Packages and drivers - this one comes from unix heritage. Hopefully it never imitates windows-style, because installing being too easy makes for trouble (considering that *nix is mostly used on servers). As for "slower than Windows" - in fact its much faster. But if you run too many services at startup and then use it in a Graphical mode, that's when its slow. In its original usage as servers, its fine - but for home users to use it, it would need a lot more graphical candy - which would be sad. Regarding "optimized distros", that's a good idea. They never do it though, because they want it to be usable on as many hardware platforms as possible so they leave it generic. About "fonts", you're right - the newer versions have good-looking fonts already.

Is There A Direct Link To 98se Ie Sp1 Download?

I still standby my earlier statement that Opera has almost no security problems. It has very few of them (a micro percentage of the proportions IE/moz get), and even then you suffer nothing at all. It has none of the really threatening flaws/problems found in other browsers, and where it does have a problem, you are still fine even if you don't update it because the problem is not going to negatively affect anything.Opera has an auto-check for updates facility, and this is only for the sake of giving you more features with new updates. NEVER do you find opera compromise your security, and never does it leave your OS exposed. But still it is so beautiful that you don't suffer lack of features just because of giving priority to security. At the most, some sites (hardly 1%) are incompatible with opera because they were designed specifically for IE - I always avoid such sites that don't have respect for standards. -

You have to check if the burnable image that you downloaded was corrupted in any way, or if it had a boot-sector at all. Open the image in UltraISO to check. If its boot sector is fine, then amybe nero burned it too fast - burn at 16x or lower and see again. If nothing else, just mount the images in VMware and see if it boots fine.

What mainboard and chipset does this presario use? Find that and then just get the drivers from the chipset maker's site.

Shutting off the monitor - power options (this is already in regtweaks, export the identical key on your machine after setting it to how you want).Disabling screensaver - this can be done from the *.theme file that you might use for setting the theme of your choice (from [shell] block). Removing the favourites totally, is a much-discussed topic and needs more than just registry tweaks. So it'd be a good idea to search for the thread that DOES have info about this. Both these things you describe are different from one another. The main problem seems to be about explorer not refreshing the screen regularly enough - this can be fixed from a registry tweak, and is present in the download available from the first post in this topic. Recycle bin does not at all matter actually..... this problem is not related to it, its just a general bug.

If anyone would like to know, my post above has been completed/updated. Interesting that this kind of a topic came up here where MS is the darling.... But whoever reads this knows well enough that I'm not an anti-Windows camper. Similarly, nor can I be expected to be anti-linux.

Thanks for the update, gabriel_buc!

Now I'd like to give this rant a chase for its money. Why is Redhat's enterprise editions not free? Because of the support and extra testing that goes with it. Why do they call Fedora "non mission-critical" ? Simply because it has received only peer review and not the resources or support of the company. So what's wrong with either of this? Its perfectly fine that 90% of people go and use the free version - all that they lose out on, is that they won't get priority support. Which is fine with the community because the average linux user's IQ is orders of magnitude better than the windows wimp. You want an OS legitimately and fully free, and you get it, full stop. Ever thought what kind of support an unlicensed windows user has access to? third-party support, you say? Well, its the same here as well - except that we know to fix our linux problems ourselves. And its also perfectly logical that a company exists to do business - they make one set of products "seem" better than the free ones. This is because of the assurances and support that comes with it. For example, in multi-user environments like ours, we need "justifications" to push something new - we need guaranteed support if something goes wrong, and need someone's a** to sue if something goes REALLY wrong. Think of it as insurance - were you under greater risk of life before you opted for it, or after? Neither! Your life is free then and free now, but its just that you don't want people to fend for themselves, you want to pay something and guarantee their worry-free life-style. Now to the issue of "free". The open-source community has a sore throat replying to this charge millions of times. The fact is that free here is as in "free speech" and not "free beer". You could make an app on linux from scratch by yourself, and charge millions of dollars, and no one's gonna ask you why you did that. Similarly, you could make an app on the shoulder of GPL'ed tools, and still charge whatever you like, as long as the resulting app is also bound by the GPL. If linux is not making money at the moment, that's because there isn't yet a large percentage of population using it. If you want examples that open-source can make money, just take a look at how many millions of web hosts make money from Apache, PHP and MySQL - which are the best and still free. Now about fragmentation. The GPL by its very nature requires that modifications be contributed back to the trunk of development. So this is not a danger. But if by "fragmentation" you actually mean all the thousands of distributions that exist, then its perfectly fine - not a problem at all. It is frightening only to the windows wimp. Distros exist because each niche of users want a different set of features. Its just like how your unattended installs are basically the same at the core, but tailored according to the client's needs. Grandma's needs, the gaming freak's requirements, the engineering student's wants, and the fiddling power-user teenager's wishes - all of these are likely to be totally different. This is where distros come in. If this statement is wrong, explain why longhorn is going to have 16 different distros. About linux being free if you don't value your time. Sorry to say this, but this "waste of time" that some people complain about..... this phenomenon is only occurring to those who don't have a sound basic knowledge of computing. Those that know what they're doing, and have got training and a good unix foundation in their student days see no hassles at all. The lame typists who just learnt to use "MS-Word" and now pass-off for higher titles, need not feel welcome into the "free" world. Stick with "Planet Microsoft" which grabs for your wallet for every slightest activity you want to do, and understand that you lose your value on that planet if you refuse to pay-up, or if you aren't rich enough. About needing everyone to put their heads together and come up with ONE linux. A big no is what you'd hear. One justification is as reasoned above for multiple distros. There's no need for everyone to have their mind on the same thing, for that leads to stagnation and uniformity (sounds undemocratic?). Uniformity leads to deformity of the grouping as a whole. First, there's no NEED for money to be involved. Second, getting market-share never was a bother for us - we make our apps for our own sake. Third, the media has mistakenly projected linux in an anti-MS light, which is not true at all, because linux doesn't (and is not evil enough to) care what MS does. Another case for non-monolithic structuring is that being free has led to a lot of innovation and progress, which the commercial world immediately copied from the free world, without so much as a word of credit. We have a huge range to choose from, for any and every need. If its difficult for the new-comer, then so be it. We like the built-in filtering in this kind of a system, which ensures that only the truly best brains can be part of the community and reach the highest levels. But one problem that I do see in the community, is that ppl who have entered open-source apps usage some time ago, are now literally forcing others to do the same, at gun-point. As in firefox's militant evangelism, which is detestable. A few years ago, the preferred mode of evangelising open-source was to demonstrate what it can do, and let ppl "pull" it towards themselves - unlike the aggressive "push" tactics today. Hoping that whoever reads this knows that there's no malice or bitterness in this post - its just to set the record straight.

Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs >> Add or Remove Windows Components Scroll down the list and put a "check" beside "Fax Services" Now insert your XP disk for files to be copied. Now you can either use "Print" function in any app and use the fax feature from there, or you can configure and use it from: Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Communiucations >> Fax Works fine now?

What kind of a post is that? Explaining what exactly you want, is a good idea. Or does anyone like being banned for spam?

Just use a RAR SFX - set it to auto-extract to your hard-disk and auto-start the setup from there. This is because your graphics card driver was not found. Just integrate the driver (using OEMpnpDriversPath) and it will be fine.

Is There A Direct Link To 98se Ie Sp1 Download?
prathapml replied to Shamgar's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Niiice.... IE has a base requirement of Windows, then it wants a 50+ MB download, then it will use 200 MB on the HDD, then it wants upto 5 MB of updates every month, and constant fiddling with settings for security? Cool, so NOW I understand why I decided IE was not for me. @Shamgar Please do not take what I say as negative criticism, rather it is just a fact.... 1. IE is useless. As such, links to it is not quite a "contribution". 2. Windows is usable only in the post XP+SP2 versions - win98 REALLY has lasted its planned life. 3. If you use IE on Win9x, you are wasting your time. Everyone agrees on this. Having said that, let me also say that actually Win98 and WinME are not a bad OS at all. Most of those OSes' bothers get cleared by a firm move to firefox or opera. Personally, I think opera is the best choice. Throw out IE, don't use it, don't care about it, don't update it, delete all shortcuts to it..... and use an alternative browser for everything. Download 3.5 MB once, and get a mail client, chat, and browser. This browser has a good interface for beginners, has every possible feature you can think of for experts, has an infinitely customizable and extendable UI, can be voice-controlled, and more..... It has thousands of features and easy-usability facilities that keeps growing softly on you as you use more of it. And the best part is that even if you forget to update it for 4 years, you will still be safer than a stone - it literally has almost no security problems. If you need more reasons to use opera, I have posted hundreds on this topic all over this forum and in other places. @MDGx You've got a wonderful site man! So much info that I couldn't finish reading it all, even in 3 days! Its been hugely useful to me, and I've seen it being mentioned whenever/wherever there's any thing about tweaking windows. Keep it up -

FYI, Tarun just quoted the rules, that is all - so "policing" is not the word to describe it. Moreover, its not a bad idea to accept what senior members tell, since they know what's out of line..... No further discussion about this part of the moderation please. Okie, so now different driver orders are going to be tried? Good good.... I suggest re-formatting before each different driver version trial. That's because you might have files lying around whereas a clean environment is best. Just FYI, the latest nVidia drivers is v 71.84 and its working perfectly for me here. Do keep us posted on how it goes
