The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs

Recommended Posts

Now that I've fixed my drive, I'm looking for the firmware update. The drive came out of a Lacie, so Seagate says they won't help me (ridiculous). Lacie hasn't responded yet.

Does anyone have the firmware update for my drive? Its information: ST3500620AS, firmware LC11.

I would greatly appreciate getting a copy of this so I don't have to deal with either company's customer service.

According to Seagate's website, the latest firmware for an ST3500620AS is also version SD1A,

so I guess you can safely flash it with that version, but don't blame me when things go wrong

if you do decide to try it before getting feedback from LaCie... :angel

That's great to hear, pennox! :thumbup

Did you have to perform specific actions to get this cable to work?

Maybe you can sum up a little list of things to do, in case other people also want to use this

type of cable.

OK' I'll show to others,how it's work.!

for the first u just need serial cable sie c55/m55 this already to use,no modification require or no power 3.3v,2.7v,5v because it's built in power from rs232 chip on this serial cable.

This serial have 3 line colors :

WHITE=TX

BLUE=RX

BLACK=GROUND

I don't know this standart color or no.!( maybe diferrent with other product,but same type for c55/m55)

How connect to hdd?

White(TX)----->RXHDD

Blue (RX)----->TXHDD

Black ------>Pin Ground HDD

I use serial com port 1 to connect to HyperTerminal , plug in the power hdd ,sata not connected..!

Do command like on the tutorial page..!!

AND DONE.!

Just for the record. :)

An original siemens cable for models C55 or M55 should look like this:

http://mobilesupportservices.co.uk/shop/catalog1/product_info.php/products_id/8523/language/pr

The "official" name is DCA-512 (USB version)

The connector on the phone side:

http://www.gsm-support.net/en/connector-for-siemens-c55-12-pin-p1127

connector-c55_big.jpg

Is rather "open" and the pinout is known:

http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-P-W/siemens_c55_pinout.shtml

(find in the above a list of models that use the same connector and hopefully which data cable is compatible)

Just like it happens with Nokia cables there are a myriad of cables types/brands, examples:

http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/datacables/siemens.htm#data

of which a few need an external battery.

So actual mileage may vary.

i'm trying to connect with hyperterminal and im getting the error "Unable to open Com3. Please check your port settings"

any reason why im getting this? and the fix??

This can mean a couple of things:

  • The COM-port you're trying to use isn't a real (virtual) COM-port
  • You're trying to open the COM-port with unsupported settings
    (like for instance 230400 baud)
  • The COM-port has already been opened by another application
  • The COM-port has not been closed properly after it has been used
    in an earlier (HyperTerminal?) session.

Make sure the COM-port drivers are installed correctly.

Check in your system's device manager whether it's really there and that

there's no exclamation point next to it.

What type of COM-port are you using?

An external USB one? An on-board COM-port?

A little more details *could* help... :whistle:

If you're using a (phone) USB-cable like the CA-42, make sure the software

that came with it isn't running (or installed); these services will keep

the COM-port open, even when not in use.

You only need to have the drivers installed (and it should show up in device

manager as a "Virtual COM-port").

You might have to reboot your computer (sometimes even a full power down) to

reset a COM-port.

Blue (RX)----->TXHDD

Black ------>Pin Ground HDD

I use serial com port 1 to connect to HyperTerminal , plug in the power hdd ,sata not connected..!

Thanks for the update, I'm sure it can be of use to others :hello:

Hello everyone.

I managed to unbrick my ES.2 drive with BSY problem using "USB to TTL" (CP2102-chip based). Thank you for the fix!!! Now HDD works fine.

However this drive was part of windows dynamic volume of 5 drives (Spanned), I know it's not the best storage solution, but it was like temporary.

After applying the fix, I can't access the spanned volume anymore, probably because windows does not recognize it as a part of that volume, so I suspect that "Partition regeneration" command "F3 T>m0,2,2,,,,,22 (enter)" messed up HDD partition table. I spent two days looking for a solution, but found nothing.

So when you guys say that the fix doesn't change data on the HDD, are you really sure about that? I need to know what "T>m0,2,2,,,,,22" did exactly to HDD, and maybe I can revert that change. I found that someone already asked this question here, about RAID 5 array, but no one replied :-( Wondering if someone can help me with this... Sorry for my bad english.

ST31000333AS

Firmware: SD35

No spin. Beeping Sound.

I can terminal to the drive but fail to make any headway beyond spin down with the board physically separated from the drive.

Plz help :)

Update:

ASCII Diag mode

F3 T>/2

F3 2>Z

Spin Down Complete

Elapsed Time 0.106 msecs

F3 2>U

And the beeping returns :( It's been over 3 minutes and nothing new has popped up in my terminal session. Thoughts?

Update 2:

Finally something popped up and the drive stopped beeping:

DiagError 00006008

Spin Error

Elapsed Time 6 mins 58 secs

R/W Status 2 R/W Error 84150180

Update 3:

My drive NOW appears on Seagate's list of needing a firmware update (It wasn't on the list when I checked the other week).

I downloaded the exe which caused XP to restart. The install failed because it couldn't detect my drive which had resumed beeping as soon as the computer started powering up.

The only good thing to come out of the attempt was that with a SATA data cable connected at the time, the computer now showed the brick under Device Manager. It showed up as a 0mb drive which I believe is the other plague affecting these hard drives. Regardless, I tried to input the m0.2,2,0,0,0,0,22 command as show and was greeted with LED:blah blah blah error we all know and love. :(

I removed the power from the brick to make it stop beeping so I could reestablish telenet communication but that only caused the drive to drop out of Device Manager.

I'd welcome a prescribed course of action as I'm afraid my attempts could really kill this drive or hurt my pc. Thanks :)

No spin. Beeping Sound.

Please read, slowly, point #1 here:

Pseudo-code:

IF NOT LBA0 THEN IF NOT BSY THEN GOTO :Start_New_thread

Your drive has probably the motor or motor controller stuck, nothing connected with the problems this fix can solve.

@Phenom9

No, we cannot be 100% sure of anything, this is somehow a "hack", it is very possible that a little something has changed, but same applies to you, start a new thread if you need help in recovering those spanned volumes.

@jaclaz:

Thank you for the link. It doesn't tell me anything I didn't already read over the last 4 weeks of trying to solve this issue.

Not being of a highly technical profession (IT, Programming, etc.) I came here looking for someone to clarify MY specific set of variables and advise me if they had anything to do with the two known issues. Lack of spin and beeping have been mentioned on various other sites as "possibly" being related symptoms. I registered here to list my progress (and failure) for advice as the members of this forum appeared more mature than most others.

Please take a moment to look over http://www.overclock.net/hard-drives-storage/457286-seagate-bricked-firmware-drive-fix-pics-5.html starting with post #48. jroymd's situation sounds the same as mine.

Thoughts?

Thanks MSFN for the opportunity to seek aid. You have a nice community here :)

F3 2>U

And the beeping returns :( It's been over 3 minutes and nothing new has popped up in my terminal session. Thoughts?

I had kind of this problem (Error messages/clicking sounds/nothing) after the "U" command.

My fault was not fixing the Controller with ALL 6 screws back in place.

Reading again and again over the first Post in this Topic helped me a lot.

Best wishes for your HD recovery...

.....

Thoughts?

Yes :), as said, if your drive motor does not spin up when it is connected to power (even with NO data cable connected) and beeps, it is ANOTHER problem from that discussed on this thread, so please start ANOTHER new thread, where maybe it will be possible to help you without further cloggering this thread.

In a nutshell, when a drive of this kind is powered it should:

  1. start spinning
  2. try to read calibration data
  3. NOT beep

even if it's "bricked" with BSY and LBA0 problems...

This is not the behaviour you described, hence this is not the right place to talk about this problem.

Read here:

http://forums.seagate.com/t5/ATA-and-Serial-ATA-drives/Seagate-7200-11-Drive-Beeping/m-p/39439

then start a new thread about your issue.

If this started happening since when you have removed the PCB ONLY, (and it didn't beep and it did spinup before) it means that somehow contacts are not as they should be.

In other words, carefully and thoroughfully clean contacts, completely re-assemble the drive an PCB, and make sure that the drive operates "normally" (meaning NOT beeping AND spinning up) then check if it has a BSY or LBA0 problem.

Until you are in such a condition, this is simply not the appropriate thread to try and help you.
