Here's the patch that can be applied on top of latest revision of Rufus source code to restore Windows Vista support and the executable (version 3.1.1321). I experienced strange bug where the code that is supposed to prevent DLL sideloading causes UI elements to lose Aero look and reverts to classic, so the patch removes that. The mitigation doesn't have much value IMO, if you're worried that the program will load malicious DLL from its folder, then you've already lost by getting such DLL in the first place. Still, the relation between UI look and the DLL search directory is odd. At first I thought older version of comctl32.dll was getting loaded, that's not the case though. Calling SetDefaultDllDirectories does it. It's one of those functions that were added with an update and the issue appears to be exclusive to Vista. Unless there's a separate update addressing that.4 points

It seems that the recent server crash brought back a bug. When switching between pages of threads, using the page buttons, you get this: A spinny loading thing forever and ever. One must refresh the page and then the correct page of the thread is shown. Can you fix this again? Thank you.1 point

I consider, privilege of my excess old age, which this application or software deserves to be supported .. much more ..1 point

There are some extra dependencies and I'm no expert on Windows API. I noticed that for Vista, those 2 missing functions in kernel32.dll were originally implemented in psapi.dll. Microsoft moved them to kernel32.dll in Windows 7 and since that OS onwards, the versions in psapi.dll just redirect to real functions in kernel32.dll which Rufus tries to use, but they don't exist on Vista, so we can use the ones in psapi.dll.1 point

Do you use Winaero Tweaker at all? It can be downloaded from www.winaero.com I believe that it can be use to reduce the border sizes, which, may render the result more to your liking. To literally delete the borders, it would ideally be done in PhotoShop. I can try to work something up for you but I need at least 24 hours to do so. ======================================================================== Do you not like the borders because you find the color of each to be different from the top (titlebar)? If yes, then you may want first to consider using the following registry file (01_DWM_007.reg) to match the colors. If you do use it, I highly recommend that you do a Restore Point first as a precaution against something unanticipated going wrong (it shouldn't, but better to be safe than sorry). After I apply it, assuming I haven't deactivated/disabled Windows UAC, I run regedit.exe (and then close it) in order to see the changes. ======================================================================== Also, I have attached a second registry file ([WIN_7] METRICS.reg) in case you wish to reduce the titlebar button sizes to appear closer to those of Windows 7. Again, I recommend a Restore Point prior to its usage, and I usually restart my PC after I apply it rather than logging off and back on. Edit: [WIN_10] METRICS.reg is if you wish to revert back to the default Windows 10 metrics. ======================================================================== Keep me posted - I'll be checking back in later today, ciao for now. [WIN_7] METRICS.reg 01_DWM_007.reg [WIN_10] METRICS.reg1 point

The 'Theme atlas image' should be named: win7rp14393_R6.png The 'Theme atlas layout' should be named: win7rp14393_R6.png.layout They need to be placed in the same folder. Also, you may need to check the file property for each file in order to ensure that the download isn't blocked by Windows Security.1 point

... OK, I finally caved in and installed the 30-day trial of Internet Download Manager (IDM) on my Vista machine, just to perform some tests... Latest version of the app is 6.31build1; the 3 available browser integration extensions are : idmmzcc.xpi => This is a legacy extension, current version is 7.3.110, its install.rdf mentions Firefox versions 1.5 - 26.0 and Pale Moon versions 3 -25 idmmzcc2.xpi => Legacy extension, current version is 6.27.7; install.rdf file mentions Firefox versions 27.0 - 52.x, but does not specify any Pale Moon versions; however, its chrome.manifest file has line overlay chrome://browser/content/browser.xul chrome://idm-mozilla_cc/content/overlay.xul application={8de7fcbb-c55c-4fbe-bfc5-fc555c87dbc4} that application ID is for Pale Moon. idmmzcc3.xpi => Webextension format, current version is 6.31; manifest.json indicates strict_min_version": "53.0a1" (Firefox 53.0+) . I then tested those extensions with several of the "roytam1" browser forks... 1. New Moon 27.9.1a1 (fork/rebrand of PaleMoon_unstable 27.9.1a1) (32-bit), buildID=20180615115719 v7.3.110 can be installed via the Moon Tester Tool 1.1.6 palemoon extension, the installation is successful with IDM context menu entries being correctly populated, but the extension does not communicate with main IDM app, hence integration fails v6.27.7 installs successfully on its own (without MTT) and results in a fully working browser integration with New Moon (as it was reported...) 2. New Moon 28.0.0a4 (fork/rebrand of PaleMoon_unstable 28.0.0a4) (32-bit), buildID=20180615233117 v7.3.110 can be installed via the Moon Tester Tool 1.1.6 palemoon extension, the installation is successful with IDM context menu entries being correctly populated, but the extension does not communicate with main IDM app, hence integration fails v6.27.7 is itself incompatible with NM28, but can be forcibly installed via MTT; sadly, as reported already, the installation is successful, with IDM context menu entries being correctly populated, but the extension does not communicate with main IDM app, hence integration fails At this stage, I can't tell whether the blame is to be put on the extension or the (alpha state) browser... Perhaps it should be worthwhile to report it to the Moonchild devs (but say you tried it on official PM28) and emphasize IDM integration works with PM27... 3. Serpent 52.9.0 (fork/rebrand of current Basilisk/UXP-T2) (2018-06-18) (32-bit), buildID=20180618002732 v7.3.110 is incompatible with the browser and can't be installed! v6.27.7 is compatible and installs successfully; results in a fully working browser integration v6.31 (WE) is incompatible with the browser and can't be installed! 4. Serpent 55.0.0 (fork/rebrand of deprecated Basilisk/UXP-T1, aka Moebius) (2018-06-16) (32-bit), buildID=20180616141358 v7.3.110 and v6.27.7 (legacy XUL format) are both incompatible and won't install! However, v6.31 (webextension format) is compatible and installs successfully; results in a fully working browser integration There you go, if you are a paying customer of IDM, I have listed your working browser options as far as IDM integration is concerned... Serpent 52.9.0, built on the same platform as New Moon 28, has similar (dare I say better) rendering engine to NM28, so your "site" is bound to also load fine on Serpent 52.9.0 (probably on Serpent 55.0.0, too) ... With the Serpent forks, you get IDM integration as an added bonus...1 point

***Updated 09/29/2018 for OS Build 17134.320*** You may need to obtain a file known as 'dwmcore.pdb' in order for Aero Glass to work on Windows 10 v1803. In the past, this file was included in offline symbol installers which were usually published by Microsoft when a major update to Windows 10 was released. Unfortunately, they no longer do this, but fear not, for I MAY (or may not) have a 'fix' for you. --------------------------------------------- Note: I assume that you already have an older version of AeroGlass already installed on your PC before you try this. And also, I assume you know how to temporarily disable it via Task Scheduler. 1) Copy and paste ONE of the following links (pertaining to your build of Windows 10) into your internet browser: Windows 10 (OS Build 17134.112): http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/dwmcore.pdb/BB4E76032DC0CEA58D46D391A2B4C9101/dwmcore.pdb Windows 10 (OS Build 17134.137): http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/dwmcore.pdb/D1149747277D9F7BA3C1C34E145203531/dwmcore.pdb Windows 10 (OS Build 17134.285): http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/dwmcore.pdb/7E2FFBA889DA4A0EEEC178DF672CE1B81/dwmcore.pdb Windows 10 (OS Build 17134.320): http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/dwmcore.pdb/599E1538C2CCF8ECE275EE95CC1EE9C31/dwmcore.pdb 2) Doing so should cause a file with a very long sequence of characters - with a BLOB extension - to be downloaded to your PC. 3) Rename the file to 'dwmcore.pdb' (obviously without the quotes). 4) Now, open your file explorer and head over to your AeroGlass folder, which, should typically be located in C:\AeroGlass and then browse to C:\AeroGlass\symbols\dwmcore.pdb\. 5) Once there, create a new folder and make sure to name it as follows: Windows 10 (OS Build 17134.112): BB4E76032DC0CEA58D46D391A2B4C9101 Windows 10 (OS Build 17134.137): D1149747277D9F7BA3C1C34E145203531 Windows 10 (OS Build 17134.285): 7E2FFBA889DA4A0EEEC178DF672CE1B81 Windows 10 (OS Build 17134.320): 599E1538C2CCF8ECE275EE95CC1EE9C31 6) Open the new folder you just created and copy + paste the BLOB file which you renamed to 'dwmcore.pdb' back in step 3. 7) Now try to run the newest DEBUG build of AeroGlass released on 06/17/2018 (make sure the 'DWMGlass.dll' is copy + pasted in C:\AeroGlass). ------------------------------------------------ I don't usually write tutorials, therefore, I apologize if it appears that way. I'll be around to try and help best I can if you have further questions. *** Thank you to BigMuscle for his exceptional work on continuing to make Aero Glass possible on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10. I shall donate to the cause again later this week. Thanks again BigMuscle! *** ------------------------------------------------- Lastly, if anyone is interested in looking, I have attached a screenshot of one of my laptop's work in progress theme running Windows 10 v1803 + AeroGlass. BigMuscle clearly hasn't abandoned his work. Microsoft is making it a pain in the a** for him to keep up with their slew of changes.1 point
