17. Its a video editing PC. If he's serious about it, he will find encoders and software that take advantage of 4 cores (as opposed to dual and even single threaded). The Phenom is the better choice over the E7200 here. This is the same with any mainstream piece of hardware manufactured, and it will be the same case with the E7200. I was looking into that, but Nehalem is far too expensive and it doesn't offer that much of a speed boost for regular apps. Sometimes its slower. It flies on number crunching apps like encoders and render-ers. AMD's Deneb will be released in the coming weeks. Benchmarks too. Its going to be better than Barcelona, we'll see by how much. BTW, Phenom is not all bad. Look at these numbers of the gimped X3 core version. Source: http://publish.it168.com/2008/0327/20080327012308.shtml
  18. Most games use 2 threads. Of course 2 fast cores is going to be better than 2 slow cores. If he gets an AMD system he can upgrade to the new 45nm Phenoms, and then the new ones in the future with Socket AM3 since they will be backwards compatible. They 45nm Deneb are supposed to be much improved. Benchmarks coming really soon. Socket 775 is done. It ends with E8600 and the Q9650. Phenom is the right choice. Better stick with an AMD brand board to ensure BIOS updates when AM3 comes around. AMD has beef with the third party manufacturers not updating their BIOS.
  19. Windows 7 is 32bit as well as 64bit.
  20. MS did more work on it. Especially with Kernel security.
  21. I don't think so. You might be out of luck. Can anyone tell me how to change the tire on a Mazda? I only know how to do it on a Chevy. I'm stuck you guys.
  22. Apples to oranges. XviD can only use 2 cores. Its supposed to use 4, but it doesn't make a difference. Use the same comparison with DivX or x264. Here's the XviD issue: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic342532.html
  23. Moot point. He's not OCing.
  24. Thanks. I'll do a trace after I figure out how.
  25. Install 64-bit. You will be able to use the full 4GB. Its more stable and has compatibility with 32-bit apps.
