XP x64 doesn't support hibernation if you have 4 GB RAM or more. Vista does. Windows 7 and 8 can even compress the hibernation file.

Who need that crapy hibernation? It lead pc to death.

Dibya I was more referring to untouched, not backbone editing
s*** if you wan't NT 6 stripped down to bone yet to work normally it would probably go up to 500 MB
but thats not the point, point was how WIM is easier to edit than i386 setup, moreso for newbies
while youre downloading other peoples scripts and configurations, newbie can do simmiliar by his own

but as always you can't compare the 2 as they are totally different...

i am still now happy with xp and never have any interest on nt6.x

Only once i made my 7 ntlited iso which is as small as 900mb still it canot get the performance of xp nlited to 240 (app driver and everything)

500mb barebone will make hell incompatible.

Believe it n6.x is pure junk and it increased day by day

I'm curious as to the reason for disabling the Windows Update service and,on top of that, blocking the servers in the firewall. Should we distrust Microsoft to honor the UI setting to "never check for updates"?

I started mistrusting Microsoft's settings when I read about the secret forced updates in the past.  Now with their GWX push, and so many updates that are under documented, doubly so.

Regarding the implied question, "how much is too much prevention?", consider things like this:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/06/01/windows_10_nagware_no_way_out/

I have observed that there are a lot of jobs normally sprinkled throughout the Task Scheduler that if allowed to run cause attempted communications.  And there are jobs that enable other jobs.  For example, no one really knows what the Microsoft\Windows\TaskScheduler\Regular Maintenance job is capable of, but it does enough good things that you don't really want to disable it.

And of course the details in all this differ somewhat between Windows versions.

For what it's worth, these are lists of the scheduled jobs I have (and showing those I have disabled).  I log this information, amongst a bunch of other data, every night so I can do comparisons and see if/when things are changed.

Once busy season at work it over and we are past Microsoft's end date for the free downgrade to Windows 10 I want to start getting updates again (I have had no issues since disabling them). Obviously they will still need vetted and any known updates that have any connection to the Windows 10 upgrade will be avoided. We will see what happens though they could end up extending the date for the free upgrade just to get a few more unsuspecting victims.

Wow, you really have done your homework. I wouldn't know what to do about half (at least) of the jobs listed there. My hat's off to you.

Two things I noticed are that your 8.1 list is about twice as long as the one for 7, and that the ratio of disabled tasks to ready or running tasks is much closer to 1 for Win8.1 than for Win7.

This merits a comment of its own. So the company, after getting raked through the coals for offering the public the misleading choice of that red X to cancel the downgrade process that actually meant you were approving said process, has responded by... removing choice altogether.

Unf%^&ingbelievable. They're like the Terminator, singlemindedly pursuing their programmed objective without regard or consideration for the havoc they're wreaking on others.

All MSFT top executives and middle managers should be taken to live in North Korea for a year or two, so that they might regain an appreciation for the value of respecting the choices of other people.

There are more scheduled jobs in Win 8.1 than 7.  That's just Microsoft hanging all kinds of garbage on what's otherwise a nice kernel.

Regarding why there's more in the list (and more disabled) in 8.1...

  • Microsoft has been hanging more "features" (e.g., cloud integration) in its newer systems.  In other words, they're not changing the OS kernel so much as tacking on higher level jobs to do things like "sync settings", etc.
  • More of the new "features" (e.g., cloud integration) are things I want to disable.
  • I use Win 8.1 interactively more as it's on my main workstation and it's a more complex system.  I have probably triggered more things to run on it.  My Win 7 system functions primarily as a small business server, though I use it for testing sometimes.

Your comment got me to wondering how Win 10 stacks up...  I just looked at my Win 10 test system, which I have configured to be a full development system but which has gotten far less use than my actual Win 8.1 workstation.

My scheduled task counts:

  • Win 7 scheduled tasks:     101 tasks (32 disabled)
  • Win 8.1 scheduled tasks:  185 tasks (89 disabled)
  • Win 10 scheduled tasks:   199 tasks (121 disabled)

Interesting trend, eh?  It's a way I hadn't thought of before to quantify how much Microsoft's new work is drifting from what I need in an OS.

If it's interesting, here's my list of Win 10 tasks:

Dibya you're too harsh :)
but as time goes by you will have to switch at some point

if you have any machine bought in 2007 it will run NT 6 just fine
comparing to todays PC's mine is junk, but I'm switching to x64 win7 soon, coz of RAM, as stupid browsers need RAAAAAAM :P

XP speed vs 7 ?, maybe 1 second :P
in some cases - this goes on productivity more, w7 is faster as you can switch via favorites directly to given folders
xp, you'd have to stiff shortcuts to quick launch toolbar or some other crappy place for that...
not to mention taskbar being plagued by buttons too easily

3 GB OS is not that big now... s*** even hard disks from 2000 were 50 GB, now you can get cheap 500 GB
so space isn't issue, speed... just freaking defrag your disk :D
-

and sorry to others for going off topic :P

The shop at which I do computer support activities has just changed their update directives.  The most outstanding directive is no more updates to Windows 10.  Another melted MS ice cube in the great computer ocean.  It was a good day at the shop today.

until i have knowledge i will never go from xp.

XP is not faster for 1 second but much more than that.

In my laptop(Compaq620) XP boots  up in 16 Seconds and whrere Windows 7 takes 1min 67Sec although more softwares are installed in XP partition (Donot belive me I can show you)

In real life if you compared Rendering Softs, 3dMAX,MAYA Runs far more faster on XP .

I am already there is a patch for XP namely fix128 which can make 32bit XP Recognize and use 128GB RAM with PAE no problem founds till now those are found with old 64G Patches.

Now come to productivity everyone knows XP is userfriendly and much more productive OS . If you ever used corporate networks, You can found XP printing , coping , using every thing instantly where 7 takes much times.

Terminal Server of XP is far better than windows 7 , it run very smooth if 10 RDC machines are connected even with a old p4 pc sameway Win7 RDC performances lags behinds even if you use i5 pc as your server.

Now come to secuirity ,  win7 and higher contain NSA Backdoors .

If recently a goverment office near my house got infected with CRyptologers where 7 / 8 computers got infected but nothing happened with XP ones.

I have talked many secuirity exsperts from well known institution and even some black hats who currently works in a company .They told you are much safer using 2k\XP\2k3 rather using vista\7\8.1\10.

Even Vista Sp2 performs better than your windows 7 sp1 , donot belive me run yourself pasmark.

Being uptodate with technology is good but Remember old is always Gold.

Even if i accept anything as my second most favoured os after XP that will be 8.1 or Ubuntu.

In 2019 , XP will be Bug free OS in the world due to about 20yrs of Patches and 99.99% of ExploitKits will not do anthing.

I am using XP with out Any AV for one year still i not got any virus.

I donot why? you guys are telling XP bad.
you are concerned about secuirity , then MS is putting some nice spyware in your 7/8.1 pc through updates and windows 10 comes inbuilt . If you are talking about memory manager Xp uses a server standard memory manager and xp even being a 32bit os can adress 128Gb ram in PAE(If you are using Sp2/sp3 , you need a patch namely fix128). XP is lighweight and doesnot have crap like mordern windows . MS is making there every version based on Vista after xp , every one know how? miserable is vista . Corporate networking, SQL performance of xp is far higher than mordern os , donot believe me do some bench mark or see here :: http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10539
Now came to ram, XP use less than half of resoarce what your windows 7/8.1/10 uses so wasting your ram and cpu is good , you can have that for games
Telling Newer os is safer read the following
https://tech.slashdot.org/story/15/09/01/1951235/microsofts-telemetry-additions-to-windows-7-and-8-raise-privacy-concerns
http://www.techtimes.com/articles/6906/20140513/microsoft-bats-for-windows-xp-says-windows-7-and-vista-more-vulnerable-to-viruses.htm
I belive windows 8 wined there due to latest defender same way we can have a good  much better AV software

If you guys like bloatwares then keep it

And with wrong theories :w00t: , XP is ALREADY bloated, 2K is the "real thing" ;) , and yes, I still run a couple NT 4.0 machines.

2k cannot handle many mordern even with kernelEx. I have still nt 4 in my grannies laptop.

HE is telling Win7 is Less bloated than XP , which cannot be believed.

if 2k is so good then why? it died almost 3years before its eol.

XP is faster than 2k as per passmark .

Windows 7 is 80 times more bloated than XP.

I use a nlited OS !! Crap Free  XP

@vinifera

I personally not a cristian but i am a hindu.

I personally never believe god .

Still VIn you have no power to say such thing about lord jesus.

If you can prove it that XP is Slower than your windows 7 .

.

It didn't, but it was an OS for Professional use, not (also) for the entertainment, the numbers were small because very few people actually needed (or used) a PC at work, the numbers came with XP (that was released only one year later), a typical office in those years ran several copies of Windows 95/98 (everyone but the following), very few NT 4.00 (Servers) and some more NT 4.00 (Engineers workstations and similar), when Windows 2000 came out, the Windows 95/98's were not upgraded, only the Servers and Engineer workstations.

Until Server 2003 (actually Server 2003 SP1) came out all servers would be still running NT 4.00 and 2000 server, and as well all workstations continued using 2K, the much bigger impact of XP was because it replaced all the win 9x'x (and a very small number of Me's) machines, and of course a couple years had passed and *everyone* would have a PC.

Once upon a time (JFYI) computers were made to work (as opposed to watch videos on youtube, twit and chat ;)) at the time Internet access was *luxury*, not something *standard* on every device.

The accuracy of this report has come into question:

PCWorld was unable to reproduce its results with an up-to-date Windows 8.1 machine on Thursday. (The Register took its screenshot from a Windows 7 machine.)  Microsoft, for its part, denied the story was true.

Time will tell.
