  1. I'm not sure how can Aida help to choose the graphics card. Do you mean AGP support identification? It should be noted that Aida has changed to Everest, the freeware version, Everest Home, was stopped in November 2005 (you can google for everesthome_build_0474.zip) and now exists just Everest Ultimate, trial version can be downloaded here: http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.p...d=3〈=en and the latest official beta (3.01.693) can be downloaded here: http://www.lavalys.com/forum/index.php?showforum=12 Petr Yes purely for motherboard agp and memory bus identification Petr, if cards like Cygnus suggests work it will do the job and save the lady a lot of £`s
  2. Aida32 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html might help
  3. Glad your runnung faster, with regards to your lower memory status try to see if you can access the net without aol internet explorer and all its associated pop up rubbish. See if you can ping www.google.com from msdos command prompt. If you can then you should be able to access the net directly from offbyone or firefox web browsers etc
  4. Hi Purplepenny and welcome Please be aware that your choice of graphics card will be affected by your motherboards agp bus speed, 1x,2x,4x etc and also by your system memory bandwidth. Non jibberish mode, if you can give us some motherboard details we might be able to narrow the graphics cards down a bit All the best
  5. With most of the above I think you might be better seeing how this progresses http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=81090 using the W98_Slip tool from a new installation. I think it might be easier to do it via this method for now, seeing as some of the above rely on I.E integration,(I have wondered if 98se2me could be done I.E less) and mindows edging towards getting rid of the beast and being replaced with something else. Hope this helps Thanks for the patch You might need to look at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OptionalComponents\DX] and [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OptionalComponents\IEBrowser] i.e the inf called All the best
  6. I think he likes to use his intelligence and is waying up the balance between me and 98 with support from professional people who are breaking barriers such as the 137gb barrier prolifically. And who are not so daft whereby they post about other os`s in the wrong forum
  7. First off enter or change your logon password to a blank one, then change Network configuration to use Windows logon in the Primary Network logon box. This will enable you to bypass the logon screen. Please then go to GRC.com and read the section on bindings, this will disable netbios over tcp/ip and make your p.c a whole lot safer. (if it is installed) Then search for mtu, rwin, ttl settings altering these will give you optimum performance over tcp/ip. I am sure mdgx www.mdgx.com has some information on these on his comprehensive web site The above works on a 98se P.C and I assume should not be any different to your first edition HTH
  8. Thanks for the app, brilliant work, could the tool be modified to work standalone and use the infs to add remove directx, activemovie, system tools etc etc to an already setup basic install i.e mindows. Kind of like the 98lite bought version but from a 18meg installation. Then if somebody only wants to run thier machine as a web browser or multimedia platform only those files are added. If in future somebody writes specific viri to target our platform their success rate might be greatly reduced due to the files targeted not being on the system. Again many thanks for your hard work, long may it continue.
  9. LLXX If you could upload diamond somewhere it would be greatly appreciated, I was puzzled why i could not create cabs in parity with the setup ones glaurung thanks very much for the slip.bat and the background info very useful
  10. ...I'm still working on it though @glaurung: I believe M$ is using a private tool to generate these INFs. I guess I'll just use the relational DDF method... or maybe a script to replace the CAB numbers in the original layout INFs with the correct ones. Appreciate your time and effort LLXX @echo off makecab /D CompressionType=LZX /D CompressionMemory=21 %1 %2
  11. <file> = <cabinet number>,<subdir>,<filename>,<size>,<checksum> could the checksum be the issue for the failure, if the files replaced did not match etc I read somewhere microsoft did it this way to make the test and development easier, making it easier to edit and replace files if an update was needed during development
  12. Its quite handy to have another windows 98 installed different pc/partition/drive to copy the files of the apps dlls etc needed, to copy from (saves messing about with .cabs). Once your chosen apps installed on your full win98se run its executable through dependency walker www.dependencywalker.com where you can see its required files and also use the profile function to see the relevant calls. Copy the missing files into your mindows system folder and your app should run. Inctrl5 http://www.devhood.com/Tools/tool_details.aspx?tool_id=432 (please do virus checks on any downloads) is also handy to use preinstall to see any reg keys created/altered which you may want to recreate and files copied. I have often thought about creating an application to automate the process for addons to a basic mindows but time is at a premium these days.
  13. Found this, hope it is of some help Win32+ Driver Model (WDM) The Win32 Driver Model (WDM) is an all new, common driver model for Windows 95 and Windows NT+ . WDM will enable some common types of devices using USB and IEEE 1394 to have a single driver for both operating systems. The WDM has been implemented by adding selected NT Kernel services into Memphis Beta 1 via a special virtual device driver (NTKERN.VXD). This allows Memphis Beta 1 to maintain full legacy device driver support while adding support for new WDM drivers. and as it turned out, in the win98's VMM there is a cool vxd, called NTKERN.VXD, which provides some NT's INT 2E services. Mmoreover, INT 2E is used when win98 is loading, at that time such functions as ntoskrnl!NtPowerInformation are called.
  14. You might be best to go back to a previously sound registry then run your av/spyware software. Have a look at scanregw http://www.mdgx.com/98-1.htm#SCANREG98 and how to go back to a previous saved registry http://www.mdgx.com/newtip10.htm RESTORE DAMAGED REGISTRY hopefully you have a copy saved before your trouble started Please read thoroughly and be carefull If you just want to delete the left behind icons in your control panel make sure explorer view folder options view Hidden files click show all files then ok and search for *.cpl. Again be carefull in deleting the right ones
  15. I agree, i find its design far more intuitive, i always switch to classic desktop when i have to repair customers xp pcs, seems more productive. That and the lack of the annoying "I know what you want to do" approach when a cd or memory card is inserted, (I know it can be disabled, but then the owners would have to think for themselves) makes me appreciate my own systems.
  16. I suppose it depends what you realy want to accomplish, if you want to use your pc to play later day games buy an xbox 360. If you want to browse the web,p2p,email,word process etc there are countless motherboards on ebay "new" to do this task. If you want to burn 500 watts from the power supply to do the same thing, it would be easy to get a xp3200 and above setup to do the same, I run my xp3200 win98 system when I need to convert movies and I am in a rush, most of the time it is off. Usually I try to accomplish the rest of the tasks on a 10w cpu. I do not put all the lights on in my house to go to the bathroom. What do you want to do?
  17. I know, and I am pretty good at sorting out information, but it's still a convoluted format, and (are you the maintainer of that site?) even to me a bit "wordy". For example, one post, from that site: "Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE Embedded Web Fonts T2EMBED.DLL 5.00.2195.7073 Security Vulnerability Fix: Direct download [211 KB, English]. Requires MS IE 5.5 SP2 or newer already installed! BUG: T2EMBED.DLL Fix above installs BUGgy INF file! FIX: MUST Install this INF Fix [63 KB] AFTER installing T2EMBED.DLL Fix above!" Nowhere is the MS KB# or MS update number found, and any specifics AT THIS POINT WHY the update is "buggy", why there are TWO "fixes" and WHAT the "fixes" do, are, and how/why they are needed! Finally, unless I KNOW I have a font problem, I have no clue why I need it! Imagine if I am a "much less than a power user" who just wants to keep my "windows" updated! This needs to be made clear and easy to reference back to either a MS bulletin, a CERT advisory, or a publicized security issue that can be remedied by third parties - such as you kind folks! Don't you see that THIS IS MY POINT! That quote is from my site [just look at the URL where it was quoted from ]:http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#9SU Now for the way I decided to post updates at my site [to make it short and easy to understand for everybody, not just for a restricted crowd of power users/geeks like us, and without posting any MSKB Qxxxxxx/KBxxxxxx and/or MS0x-0xx numbers, which most people find annoying and unnecessary]: - Official updates start with the word "Microsoft". - Unofficial updates start with the word "Unofficial". - All Windows editions a particular update applies to are listed after "Microsoft", from oldest to newest. - Brief bug/error description follows. - File(s) name(s) which will be replaced by the update follow(s). - File(s) version(s)/build(s) follow(s) [this is also a bit annoying for some people]. - The 1st link is either to MS security bulletin or MSKB article which describes the bug and its fix [if all that info available]. - The 2nd link which says "Direct download" is to the file itself. - If any other steps are necessary for a particular update to work/install properly, they will be detailed step by step, eventually with links to files that might be necessary. - If more info [from MS and/or other 3rd parties] is available on the subject, it will be listed as link(s) to relevant web pages. And if anybody wants to view the MS security bulletin and/or MSKB number or entire file name/location, all you have to do is place your mouse cursor on top of the link, and the entire URL will appear in your browser's status bar at the bottom [depending on which browser is used, and particular browser settings]. Or if you like, just right-click on a link and select Properties. Then copy + paste it into Notepad/etc if you wish. I found this way to be effective for most users out there. I started posting updates ~ 9 years ago, and it seems to work ok so far. But if anyone has suggestions on how to improve this update posting system [and if I have the time to do it], please post here your ideas/templates/etc, and I'll carefully consider them. Please consider the fact that a single change to my system of posting updates requires me to change all wording for all updates at my site [all MS OSes], and I probalby have a few thousand updates that would need to be changed. Please consider the amount of time and work necessary to do this. Hope this helps I find your pages invaluable and have done over the past several years, I am sure there are countless win9x users who would like to thank you for all your hard work you have put into making our life so much easier. So no I for one have no issues whatsoever in your sites construct It would be nice to have a sticky thread in this forum concerning any current/forthcoming security issues that may or may not affect us if and when they are found, and to have professional opinions from you guys concerning each ones severity. All the best
  18. Thats what i was thinking, except i was going to try to make my own image-based install, then have other rars decompress on first boot. this might cause hardware/driver problems though, so idk. wininit and batch files sounds good. ^_^ Batch files would also enable us to have a selective install without preadded system and program bloat, it could also gives us the ability to choose win95 or me shell, have or replace internet explorer with firefox, off by 1 (lower security risks) choose beween media player or media player classic and have a firewall choice add other things here. If it is modular users only need to have the packages they choose to and do not need to download setup cabs which they might never use and certainly would not want sitting in their system folder doing nothing apart from increasing os folder size ( the relevant updated additional system files being added as required, the core ones at a basic level during first setup). Plus we dont tread on any eula issues) Just my pennies worth If Carling did an 98TE operating system
  19. Would good old batch files and wininit.ini be useful to perform an option the user selects, the required files could then be just rars split into the relevant packs available to select (982me etc). The options menu being available on first bootup after a basic install., or on first runup after setup is complete. Perhaps save any major headaches with the cab files
  20. Goto www.bootdisk.com/ if you have lost your bootdisk. Have you access to other pcs that you can plug your harddrive you want 9x installing into. Is the hard drive bootable or does it already contain an operating system 5 yrs since I touched 98!!! Welcome back I dare say with the intelligent people here we can soon have you up and running again
  21. I found doslfn http://www.geocities.com/jadoxa/doslfn/ along with unrar http://www.rarlab.com/rar_add.htm using Cwsdpmi.exe http://clio.rice.edu/cwsdpmi/ very handy when i squeezed a network enabled win9x onto two and a bit floppies. Autoexec.bat xmsdsk.exe 20000 w: /y /t /c2 Cwsdpmi.exe md W:\mindows copy command.com W:\mindows set COMSPEC=W:\mindows copy autoexe1.bat w: w:\autoexe1.bat Autoexec1.bat copy Mindows3.rar w: @Echo Please insert Disk 1 pause copy Mindows1.rar w: @Echo Please insert Disk 2 pause copy Mindows2.rar w: @Echo Please Boot Disk pause a:\doslfn w: a:\unrar x -o+ w:\Mindows1.rar All the above freeware, I did find a higher compression utility but cannot find it at the minute. Hope some of this helps
  22. A custom windows setup component install would be awesome, something along the line of 98lites embedded os (not the normal 98lite). With the ability to shrink windows down to a level where only required files, registry keys are installed. Less files etc less vulnerability along with a rock solid os. Having the ability to switch the shell between 95 and 98 at will (for usb bluetooth support etc),an option for 982me,xp software support, greater than 512mb and LLXX`s large hd support would be so handy. Especially if it is modular. It would certainly breathe some life into the old girl yet and be the envy of many alternate os users who need a greater space for just their chosen operating system than we would, for a total chosen package. I have several 9x os`s on one hard drive which i select via a modified floppy to select the one i want to do a certain task with. A tiny ram one for ebay, a multimedia capture/convert one, a general messing about one etc In the words of the immortal frog song win or lose sink or swim one thing is certain we never give in side by side hand in hand we all stand together
  23. Quote KingAuther "I tried the two little softwares that claim to delete IE & OE from your machine.. but quickly found that deleting those integral softwares is deleting some of the needed integral portions of the Windows operating system.. and had to format and reload... You can't run Windows without IE & OE intact". The computer this message is being written on has no i.e or o.e on it at all, none ,nada. It sends receives email, browses the web, burns cds, runs p2p,plays encodes movies music etc etc It does nearly everything that my other pcs do, those run with the 98shell and only 1 of them has i.e or o.e on it. That purely because the software writers were being to lazy to create their own interface. Replying to Question about 98SE vulnerability, get behind a nat firewall, do not use bugged software for messaging ,browsing the web and finally run from a cd or purely in ram, first way cannot be altered and the second ignores any changes made on the next system boot
  24. Spot on If you want to build a rock steady system, adding only programs that you need and begin to learn how the os ticks, mindows is a great starting place. With it the install process has become a lot more transparent (if you look at the setup files), file dependancies etc became clearer. As LLXX says it is a building block to do whatever you want with. Just add your imagination
