vinifera Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) I have an USB 2.0 stick (unknown brand), 8 GB capacityformated to NTFSit works fine, until it tries to copy last few bytes of any filelike so:at this point when it comes to 5 or 1 second to completeit waits 30 seconds, sometime up to 1 minute and does nothing, just waiting and waitingthen completes the copy/moveI scanned it with windows check disk and nothing bad was showndriver is generic by winOS (7)what could be the problem ? submix8c Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Two things to note:- A Copy/Move operation isn't done directly to the target - your TEMP folder is used for intermediate transfer- Caching -may- have something to do with it - see following two linkshttp://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10392-write-caching-enable-disable.htmlhttp://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/04/write-caching-for-usb-devices-in-windows-just-dont-bother/
vinifera Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) submix8cthing is that only that USB stick has issues with this the others (I have 4 total) I have do notNot sure if serious...why not ? Edited March 4, 2014 by vinifera

vinifera Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) what ? "butt plug" ?I call all my usb-sticks funny names Edited March 4, 2014 by vinifera
jaclaz Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Maybe it needs to be carefully cleaned after a too literal use of the device. Seriously now, it sounds like a controller issue of some kind.I personally would try to "zap" the thingy (let's call it "low level formatting") with it's manufacturer tool (where available).Normally these softwares do have also a "testing" provision (it is well possible that the issue is within the actual memory chips and not in the controller/settings).Start by identifying the actual device and the controller in it:http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=it&ie=UTF8&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http://www.usbdev.ru/files/&usg=ALkJrhh0pb9R-yf6Uk2SVs1qrHLBHeb4YAIt is possible that one or the other of the three "main" tools (CheckUDisk, ChipEasy, ChipGenius) will provide different/wrong information, so I recommend to run all three of them and compare results.jaclaz
tain Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 what ? "butt plug" ?I call all my usb-sticks funny names I'd be interested to hear more of them, if they are suitable for MSFN.
vinifera Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 I personally would try to "zap" the thingy (let's call it "low level formatting") with it's manufacturer tool (where available).yeh it identified itself as Toshiba something, but their web is in some freakish chinese could it be because it is in NTFS and not usualy FAT32 ?what ? "butt plug" ?I call all my usb-sticks funny names I'd be interested to hear more of them, if they are suitable for MSFN.you decide lol ...so this one is "Butt Plug", another is "Orgasmatron", another is "Stix", last one is "Stick it"
jaclaz Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 yeh it identified itself as Toshiba something, but their web is in some freakish chinese could it be because it is in NTFS and not usualy FAT32 ?No and no (and no ).Meaning that there exist NOT AFAIK any Toshiba USB stick controller (but Toshiba memory chips are often used) and that the idea was that you ran th etools and posted their output (so that I can help you find the right production tool on some "terrifying" Russian , not "freakish" Chinese pages ) and no, the NTFS is not an issue in itself, though depending on a few settings in the actual OS the filesystem journaling features may accelerate flash wear.jaclaz

dencorso Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 So the controller is a Phison and the pendrive is a common garden-variety Kingston. This may or may not have anything to do with the issue you reported but, whatever file system you use, you should abstain from using names containing spaces, like "Stick it"... you never know when some part of the OS will balk just because of that.
jaclaz Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Good and here is the Russian related page :http://www.usbdev.ru/files/phison/http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=it&ie=UTF8&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http://www.usbdev.ru/files/phison/&usg=ALkJrhhoPhdxWKyyiIz1bCLF1mWu1K82tAWhat you want to try is the "Phison UPTool" and/or the "Phison MPALL", but first you should try with the "Phison Low Level Format Utility (Preformat)".Your stick seems like using a controller:UP20 = PS2260 = PS2251-60jaclaz
vinifera Posted March 6, 2014 Author Posted March 6, 2014 (edited) with Phison Low Level Format Utility, I get error "Low level format Failed"with UPTool, I get error "not support IC or Flash" Edited March 6, 2014 by vinifera
jaclaz Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 (edited) There are several versions of such tools on the given page, you may want to try with another one, but these are undocumented, complex and potentially "dangerous" tools, a report like:with UPTool, I get error "not support IC or Flash"makes very little sense.Which EXACT file did you try?HOW EXACTLY did you run it (which EXACT settings)? What about the "MPALL"?In any case get the "Getinfo" program GetInfo v3.8.8.2:http://www.usbdev.ru/?wpfb_dl=119and run it, it is a Phison specific "information gatherer" that will provide additional info. Also read (through google translate) the actual "main page", there are a number of "suggestions", "tricks" and "what not's" that may apply to your case. Finally, cannot say speciifically, but these utilities usually tend to work fine on XP and to have issues on Windows Vista or 7.jaclaz Edited March 6, 2014 by jaclaz
