HOWTO create a fully up to date XP x64 DVD (EoL Feb 2016)

To my knowledge there are 2 installers; one for IE (_ax) and one "non IE" (Firefox, Chrome, etc...). Each is for both x86 and x64.

If there is any reason they went from 2MB to 20MB in a few years, this might be one (not that Adobe needs any ).

Ah, this "sort of" explains why when I go to update the Flash for Firefox (from the Extensions page) it goes and downloads the Flash for IE instead. Now to figure out why that happens...

EDIT: I see 64 and 32 bit DLLs in the System32 and sysWOW64 folders, respectively.  Waterfox browser (x64) points to System32 and Firefox (x86) points to sysWOW64.

Johnhc, Ponch is correct in that Adobe eventually got around to supporting x64 browsers and have now been doing so for a year or more.

I found out that the links are dead on Wednesday afternoon (patch Tuesday is patch early Wednesday morning in my time zone) when I tried to grab the latest versions then I found the same page you did as my 2nd or 3rd search result.

I just use Seamonkey's (firefox) dictionaries to check my spelling, although on the topic posts with all the bb code there are red squiggles everywhere.

EMET 5.1 fundamentally broken on XP x64 and hence presumably on Server 2003 x64

Launching any EMET protected application on XP x64 will result in the following error message:

The procedure entry point fopen_s could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll.

However the application will still open and appears to work.

Disabling all mitigations has no effect, only removing the application from the protected list stops the error from occurring but of course that defeats the whole purpose.

As XP x64 is built on the codebase of Server 2003 x64 it is reasonable to assume that the same errors will occur there.

Of the 20 protected applications I tested only Foxit Reader didn't throw an error but it turns out that's because the wrong application name is coded into EMET, it is listed as "Foxit Reader.exe" when it should be "FoxitReader.exe", no space.

As EMET 5.0 seems to have disappeared (EMET 5.1 is now at 5.0's old location) I've uploaded my copy and linked to it.

The latest version of Opera uses the same version of Adobe flash player as Chrome and now cannot be installed prior to user account generation.

As EMET v5.0 is a bit iffy on XP x64 (and 5.1 is completely broken) I've reverted back to 4.1u1. I've also written a new .xml protection profile that fixes the bug listed below as well as adding a number of additional applications to the protected list and fixing compatibility issues in XP x64 (it's always EAF). EMET, while a great idea, seems to suffer the same lack of testing as general Windows Updates of late.

A quiet month, not even the usual IE cumulative update. In other Microsoft news they have decided to no longer give advance notification of the number and general types of patches to be released, almost channelling Apple's secretive nature.

Added some notes about the first run of Foxit reader and Vuze bittorrent client/server, most notably Vuze will not find Java if the user account does not have administrator rights on its first run, after the first run one can change the user account to limited without further problems.

MS15-010 / KB3013455

Microsoft released a hotfix this month about which they had this to say "you may notice some text quality degradation in certain scenarios", this is a euphemism. In a great many cases text is unreadable or at least likely to induce a headache, making one's system nigh on unusable, hence that hotfix is not included at this time.

Other changes

Support for VirtualBox's experimental Direct 3D guest additions has been added, to use it copy VBoxGuestAdditions.iso to the nLite root directory (where the Run1_XP-64.bat file is) instead of \AddOns\ and increase the number of automatic logins (at step 8) by one.

With D3D installed Skype is blocked due to it causing graphics corruption (I suspect Skype throws a wobbly when it probes for a webcam) and YouTube only works with Chrome and Opera but on the other hand it allows some games to work (Doom 3 for instance).

Purged a few obsolete versions of GDI+ from after April 2014, there are still some redundant versions of GDI+ from before April 2014 in there, but Windows update whines if they are removed.

This might be the last set of updates for Windows XP Professional x64 edition (or if you prefer, Server 2003 x64 Home), either way there will be a clean up and reworking of the topic.

The main change will be to make it so the install media can be split between an unchanging CD and a USB stick with all the latest applications, similarly to how it is done in my Windows 2000 guide.

Restructure Notes

• It is critically important to run UpdatePrep.bat
• The nLite integrated hotfixes have been renumbered
• Support for Ricktendo's .Net 4.0 installer has been added
• The files for applying SP2 from within a 32-bit enviroment are now included
• The folder and files layout has been changed
• The commands in nLite to launch the batch files have changed
• You can now split the intall media between a DVD and a USB flash drive
• Hence you can do a "final" updated DVD and just update the applications on the flash drive

It has now been over 8 years since I first posted a guide to creating a fully updated install media, first for Windows 2000, then for Windows XP Professional x64 edition and finally for installing Windows 98se in Oracle VirtualBox.

To think that if I'd happened across the patch to allow Civilization II to be played on Win XP x64, it's quite likely that none of this would have come to pass.

Still Windows XP Professional x64 edition (AKA Server 2003 Home) has servered me well for over ten years, beginning with the public beta in early 2005, so it's a fond farewell.

5eraph has created updated versions of the certificate lists, they are now used in place of the outdated Microsoft versions.

Unfortunately the last 2 versions of Ricktendo's .Net 4.0 installer don't play well with XP x64, so one will have to use the Microsoft version for now.

The problems I'd noted with using VirtualBox's experimental D3D drivers seem to have been resolved by application updates.
