matrix0978
Hey guys. Well i was just thinking of this the other day. Because my sister got home from college and she found out that someone broke into her apartment house and stole her laptop. And i was thinking, if there a way to make sometime of trojan on your computer that remotely shuts down the laptop the guy trys to turn it on? So he couldnt get any information or couldnt use it? And then you could also have ur laptops IP so you can trace it if they took it somewhere. BUt i was just wondering if the whole Security trojan thing was possible. MCT
actually, it'd be MUCH MUCH more earier to do a remote shutdown via VNC & then just do what u wanna do from inside vnc

MCT
or, u can make a password for your bios
SiMoNsAyS
or, u can make a password for your bios depending on your bios there are a LOT of programs that bypass that protection without the need of clearing the CMOS.best solution for me is the NTFS volume without sharing access and a strong password. just my 2 cents
Shotgun
The crooks have the laptop, so they have physical access to it. No security is possible with this situation. And if the crooks are really smart, they already disabled any security it had. No need for reformatting or clearing CMOS to do it. There are *lots* of resources to do just that. Spyder2k
Not recommending this as a solution, just sharing a little trick I learned recently. In XP "Start -> Run -> 'syskey' -> Update -> Password Startup"Master Password at logon screen, I've never seen anything that is able to bypass this (doesn't mean that it cant be bypassed). I'd say this complemented by encrypted files (which is I also don't recommend) is some really secure security then again they say the most secure pc is one buried beneath the earth
SiMoNsAyS
i think we aren't talking about a cracking group we're talking about common burglars.i'm sure if the administrator account is password protected and the volume is ntfs they won't be able to access anything
matrix0978
aight. Thanks for the information.
jaclaz
'm sure if the administrator account is password protected and the volume is ntfs they won't be able to access anythingActually that I know of there are at least 5 methods, a couple commercial and the other ones freeware to access an NTFS volume. And another 5 or 6 to discover/change/reset the Administrator password. The ONLY way to really protect a volume is NTFS encryption, quite safe, but VERY RISKY as in case of corruption can be a problem to recover data, (and by the way NOT unbreakable). They may be "commom burglars", but they surely have a "geek" friend that does this.jaclaz
XtremeMaC
i think ppl are missing the point, first of all in order to remotly do anything that burglar has to get on the internet. and in order for u to find him u need his ip, or mac address or computer name or etc etc. so i don't think u'll ever manage to shutdown the computer, even if u shut it down once, i'm sure he's not that stupid and he'll unplug the net cord and get on.applying an admin password also won't get u to anywhere, there are many ways to pass that..good luck, but best thing would be to get one of those cords that attach your laptop to the wall or something.is laptop the only thing missing? if so, r u suspecting anyone?, what kind of information did u have there? if its really really valuable and if that burglar knows it, he'll find a way in. if u're just worried that your credit card number or something like that was saved in your computer along with your pin number etc, call the bank to do the neccessary things. or/and go to local police dept.. matrix0978
Well she had her college reseme and applications for work. But i mean, if i thought there was a way to remotely access my computer from client VNC to my Server VNC on my computer. So right when the computer turns on, it will access my server VNC and i can control it. And also control and it will list what he is doing or typing. XtremeMaC
well when that computer turns on do u get notification or something?bc when that computer turns on at a different location the ip address will change.. but i dunno which vnc u're using so, if u're vnc's set to connect to your computer, (which might mean he can control yours) then yes i believe u can control it.. matrix0978
Well... No because i have the Server and ont he laptop will only have client which i can only comtroll the computer he is on. And if that is true and he turns on the computer, I will be able to get the IP address when it changes and Trace that IP to see if he took it out of the city. soldier1st
it's sad ppl have to do such a cruel crime just to get a laptop,if you can trace him n maybe get the laptop back n he can goto jail then thats good but don't count on it,if he knows what he is doing he won't plug it to the internet and he will already have gotten rid of the ability for you to gain remote access to it,if he knows what he is doing then thats the cause, the best thing to do is buy another laptop but get some security locks for it so no1 can steal it,i got a laptop(an older one but i don't have any security locks for it yet)yet it has valuable information on it but i keep it in my eyes 24/7,anywayhe probably did it cuzz he wanted a laptop n couldn't be a man and buy one,for example if i knew it had that on it i would know how to remove it n be safe but thats me,anyways good luck with trying to get it back...
