  1. This practice pre-dates the Patriot Act. At least one ISP as far back as 2000 kept about 3 months of emails backed up in the Mail Exchangers, and approximately 7-8 months on tape backup. OK, I looked it up, and my ISP says that they keep e-mails for 90 days and then they are gone, incapable of being retrieved. Retrieved by them FOR you, yes. Retrievable by them? Well let's put it this way, if you had become under the watch of the Abuse Department for some illegal reason, trust me they would have access to those emails.
  2. That's interesting... I don't remember a Neptune. But it seems like Neptune has bad luck when it comes to products. Sega's Neptune never came out either.
  3. So far I think the biggest problem with the new UI is that it does not come with instructions. Unlike modern video games, there is no "tutorial level" showing you how to do things. I recall back to my first time with the Release Preview, I did not know how to reboot or close a (then Metro) modern application. I had found out how to restart by accident! I like to think I'm fairly good with computers enough to figure out interfaces and now I pretty much know how to get around. BUT the problem for my experience is that I immediately go to the Desktop and move about the OS manually! Also that "bug vs feature" question, I read it on the Register yesterday.... That is the BEST (maybe WORST) question ever! I wanted to add this complaint about Task Manager, where now it doesn't show you the file name for processes. Instead, it reads information out of the EXE itself. This is helpful, but not when software companies take shortcuts! The first one is a Battery Optimization software, the second is Wireless switch software. Both of these programs are the new Windows 8 version for the notebook I am working on. Both are 32bit apps that are running on a 64bit OS.
  4. Language like this will not be tolerated. Don't do it again.

  6. This XML file you posted puts the system into Audit Mode. You should be doing a domain join in OOBE instead. Also I see you are adding the Administrator account, this account already exists.
  7. Look in here: HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT: C:\Windows\system32\config\default My idea is if you make the change in the Default, it should apply to all users. Otherwise, it looks like the regular HKEY_USERS is stored in NTUSER.DAT. I did a quite look and I'm not sure where that file is, then again I'm not even sure how to use it either.
  8. Try your install without using the <servicing> object you have at the top. There seems to be some issues with how those are setup anyways. For example, you have "FreeCell" but the help says "InboxGames\FreeCell" instead. Is every install to be disabling these packages? Did you try using DISM to disable these features in the install.wim? WSIM validating is not a 100% check on everything, because it has rules for the objects, and checks the XML syntax but it doesn't actually compare it against a live setup. So there are still ways to have a valid (as per WSIM) xml and still generate an error, such as you have seen here.
  9. I think people who go into Windows 8 thinking of the classic desktop experience are the ones who are going to have the most problems, because it is radically different. It is even radically different from the Apple PC experience, which also uses a desktop style UI. Those coming from a smart-phone perspective will be able to go about it easier since it is not that much of a transition.
  10. Guees WHY exactly the good Apple guys came out with the "mini" iPad? Could it be for people that think a cellphone is too small but a tablet/netbook too big? jaclaz Yes it may have something to do with Amazon's Kindle products which are pretty small from what I see in commercials. These new tablets are just right-sized (even the mini iPad or Kindle sizes included) as compared to the old tablets. A netbook was a cool thing and I got one, but it is still cumbersome because it still is just a notebook.
  11. You should avoid downloading a torrent of Windows 8 because IT IS ILLEGAL.
  12. I don't know what that was about... but the entire thread I linked to may not be relevant, but that post seems to be. From what I understand, you have a folder with all the .MSU files in it (no subfolders), then you put that .cmd in that folder too. Since the .cmd and the .msu files are in the same location, you wouldn't need to set a path.
  13. Now there is some interesting idea. Basically take the Start Screen be like the Active Desktop of old? Why didn't MS think of this?
  14. I had already tested the "change to zero and then change back to ten" thing but it just hides those items. Would be too simple! Anyways, I think mostly everything in Local Security Policy is actually stored in the registry, but that it is easier to set it using the snap-in. HKEY_USERS should be able to be put in the WIM file but it isn't exact since Windows changes how the registry is used in online vs offline modes. There are two ideas I have just now: 1. Boot into a PE and look at the offline registry hives for these settings. Export those reg files and test import them into a mounted registry from the WiM and test. 2. This reg file you exported from the running OS, add FirstLogonCommands to merge the .reg file during OOBE.
  15. For example, here is a post where a user is using a batch file to run an .exe: Also, to make things easier for me (although I suspect there is a thread in here for that too, but you can't search for "msu" within the forum) is here is a sample batch file to execute a folder full of .msu files:
  16. Here is a review of the Surface with Windows RT installed. http://www.wired.com/reviews/2012/10/microsoft-surface/ I'm not sure what the end result is... This isn't the kind of review that tells you "YES GO BUY IT" or "NO DON'T BUY IT" at the end. It has some pros and cons at the end, but the ones in the text of the article seem more important. I am hopeful for the Surface, presuming I can get one some day as I finally (after years of being around Tablets) found a way I could integrate one in my life and my hobbies or whatever. There are just times I wish I had a computer when there is no computer around and the cell phone just won't cut it. For example, I do not particularly like using a web browser on the phone. I'm wondering what the impact of the Surface not having a 3G/LTE option will have on it. Maybe I don't really know how that is supposed to be used. I am under the impression that using that type of connection requires the device to be added to a mobile phone plan... as in, it isn't FREE...
  17. Wow what are you doing to your computers! Anyways, no picture is in your post. For EXEs you can use Start /Wait in a .cmd file. MSU can be installed via CMD as well.
  18. I can't wait to wear my new Windows 8 t-shirt out in public.

it says "plays well with others" on the front and has the Windows 8 logo on the back.

Expect a rain of *beep* falling down on you :P

  19. I ran into that information as well, but that pretty much disables the Recent Programs in the Start Menu altogether. I saw the question in this thread on being about how to clear those "default" but not disable the feature.
  20. It might be related to how the game is designed for a 486 and you have a Pentium 3.
  21. Well the first thing is that those computers need to get up to either Pro or Enterprise levels. Its always a headscratcher when you see companies taking shortcuts or making uninformed decisions when it comes to IT. If this company is in the United States, then you are bound by HIPAA regulations regarding the data. I wouldn't be taking any shortcuts. Regarding your question in general, you can assign the local accounts (of the physical computers) permissions on the server share. Basically, go into your share properties and add a user. Type in COMPUTERNAME\USERNAME where the computer name is the actual name of the client PC, and the user name is the local account on that client PC. I would definately recommend actually using Active Directory there but those client computers are a problem.
  22. It ticks me off, too, for Tihiy's sake. Nah, they're helping him out. He will just make it stronger and stronger. The only version that matters is final and they won't hack that. They only hack beta to preserve it. Sez Who? Sez me. BETA archive. They do not store nor have interest in production code. Just to be clear, you are an advocate of hacking software without the author or owner's consent? What difference does it make if it is beta or not? This isn't open source and not free for all. It is a closed beta and was declared as such.
  23. So from what I understand, the only way you can get it to work is if you disable MIDI? What is your soundcard model? Might as well post your complete specs since you're talking about an old computer and there is no way I can reasonably expect that you are still at the original specs for the Optiplex GX150. For reference, here are the game's requirements: http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/sonic-knuckles-collection/techinfo I don't personally have this game, so I can't test it.
  24. Look in Local Security Policy for this: My test PC has Home Premium on it right now so I can't test it myself.
  25. I had no luck getting a Radeon X1650 to work with Windows 98FE myself, so I ended up using an older (256MB) card. Its disappointing especially since I've got a perfectly good video card sitting in a box with no PC to use it in. From what I had found at the time, that card (at least) seemed to have better results in 98SE (based on what other people had posted online) but FE seems to be out of luck.
