Why would those, who don't have free-speech at home, be given free-speech at the international arena? More of a rhetorical question.3 points

Inside the xpi file of IP Geolocator, one could restrict the size of the toolbar icon to a certain, desired value. I did that several times in terms of legacy extensions, and I assume it could be similar when it comes to webextensions. My credo: What doesn't fit, is made to fit. PS: And thanks for noticing my "typo"! TBH, it wasn't a typo but German spelling. Suddenly, and for no reason at all, I was of the opinion that the word interval is spelled the same in English as in German. Stuff happens! Dementia?3 points

I think I have an idea how the problem with the size of the the toolbar flag might be fixed when using the Photonic theme in Serpent 52. If the standard theme is selected, the flag is sized correctly. So, it seems to be a problem caused by the Photonic theme. Anyway! Interested in fixing it?2 points

I chose to ignore my Ignored Users list and take a peek at your post, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t calculated to offend me!?? As an MSFN member, there is little I can do about the lack of basic freedoms in China or Russia. The “free-speech” I was referring to was speech right here at MSFN. On June 2 an MSFN member with an actual Russian flag directed a question about Kaspersky to the only member who has reported success with it (or indeed with any real-time antivirus) on Vista x64 with extended kernel, and neither member was harassed by the usual suspects, which is highly commendable! Evidently it is not Russians who must be harassed for daring to mention Kaspersky here, but only an American such as myself who doesn’t show the proper respect for government warnings? Here in the USA, cigarette packs have featured government warnings for perhaps half a century, but I still smoke. Every road has a posted speed limit, but I still drive somewhat faster than that (albeit not nearly as fast as I drove in my youth). It seems to me that Kaspersky’s critics don’t show the proper respect for test results by independent labs such as AV Test in Germany, where Kaspersky has long been a top product. Everything else seems anecdotal to me. Let me remind you that NATO is not at war (and if we ever are, may God help us).1 point

I'm happy to report that Windows Server 2012 R2 updates work on Windows 8.1 ... This is the package for August: KB5029312 (It's 64 bit only from now on).1 point

Use the export and import feature of the certificate manager! You can delete all corrupted certificates, export them in a working system and then import them in your system to be repaired.1 point

789.92 is incorrect. I had two number error when transcribing the values, but my sum value is correct. Maybe, you should calculate the sum once again. It's not that hard. ∑ = 780.561 point

1 - You're welcome, the acid blue UI is absolutely ugly, I agree ! Try to use the dark theme from another release . 2 - This is normal for chrome.1 point

Thanks for the good tests ! So looks like the memory "bug" is XP related. Well, from what I remember, it may be due to the fact of your GPU being gen-7 and/or a poor combination with the old drivers, I was able to get the GPU process to boot through the commandline switch --enable-gpu , without it you won't get any Hardware video decode at all ! But then again, my GPU is from the 9th gen. and I use the newer drivers I modded myself. https://msfn.org/board/topic/184056-breakthrough-p2-new-pascal-special-microsoft-nvidia-driver-port-for-vista-x64/page/ There is also my P1 tutorial (more complex) on how to cook new Nvidia drivers for Vista without the extended kernel. Also, VP9 , HEVC, VP8, H265 are still not accelerated because you would need at least GTX1080 or smth like that.1 point

I was just curious because he didn't say was it x64 or x86 Vista. (The behaviour might differ!) I ask any type of on-topic questions I want, and you don't have to comment on everything, lol. I obviously don't have to explain anything to you, I do this only because I consider myself to be polite and of good manners.1 point

What about RAM ? Also amost 1GB with an emply page too ? PS. You need this update for DX11 (Windows6.0-KB971512) on Vista for all these to work, it's achievable. I just turn it off intentionally. I only use hardware Skia. Also, you would need to force gpu usage via flags, but the ones you already used is a good start. Check if your chrome runs an additional GPU process.1 point

92 ?! What good would it be ? It's outdated by ages now, and isn't even finished ! I also have my doubts , will it ever be ? I read about 102, but it's also more than 7-8 months old. Don't forget, the current us Chrome 111. https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsxp/comments/vgwnaw/chrome_102_now_works_on_windows_xp/1 point

Looks like a joke or an error . When I bought one of my Vista PCs in 2009 it came with DDR3 already. At it was not an ultra gaming PC. Absolutely not. Do you and the others started to think what's next ? Maybe start do dig another newer browser for XP ?1 point
-
Is this considered to be normal for chinese made browsers produced in 2020 to consume almost 1gig of RAM with 1 empty page ? Either of you ever wondered what's inside ? Maybe debug ? I mean , @AstroSkipper is right - this is not normal, and I think he was the first who noticed.1 point

On my old Windows XP computer, I use all my browsers in single-process mode only. Even Mypal 68. Firefox 1.0 was released 2002 with tab browsing. And old Opera versions did also tab browsing, even in 2001 and earlier.1 point

For the dark page rendering use these flags : --enable-features=WebContentsForceDark --force-dark-mode The last one is for the UI in "normal" chrome. But it will not help with the most modern websites, for example imdb. Why ? because the engine of this browser is outdated, yeah , sorry to say it. But if use thee same flags with, say chrome 102 - it will render them dark. About the UI of this chinese one, its' for the author to answer.1 point

And I have a feeling when someone simply doesn't know what to answer, they just switching the subject. I'm not sure why you felt like a dead horse , lol. Anyways, I'm sorry you felt like a dead horse . And your poor head, geez.1 point

First read and then write is always a good idea: This thread is about VPN in Windows XP. Nice cat, but unfortunately, completely misplaced and off-topic! And by the way, I already have a cat, and I do really know what to do with my time if I'm not wasting it in unnecessary posts. But in this case, I'm going to make an exception, just for you. I hope you appreciate that.1 point

What world do you live in? If not American, then you have to use Russian servers? I haven't heard so much nonsense in a long time. Since you don't seem to know anything else, I'll give you a tip. We live in Europe and I prefer European servers. Pretty logical, isn't it?1 point
-
More than very slow. I have tested it in contrast to you as it seems. I am interested in real facts and not in subjective opinions. Connections to American servers only are not a good choice. For many reasons!1 point
-
The description "both work well" is a very subjective thing. Unsolicited connection to American servers and a connection speed beyond good and evil rather mean "both don't work well". Which means you didn't test it. A few years ago is not today, unfortunately.1 point

This topic is about VPN in Windows XP. Browsec VPN is an VPN extension for Firefox browsers 91.0.0 and later. In Windows XP, there are no browsers which this extension can be installed in. Therefore, I do not understand such recommendation. It is rather misleading and off-topic.1 point

@artenox! There are countries where security, privacy, and anonymity still matter to the users of a VPN service. In some others, unfortunately, all is already lost. And, as far as other countries like Saudi Arabia are concerned, you don't have to go that far! Anyway, one thing is crystal clear, VPNBook is definitely crap! @retrotrash69! The choice of a VPN service depends on what is important to its user. Free VPN services means very low speed, in many cases unstable connections, no privacy, no security, no anonymity, and definitely a lack of a "no log policy". BTW, most of these free VPN "services" are limited in their bandwith, data volume, the used protocols, the number of available servers, and so on. If that is not a problem for you, then you can use such "services" like VPNBook. Anyway, each to their own! Here is a link for further information of VPN's disadvantages: https://www.top10vpn.com/what-is-a-vpn/vpn-disadvantages/ Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point
-
Really? I would not have thought that! Okay, all joking aside! Anyone who uses such a service is no longer anonymous, and in countries with censorship, it is easy to find out who the user is.1 point
-
Here is a quotation of the Privacy Policy from their website ("privacy" ): Your connection will be logged. Therefore, this service has to be considered unsafe and should actually be avoided. As I wrote in my posts above, using free VPN services means very low speed, in many cases no stable connections, no privacy, no security, no anonymity, and definitely a lack of a "no log policy". So why should a user choose such a service? Just to get a foreign IP? That's simply nonsense and definitely not the idea of VPN. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

Somehow it just stopped asking for updates , the issue resolved , thanks again !1 point
-
It is quite unpredictable . Usually it pops up right at the start of the programme. I do not have this line at all . I only have "UpdateCheckingPeriod" with only one digit available, so it seems they don't want me to disable it completely , only to change the period . This is with 7.3.1 , yes , as I told earlier I made a frankensteined version with the main .exe being 7.3.1 . I searched all lines with the word "update" , opened in Hex , nothing even remotely similar.1 point

Oh , that's bad . I'm kinda gamer too . Are there any other alternatives ? (please not from kaspersky or the such) , thank you.1 point

Totally agree with you . Though some time ago I literally saved a slow notebook with 4GB DDR2 667Mhz memory using a fast external HDD connected via eSATA. It was used for huge video files editing.1 point
-
Says who ? If one has a good HDD - it's absolutely fantastic . Besides , many users have SDD nowadays. Anyway , I tend to disable it too ( in most cases ) because I have quite fast RAM .1 point

You're very welcome to try it with NT 4.0 and Win 98 then and report back to us.1 point

A quick look at the programme and I see this missing function : K32GetProcessMemoryInfo . I haven't dug any deeper , but this is enough to say they are lying ! I'm wondering what they did to disable it on Windows 8.1.1 point

@VistaEX, have you considered vLite to cut off the bloat from ISO before the installation ? It really helps , you should try. I can send Vlite ready-made presets. P.S. to Vistapocalypse. Do you see the key words in the topic's name ? "The best way" , so in the previous topic he just needed help (like urgent, emergency) , but here he wants to find the best way . Well , maybe he wants a batch script to disable all of the junk services at once , smth like that , like in the best possible (maybe the fastest) way. By the way , I didn't see any advice from you to this poor fella in that topic . How come ? Maybe some good advice from a long time Vista user ? No ? And I think our glorious moderators do know how to do their job , they will delete , if needed ! Also , in almost every topic he starts , I see lots of mockery from some certain members . And you , do you have smth to say on-topic ? He would really appreciate . Regarding trying different Windows , he is young and still learning , nothing wrong with that.1 point

Hi , I've come across this info "On Windows 7 and later operating systems, the .NET Framework retrieves culture data from the operating system ... The CultureNotFoundException is thrown if the operating system is unable to find the culture..." Is that true ? Isn't that why I can't solve this problem with the game ? Any other way to "tell" the game what culture is needed ? Thanks https://forums.asp.net/t/2080862.aspx?CultureNotFoundException+can+occur+when+culture+is+set+to+auto+in+web+config1 point

I honesly didn't do any research regarding this issue earlier . But as far as I can see now , it's impossible - It has something to do with the famous "meltdown" patch . Oh , by the way , what do you need all those updates for ? It's likely they don't do any good . I run absolutely virgin SP2 for my internet PC for more than 11 years and SP1 for gaming (almost 13 years). The only updates I installed is what was really needed (like DX11 for the games) , VCRedist and Net 4.5.1 (the fastest for Vista in my experience). Recently I installed the one that win32 suggested, just for testing , I will delete it later , I can't say it is bad . It somewhat improved the sound in SP2 (which is good since SP2 sounds much worse than SP1) , but at the same time my boot speed is slower now. Yet again , I don't see any marginal improvement from installing updates. You're better off with a good firewall .1 point

Hello , the guy wrote " I have updated my Vista till Jan. 2020" . Perhaps this is the issue.1 point

Exactly ! I have successfuly launched two very popular programs , though some other tricks of my own were used too (in addition to this wonderful kernel). There is NO way I'm discussing it here. I think it's better you ask questions through mail directly , I mean mail-mail , not here. Just notify me , 'cause I always forget to check it. P.S. Oh , and I think it would be wise to change names , giving a slight hint about the original . They will have no grounds to ban , at least.1 point

You know , actually I'm not surprised at all , esp. with all that what's going on in the world after 2001. I have a suggestion , how about we start to make spelling errors > like "ckhromyum", "gugle" ,I guess they are looking for key-words , aren't they ? What do you about that ?1 point

I'm not French , all of my settings are en-GB , English, keyboard and local too. Edit : tried to set everything to US (region , keyboard, location) no luck.1 point

Hello , thanks for the advice , the thing is - I never said that I (personally) use any Antivirus at all , someone asked and I just said 3.5.1 works because I know this for sure. As for me , I don't trust any "antivirus" . The best antivirus is brain. :-) Don't you agree ?1 point
