Making UA Copy Files To My Documents
prathapml replied to Marthax's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Hmm... so your main issue is solved then? As for the GIF, it has no relevance to the windows install at all. It is there for the documentation. Open the file "readme.htm" or "setupxp.htm", and you will see that gif file at the top of the page. -
apache and mysql command
prathapml replied to member11's topic in Server - Side Help (IIS, Apache, etc.)
1. Get it here - http://archive.apache.org/dist/httpd/binaries/win32/ MSI or EXE. 2. There is no way to "restart" it as such - you have to stop and then start it. net stop mysql net start mysql -

For those of you migrating..... just go to:C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Opera\Opera75\profileThat's where all your mails, notes, contacts, transfers, bookmarks, wand-logins, cookies, etc. - basically EVERYTHING is stored. Copy away that folder to somewhere. Then uninstall the old opera. Install opera 8.0 Then configure the base settings to how you want it. Then just exit opera, and go to the new profile folder: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Opera\Opera8\profileAnd now replace the empty new files, with the files from the previous one. For example, restore your wand from old opera to this new one - wand.dat Similarly, opera notes - notes.adr Bookmarks - opera6.adr Mails - mail So on with everything else too - settings, toolbars, menus, sessions, search, panels, cookies, Skins........ whatever. Basically, the point is that all your old things are in that folder. If you want to move, all you need to bother about, is that folder alone. That's one good thing, unlike IE which has its crap spread all over your C: partition. Hoping this helps those of you moving to the new version from an old one....

This is a huge revision that Opera users have been waiting for since a long time. The main home-page will get descriptions and changelogs later. But for now, we can get it here: Opera 8 (the above link is to the non-Java version, you can anyway install the Sun JVM separately if you want Java).

The personal info microsoft collects and hides
prathapml replied to smercer's topic in Networks and the Internet
Windows stores history and tracks your usage - fact (this is for customising only) Windows HIDES something - nonsensical myth (as I proved - ever heard of the command I told? ) Windows transmits something to microsoft without your knowledge - myth (as Zxian proved above) This is all you have said above. Have something more to add? And mod or not... that is not related to what many members here are trying to tell! The fact is there's a lot literature out there, that seeks to demonise any market leader, and most of it untrue. -
SP2 has nothing to do with your RAM. And 32-bit WinXP's mem architecture allows upto 4 GB of RAM to be accessed fine. So you need no tweak for that. And yes, if you "think" there's something wrong with your hardware settings that dis-allows your 2 GB to be "managed", please post it in a new topic. The (transition) effects has been discussed a lot. Please read through this topic - its too big a subject to explain briefly. As for Indexing: ;Disable Indexing Service [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CiSvc] "Start"=dword:00000004

using the explorer interface alt+space - windowing options ctrl+left/right - scroll the left-pane left/right without mouse selection (focus needs to be provided with tabbing to it, though) ctrl+up/down - scroll the left-panel up/down as in above alt+up/down - browse to forward or previous location F2 - rename file/folder F3 - bring up search pane F5 - refresh F6 - go to address bar

The personal info microsoft collects and hides
prathapml replied to smercer's topic in Networks and the Internet
Ever heard of the command:DIR /A ? And index.dat contains personal info for yor own sake.... you can clear it from IE's options interface. -
ah, I see.... Anyways, accessing the Internet from copy within VMware should work now.
-
Uh, that's an important thing.... Why did I not see that before Do you mean to say this? 1. You have WinXPSP2 running as your main OS on your REAL hardware. 2. VMware is installed on this windows. 3. Linux is installed as a GUEST OS inside VMware. If that is the case, then don't worry about your actual AOL connection or peng, as Virtual Machines cannot see real hardware. By default, you would have a generic virtual Network Card in your VM. To access the internet if the above 3 points are true, you could do this: 1. VMware >> Edit Virtual Machine settings >> Ethernet >> change to NAT. 2. Connect to AOL on windows. 3. Now boot-up your linux within VMware and all Internet apps shud work. You mention Mandrake and then Fedora...... so now I dunno which you are using. But still, by default eth0 interface (i.e., your NIC) will be setup to be connected at startup, so if you haven't customised it, your linux shud be able to access the Internet fine. Do post back on how it goes

It has been 7 years since Win98 was released
prathapml replied to un4given1's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Not at all!I already said that when there's good to stay with win98, then knowledgeable users do use it.... As for empirical evidence. Now this one I'm sorry to say that all evidence points towards ntfs being a better FS (MS would not have went forward with it, if that was not so ). Now if you refer to security loop-holes in NTFS, then please consider that: 1. Any software WILL have unplanned-for circumstances where loopholes begin exhibiting themselves. 2. Seasoned NTFS users would ask "loopholes exist, so what". Because NTFS has atleast this much of security.... what does FAT have? 3rd-party solutions is not an answer, they have a million times more holes. Plus, why bother going to 3rd parties? Also, I believe I know what it takes to test performance, and I've found that on most modern machines, disc operation on NTFS allows the OS to fly faster, than FAT16/32. -

Thanks for your opinion jaclaz. I just had to clarify the purpose of my previous post - it was for those who just talk of linux without half-knowing anything about it. It has become something of a bluff to threaten that one would move from windows to linux if Microsoft did not heed to the person's desire. This hypocrisy had to be seen through. As far as myself is concerned, my past posts right on this board is proof enough that I am not biased against any particular OS, be it any distro of linux or versions of windows. @eidenk Nice post! But it only goes to prove what I said. Technically well-competent windows users moved on to newer versions (and use an older version only if there's compelling reasons). Excepting those already on the linux platform, most of those who stayed back with win98 probably don't even understand half of what you posted. BTW, good to see people that understand "free" as in choice, present here. Most windows converts are stopped in their tracks by the dependency-hell, or the tremendous choice available in the free-software world, since they are used to a monolithic base and unified ways to make things work. -
Office 2003 without Product Key Question
prathapml replied to duomenox's topic in Application Installs
MST and admin-install point for slip-streaming won't work on OEM version. So the following commands is what you'd need in your batch-files for automating it. setup.exe /QB PIDKEY=YOURSERIALHERE office2k3-sp1.exe /Q regedit /S clear-key.regthe first line installs office silently with the specified key, and second line installs SP1, and third line clears key. The clear-key.reg has to be made from notepad, copy/paste the below into it: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Registration]These steps should work fine ..... -
Yeah.I do agree that 64-bit may have a whole lot more power and so and so on.... But when I have powerful 32-bit machines and 64-bit does not out-perform my machines by much..... then 64-bit is useless as of now. Also, there's no "killer application" for x64 - there's nothing special that you can do on a 64-bit that you CAN'T do on a 32-bit. On the contrary, many good 32-bit apps won't even run on 64-bit architecture.

Office 2003 without Product Key Question
prathapml replied to duomenox's topic in Application Installs
You are free to use this proven method. Use the original CD (can be VLK or retail), or an admin-install point and install o2k3 normally with key. Then use a registry tweak, or REG.EXE (command-line) to delete this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\RegistrationThat is where all info about your o2k3 installation's registration is stored. If you delete that, your o2k3 apps will ask for a key at first-run (but the key you used to initially install office will already be filled-in for you). If you need more info, do not hesitate to ask! -
Whew, and so you both shook hands..... Now, about the topic - XPlode is what I have been using since ages now, and yes obviously that's because its good. Another good option is wihu.

Office 2000 Pro Unattended Install
prathapml replied to Paul_Stuffins's topic in Application Installs
Well, don't worry about the interface of the app. What you need to do, is to copy and paste that command into your unattended setup's batch-files, and THEN modify it. -

prathapml replied to un4given1's topic in Windows 9x/ME
yes, so what?It _will_ be slow for all normal operations. It makes its power apparent only when you run apps specifically written to take advantage of it. Okay, lets settle the issue of linux once for all in this thread, since so many of you seem to be saying go to linux rather than XP. 1. In what way EXACTLY is the 64-bit (linux) kernel optimised, that it can take better advantage of the hardware than XP ? Specialised apps? Well, those apps exist for windows x64 as well. 2. Next, lets take you up on your offer of moving to linux. Yeah, do it. Lets see how comfortable you are on it. 3. Are you REMOTELY aware of the distribution/compatibility mess that linux is? Something that you got working finally after 5 days of slogging on RedHat won't work on Debian, and so on...... Forget it, I won't bother telling all this, just see for yourself. In future, when telling that your upgrade path upwards from Win98 is linux rather than WinXP, see the 3 points stated above, and do your homework on it. -
