That is currently the best possible solution for completely overcoming driver signing issues, other methods only try to hide this matter under the carpet but don't really understand how and why it happens let alone imagine how to "fix" things up. The only drawback is the fact that this tool was designed to work under Windows PE environments in projects like LiveXP (read-only XP from CD) and when you install XP to disk you're using the default settings from XP setup. I personally recommend posting a request on the above link you've mentioned so that Peter (PSC) can introduce support for "normal" windows XP if possible or teach you what needs to be done to get it working right.

Try building your LiveXP using the windows 2003 trial and enable the BootSDI script (on the last folder of the list) to enable RAM boot and enable starting from USB. Also, are you using the latest version? Look here: http://winbuilder.net/download.php?view.8

Nice one. I'm not a fan of Vmware and prefer Virtual Box for my emulation needs but this is a very cold shower on the MS machine.. No excuse to avoid ESX now.

We're not certainly talking about qemu then.. How much memory have used to run your virtual machine? Trying to use 512Mb of emulated RAM on a machine with 128Mb will certainly cause any emulator to run sluggish because it will be using memory paged file. --- Qemu is a very efficient command line driven app, what was the configuration that you used? Just interested to know why you say that it barely run on your machine.

If you have physical access to the machine you can create a bootable USB pendrive with Petter Nordahl's software to promote the guest account to the admin group temporarily. http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ This method works the same for NT5 and NT6 but inside the running machine with guest permissions without physical access or an account with admin permissions to the box it's very difficult to overcome all the present security restrictions as fizban2 mentioned.

Qemu is the most self-contained PC emulator that I've ever meet. It's small sized (~3Mb), requires no install and should work from plain MS DOS, Win9x, WinNT, linux, etc to emulate Windows XP as you required on this question. -- A bit sluggier when compared to other emulators like Virtual Box, Virtual PC and VMWare but should still allow to work minimally with the emulated windows and I think it should be the most appropriate option for running XP. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_virtual_machines It doesn't however support Vista emulation yet and can also be speed up when installing the accelerator kqemu but I'm not sure if the service can be installed inside a non-NT windows. You can change the default background looking for the image files on the system32 folder of your boot disk. On the liveXP project the boot disk has a script that will pick the same background of your current work desktop. http://winbuilder.net/download.php?view.8 Hope you like it.

I've built a small nlite addons converter to WPI format. Pick your favourite nlite addons and batch convert them since WPI works well for both XP and Vista. You can use it to silently install programs on the post install Vista portion. http://www.msfn.org/board/tool-addons2wpi-...er-t113992.html

Try the nativeEx project from winbuilder. Creates an Windows XP PE based boot disk with Explorer shell around 30~50Mb depending on compression you select. LiveXP (also on the download center) at the minimal size profile also builds a 50Mb sized ISO with explorer running well.

There is a project that will create a Windows PE 2.x boot disk along with Explorer shell. The whole process is completely automated and uses Vista DVD as source to get all required files. Apps are included using app scripts posted by members that you download inside the program like Ubuntu's synaptic manager and this has been developed for nearly two years at the same time as Vista was also released and has nothing to do with BartPE nor 24 hours limitations. One correction if I'm allowed: WinBuilder is not a XP based PE builder like the other mentioned projects It's an engine meant to run scriptable projects for any sort of results based on windows - let it be XP / Vista, etc. Look on wikipedia to read more about available projects: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinBuilder Most noticeable ones at the moment are VistaPE and LiveXP. So, WinBuilder is an engine which boot disk projects can use for creating their intended results, almost the same as calling autoIt to GImageX simply because it was written in autoIt while there is a big difference as you may agree. I use Ubuntu and it's a straightforward OS that replaced windows XP/Vista on my work machines. Now I only run XP as an emulated OS whenever needed and it runs perfectly this way. http://nunobrito1981.blogspot.com/2008/06/...-to-ubuntu.html

It's possible indeed. But I recommend building a VistaPE rather than plain WinPE 2.x with the tools that come from MS. This value came as default from MS after XP SP1. Imdisk is a really outstanding tool in terms of simplicity and power. I was also MS ramdisk user until I tested it for the first time - no more 500Mb limitations, nice options to write directly to images on disk, can be started early on the boot process, disks can be dynamically resized or allow loading multiple images at the same time and all configuration comes with a control panel applet or straight from command line if you wish. Do try it at least once to see what I mean and you'll see why it is far better than the MS tool and shouldn't be ignored.

ninja pendisk! Ninja is the freeware zero-configuration program designed for guarding computers against viruses transmitted by USB pendisks. This ninja awaits quietly in the system tray for the times whenever a USB pendisk is inserted on the computer which will be examined to uncover the commonly malicious or virulent files known as "autorun.inf" and "ctfmon.exe" amongst many others. Have you checked your IE options to see if any security option disabled the option for a codified page to be saved on disk or perhaps a security policy is locking this access? Was your XP source modified? If so, please try again with a non-modified to source to compare results.

Asiekierka is now working on a wb project to automatically build a minimal windows 95 (4Mb). Good for building a mini OS quickly based on the original win9x files and progressively use open source DLL's. My all time favourite DOS UI is McShell which was created a long time ago. It beats the competition to dust but unfortunately is not (yet) open source as it contains some licensed resources (even thought the companies that licensed some of these resources have long disappeared). The author might be willing to release as open source if enough interest is raised. When I spoke with him about his trial version, he offered for free the full unrestricted version.
