  1. Be nice to have some of the mindows threads linked, a very usefull and educational concept all credit to Mike, just hopefully finishing a proof of concept single floppy windows 9x project to eventually communicate via mini-itx rs232 to a micro-controller. MINDOWS 1,519,663 bytes using a 2m30 disk, got to love win9x, anybody have fint?
  2. copy all the files in the "\Win98" directory ONLY on your Windows 98 or 98SE CD to your the directory containing 98lite (do not copy the CHANNELS, OLS, TOUR or CONTENT subdirectories or their contents) · if you intend installing 98micro or 98lite with the higher performance and lighter weight Windows 95 Explorer Shell desktop option (called the SLEEK desktop option in the installer) you will also need to copy the following three Windows 95 files to the setup files directory: EXPLORER.EXE SHELL32.DLL COMDLG32.DLL These need to come from an original Windows 95 CDROM; 95a, or 95b -- Windows 95c has integrated IE4 so files from 95c are not compatible. All three files should have version numbers in the form 4.00.XXXX (NOT 4.72.XXXX or later) in the file properties dialog · once the final Setup directory has all files copied to it, 98lite will make a \98lite subdirectory to store the Windows 95 shell and patched files so they will not need to be recopied or patched again (you may reuse this install directory again and again to clean reinstall Windows · If you are not installing or re-configuring multiple systems, or do not require fast "Shell Swapping" you may safely delete this 98lite subdirectory and all the files it contains; 98lite will make it again whenever you install/reinstall the SLEEK Windows 95 desktop option keeping it saves the extra steps and makes "Shell Swapping" as a rapidly re-configurable option HTH
  3. I don't think this is a good one. In my experience I found that it significantly degradated system performance. Some people like this tweak [fixed swap file size] better than the Win98/ME default dynamic swap file:http://www.mdgx.com/98-4.htm#COSW I've been also using it for quite a while, with no noticeable performance degradation. I've also installed this tweak on a couple of friends' Win98SE PCs which I service on a regular basis, also without any problems. Please notice that this tweak depends on the amount of RAM installed. If you have 64 MB or less, do not do this. HTH I always use conservativeswapusage=1 and unload dlls etc,and again I disable vcache not recommended for a normal install(similar to 98lite), alot of the time I run purely in ram (min of 128) no hard drive attached usually booting from a compact flash card. soporific I only have hybrid systems otherwise I would have tested your update straight the way, soon as I have a normal install I will test it out and cherry pick the updates for the other systems
  4. https://login.live.com/ppsecure/secure.srf?...aee32aa71375bd5 I can get to the login live screen after security warning and temp accepting the certificate on firefox, web page displays, perhaps 1 of the 50% or microsofts way of moving you to a latter day os. Also tried spoofing winxp internet explorer 6 setup and I get the same behavior as before using firefox.
  5. Eck If it is happening on different mboards the only time I have come across the same issue is when I have been making a minimised install and the fonts have all been set to hidden. attrib -h on reboot corrected this and as you pointed out windoctor may be making this change for you. Hope your up and running soon p.s a test drive using mindows for an install might be worth a try to see if the same issues arise soporific thanks for all your hard work, downloading now and will give it a try on my next install
  6. Eck try going through the step by step confirmation on boot up F8, not loading the vxds one at a time until you find the culprit, if it is a via chipset look out for viagart.vxd it can be a real pain.
  7. Nope, explorer.exe is just part of the shell of the os, it can be killed and/or replaced no problem
  8. They poster you have quoted has things upside down, from mdgx site Win98 SE IFSMGR.VXD 4.10.2225 Fix [225 KB, English] <-is the update they should have quoted/used. Then The second part applies ONLY to Windows 98 SE and ME, and consists in a workaround, by creating a Registry Value that allocates the updated IFSMGR.VXD [after installation and the mandatory reboot ] enough time (delay) to write (flush) all data stored in the memory cache buffer back to the hard disk(s)/partition(s) while Windows shuts down. This happens (according to the Microsoft explanation) because newer (E)IDE/ATA hard drives (HDs) have their own built-in cache buffer memory [a good thing ], which do NOT send proper signals [a bad thing ;(] to the drive controller [moreover if using a 3rd party proprietary add-on ATA66/ATA100/ATA133/RAID (E)IDE controller], and therefore their cache will NOT empty (flush) correctly upon OS shutdown, especially if your CPU clock speed is greater than 600 MHz, and if your HD(s) built-in cache buffer is equal to or larger than 2 MB. To do this, run Regedit and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion Right-click in the right hand pane -> create a New DWORD Value called "CacheWriteDelay" (don't type the quotes) -> click OK -> double-click on it -> check the Decimal box -> type 2000 (2 seconds delay measured in milliseconds); if 2000 doesn't work properly on your PC type 4000 (4 seconds delay in milliseconds) -> click OK or press Enter. Close the Registry editor and restart Windows when done. http://www.mdgx.com/newtip21.htm Are you sure the pc does not just suffer from a hung dde app
  9. In the past clean disk security has caused me problems, I disabled all of its shell extensions which were the cause of most of my problems after this software was installed. I still use the program today but I know that after I have run secure disk I will need to reboot otherwise over a period of time it will bring up a blue screen
  10. Superb video, just shows what can be done with a little time and stubborness
  11. The freeware version of 98lite might help you with the above http://www.litepc.com
  12. I use drivespace on ramdrives sometimes but they are so tiny for a network boot, so no problems here
  13. Did you mean c:\windows instead of c:\windows\system Why should he leave to a more modern os, they are perhaps happy with what they have, cannot run later os`s on their hardware, they might appreciate the Win9x forum as it seems this is where uses with more modern os`s seem to hang around anyway. Foxhound in pure dos F8 command prompt at boot up, type ren c:\windows\explorer.exe explorer.bak, then copy from where you have your modified explorer.exe to c:\windows. I.e if modified explorer.exe is on your floppy drive copy a:\explorer.exe c:\windows You can always go back to your original explorer.exe by doing the reverse at the dos prompt if things are not the way you want ren c:\windows\explorer.exe explorer.del ren c:\windows\explorer.bak explorer.exe HTH P.S by typing the dos command with /? at the end reveals that commands help, i.e ren /? shows you how to use rename (don not forget the space) copy /? shows you how to use copy
  14. Easy mistake to do when if == (strings) and not error levels. IF (pardon the pun) of any use IF NOT EXIST C:\exist\nul.ext GOTO End IF NOT EXIST C:\notexist\nul.ext GOTO End Echo. the directories do match up PAUSE CLS EXIT :End Echo. the directories do not match up PAUSE EXIT
  15. Interesting point. Would it be possible to rebuild it with only the needed VXDs (and put the other VXDs that normally aren't in it) and decrease bootup time even further? If you want to decrease boottime you have to add vxd's that your sytem needs but are not in vmm32.vxd. Reading the artikel provided in this topic confirmed my feelings that the startpost is based on a misunderstanding of how vmm32.vxd works. In the past I have used Vxdlib, available from mdgx`s website which provides excellent compression of vmm32.vxd (please have a backup copy etc) quote I have been able to achieve higher compression ratios than Microsoft's DEVLIB tool by finding the best match in the history buffer rather than just a good one" also other vxd tools on there eidenk I think you missunderstand me I mentioned wininit.ini as just one example of quite a few ways in which vmm32.vxd and for that matter system/vmm32 gets messed around with, i.e it is not a bug causing system crashes etc as the original poster on this issues states, errors with this file causing any instability in the os are not self inflicted. I appreciate you have installed a lot of software, but people out there do use vxds for other than they are intended.
  16. It would be nice if I could understand what you mean. I am simply stating that for example if I were to interact via a vxd to the virtual machine manager to monitor files open on the system and read them I would certainly not put my vxd into the system/vmm32 folder but into vmm32.vxd. I would also think any counter measures to stop this would do so in a like manner. If you look on the web you will find mention of files being added into vmm32.vxd. I am certain vmm32.vxd does not corrupt itself If i recall correctly one of the 98 update packs considered doing the very same thing (building a monolithic vmm32.vxd)
  17. I have never seen any program or driver or MS patch or anything that touches vmm32.vxd through wininit and I have installed truckloads of stuff. So that IMO the misuse of vmm32 accounts for only an extremely small fraction of problems people have with their computers. Give your link. If you program would you never want to run at ring 0???,. It would be nice to see through your eyes sometimes
  18. Just noticed this post, regarding point 1 I think win9x is an awesome embedded/rescue os, I have built countless embedded systems with a footprint a fraction of BartsPE. In fact I have a rescue system I carry around based on the 98 os which fits onto 2 floppies, 3 with network support for retrieving customers files from problem pc`s. I have been messing around to try to get it to fit onto 1 floppy disc but so far I have been beaten(work in progress). Have a look at litepcs EOS web pages, with an edited bios, win9x os they create tiny embedded kiosks etc plus 98 has a huge software back catalogue which can be ran on these devices. Completely agree with regards to your point 3
  19. Vmm32.vxd switches the processor from real to protected mode, the reason it is a monolithic driver file is to reduce pc bootup time. The only time problems occur with this file is when the programmers provide a buggy vxd or they screw up in the use of wininit.ini to add replace files in Vmm32.vxd. Making copies of Vmm32.vxd before any further vxds are added to it will prevent any necessary reinstall of windows. It is the missuse of this file which cause errors, system crashes.Having the vxds in a seperate directory only increases boot up time.
  20. You can get it here: http://thunder.prohosting.com/~ladi/e_cmd32.html#getver Other utility is Microsoft's FILEVER, it provides a bit more details including language version. Petr I seen to get filetype not allowed from the server, http://lbrisar.htmlplanet.com/e_cmd32.html seems to download, scan and work ok. Thanks for the heads up Petr
  21. By rebasing them all to the same base address would cause the dlls to be immediately be dumped to swap and result in that dll being made unavailable to share with anything else. Each subsequent app requiring the same dll would then have to load another one, again being made unavailable for sharing and so on and so on. Some of the times it is the C++ compilers error Borland,Watcom,LCC-win32 which all place the dll at 0x00400000 causing all these problems. Again as you say whoever wrote the code is not paying attention to how memory allocation works and are probably completely unaware concerning conflict issues. Rebasing the dlls properly can alleviate these problems and add some protection against buffer overflows etc from some exploits to come (this is the bit I am interested in)
  22. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4695718.stm Sorry I should have put this in the "is there a way to install IE7 in 98se?" thread regarding the yahoo toolbar
  23. I came across this and wondered if it might be helpfull http://www.codeproject.com/dll/niftyloadlib.asp seems to work similar to how citrix rebases
  24. My system had 18 of 32ram free before.. but after apply these settings and reboot I have 22 of 32 ram free now!!!! Thats because you have lowered your maxfilecache by 4 meg With regard to About the Vcache currently Im using: MinFileCache = 2048 MaxFileCache = 8192 <-- this will have been lowered by cachebooster try also minfilecache at zero so windows can adjust itself if memory becomes too low QUOTE(oscardog) Lowering the values of namecache, pathcache will also free more memory, [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ FS Templates\ Server] NameCache = a9 0a 00 00 (Will store 2729 filenames) PathCache = 40 00 00 00 (Will store 64 folders) also thanks for the tip.. I checked and seems that 98lite add that value by default Try altering these values, it was just an example, cachebooster will alter these values for you as well
