  1. If you are going to use the pc for web browsing ordinary day to day jobs, win98se would probably give you the most pleasant experience, winme or win2k after that. If you want to use or upgrade your pc so you can do the same thing, slower if you do not upgrade, if your pc has a slower cpu (by todays standards) a lower amount of ram (by todays standards) upgrade your power supply and use winxp (login to its drm and monthly update schedule, I think they have stopped its phone home mechanism now after all the complaints) You can burn as much power as you like to do everyday tasks, it all depends on your friends egos .
  2. I can get win9x to boot emulated in qemu without no problems, but using the grub for dos inc memdisk when booting the image non emulated i receive out of memory errors, it uses a 20 meg (10 meg used)hard drive image no sector, head etc problems. Has anybody had a similar experience or will i have to go down the root and boot via syslinux using memdisk. Any info greatly appreciated
  3. Might be worth a download of oxygen trial etc to eliminate any unknowns if supported or if you can obtain a copy of hidmaker you could probably interface with the device
  4. I cannot help with your usb problem but I can recommend getting a cheap Win98se usb bluetooth adaptor, the ivt bluesoleil compatable ones worked flawlessly with bluesoleil suite and oxygen and i assume would with pc suite. Perhaps something worth trying until you have your cable working.
  5. "I'm going to get Norton Ghost today, to mimic my hard drive to another drive. Hopefully next week, I get more RAM. " You can also use xxcopy32 freeware www.xxcopy.com to clone your drive, its the one I use, the site has quite comprehensive info in doing this and also making backups. add your new drive on to your pc,make sure it is a slave, format it then xxcopy32 c: d: /clone (run this command twice to ensure it has copied every file) all done. Assuming d: is your new drives letter. Use with care it is a powerful tool All the best
  6. In complete agreement with Eck "You forget Eck that newer is better and we must strive to ensure that those who have made a lot of money (os wise) desire to have realistic blood flow, shock factor, the new rock and roll reborn in front of our kids eyes, make the games as though you are commiting the act yourself" (in some perverse dimension hopefully) and fill their pockets as well. Time to boot up sensi soccer, dungeon master, canon fodder. Rant over Atmostphere if your motherboard supports your ram and if its at your maximum bus speed you will only achieve a great benefit
  7. I use the frontend and mplayer from here http://mpf.dzm.hu/download.php seems to be the best for me on my 366mhz 96mb ram cannon fodder net pc. I have tried also the latest version and it plays fine, needed -vo directx:noaccel though. Using a tweaked and stripped down 95 shell system. Hope its of use to you
  8. Try F8 on boot up choose 5 command prompt only, type scandisk.exe c: (or whatever drive you wish to check) see if that helps. Or if you can get hold of ndd (norton disk doctor an old version when norton made top flight software) use that. Could possibly be fat corruption, might need some ide devices unplugged HTH P.S be prepared for some lost clusters, get a live cd and backup your important stuff if you can
  9. I use 1by1 with its ogg plugin for good quality vbr music and mplayer or vlc for my own theora encoded files, both theora players need some cpu to avoid sync problems (although skew is available), 1by1 plays ogg without any problems even on a 200mhz non mmx also a good defrag prog like voptxp (win9x compatable) works wonders HTH
  10. "In a few years time maybe you'll find a linux distro that you like" I have found a very nice user friendly distro, they are hopefully providing skin support shortly which will incorperate a win98 scheme, they are also quite win9x friendly rating its logical layout. It already has a similar windows installer non of the make this and that, and decent virus scanners. It dual boots comfortably with my 9x from any medium very quickly no bootloader needed etc. I shall be using a suitable virus scanner from this system which checks both systems so I am not to worried if some virus checking vendors abandon ship. I am behind a hardware firewall/nat router so zonealarm can go and tiddle. I am in the middle of trying methods to parallel boot the os with my win9x which might come in handy. So I for 1 am determined not to leave my monolithic os behind
  11. Therefore, can I (or anyone) TRUST Windows XPsp2 on a broadband link?????? I would doubt very much if anybody could put their hand of heart and say they could really trust XPsp2, I have serious doubts over incorporated features that can be used counter productively Animal Farm very good book
  12. I am presuming that what has been released has just scratched the surface as yet
  13. I think if you must use I.E it is imperative to disable active scripting to disable javascript, vbs and activex, adding only sites you require in the trusted zone. I would also disable vbs via file association as any standard security feature. Unfortunately it seems they are going to bypass even this temporary defense shortly so use Firefox as a browser in the interim or a live cd LinkScanner http://linkscanner.explabs.com/linkscanner/default.asp
  14. I have not had the opportunity to use your info provided, but feel I must comment on your industriousness, very well done
  15. If I remember correctly bubbleboy amongst a host of others executes just by viewing the infected email in the preview pane of O.E, no user intervention, not similar to running an exe. Probably ok if using OE6 or above and fully patched system (until the next one) Only pointed it out in case your vbs gets a low uptake/feedback because of the manner its scripted, no malice intended
  16. This is exactly what destroyed the Amiga community, I have used both patches and would like to thank the modifiers for their hard work and time in keeping the old monolith working/improving, and look forward to future releases, svga project etc
  17. Hi Fred thanks for your work but due it requiring windows scripting host I am unable to test/give feedback. I disabled/never installed WSH when I locked down my pc against the trojans/worms/viri the script kiddies released
  18. Without doubt Grub4dos, as it has BOTH the abilities of booting from RAM with internal commands AND by using memdisk, + a bunch of VERY interesting "direct booting" features, possibility of integration with NTLDR, and to be used (GRLDR) as a no-emulation bootsector for CD's. Have a look at these threads on 911CD: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16980 http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=18231 Search foor "Grub4dos" on the board for more. jaclaz Very useful info, although I cannot seem to get grub4dos documentation "server not found" http://newdos.yginfo.net/grubdos.htm Thank you for the links
  19. Mmmmm interesting which bootloader would you suggest, I have had a look at memdisk in booting 98 from ram. Spinman perhaps by looking at the error level of comspec, might give you an idea of which drive it is booting from. ECHO %COMSPEC% ¦ CHOICE /C:ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ > NUL IF ERRORLEVEL 1 SET BOOTDRV=A etc etc
  20. It a complete heath robinson affair, all are minimalistic win9x systems, well motherboards stacked together sharing power supplies (not necessary on small farms)http://www.burningissues.net/how_to/power/psu.htm and activated via wol on a switched network. Controlled by my win9x server which holds the over the air wintv mpeg2 captures which i encode on a very regular basis. Depending on the pending recording status on the server, and the size of recordings pending to be encoded the 9x systems are started as and when needed and piped the theroa parameters. This leaving my server free to continue recording/encoding itself. I acquired an awful lot of motherboards and cpus suitable for the 9x system and after reviewing vidomi some years back decided to put them to some use. I just thought that other people might possibly have older systems they could use in a similar fashion and negate the lack of dual processor support and offer an alternative to that nasty xp word (application/programming experience permitting) Being also a friends of the earth kind of guy/tight devil I like to have control over my power consumption also
  21. I will probably get flamed for this but I have broad shoulders, the advantage win9x has is the ability to be all things to all men or to be targeted to a specific task, you have dual + processors I boot via network cards, other pcs to do complex mathematical computations as and when needed. I think its called clustering and saves you an amount in power consumption plus noise and gets the job done. My present system used for the purpose has no difficulty working with music, editing videos etc etc ( I do not play games) converting videos when needed switches to clustering (very rarely). For example clustering 8 1ghz pcs (as needed) with passive cooling might not make us the second class citizens you know.
  22. No problem, happy to help Traymodule http://am-productions.biz/getprod.php?pcode=TrayModule is handy for use with Liteshell and I also used shellon which enables crash protection and easy shell selection on startup etc when I embedded a win98 usb bluetooth system a while ago. I hope in the future to sort the 98 explorer issue out, so it is available to those who might want it.(When I get some free time). Would be nice for mindows and really increase its useability. All the best
  23. comdlg32.dll is also needed, Liteshell will runwith these three files as win98. I think there needs to be a couple of the i.e core and registry entries added also if you would like 98`s explorer.exe as the shell. I use Liteshell so never pursued it any further. HTH
  24. fc /L c:\filemon.txt c:\dos.txt > c:\unique.txt if you want to read the text, if not look at the find command and use its error codes or xxcopy16 /clone if you want to copy files different (lfn needed) HTH
