Windows XP doesn't want to install

Hi!

I've wanted to reset my old laptop to its original OS, Windows XP. When I download the distribution, burn it onto the disc, and try to start installation, it's just stuck on a black screen with a blinking cursor. If I will try to burn it to a flash drive, it starts the setup normally, but doesn't detect any hard drives. Fortunately, I've found the original restoration disc for my machine, downloaded it, and burned onto a disc, and it starts normally to the moment "Setup is starting Windows". Then it just bluescreens with error "STOP: c0000221 Unknown hard error %SystemRoot%\System32\ntdll.dll". If I try to use the flash drive, then it doesn't load the setup, and just comes with an error "Error loading operating system". What can I do?

 

Computer specs:

Name: Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro Edition V3405

CPU: Intel Celeron M 440 1.86 GHZ

RAM: 512MB

Hard disk: 60GB

DVD Drive

PCMCIA card slot

The STOP error may well be an issue with the actual CD or DVD burn, with modern, high speed CD/DVD burners it is not unheard of burned discs difficult to read on old readers. 

The flash drive issue is more likely to be connected to the way you partitioned/formatted it and in any case you cannot normally/easily use a CD/ISO image from a stick, and creating a stick capable of installing XP is complex.

There are a few tools for that, you should try first thing WinSetupFromUsb:

I forgot to say, but I used WinSetupFromUSB for flash drive, and I'm currently trying WinNTSetup. Thanks for replying!

 

(vista and 7 installing correctly only from flash drive)

Try this: Install WinXP from USB

For WinNTSetup you need to boot into a Windows system (mini-xp or similar) to use it. The author hasn't included essential exe files by Microsoft, and the "ADK" download that was called up by older versions compatible with WinXP is no longer available. I'm almost certain you cannot use the latest version, but have to use either 3.8.6 or 4.2.5 with the ADK files forbidden to be shared by the copyright police.

I like to use WinNTSetup and rely on bootable Windows that already exists, or secondary OS on the disk.

When Windows XP starts, it checks all DLLs and drivers for integrity, except the ones needed by the system loader to start the computer. To fix such errors, you can try to replace the file ntdll.dll in both folders, System32 and dllcache, by a fresh, working one! Your existing file is most likely corrupted due to any reason (bad image, scratched or badly copied CD or DVD, and so on). Anyway! Your installation medium is probably corrupted, and I wouldn't trust in any case. If one file is corrupted, there still might be more. Therefore, try to create a fresh medium maybe by using a different computer!
