Guest wsxedcrfv
There seems to have been a kb article regarding esdi_506.pdr that Microsoft removed at some point possibly during 2007 or 2008:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/252187/The following is from a German -> English translation of that kb:The following is the actual English text of Q252187, as retrived today from the Wayback Machine:-------------------Your Computer May Hang While Resuming From Standby Mode with a Removable Device in the Docking Station --------------------------------------------------------------------------------The information in this article applies to:Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition--------------------------------------------------------------------------------SYMPTOMSWhile your computer resumes from Standby mode, your computer may stop responding (hang) if a removable device is installed, such as an LS-120 floppy disk drive used with an IBM docking station. CAUSEThis problem can occur when the controller for the removable device does not complete the last request before your computer enters Standby mode, and access to the controller is not in the correct state when your computer returns from Standby mode. RESOLUTIONA supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information on support costs, please go to the following address on the World Wide Web:http://support.microsoft.com/directory/overview.aspNOTE: In special cases, charges that are normally incurred for support calls may be canceled, if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. Normal support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question. The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later: Date Time Version Size File name Operating system---------------------------------------------------------------------11/09/00 10:53p 4.10.2226 28,526 Esdi_506.pdr Windows 98 Second Edition STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.MORE INFORMATIONThis problem has been seen on the IBM ThinkPad 600x with an LS-120 floppy disk drive in the docking station. The third-party products discussed in this article are manufactured by vendors independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability.---------------------If this has already been answered or addressed, please excuse my ignorance - but what is known about that version of esdi_506.pdr, and why did Microsoft pull that KB off the web? Edited January 19, 2010 by dencorso Replaced the retranslation from the German by the actual original English text.
rloew
There seems to have been a kb article regarding esdi_506.pdr that Microsoft removed at some point possibly during 2007 or 2008:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/252187/The following is from a German -> English translation of that kb:<snip>---------------------If this has already been answered or addressed, please excuse my ignorance - but what is known about that version of esdi_506.pdr, and why did Microsoft pull that KB off the web?Version 4.10.2226 of ESDI_506.PDR is identical to Version 4.10.2225 with the addition of some Power Management commands.I have isolated the Code changes. It has been discussed on this forum years ago. No one recommended it unless they had the specific problem it was designed to fix.Otherwise it appears to work the same as the previous version.I do not know why Microsoft removed it. dencorso
Please do forgive me friends for having edited your posts, but I do think two instances of a longish German-machine-translated English text are two much, especially when we do have access to the original English text (and even so, a single copy of it should suffice). That said, Rloew is right, as usual, wsxedcrfv. That's one update that is considered by many, myself included, only useful for the issue it's intended to, and otherwise not recommendable. If you want to know all about it, delve head-first into my > 137 Gb thread, which is linked to the right part of my signature, below, and you'll find all the old relevant threads RLoew just mentioned. Good reading!
Guest wsxedcrfv
What was the URL you looked up on the wayback machine? That was the first place I looked for an archived version. But when I tried this: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://suppor....com/kb/252187/ it comes back with no matches.
dencorso
Refresh you browser more often or wait for me to finish... If you just click or hover your mouse over the underlined Wayback Machine in your own post, you'll see it.It's quite useful to know all the variations MS used for their URLs from way back when to find those pearls, but this particular form uses to work most of the time, unless the KB in question is too new. And, BTW, be warned that the Wayback Machine is slower than a stoned turtle today.
cluberti
The last I saw it was back in 2007, and unless you're running a laptop that needs it (and I don't really think most laptops other than Thinkpads do) it's not worth having, honestly. erpdude8
it would have been nice if you guys looked at MDGx's Software essentials page on the esdi_506.pdr patches for Win98se:Microsoft Windows 98 SE Computer Hangs with Removable Device in Docking Station ESDI_506.PDR 4.10.2226 Fix:Direct download [154 KB, English].Install ESDI_506.PDR 4.10.2226 Fix ONLY on IBM portables with removable disks!Microsoft Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE ScanDisk Errors With (E)IDE Hard Disks > 32 GB ESDI_506.PDR (4.10.2186 for Win98/98 SP1 + 4.10.2225 for Win98 SE) Fix:Direct download [158 KB, English].Install ESDI_506.PDR 4.10.2225 Fix on ALL PCs/portables EXCEPT IBM portables with removable disks! If this has already been answered or addressed, please excuse my ignorance - but what is known about that version of esdi_506.pdr, and why did Microsoft pull that KB off the web?MS deliberately removed MS KB article 252187 off their support site to make room for new KB articles for new products. kinda sucks doesn't it, wsxedcrfv. However the actual KB252187 hotfix is still available if you use this link to request it from MS (you may have to click on "I Accept" button before proceeding). cluberti
The point was the fix was for specific hardware (mostly older Thinkpads), so unless you needed this one, it didn't make sense to actually install it. It gives you nothing.
MDGx
Caution [like it says at my site where 1 can d/l those patches (thanks erpdude8)]... the newer ESDI_506.PDR 4.10.2226 can lock up computers other than IBM Thinkpads. Fortunately older ESDI_506.PDR build 4.10.2225 works ok on all computers.HTH
Fredledingue
Not sure, MDGx. Last time I checked only 4.10.2222 worked on my computer.
cluberti
Exactly my point - this is not one of those hotfixes you want to install unless you absolutely are having the issue the fix is meant to address.
dave237
well guys, why are you talking about versions 4.10.2225-6 while there is version 4.10.2230 and it works fine for me (win 98 SE) for at least 4 years?
MDGx
well guys, why are you talking about versions 4.10.2225-6 while there is version 4.10.2230 and it works fine for me (win 98 SE) for at least 4 years? You're right, I completely forgot about the newer "unofficial" build ESDI_506.PDR 4.10.2230, which is actually 4.10.2225 "fixed" to make it work with all types of PC hardware. Can be installed manually [unzip and run _install.bat] from here [486 KB]:http://www.mdgx.com/files/BHDD31.ZIPLinked from here:http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#TLSThis build [newest available] is the "universal" one with all the bells, whistles + fixes, and should run ok on all types of hardware.I may even create an Iexpress/INF/SED installer for it in the near future, so one doesn't have to run intall.bat manually, and then reboot.
