  1. Install mindows onto a cdrom disk, using subst.exe w: c:\cdrom in your autoexec.bat after creating the cdrom directory. After the initial setup stage where it reboots for device detection drop to the dos prompt from f8 ren setupx.dll to setupx.bak then type win. It will moan and groan about this file missing but install will complete. What you have here is a barebones win9x cd which will boot on any machine to do any repairs you might wish to. The methods of creating a bootable read only win9x cdrom are all over the internet. It can even fit onto a cd business card if you so desire. One method i use to revert back to a pc in a state i am happy with is to simply copy over the contents of the windows folder ignoring the swap file to another folder called for example zindows this can be rar ed if you want to reduce its chances of being compromised. If at any time I wish to revert back to the original state I can either in dos or from the mindows cd ren windows to delete then ren zindows windows, unraring if needs be and i am back where i wanted to be within seconds without having to search for added files or remove an application i am not happy with. Securing your important data with pgp and i think you are good to go
  2. In network settings go to bindings remove bindings for tcp/ip ,ignore the warnings, netbios over tcp box will be made selectable
  3. The Windows 32-bit protected-mode cache driver (Vcache) determines the maximum cache size based on the amount of RAM that is present when Windows starts. Vcache then reserves enough memory addresses to permit it to access a cache of the maximum size so that it can increase the cache to that size if needed. These addresses are allocated in a range of virtual addresses from 0xC0000000 through 0xFFFFFFFF (3 to 4 gigabytes) known as the system arena. On computers with large amounts of RAM, the maximum cache size can be large enough that Vcache consumes all of the addresses in the system arena, leaving no virtual memory addresses available for other functions such as opening an MS-DOS prompt (creating a new virtual machine).
  4. What are you /edit: you=oscardog/ trying to accomplish? Want to start (yet another) stupid 9x vs NT flame here? Good luck, fanboi... No not at all, I was musing after reading the thread if you were being humerous via satirical deviousness, but has you have seen win9x still has its uses, despite preconceived negativitey. In my option both os`s have their uses, end of story
  5. Where did that come from? Is that your personal (flawed) opinion, or something? No not my opinion from http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=97563 just wondered if its a wind up
  6. From nt4 today I never was Win9x fan, even when I had to use it. I never seen worse OS than any of those 95/98/ME series. Reinstalls and crashes on a basically daily basis - I think it sums it up. Im surprised Msoft never shipped it with some ghost/imaging software (so people could quickly and easily 'restore' their win9x harddisk with last saved working config, instead of going thru all that lengthy installation process). IMHO Msoft's reputationsuffered alot after release of win9x (or maybe since win3.x actually). Except for those old games that need DOS, I really can't see any reason why anyone would use win9x nowadays or in the past since 198/1999 - computers shipped back then already with 64 or memory, enough for NT4 already Anyways. What about those DX5 files? Could anyone kindly check their files and let me know am I missing anything? (see my prev. post) or give me some hint? This is what I get when open directx control panel: mmmmmmmm makes you wonder
  7. hi. what about I have nokia 7110 which says can connect via ca-53 and not with a symbian os. I have an old pc so that I can not load a newer os like 2000 or xp or never vista. what can I do to connect my phone to pc? or in the other words can I? http://www.dailysofts.com/program/570/5441...Nokia_7162.html
  8. I would think you would need some kind of delay between sending the different sets of keystrokes, try using a sleep time of a second or 2, the 5ms default is possibly acting before the child/parent window has been updated. Also enter some debug code to point out where the errors occur, i.e If WinExists("Untitled -") Then MsgBox(0, "", "Window exists sending keystrokes after sleep") EndIf or If WinActive("Untitled -") Then MsgBox(0, "", "Window active sending after sleep") EndIf etc These such lines can be removed later and may point to where the script is failing Without using the software it is tricky to pinpoint the fault precisely
  9. You will need to set focus onto the last window, use WinActivate then WinActive to check that window has been selected then WinClose when finished
  10. I can't, Because the manufacturer of the card and driver is Sony Corporation and they don't support modified systems, Because I have modified mine, I have broken the warrenty, They also wouldn't support the driver since it is publicly available. smrt.sys has no missing imports using win98se/me ntkern.vxd, your problem derives from smrt.inf not being Signature="$Chicago$". So the inf needs a rewrite, to enable the correct registry additions/alterations for win9x. I.e devloader ntkerrn`s structure, altering any lfn`s (causes driver boot up problems) etc. If you have some time spare, you can try the trial software from jungo on nt (when the cards drivers are installed) to give you some idea of how win9x or Chicago driver infs are created. Also have a look in your windows inf folder at different infs to see how the structure of them differs to a purely nt version
  11. As a rule of thumb, you may want to ignore Andromeda's posts as they most often appear to be pure drivel coated by affirmations of his own expertise. ME defrag is reputedly faster than the 98SE one but it it still very slow IMO. Certainly it is not 10 times faster. And if it's faster by some amount, it is certainly because it's code has been optimized. If you want something that defrags fast, get Diskeeper Lite from a download site. It is much faster than the ME one and by very much. It also has the big advantage of letting you defrag drives on which write operations are carried out by the OS or applications, so it never needs to restart because something has changed on the drive and you never need to go in safe mode to defrag a drive such as the one on which the OS is installed. Why do you personally attack individuals?, the chap gave his own valid opinion. You have done this before reporting other people patching signed/unsigned integers, and predicting the end of this os. What is wrong with you,do you get some power trip from it. If you are anything that you portray yourself to be, roll out some wdms for latter day hardware or start patching the os for 64bit. If you having nothing constructive to say, say nothing
  12. Using ren, might save you creating, deleting directories until everything is finished. Modifying the registry to point to the necessary source driver files or using subst, adding/altering the path statement might help. I have use most of this to make tiny win9x but never on a full install.Hopefully food for thought. Keep up the good work All the best
  13. Just as a matter of interest some of the modern ac trains in the uk are controlled by a dos os,I speak to one of the companies engineers and they love its reliability, small footprint, ease of being programmed and speed. Seems to control massive bipolar transistors, all the control circuitry etc with no problems.
  14. In IE settings Auto Config is not ticked but Auto Detect Settings is. I'm on Orange Broadband - billed as 8MB but in practice around 5MB!@oscardog - Don't use a router. Are you sure, that white box thing orange calls livebox is your router, if it is the same as my orange adslDon't have a white box. All I have is the green SpeedTouch modem Orange (then Freeserve) made me pay through the nose for! Ouch, thats a shame. Orange gives a wireless/wired router free with some monthly phone contracts and free 2mb broadband, £5 extra per month for 8 meg. All national/local calls anytime from a landline are are also free of charge. Might be worth a call. All the best

  16. Its probably when your router is assigning an ip address to your network card, altering your ip to a static address in network settings speeds things up. Assigning a number greater than 192.168.7.1 (which will be your router address) i.e 192.168.7.11, then putting 192.168.7.1 into your default gatewayshould help
  17. What are your intentions? Care of wiki An agent's intention in performing an action is their specific purpose in doing so, the end or goal they aim at, or intend to accomplish. .. inspired to do what?
  18. The only thing I can tell you is that it works without problems on a lited 98 using a 95 shell, backup your system and give it a try many thanks to the author
  19. xoring your logic, produces that you must be the village id***
  20. After receiving a warning from a young super mod regarding a comment I made about the banning , I feel that other methods should have been made i.e filtering the persons threads etc etc instead of the draconian way this issue has been dealt with. To lose such an important person from this forum should not have been dealt with so lightly, then with some heavy handedness it becomes forbidden to express any views about it. If msfn is being moderated by juveniles I think myself I will move on to pastures new, probably have a look in here now and then, but I do not think I will be posting much anymore All the best
  21. On second thoughts it seems you may need to partition your drive to be able to use these, unfortunately the creator has been banned by some 17 year old, who might have been able to help you more
  22. Well, I guess you are smarter than me, then. I just thought since you said you were going to pick up a book that you hadn't programmed before. So, right now I'm using a nightly build of Firefox 3.0a2 on Windows XP (which I'm running on my primary machine, with a 2200MHz processor), but it doesn't seem that different, except that it has implemented support for a couple of rarely used web standards it didn't support before. The implementation seems pretty good, though. I have never actually programmed anything, but if the thing that will make Firefox incompatible is the Cairo graphics library, and more use of Unicode, wouldn't simply porting that library, and changing the source code to use the Unicode libraries available for Windows 98 solve all the problems? The person does not need to reinvent the wheel, but modify it to go round. I hope firefox do not close the trunk down which enables people to modify its source, and enable another up to date browser to function on 9x. In my opinion it is better to try and fail than to never to try at all, if this person who is attempting to extend our os`s lifespan by allowing a choice of a web browser then I wish them success.
  23. Perhaps this topic and such like should have/should be moved to the other operating systems forum if it is not about win9x. Although some good points have been raised these questions have mostly been discussed their already.
  24. Xenos kernel project added extra functionality but it did not alter the monolithic kernel to that of a different system, it is still 9x through and through. The Linux community is certainly more vibrant, they have people in their that have gone to the trouble and picked up a c# programming book. I am certain their are people in this forum that are quite capable of moving the kernel project onwards and the same applies to device drivers and ntkern.vxd. Learning kernel mode programming takes time, and needs to be balanced with full time work etc. WinXP will be around for many more years to come, do not go surrender monkey just yet. Nix may start hitting brick walls also, due to Win hollywood forcing device manufacturers to release even less information regarding device drivers or fear a law suit. I sincerely hope they are allowed open access all be it without the inbuilt protection information or it smells to much like restrictive practice to me. If you want to help any of these os`s pick up and learn c#, study imports/exports, make your own apps
  25. Its surprising how many win2k .sys files will work with our system, the only difference is within the inf files, shame they did not all include $CHICAGO$, those that have missing imports can be rectified with a stub file. I realise on this i915 laptop bought at xmas that its ac-link audio and 2200bg wireless can be made to work under 9x its mostly about setting the registry up correctly. Thanks for the usb2 stack link, perhaps this os is not as restricted as first thought.
