UCyborg Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Win10 doesn't need high-end hardware, just sufficient RAM (was always a must for NT) and SSD disk if you're impatient.
j7n Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 What does OnlyOffice do that old versions of Microsoft Office don't? It's online and therefore inefficient with resources, and not isolated from the browser crashing. I don't think high end hardware is ever a good deal. Look what happened to great flagship processors a few years later, how their value dropped. There are diminishing returns from paying more money: you don't get double the speed for paying 2x. I would buy a good board with open slots for memory, and a processor one level higher than than the basic one. Then upgrade the PC a few years later cheaply. Always use software that is a generation or more older than the PC and it will fly. My bank recently updated to a flat and white design, but I can still connect with New Moon.

What happens if your internet is down, but you still have work to do in Microsoft Office? I am not a gamer, so I limit my CPUs to 65 watts, and my GPUs to 30 watts. It's not like the old days, when a Pentium CPU was noticeably faster than a 486 CPU. Since the Capacitor Plague is no longer a thing, you can easily get 10 years out of hardware.
j7n Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 What I was saying is buy a Pentium-66 and a board that can take an upgrade. Then swap in a Pentium-133 or whatever is the highest for that socket, when nobody wants those processors anymore. The best at the given time CPU has an astronomical price. Now look how you can get capable processors on Ali for €5 or €10, same things that used to cost €250. If you bought a 486, then you'd be locked into that.

Obviously your needs are not the same as mine,so...... I finished my tests today on Android Vivaldi browser. Vivaldi is very interesting despite having some (solvable) pros and cons. Unfortunately what I call “ultimate satisfaction to use a browser” is similar to my Opera Android. P.S. I probably got an improvement by adding custom filter lists. Do you have better alternatives? I am interested, in mobile devices,Chromium-based browsers. Edited December 6, 2024 by Sampei.Nihira
vinifera Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 via seemed good (light) but i'd rather use ice raven (ff based)
UCyborg Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Some mobile apps have gotten considerably heavier with years. Still insisting with a 10 years old low-end smartphone here. From past experience, regular web browsers tend to make the OS terminate the home app with just a single tab open. Via is one of the browsers that uses WebView component.
Guest Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 (edited) I have tried Via browser. Although it is an interesting browser ,it is not suitable for my personal needs. WebRTC block doesn't work. The search in “Filterlists” has a lag in writing. Secure DNS cannot be entered. ECH is disabled, probably the d3ward test is incompatible,Ping Spotter test is a disaster,URL parameter blocking does not work as in many other browsers (example Vivaldi),CoverYouTrack test is great (but I get the same with Opera),it does not use a Post-Quantum-Key (in Vivaldi you can enable it). I don't think,I haven't tested that it is possible to enable “Bind cookies to their setting origin's port” +“ Bind cookies to their setting origin's scheme”. The inclusion of custom filter lists is interesting. Probably the speed of viewing Web sites is slightly less than Opera, but better than Vivaldi. So I finished my tests. j7n Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I got a Core 2 Duo from them and some DDR2 RAM. The prices for higher processors have since come down. I think they must have "recycled" old professionally used computers. Xeon processors are common. There were false listings of Pentium 4s, but they were obvious by the etchings. They can't do anything to fake the CPU like flash a "BIOS," and they are really not worth more than that.
