  1. Scitech drivers working fine on Intel 915 GM/GMS chipset, intel 828801FB/FBM PCI Express root port 2660/2662 states "this device is working properly" under the general tab, seems to fail with not enabled in bios sometimes though. Going to look into that some more, using winme ntkern.vxd etc to lessen chances of missing symbols. Usbhub20.sys reports missing none, having a play with that later in the week
  2. I'd like to ask this too. I've tried with LordPE, but the modified program crashes on startup Once you have analyzed the import/export of the dll you can make your own dll which in some cases you can return a null or return a value to bypass said event
  3. I agree with BenoitRen on this one. disabling scripting for ALL sites is a bad idea as that will break most sites that depend on scripts and the sites will not work as expected. ONLY thing I hate about Firefox browsers is poor cookie management. Dang those Firefox makers need to make it easier for users to control what cookies to accept and what cookies to reject (and easier access to the Cookie controls feature). The Mozilla, Seamonkey, IE, Opera browsers have far BETTER controls for cookie management and Firefox browsers lack the ability to reject "third party" cookies. Read bitman's statement in the Spybot "Firefox 2 immunization" forum thread: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=65158 It's a very interesting point he made about Firefox. Myself I agree with LLXX, it is far more preferable to only allow trusted sites to have access to activex etc than to try to rectify circumvention, just my 2 pennies worth
  4. And I'm simply saying that it is impossible - none of the released hotfixes change OS version number. Please give me any example of hotfix that changes the windows version number. Petr I have not/am not refering to released hotfixes,I gleamed that bit of information from the post "No Auto-patching at all, and it reports 4.10.1999" I am refering to DeadDudes very interesting non standard setup cd and replying to Drugwash "Then, what is 4.xx.1999, repeatedly reported by DeadDude?" @DeadDude it will be very interesting to see any screenshots you are able to take Friday, and also to see how ntkern.vxd differs from 98se/me
  5. This is about file version, not OS version. OS version remains unchanged. Petr I am simply saying that the os version number has been changed to reflect the hotfixes applied
  6. I don't believe. 4.10.2000 is Windows 98 with SP1 (CSP) but the general properties tab shows always 4.10.1998 for FE and 4.10.2222 for SE. Petr "With few exceptions, Windows 98 hotfixes are stamped with a version number of 4.10.1999 or greater, which indicates that the file is a newer version than the file that had been originally included with Windows 98. Windows 98 Second Edition hotfixes are generally stamped with a version number of 4.10.2223 or greater" If i applied the above, in a company enviroment, I would alter certain information i.e version so I could keep tabs on which pc has which update applied. Easy failsafe method
  7. 4.10.1999 is a hotfixed Windows 98 FE, version number changed via update no doubt, easily done.
  8. If you can boot to safe mode F5 copy c:\windows\system,c:\windows\inf and c:\windows\system32 to a new folder of your choice, from bootdisk.com download a win98se startup disk, follow its instructions. Insert your 98se bootdisk from bootdisk and enable cdrom option after putting your 98se cdrom into the drive. Navigate to your cdrom drive it will show you this on boot up. Type cd cdrom drive letter (probably d:) then run setup, for unknown devices it cannot find during setup point it to the inf folder and then the system or system32\drivers folder you have saved previously. You will probably need to reinstall any programs you were using. Simply restoring the registry i.e system.dat user.dat would be the quickest option but depending upon what has been deleted the above option hopefully will get it working. All the best
  9. Browsing around whilst waiting for my driver stuff to arrive has anybody managed to create a stub for the kernal mode routines to extend the symbol table in ntkern.vxd. Or could the extended version used in winme be implanted and then a stub created to rectify any missing functions into our 98se systems. This and rectifying the unicode string differences in DriverEntry might be a start in using available latter day wdms. Thanks
  10. I will probably make a pigs ear of it but I have ordered software and books, and will have a dabble with them. I understand the process and can program to a reasonable level. Thanks for the links much appreciated
  11. WDM is a standard API for device driver development under all windows systems, it was announced in 1996 so 1 driver could fit all platforms. As you have found Ntkern.vxd allows the Windows 98 architecture to appear, to the class drivers, bus class drivers, minidriver etc, to be the same as the NT architecture. The wdm drivers you have installed are not win2k specific, your os will have been using them before instead of vxd`s
  12. From what I can gather it alters the maximum multiplication of your ram for your swapfile, i.e if you have 64meg ram then swapfile default maximum=256meg, It probably is best left at the default level being that most people have higher available ram these days and barely use the swapfile after tweaking. It causes problems with dos if set to high, I remember reading about errors with it, when messing around with a diskless win98 network boot. Hope it is of some help
  13. http://www.defectivebydesign.org/ Roman Thanks for the link sorry for being vague had a thick head from the flu, I have been really concerned with the direction of digital protection and the amount of it installed into latter day operating systems. This drummed home to me how important our win9x systems are, I would like to attempt writing device drivers whether vxd or wdm`s for a relatively modern laptop I have which has unsupported 98 drivers. Has anybody any experience with using compuwares vtoolsd or driverstudio and share their experience in using it, or could they recommend any alternative method in driver creation without resulting to using ms ddk. Thanks
  14. software can easily check available free space and move any overflow to the next desired drive without needing SUBST and without user interaction, I must admit I have never tried this out on such large hard drives but I can see no reason why it would fail. Free available ram might also be handy
  15. "Risky bloat? Since XP SP2 enables by default the firewall there have been 0 remotely exploited bugs" Are you sure? did the code crowbar not completely shut it down. Also being that if fails all 18 independent leak tests and has no way to prevent adware, Spyware, Trojans, phishing exploits and malware from stealing personal information from a PC I do find that statement puzzling. "Oh and XP? I have some PCs at home that have been running CPU-intensive (seti@home and folding@home) applications in background for entire months without ever being rebooted (because all of my pcs shut down with hybernation)" This 9x pc also runs for months, it has at present a commit charge of 20 meg of and available 261, and has 30 meg of ram free from an available 96. Resource meter still shows all above 70% free which will certainly go a lot higher when I finish compressing my files, playing my mp3s/movies,browsing the web. filesharing is always on and I do not cheat by putting it into hibernation. Finally buffer overflows by design or sloppy programming cause havoc even in XP due to not all memory seqments being protected

  17. You must like s***. Which bloat? Cairo is not bloat.Currently, they have to maintain three different librairies to get Gecko to render on the major platforms. GDI for Windows, and whatever they use for Linux and Mac OS X. With Cairo, they'll have to maintain just one library to get Gecko to render on all platforms. Easier, less time-consuming, and makes for less code, so it's actually less bloat. As an added bonus, it allows for better rendering. Gecko passes the Acid 2 test since early December on trunk! I'm sure we wouldn't be complaining about how Cairo seems to bloat Gecko if it didn't make Mozilla drop Win9x support. "Reducing codesize is great! But completely killing Win9x support by not even allowing a customized build for Win9x? Yuk! (Cairo does not completely break Win98 support, as it can be disabled.)" "That it can be disabled is temporary. We'll remove that once we're on and good on all win, mac, linux" Moving to cairo for more rounded corners etc to pass acid 2 tests, disable the Cairo bloat and it might work, but only temporary because they will disable this, seems a very smart move, when opera works on 9x and passes the test.
  18. Well, although it is likely Opera will keep support for Win9x for some time to come, you never know when they will cut it off. The power of open source is that anyone can contribute, i.e. there is an opportunity here with Firefox and continuing support for Win9x. GetGlyphIndices could be worked via a binary buffer search UpdateLayeredWindow i am not sure what you might do with this and others, but good luck I hope you succeed, as mentioned why they add more bloat is very puzzling. They perhaps got the idea when co-operating with ms when trying to get it to work with vista perhaps
  19. I'd like to see if he gave me some real info... that's why I need the help from someone in the UK. Yeah, I took a look at this story and it's quite good! I fell like reporting to eBay won't do anything at all. I'd like to know if this is a kid living with his parents and scare him a little! I took a look at Western Union and if I send him something like 2.50$ there is a 16$ fee to send the money but I don't mind. Hi only just stumbled across this http://www.city-visitor.com/westbromwich/banks.html shows the address to be valid, its towards the bottom of the page. I have tried the telephone number several times but nobody responds. It is probably a kid who has asked the shop owner to accept this w.u payment from you and will definitely be a scam If you give the information to here https://secure.crimestoppers-uk.org/giving/...tform/index.asp? they should pass the information onto the police and arrest him all being well
  20. I think some of the Cairo functions are going to be very difficult to implement. I have just installed Opera 9 which still supports Win95 and is freeware (according to tucows anyway), and at the moment I am very impressed by its speed. I do hope it takes some of the market share from firefox and remind them how many users still run Win9x. Goodbye firefox
  21. The cabs on the hard drive would be very useful, its the way i do all my installs. The update files could then later on also be put in cab files alongside them (cut down on duplicates and shrink the installer size quite considerably). Until eventually all the update files get incorporated into the win9x setup directory cabs on the hard drive. The slipstream project shown that this could be done but once the proof of concept had been completed it stopped. My **** browser will never let me vote for this project, but anyways keep up the good work All the best
  22. Interesting info Is reactos a dos os? if not it might be a steep learning curve to adapt. IMO I think we need some c++ coders to adapt what we already have, wdm`s unfortunately seem to rely on these headers, the ddk is not very assembly friendly. I just hate programming in C Once driver capability is available it might also help the kup, by bouncing back via a vxd to the none functioning game authentication id requests which are presently missing etc. It would be real nice if somebody could adapt reactos, its a real shame they didnt get very far with their previous freewin95 project. That would certainly have been something to get our teeth into.
  23. He's not our friend, but fair is fair. He explained why he posted several times in a row (I had to do it too since yesterday). There's a quote maximum on each post, which I've counted to be 10. If you want more quotes, you have to make a new post. The problem being is that no matter how you try to explain your point of view and show evidence to the facts, it gets very frustrating and repetitive whilst the person refuses to listen, or they have their mind set and continue to infinitum. Far better if they actually try the os and the work that has been carried out to improve it since 1998 whilst offering constructive critism. Once they depart from the subject and start involving other os`s like linux as part of the argument, it makes me wonder over their intentions. Linux to me is something to be admired in the same respect as the hard work of the people in this forum and neither have anything fundamentally in common with xp
