Just downloaded DSL[**** small linux] ISO last night, 49.1mb, 4 hrs 7 mins. Not to bad for dial-up

Nice, like a few months ago I was downloading something and my kB/s got up to 12kB/s , and it stayed like that for a few hours, I was so shocked I took a screenshot of it, ill try to find it lol.

Modem compression. Even in the very best case over dialup, 64kbps is the limit, more often 56kbps. The throughput speed is higher since the modem is compressing the data; the actual speed of the receive is probably 5-6KB/s.

I have used the freshdevice DL manager a while ago, but it was too buggy for my taste. They may have fixed it by now, I don't know.

I don't remember the biggest file, but once I was online for over 8 days (!!) uninterrupted on a $10/month dialup line.

As an aside, I'm using a Diamond Supra 2750 PCI modem, mfgd in 96[AFAIK] that works better[faster troughput] than any of newer modems I've tried. Newer is not always better

my friend chozo used to go on for weeks at a time over dialup

i dont know about you guys, but around my area dialup wasnt even an option because of noise on the phone lines. my dad fixed that (turns out it was the builders fault, they didnt hook up the lines properly) and after that, the highest download speed i could get would be aroun 3 kb/sec. before , we couldnt even stay online long enough. just kept gettin kicked off ever 5 ferkin minutes. but anyway, the largest file i dled on dialup was around 20mb and it took just over 8 agonising hours of being kicked off and having to dial in again. not to mention the phone bill was increased because of it. stupid me lol about 2 years after that, we opted for rogers high speed lite. at first it was 32kb/sec, now its over 120kb/sec and we're still with the same plan o.O at first i thought i had accidentally uncapped my modem (how i do not know) but then we later found out that rogers had upped everyone because bell was going to release a newer, higher speed plan for less money.

I used to download linux iso's, so 625MB x2, for redhat and such... that was WAY back... I've had broadband since September 17th, 2001...

Can you believe in places like Japan, EVERYONE has broadband and it costs about as much as our dial-up. Im gonna just get broadband on again for a month or two and download everything I need, just purchased like 300 dvd-r's.

PS: has anyone tried that new Verizon dsl plan thats like $15 a month? any good?

in japan..well, tokyo at least, you can get ~28 mbps broadband and voip from yahoo for about 3838 yen (~34$)

for an extra 1000 yen (~8$) you can get a wifi router.
