@Bersaglio,

I did get your link in the pm. Thank you. This will help until the next time MS plays a new trick with MSE.

Mo

Did you try the links I posted? I confirmed that they work.

Please substitute for the following links, click on any snapshot and the file will be served immediately. There are limited dates available!

Yes, I did try the top one. Thank you for all your help and advice.

What I found is that at least for me, the top link does download a file called mpam-fe.exe. However, it is only about 2mb in size. I don't know if I again did something wrong, but this appears to be not the same file I was expecting.

Also, given the link from Bersaglio, I think I have what I need to recover the old mpsigstub.

I am interested in your further comments regarding the wayback machine method.

It depends on the date that you choose. Naturally these files grow over time as the threats increase in number and complexity.

I downloaded a definitions file from Christmas 2010 and it was 58.7MB: https://web-beta.archive.org/web/20101224185315/http://download.microsoft.com/download/DefinitionUpdates/mpam-fe.exe

I Did try this again

1. Unpack mpam-fe.exe package to some folder (using WinRAR or something).

2. Remove MPSigStub.exe from this folder.

3. Unpack mpam-fe.exe revision 1.239.450.0 (or earlier package) to a different folder. Then copy MPSigStub.exe to the first folder with newer definitions.

4. Run MPSigStub.exe (in the first folder, of course)

-----------------------------------------

using my MPSigStub then repacking it didn't seem to work this time

It did it ok on 2 PC's

is there any new defs updates from 30th 1st 2nd

I also have an installer (Works only if the POSReady key is present in the registry!) for a small updater attached to the MSE Definition Updater 1.5 package where the WU/MU routine is used by MSE and is run via the Task Manager every 60 minutes.

Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Updater package

@dencorso

By the way, I have pointed out yet another possibility how MSE gets the definition installed.

Apparently gone under.

:)

When you say "apparently gone under", do you mean it still works, or it stopped working?

I have just downloaded the new mpam-fe.exe, unpacked it, and ran the "old" version of mpsigstub that I was sent to me. This time the mpsigstub started to run, and then finished after only about 30-45 seconds (it usually takes about 2 minutes). It did NOT update my defs files. I still have 1.239.603.0 . What is the problem now??

@mo832

Try the method where all files with the ending vdm and dll, from the unpacked mpam-fe.exe, into the folder
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\Definition Updates\Updates"
copy. Do not run MpSigStub.exe, in 1-2 minutes then start the update process from MSE. When the process is complete, the previously copied vdm and dll files that are needed are no longer present in the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\Definition Updates\Updates", in which case the remaining files can be deleted.

I had this problem on one system (with errors in system log). In my case the problem was solved by a simple reboot of this system.:yes:

I tried this method next. It did remove 1 or 2 files from the folder and left 3 files there. After about 15 mins, the files were still there and the MSE was not updated ("created 2 days ago").

Then I ran mse_updater 1.5, it ran and finished with the message "there is no update available".

Still my mse shows 1.239.603.0
