Which Component Version comes with XP SP3?

Hello dear friends!

I'm making my patched XP installation disk these days (coming from W2k) and would like to know what version(s) of components ship with XP SP3:

(a) Windows Media Player (I see 6.4 and 9.0 on my installation, as is now)

( b ) Internet Explorer (I don't remember if I upgraded)

( c ) XML

(d) VML

(e) VBS and JS (do they make WSH together?)

(f) DotNet

(g) Visual Basic Runtime

(h) Visual C and C++ Runtime

(i) Remote Destktop Connection Client

(j) MDAC

(klmnopqrstuvwxyz) I've forgotten some...

Also, is the LBA48 enabled by default on XPSP3?

And the killer question: is there a single GDI and GDI+ on XPSP3, so that patching Windows (MS13-089 and MS13-054) suffices? Or has each application its own copy, and each editor should have distributed a patch, as they should have done for W2k?

Thank you!

I will -attempt- to address you "list" as accurately as possible.

a - MP9
b - XP's IE6SP1
c - Search for "MSXML*.*" on HDD (varies v6.c/8.x) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269238
d - IE-related
e - See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Script_Host (and links inside)
f - dotNET1 SP1 (DOTNETFX+NDPSP) within DOTNET folder
g - VB5+VB6
h - AFAIK, none
i - RDC 5.1.2600.2180 (MSRDPCLI in the SUPPORT\TOOLS folder)
j - Open MDAC.INF inside the "WINDOWS\INF" folder. (more than MDAC http://support.microsoft.com/kb/231943)
* - (whatever...)
- LBA48 - Yes
- See this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_Device_Interface (WHAT "application" are you referring to?)

Guess I should ask - what is your concerns? (Really wierd question, IMHO)

You realize that many items you speak of (e.g.) dotNet don't just "get installed"? After all, they weren't in Win2K either, right? You had to Install "after the fact". ;) Try going to WindowsUpdate and reviewing "Optional Components" to get the drift. :yes:

edit - best to just Integrate ALL post-SP3 (http://xdot.tk), install, then go to WU to "check" what's left.

...and FYI, here is the COMPLETE SP3

(has SP3 EXE and new/replaced "other" folders - DOTNETFX/SUPPORT/VALUEADD)

I agree. Do you really want what was originally shipped with XP, or do you want the latest version of the features you are asking about that will install and function correctly on XP? ie, on your latest installed Win2K system have you been using what was originally shipped with Win2K?

Cheers and Regards

I really don't understand.

Set up a VM (*any* will do).

Get a XP "Gold" (SP0) or SP1a or SP2 source or SP3 source.

Slipstream to it SP3 (if not already at SP3).

Install it to the VM.

Check the version of anything.

I mean, besides whether the replies that you will get may or may not be accurate, what if you forget one app (or you cannot get a reply for it)?

Having such a described VM install handy will allow you to quickly boot it up and check whenever you have a doubt.

Of course he could find it out by himself, but that IMHO doesn't make it a weird question that one can't possibly understand why on earth it's asked. The forum is slow enough to not put everybody off.

I was not trying to put anyone off :no:, simply pointing out how I would approach the same problem.

There is a degree of uncertainty in:

and in the replies that may be provided by helping members :), such as:

* - (whatever...)

I believe that if someone is going to put together a customized XP installation disk, he/she would also need to test it (several times) in a VM, so that making before an additional VM with the "unmodified" installation to have a quick and accurate comparison is a simple way, besides answering those questions, to troubleshoot issues (if any) with the modded installation by comparing it with the non-modded one.

I reserve the right to fail to understand something and saying it, however.

Thank you friends!

I'm just trying to add the proper patches after Sp3 to an Xp installation Cd, and if I tried for instance to patch XML8 while only XML6 is present, I'd get an obscure message needing long to interpret (no XML? Not 8? Needs an other patch before? Wrong language? Taken the Vista patch? Worse?).

And if I don't slipstream newer versions of the components (ie8...) in the installation disk, it's useful to know that some patches are still needed in case I upgrade after the installation.

I did a detailed analysis for W2k, which I knew well for years, and it took me long. Same for W95b. On Xp I'm less easy and would make mistakes. Just to determine a VML version for instance, there must be no help > About menu, and a version number like 5.1.2600 would not tell me more.

Hence your help is useful.

Cheers!

VML = VGX.DLL (right-click on that...)

Did you go to the -X- website I gave and have a look? Please revisit my original post. Also, revisit jaclaz' sugestion of VM to test. In addition (FYI) without the -latest- Windows Update Agent you'll not reach the Windows Update Website without (potentially) crashing -and- it -may- REQUIRE IE8 installation (which is listed as a CRITICAL Security Update).

Basically, do NOT willy-nilly apply patches that you "find" on MS Downloads. The -X- website has the latest listed. Slip them in, test in a VM, and get any OPTIONALS manually as you wish and install in the VM, then go BACK to MS Update to find THOSE patches, rinse and repeat. DRIVERS may appear in "Hardware" on a REAL RUNNING PC (not a VM) so test the FINAL one (on the Real Machine) to get those and slip them in as well for the GIVEN Machine. I guess if you REALLY wanted to get crazy, you could go get the WHOLE DRIVERPACKS set but... why?

edit - and -IF- you use HFSLIP, I will -assume- that it deals with MediaPlayer9 Updates correctly (the Updates are multi-MediaPlayer-Version files).
