Adding More me Files?

Recommended Posts

tim_horton:

Theres over 6,014 Files in 98se the killer replacement adds 614 is there any more usefull me files that could be added like more core enhanements and such or does 614 just about cover the amount of Me usualbe files in me?

You need to understand that it doesn't matter how many files are on the WinME Setup CD, the only thing that matters is how many can ACTUALLY BE USED with Win98SE. :)

I've been doing this for almost 4 years, so I've pretty much reached the limit [615]. Even if it were 6000 or more, it doesn't matter.

All it matters is that the particular 615 *do* work with 98SE, and we should all be happy that they do, because this is the *only* way we can get a better/faster/etc 98SE. :)

I've spent countless hours testing just 1 or a small group of ME files on 98SE, and if they did work I've kept them, and then added them to my list.

That's how [if you have read the topic at my site] I came up with the NO-NO list [files you should NEVER replace].

BTW:

If you want to see the full lists [in plain TXT format] of all Win9x/ME installation files contained inside the CABs, please go to this page, and then download this ZIP [171 KB].

Hope this helps.

MDGx, i reached your site (pretty interesting, i'm reading your text files) by this board, and i'm about to try your 98se2me + 98seSP2b3 on my 32mb ram laptop.

is that a good idea? i'm looking for speed rather than functionality; so, do you recommend it?

This is entirely your choice.

98SE2ME is not only about speed, it improves/adds to the Win98SE OS in many ways.

See the guide:

http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S

to learn which files are replaced.

About 98SE SP 2.0 b3 + all other versions:

they belong to Gape.

Please see the appropriate MSFN topic for details:

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=37455

Hope this helps.

Tihiy:

Why i haven't seen anyb adding Me shell (SHELL32.DLL and stuff) files? To me it looks way better than 98.

Because unfortunately SHELL32.DLL and other system files from WinME are incompatible with Win98SE. :(

If you find a way to successfully replace SHELL32.DLL, please let me know.

Hope this helps.

Hm, don't have 98 system now, so try this in virtual system or make backups of everything!

1) Please make sure you have at least IE 5.5 installed.

2) Now, get these files from ME:

EXPLORER.EXE

COMDLG32.DLL

SHELL32.DLL

3) Run regsvr32 /u shdoc401.dll

3.5) Run regsvr32 /u shell32.dll

4) Exit to MS-DOS, delete shdoc401.dll & shd401lc.dll (from \system)

5) Replace explorer.exe in \windows, shell&comdlg32 in \system

6) Run windows

there are 3 ways:

(1): show taskbar&hangs - make "shell=command.com" in system.ini; proceed (3)

(2): show nothing&crash - oops! roll back everything! my fault!

(3): works great or almost no errors: run regsvr32 /i shell32.dll; reboot&let shell=explorer.exe if you've changed it.

if there are errors, try to run regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll, regsvr32 /i browseui.dll ...

hope this helps to great pack.

2MDGx, stop!

I recollected! To upgrade 98 shell to Me easier way, do the following:

extract layout*.inf & ieshell.inf from precopy1.cab to Me folder.

open ieshell.inf, change [Millshell_Inst] to [DefaultInstall].

Right-click it & select "Install". Select Me original files. Reboot. Enjoy!

[hm: you can forget previous post except number 4) - you can delete shdoc401.dll & shd401lc.dll for sure]

Very interesting:

I only have shdoc401.dll, and it obviously is not in use / or corrupted-- it has a folder icon... Maybe i should delete it??

I'm really tempted to try....wondering about this vis a vis the patched explorer.exe we now have....

First of all a big Thank You to Tihiy :thumbup

It did work :w00t:

i just got a real speed boost

I followed these steps

1) Please make sure you have at least IE 5.5 installed.

2) Now, get these files from ME:

EXPLORER.EXE

COMDLG32.DLL

SHELL32.DLL

3) Run regsvr32 /u shdoc401.dll

3.5) Run regsvr32 /u shell32.dll

4) Exit to MS-DOS, delete shdoc401.dll & shd401lc.dll (from \system)

5) Replace explorer.exe in \windows, shell&comdlg32 in \system

6) Run windows

And i ended up here
(3): works great or almost no errors:

The Start Menu/My Computer may act weired upon restarting. So make sure you have/make a Batch file with these entries on your desktop.

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

regsvr32 /i browseui.dll .

Run the batch file.

Restart Windows & Watch Windows Fly. :w00t:

To really benefit from "98SE2ME: Killer Replacements" you should try this method.

Hopefully MDGx will add this to the next version of "98SE2ME: Killer Replacements".
