codejunkie Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 (edited) I just got a new Athlon 64 system to replace my old Athlon XP but which one is faster? does the 64bit make any difference? well I put it to the test with PCMark04 (v1.3.0)Athlon XP systemAthlon XP 3200+ @ 2200Mhz (Aero 7+ heatsink with delta 8cm fan on top)Asus Radeon X800 XT PE AGP (Omega 2.6.25a) Arctic Cooler2GB of DDR400 (4x 512MB) - MATRIX2x 80GB Maxtor D/max 9 7200RPM 8MB Cache Striped Boot! on VIA SATAAsus A7V880 (Bios v1.08, Dual Channel)Levicom 420WattsAthlon 64 3000+ systemAthlon 64 3000+ @ 1809MhzMSI Radeon X700 Pro PCIe2GB of DDR400 (4x 512MB) - Elixir2x 160GB Maxtor D/max 9 7200RPM 8MB Cache Striped Boot! on SI31142x 160GB Maxtor D/max 9 7200RPM 8MB Cache Mirror on NF42x 300GB Maxtor D/max 10 7200RPM 16MB Cache Striped on NF4MSI Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra (Bios v1.40, Dual Channel) - SLi, Why bother? sorry I don't like NV GFX Cards, HL2 ALL THE WAY!TT PurePower 680WattAthlon 64 4000+ systemAthlon 64 4000+ @ 2400Mhz - Cool & Quite Enabled & Minimal Power ManagementMSI Radeon X700 Pro PCIe2GB of DDR400 (2x 1024MB)2x 160GB Maxtor D/max 9 7200RPM 8MB Cache Striped Boot! on SI31142x 160GB Maxtor D/max 9 7200RPM 8MB Cache Mirror on NF42x 300GB Maxtor D/max 10 7200RPM 16MB Cache Striped on NF4MSI Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra (Bios v1.40, Dual Channel)TT PurePower 680Watt---NEW---Sempron 64 systemSempron 3000+ @ 1800Mhz (Stock Cooler)Asus Radeon X800 XT PE AGP (ATI CCC 6.2 set to Optimal Performance) Arctic Cooler2GB of DDR400 (4x 512MB) - Elixir1x 80GB Maxtor D/max 9 7200RPM 8MB Cache boot! on SiS 965LAsus A7S-MX (Bios v1.014, Single Channel Memory)LINNCO Model HL-300K...not sure on Wattage acer Aspire 5102WMLiTuron64 X2 TL50 @ 1.6Ghz x2acer 'Navarro' with xpress 1100 (CPU-Z 1.38 reports it as Xpress 200)1GB of DDR2-4300 (1GB - Single Channel for the time being)1x 120GB Hitachi 5400RPM 8MB Cache Bootacer 'Navarro' (Bios 2.60, Single Channel Memory)PCMark04 SettingsTest = AllOther open appsNOD32 2.50.19ActiveSync 4.0.0DAEMON Manager 3.47ResultsAthlon XP systemOverAll = 3814CPU = 3581Mem = 2299GFX = 8233HDD = 5034Athlon 64 3000+ systemOverAll = 3707CPU = 3438Mem = 3777GFX = 5006HDD = 5707Athlon 64 4000+ systemOverAll = 4526CPU = 4019Mem = 4638GFX = 4370HDD = 5280Sempron 64 system-----NOTE-----This system is NOT setup the same dure to it being alot newer aswell as verious bits of software being updated..IE NOD32 2.50.25, Daemon Tools v4.03, .NET Framework v2.0....ATi CCC Drivers...diffrent reg tweaks..or the lack of.The boot drive is not a Striped--END-NOTE--OverAll = 3663CPU = 3332Mem = 3332 <-- beats the AthlonXP 3200+ running DDR400 Dual Channel....while only having DDR400 Single ChannelGFX = 7679HDD = 4511 <-- NOT Striped, single driveNew laptopTuron64 X2 TL50 acer laptopOverAll = 3958CPU = 4262Mem = 3397 <-- beats the AthlonXP & Sempron64, see what it can do with Dual Channel running on 667Mhz (DDR2-6400)GFX = 1192 <-- Xpress 1100 around the same as my old laptop with a Radeon Mobility 9000 Pro 64MBHDD = 3471My thoughts on my new systemIf the Athlon 64 was a 3200+ it would have between the Athlon XP in everything but GFX but that figures seeing it was X700-Pro PCIe VS X800-XT-PE AGP.The NForce4 currently help the Athlon 64 on its way when it comes to memory and HDD RAIDMy Athlon 64 computer is not for gaming, the Athlon XP 3200+ has that position now replacing my Athlon XP 2800+ mini pc which had a Radeon 9600 Pro, 1GB DDR400, 185GB Hitachi 7200 8cacheNow I have a computer that has a MASSIVE amount of potential (64-4000, FX55, FX57?)for the future instead of a MAX out Athlon XP system Edited September 4, 2007 by codejunkie
codejunkie Posted May 27, 2005 Author Posted May 27, 2005 get the 64<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Sorry?? get one?? how could I do the benchmarks with out a Athlon 64??? Your all crazy
Marthax Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 The Athlon 64 is much better for handling multitasking meaning that if you do several things at the same time, Athlon 64 will win as it's 64-bit. Gaming performance is a completely another thing as the graphic card makes the big difference here. Athlon 64 isn't the best way to go when gaming but, since your CPU is at such a high speed compared to the Athlon XP I would most certainly choose 64.Of course, I assume that you already use XP 64-bit version which is needed to assure maximum performance.
SiMoNsAyS Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 i personally preffer the 32bits setup, the cheapest.i've a 3000+ (2,3ghz). in sandra 2k5, results show a better perfomance than for example a p4 3,2ghz extreme edition.at the moment there's no program that can take full advantage of a 64bits processor.
Marthax Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 yeah, that's true except win 64 of course . And that on the other hand, can be pretty nice. I mean, to have 64 bit support when you to several things simulanously in windows. I agree with you SiMoNsAyS, that XP is so much cheaper. I also have a Athlon XP (2400+) and it's great and so cheap but, if you compare those systems that codejunkie was telling us about, 32-bit don't stand a chance in "combat" When it comes to P4, Athlon XP owns those CPU's.
codejunkie Posted June 1, 2005 Author Posted June 1, 2005 since your CPU is at such a high speed compared to the Athlon XP I would most certainly choose 64.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Come again??Athlon 64 Clocked @ 1809MhzAthlon 32 Clocked @ 2200MhzThats 391Mhz to the Athlon XP (32)
Marthax Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Exactly, that's what I mean. I didn't mean that it's faster than the XP, just that It's pretty close and besides, it's a 64 which means that a 1800 mhz is most certainly faster than a 32-bit running at 2200.
puntoMX Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 Also, think about SSE3 witch comes with a new cored AMD 64 (Venice and up). Soon there will be Semprons with it (or they are already out? ). PCI-E isn´t faster then AGP, it seems to be a bit slower in Benchmarks...But replacing a 2800+ with a 3200+, I would wait a few months more...
codejunkie Posted February 12, 2006 Author Posted February 12, 2006 I have recently built a new AMD64 mechine...this time in a Micro ATX case...man what a squize!Sempron 64 systemSempron 3000+ @ 1800Mhz (Stock Cooler)Asus Radeon X800 XT PE AGP (ATI CCC 6.2 set to Optimal Performance) Arctic Cooler512MB of DDR333 CL2.5 (1x 512MB) - TwinMos1x 80GB Maxtor D/max 9 7200RPM 8MB CacheAsus A7S-MX (Bios v1.014, Single Channel Memory)LINNCO Model HL-300K...not sure on Wattage Sempron 64 systemOverAll = 3619CPU = 3326Mem = 2854GFX = 7644HDD = 4506I'd try it with better memory but I cant get to the sockets verywell there hidden under the DVD-RW .... Need some more PC3200 Elixir DDR SDRAM... I have pulled all the Matrix DDR400 from my Athlon XP and replaced it with half the memory from the Athlon64 (Elixir DDR400)...not realy tested it much but was a little unstable before
LLXX Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 64-bit isn't really the deciding factor here, as software is still predominantly 32-bit. My opinion is that 32-bits is going to stay for a long time, since only large mainframes and supercomputers have 64-bit data widths. Many other supercomputers are still 32-bit.The deciding factor is how efficiently the CPU processes instructions. It's slightly better on the Ath64, that's why it runs at a lower clock speed and can still compete closely with the AthXP.
